Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.Let Jay Blades' words of wisdom – gleaned from his own triumphs over adversity – help you to find your best path through life. Filled with characteristic warmth and humour, Jay talks about the life lessons that have helped him to find positivity and growth, no matter what he’s found himself facing.Jay shares not only his adventures and escapades but also the way they have shaped his outlook and helped him to live life to the fullest. His insight and advice give you everything you need to be able to reframe your own circumstances and make the best of them. It’s very easy to be passive in life and just do what you know. But, believe me, you’ll be a lot more excited every day if you shape your own future.
I loved this book. It is full of great tips for living your best life. Jay's story is heart-wrenching too. I only picked his books up because a friend was interviewed by him for a TV show and said what a lovely person he was.
Jay's personality comes across in this book, and it felt like he was talking to me. I would recommend it to anyone but I do have one observation:
Jay's headline for chapter 8, Reaching Out, is; "Use your influence to change those who are not like you. That's how we make real change. "
I would rephrase it. "Use your influence to help others make the changes they need to live their authentic lives."
Jay mentions the world in which we live. One in which we are expected to conform, act a certain way, and fear change. Consequently, many of us have different persona's. We don't need them. We need to be our unique selves.
We are all connected, and our influence can help or hinder others. The key, for me, is being your authentic self. By doing so, you will help others make the changes that are right for them.
Jay Blades I think has probably had quite an interesting life, and of course this book isn’t really about that you can get a feel for some of things he’s been through whilst reading it. Unfortunately I didn’t really enjoy this book very much, for me it feels very entry level so-called “wisdom”, as delivered to you by a children’s tv presenter. This book presents Blades as overwhelmingly positive, and whilst that’s not necessarily a bad thing to be, it’s such an onslaught in this book against every topic he brings up, that it begins to feel either toxically positive or fake. Overthinking? Just stop thinking so much! Target of racism? Just don’t think about it! After a while it feels like the underlying life lesson for everything in Blades’ life is to bury your head in the sand.
I have watched Jay on The Repair Shop for a few years now but I didn't know much about him or his background. So when I saw Life Lessons on Borrowbox, I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn more about him.
I listened to this short audiobook in one sitting. I definitely did laugh out loud listening to it once the train once or twice. I felt I learned a lot about Jay's background, family life, hobbies and interests.
The Life Lessons included in the book are interesting and can be quite useful. I would've preferred Jay to narrate it himself but it was easy to listen to the narrator.
As this is a nonfiction book I will not be giving it a star rating. I borrowed the audiobook from Borrowbox.
Jay clearly has a lot of life experiences behind him and he has done well to create the life he has from the start he had.
He has endeavoured to capture his learnings from his life in some useful paraphrases in each chapter. Some I found more relevant and meaningful than others but that said I did write them all down in an attempt to relate Jay's learnings to my own !
What a read. I never knew just how hard Jay Blades had at times in his life, but came out bigger & stronger. Life lesson quotes that I've kept note of, as they couldn't be more or true & so inspirational.
Although the ideas covered aren't anything revolutionary what they lack in novel-ness they make up for in their simplicity. It's clear Jay is talking to the "common person" here and helps to set a foundation of good life principles to live your life on. Albeit not the most life changing I think there's value nonetheless in getting back to first principles sometimes with the lessons he mentions.
