A very hard book to find these days, but will worth it for the ultimate search. William Klein is the ultimate hipster in photography - he did fashion and a series of films that are great. He knew everyone from Ali to Serge Gainsbourg.

This particular volume serves as a greatest hits of sorts - and it is a catalogue from the Centre Pompidou where he had his retrospective sometime last year. Nevertheless what makes Klein's books (not only this one) so special is that he designs them himself. So when you buy one of his books, it is almost like a piece of art from the artist himself.

I have sort of a low-rent collection of his books - and I actaully bought one at a flea shop for $5! That was the find of the century - at least for me.

Besides the design work (which I have been obsessing lately regarding books) he took masterful photos that are fully of kinetic energy. Most of his work is sort of organized around cities. New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Rome. I believe he is an American who has lived in France for years now.

Also Klein reminds me of Jean-Luc Godard. I am not sure why? But maybe the way he sees fashion and culture has more to do with Godard's aesthetic than anything else. He is also very pro-active political - especially in the 60's. He was (or is) fascinated with the Black Panthers, etc.

Nevertheless try to locate this book. It's a beauty with really strong images.
