When a scientist at the world’s top AI company is murdered, a covert CIA operative must recruit a former love interest to help uncover the killer.
Nations and corporations alike are racing to dominate the world’s artificial intelligence industry...by whatever means necessary.
With its genius CEO and breakthrough technology, the Silicon Valley-based Pax AI Corporation is one of the hottest companies in the sector. But when one of Pax AI’s top scientists is murdered at a prestigious tech conference, company executives and foreign spies are all on the suspect list.
In the aftermath of the killing, CIA officer Colt McShane has been assigned to a joint counterintelligence unit based in San Francisco. The unit’s leadership believes that an international espionage ring has been stealing classified technology from Pax AI.
Now they want Colt to use his past relationship with Pax AI executive Ava Klein to penetrate the company’s inner circle, and uncover the mole. But as Colt learns more about Pax AI’s classified programs, he discovers just how powerful - and dangerous - their new technology can be. As the struggle for AI dominance grows ever more competitive, the factions vying for power are becoming desperate to achieve victory.
In the fight for absolute power, there can be only one winner. Everyone involved has their own spies and secrets.
Whose spy will win? And what secrets will they reveal?
Andrew Watts graduated from the US Naval Academy in 2003 and served as a naval officer and helicopter pilot until 2013. During that time, he flew counter-narcotic missions in the Eastern Pacific and counter-piracy missions off the Horn of Africa. He was a flight instructor in Pensacola, FL, and helped to run ship and flight operations while embarked on a nuclear aircraft carrier deployed in the Middle East.
Wow, what an interesting and fascinating book. This is the first book in a new series about the CIA officer Colt McShane. The book is part technothriller part spy novel and the story is about the race to dominate the world's AI industry. The Americans, the Chinese, the Russians and the Israelis are all involved in the power play and in the middle of all this is our protagonist Colt McShane. It's a fast-paced, chilling and thrilling story that kept me on edge until the very last page. I hope there will be more books in this series and I really recommend this book.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Severn River Publisher for the opportunity to read this book and share my honest opinion.
I read and enjoyed Andrew Watts’ War Planner techno-thriller series. Andrew has surpassed his earlier success with Firewall – a complex, riveting techno-thriller revolving around the global race to develop and control AI technology. The story is well developed and fast-paced, with fascinating characters and unexpected plot twists. I highly recommend reading Firewall and look forward to many more books in this series from Andrew Watts.

I cannot get enough of this supposed AI of the future + espionage; it’s just fun…This story is very well written, with bits of humor and great descriptions of the locales and players. If you’re not sure whom to trust, what your chances are that anyone is telling the truth while adding the stress of whether you will even be alive at the end of the mission, it’s nice to be in such a beautiful place. If like me you’re a skeptic who has participated in endeavors where it was not always clear whom should have access to professional information, this is the book for you! Michael Wolff did a very good job with the different voices and accented languages. This is my first story by Andrew Watts and I will be looking for more of his work- as soon as I get back to the dreaded TBR stack, two of which are coming due…which equals…No end of year break 😎
I rate this way: ( audio books )
Narrator : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Story : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Overall : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+
Listened on Audible. Liked the characters, twists kept up until the last paragraph of the book, and fascinated by the info on AI provided to move the plot along. Very entertaining to me. Reader was okay to listen to but not my favorite.
A great start to this new series! This techno thriller grabs you from the first page and doesn’t give you a moments rest until the last page. His characters are wonderfully developed and the taut story line makes this a book that is hard to put down. The ethical and moral arguments on Artificial Intelligence are compelling and leave you with a lot to think about.
Thank you to the author who provided me with a copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Firewall (The Firewall Spies Book 1), my seventh read from author Andrew Watts. An incredibly well-developed, well-written book that takes off like a jet fighter from an aircraft carrier. The primary characters are well developed. Reminiscent of the best works of Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum. A captivating, page-turning, well-written read. A must-read book! “I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author and the sequel to this book Agent of Influence (The Firewall Spies Book 2). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
This latest book by Andrew Watt is a definite page-turner that combines AI with an action-packed storyline that feels unrelenting. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that there is enough intrigue and misdirection in this story to give you whiplash. I’m not certain I can remember when I have enjoyed a techno-thriller with such a well-developed group of characters as much as Firewall. I can’t wait to read the next episode in this series. I received an Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.
My first time reading Andrew Watts and this guy knows how to set up a good story. What you have here is an espionage/techno thriller dealing with AI and some very disturbing predictions for the future as the technology grows more powerful. I enjoy this kind of subject matter, so it really sucked me in.
Although it's marketed as an espionage thriller, if you're looking for Bond style gunfights and chase scenes, you'll be disappointed. It's a very slow moving book as the various intelligence agencies jockey for possession of the technology with double crosses left and right and lots of political maneuvering. Loved the technology descriptions, but this is a book I never really felt the need to rush back and pick up where I left off. It's missing that spark of a great story where I absolutely have to know what happens next.
The ending was a little lackluster, but the first one in a series usually is. Based on the quality of the writing here, I'll be looking at some of the author's other offerings. If you're good with a slow burn techno story, this is a good choice.
I received this book as a pre-release copy. Watts first books I read were the real threat of China rising series called War Planners. He maintained the level of quality of plot/tech with Firewall. I enjoyed the book and had a hard time stopping reading it when I had other life demands. Information security, AI tech, Spies, Intrigue and a little international drama made for a solid read.
Silicon Valley's tech sector is about to be stood on its figurative ear as Pax AI Corp unveils its startling innovation in the Artificial Intelligence arena. Calling it a game-changer is a rank understatement. The discovery of fire, the invention of the wheel and the development of life-saving vaccines all rolled into one will be dwarfed by Pax's technological creation of an intuitive artificial intelligence that can express your thoughts before you can verbalize them. The developer of this technology can dominate more than just the markets. They will have the power to dominate the world.
CIA officer Colt McShane is assigned to the San Francisco field office to infiltrate the Pax organization and ferret out the person who killed one of their top scientists and is stealing classified technology. To help in his quest, Colt is instructed to enlist the help of his old flame, Ava Klein, who is now an executive with Pax AI. The problem is, they didn't part on good terms and she may not even speak to him. Worse yet, Colt is still in love with her. So how's that gonna' work, huh?
"Firewall" is the first book in Andrew Watts' The Firewall Spies series. The description of it as a "techno thriller" intrigued me because; A) thrillers, especially espionage, are second on my list of favorite genre and B) I'm a closet techno nerd. Perfect, right? Not so much. It was mostly a snooze until well past the halfway mark when the pace picked up and things got interesting. The plot premise is a plausible look into the not-too-distant-future but the storyline gets bogged down in the minutae of site and personnel security. Yes, the information is critical to the overall plot but its presentation is excruciatingly drawn out. The protagonist, Colt McShane, is an interesting character because he's likable and unpredictable. Author Watts uses flashbacks for character development which mostly works but also contributes to the drag. For me, the jury is still out as to whether or not I decide to try Book Two in the series. Four stars.
As a spy thriller, the book works in the traditional way Unfortunately the author is stucked in the technology world of decades ago. The author also betrays his lack of familiarity with finance and investment. If you hope to learn something about AI, you will be disappointed or mislead. For example, no calculus is required to do AI. The only thing he got right is the discussion on the possible AI impact on unemployment Investors in high techcompanies are concerned with the high growth and potential future appplicatons. Financial details will be left to auditors as it is impossible o predict future ncomes. So Colt's cover is implausible. What he gets wrong about the A Itechnology is that he is following the old secret formular mcGuffin model. But AI is in the basic research stage. Even at the start of the atomic age, none of the basic physics were secret. Similarly much of cutting edge AI has been published and open sourced. Not that there are no more trade secrets. But much of that is in some person's head and experiences. The race in AI is for talents, not a secret formular. While a weather prediction algo would be valuable. It is fundamentally impossible however powerful AI becomes. That is because weather is chaotic and impractical to predict mathematically. The only reason AI company would have an area requiring secret clearance to enter would be because they are housing some classified data set. This review is based on 50 years of experience using AI.The most pernicious part of the book is where the author assumes Chinese students would all uncritically pass info to China intellgence services. We would do well to remember the Ccase OF Qian Xuesen (https://www.bbc.com/news/stories-5469...) hounded BY McCarthyism of his days, He had wanted to stay and work in US after his Caltech degree. Instead unsupported suspicions drove him to go back to China to start their rocket programs. A clear case of paranoia worsening US competitive position.
Very fast paced, action-packed, hanging on the edge of your seat…kind of drama!
So let me preface this by saying that I requested a book from NetGalley, and then realized it was book #4 in the series! So, I took out #1 from the library, and this is it!
To give a brief outline: Colt McShane is a CIA operative. He’s been brought into an AI case as it’s gaining traction. As he infiltrates into all the action, one of the main players is murdered…right in front of his eyes! This brings even MORE attention to what is going on with this AI company…
As he delves into all of this, he realizes that his ex-girlfriend is also invested in the AI team. You know, the one that got away…. There’s a lot of history there, and chemistry too!
As the pieces of the puzzle start to click into place (in one aspect), they also start crumbling apart in other aspects! And the so called ‘timer’ is ticking…
4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!

Its perfect timing for this book, all that is going on today in the world lends a level of reality to the story. I am a big fan of the war planners and this book is right up there. There is a level of detail and fanese about the writing, that gives this book an even higher level of reality. The story line has all you would want, good character development and twist and turns around every corner that keeps you locked in. But for me the main character is a bit weak or maybe its lacking in what I would expect from an operator for the CIA deep cover. I'm not saying that it is right of wrong just different from other lead characters in this type of book, I'm not sure if that makes it closer to what is real or just what I have come to expect. It just seams that I feel a little less sure of the true men and woman that do this kind of work, it seemed colt was more lucky than talented or insightful. It could also be an example of what a team around you contributes maybe your not the sole savior and reality truly is a team effort. Again the way the story flowed was what really kept me it was nice that the writing is what kept me not the strength of the lead character. I think it lent itself to a more well rounded book. It is very much worth the read.
I enjoyed the book for about 2/3 then it became a bit sloppy and rushed. Characters were popping in and out and some of the decisions the regulars made didn’t make sense. Colt the main character had fewer core details than Ava who was more interesting than all of em.
I enjoyed the authors writing style. I thought it was funny how he omitted curse words though. Interesting that you can learn much about authors by what they include and don’t. I appreciate the shortening of the sex scenes because I hardly ever think those are needed.
I was considering the second book until the last 1/3. The book went from an organized slow burn with smart action to a rush to put the pieces together. It didn’t have you, had the readers where you wanted em. I won’t be checking out the second book of the series. Really disappointed because the author really had something that slipped away.
Thanks to receiving advance copy of the book to read on my Kindle. Even though the book has come out, I have finally managed to get some time to sit down and read this book. I was first intrigued in reading this book as it touches on a subject matter which we will working with in the not so distance future which is Artificial Intelligence and how it will affect as individuals with this technology.
The book was very informative with regards to the technology and how it is to be used within the fiction world. In learning about the technology, I can see it being used by companies and governments alike. I enjoyed the plot and how it progressed in the book where it had twists and turns but didn't know how it would end up.
I really enjoyed the book and the subject matter as it is up my alley. I look forward to seeing what the other comes up with next,.
'Firewall Spies' by Andrew Watts is a new series that, in my opinion, got off to a great start. The first book in the series, 'Firewall,' was not what I expected. As an IT guy, the word firewall has significant meaning when it comes to computer security. In this book, it means a lot more. The author expertly developed the main characters in a way that slowly led me into an unexpected scenario. The author does this with a little romance, a career change, suspicious characters, espionage, and a chance to save the world! How can you not finish a book like this? There is an audible book performed by Michael Wolff, which is excellent. I recommend both of these if reading in the middle of a business meeting or driving is frowned upon where you live. Now, for the next book, Agent of Influence. -Mr.Bill
Twilight Zone would never make it today. Reality is too weird all by itself. Everyone is familiar with AI by now. We have smart watches, smart phones, Alexi, Siri, Google, etc. Technology doesn't stand still. Imagine an AI so advanced, it can write its own programs, predict peoples thoughts and make fake images undetectable from real ones. Such is the level of technology at PAX AI. These advancements are worth billions. In the wrong hands it can be deadly. CIA operative, Colt McShane is sent undercover to find out who is sophisticated enough to steal these programs. Pick your spy agency, China, Russia, Israel, they all have their hand in the pickle jar. Even the CIA and FBI are suspect. Who is Colt to trust.
This is a spy story with many unexpected twins as the plot develops. The main character is not a super hero, he does his job but not the dirty job. The mossad spy he has a relationship with, Ava, is much more important and interesting for the plot. There seems to be a technical glitch at the end when we learn that Jeff Kim has an AGI research lab underground below his house in Palo Alto. But it was previously explained in detail that the experiments required a quantum computer, a huge server farm, huge power supply and huge cooling system with back ups. Where is all that in his house? In summary, it's an interesting and entertaining plot . I'm jumping the second book. I want to hear more about Ava.
This was another book I picked up on Audible because it was available and I did not have any credits. Remarkably, this was quite a good story (the performance by the narrator leaves a lot to be desired). Given the topic that is all over the news right now, ChatGPT and AI, it is also an extremely timely story.
Finally, Andrew Watts alluded to a plot twist throughout the climax of the story. But at the very end he presented a very intriguing plot twist (really it was a cliffhanger).
To sum it all up, it appears I have yet another series that I'm involved in.
This book had a great start. Spies meeting to turn another spy but the meeting goes horribly wrong. Then a chapter explaining the backstory of the main characters. After that it fell apart. Too much description, too much explanation, nothing to move the story or build tension. Toward the end there is more action but it doesn't build the tension. This had the makings of a good book but it really needed to be tightened up.
Twists and turns but in the long run, everyone living in the next decade should read. AI is not just a buzzword, but is the future. Just take a look around you. Better get good at your job; else, a bot will fill the void. This is not fiction, it is happening. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series, as this is real. When it finally sets in, let’s hope the US is in control.
Picked this up because of the heavy technology (AI) base. The espionage was a fun angle. You never knew who to truly trust.
The author enjoyed poking fun at clichés. That is why it both surprised and disappointed me when the author ended the story with a cliché (and not intended as a joke. Rather a small snippet of uninspired writing.) Other than the close-out (- one star) this was a fun little read.
In Reading past Andrew watts book I became a fan of his style the many twists and turns. on each chapter, the depth of each character the plots the books take, and on the firewall the ending. That was a big surprise hopefully going forward this new series will continue be a great series like the past series
A girlfriend becomes a Mosad spy. A rising Navy officer leaves the USN and becomes a black ops operative. Super SI software draws several Nation 'Players' into battle. Allegiances are confused. Ava & Colt save the day with help from an Israeli spy. Non-stop action. Great character profiles. Don't miss this story.
A work of fiction? A lot of it is actually believable
Sometimes reading stories like this used to seem like sci fiction, but now it's like reading the headlines. Fast paced action and realistic happenings put you right in the middle where you , duck, reach for a weapon or jump out of your seat ready too run. I look forward to reading the next book.
I found this book to be thoroughly captivating. I could not put it down. I was also thrilled by the story and the action. I found it suspensful and exciting. I also found the story to be intellectually challenging and thought provoking. I would recommend this to anyone who likes science fiction thrillers along the lines of Douglas E. Richards!
Love it guys, what a cracking start. I have been holding off reading this book until the 2nd book was about to be released, as I think it is good to have a couple of books to go at, as you can see the characters develop. For me, it helps to give me an idea how the series will shape up, as the first book is still fresh in my mind. Binge reading is the way to go.
First, thank you to Mr Watts for his service to our country. His War Planners series brought me to this book. And it’s another solid effort, covering very scary and timely technology. But the story falters in the last quarter with too much spoken exposition and some plot points that stretch believability too far.
