Edit 2: Guys! I finally got the book (my very last Book Depository order--may your memory be strong), but I am currently dying inside because I have all of my finals this month and I do not have the time or my brain cells to read it. I guess it will have to wait for just a little bit more... :(

Edit: I just want to know what I have to do to get this ARC, no thing is too big.

I do not know what this day is but we have another cover and.....I am speechless. Who let Barron have such amazing covers on all of her books in this series?? I need this book right now. Rena Barron hear my pleas

Also, I need more Daho. He might be a mass murderer but that is still my husband (I am taking no criticism).

I’m so glad for this books ending but I found myself time and time again wondering why there were seemingly insignificant descriptions of certain events while larger, plot-making events were left unexplained. I felt as though the author had this story in her head so long she knew it inside and out and didn’t take into account that the readers would be wholly unknown to it. Overall I don’t regret finishing this series, I just wish that I wasn’t left so confused through most of it.

A finale with strong message about love, sacrifice, and forgiveness, MASTER OF SOULS sees the end of Arrah’s story as she tries to save her friends, family, and people from the wrath of her sister and the Demon King.

It was wonderful to reunite with so many characters in this final instalment. Poor Arrah ran herself ragged trying to help everyone, to do the right thing, making her an incredibly selfless hero. The side characters added to her journey, making her an excellent parallel to Eifya. Daho and Shezmu had many of my favourite scenes, their relationship and loyalties a complicated one.

There were plenty of plot lines to wrap up, but Barron did a great job of ensuring everything was tied together neatly and that the story was as exciting as it was emotional. MASTER OF SOULS pulls no punches by the end.

A fantastic YA fantasy series from an author that continues to impress, this series is not to be missed!

A great conclusion to the trilogy! Almost had me in the end there, but I was pleasantly suprised.

The Streak is Broken! -- July Wrap Up || 9 books!

Welp— this is awkward.

I can’t believe this series fell so flat in the end. I’d been really enjoying the first book and the second hit a bit of a slump but was still pretty entertaining. This one? I’ve had so many moments where I found issues in how things could possibly unfold with the very small planning the characters seem to do.

Then the characters themselves were starting to really bug me. Arrah is just making “plans” with no thoughts of how they’ll happen. Then she and Rudjek are trying to be a couple but actively working against each other at the same time? Which was very irritating since they’re best friends and clearly on the same side? So why are they not communicating with each other better? Efiya strangely feels like a child (which she is in terms of age) but is also conniving like an evil genius and throws around the idea of seducing Daho (so uncomfortable with that). Daho also feels like a moody teenager rather than an ancient being fighting against the beings who took his family, which made it difficult to take him seriously.

I just lost steam with this, unfortunately, so DNF at 33%.

i would like to preface everything i'm about to say (& it's a lot) with this: when i start a new book, series or not, the upper bound is around 60 pages, give or take, to get into it. some are a little longer (i can think of some where that number has been in the triple digits) and some where it's maybe 30 at the lowest. this series took an entire book and a half to properly get into.

i'll admit, once i got into it, it was GOOD. the clear standouts were the lore and the worldbuilding; even from a glance, you can see just how much thought had gone into creating such a complex basis for the foundation of the plot. and to be fair, once you see the plot from the much wider angle the second book presents you with, it's pretty hard to compare it to most plots i've read. a lack of uniqueness DEFINITELY is not a problem when it comes to the series overall.

another great thing - although not a constant truth - is the clarity in writing between characters. book one is spent entirely in arrah's point of view, so we get a fairly good idea of what her voice sounds like. then, when the second book rolls around and we get the multiple point of view thing (which changes again for the third book with the roster of characters' POVs we get to read from), most of the time, you don't need the indicator to know whose chapter it is. the voices all stand out in their own way - i found, particularly dimma and daho were the most obvious to discern.

that said, the writing is also the books' weak point. there were MANY moments where a solution was just suddenly found with little to no explanation of why or how and it just ended up feeling a little too convenient, and as such, a cheap plot resolution. i remember that being the case significantly with the first two books (particularly the second), and not as much with this one? not that convenient solutions WEREN'T present in master of souls, just that there were less of them because (presumably) the plot had been thought through a little more with most (but i guess not all) plot holes removed.

(also, not so much a writing issue but an editing issue, and also small but still me being picky enough to notice it: how come so many books have multiple editors and yet they STILL have typos? it's not a case of slagging off editors, cause a) it's not just this series that does this, and b) to be fair, you can tell they put the vast majority of the effort into making the story good... but still?)

going back to the convenience thing, i want to talk about the ending. i remember the first book having a pretty good ending, or at least good enough to entice me to buy the sequel. the second's ending didn't need to be good, given the amount of plot that got unveiled made me excited to figure out plot implications. book three? i'd literally reserved part v (the last 50 pages or so) for another night when i could give it my full time and attention to not only appreciate but review properly. i'm starting to think that was a bad move. the ending felt VERY rushed and just far too convenient that, of all times, it just HAD to be now for everyone to come to the conclusion that, yes, war IS bad and people shouldn't have to die. i get it, a series like this is naturally going to be difficult to write a good ending for, but still. a lot of things would've been better than what we got. i got to the ending and i just felt empty inside, like it all amounted to not actually that much? like what was the point of all of this if (minor spoiler) a nap fixes all the problems? i get that makes it more realistic but still???

also, questionable pacing for this last book. maybe that's linked to the convenience thing, but in retrospect, it felt WAY off in parts. then again, pacing is probably the easiest flaw to forgive based on the other problems present (like the very imbalanced power scaling or what felt like efiya's complete change in personality in book three... there are bigger fish to fry here.)

ALSO ALSO (& though this is a bit of a spoiler, i will fume about this for a long time), IF YOU'RE GOING TO KILL OFF CHARACTERS, BE DECISIVE ABOUT IT AND DON'T CHANGE YOUR MIND. i absolutely hate when an author kills off a character for mostly shock factor (or it's just an entirely unnecessary death beyond sparking a reaction from the reader) and then later decides to bring them back. no names revealed, cause again, saying this is a spoiler in itself, but this triggers me every single time. either keep the character alive or keep them dead. you can't revive a dead character just to get their happy ending. no one should have plot armour except any characters you have already clearly stated to be immortal or immune to harm from plot actions. as much as it was nice seeing the consequences of heka's actions at the end, my god, just stay dead, otherwise literally what is the point of death?

there's a couple other things i could grumble about (namely, heka following dimma's instructions TO THE EXACT LETTER but then bending the rules in the way that benefits pretty much only him so he's just being a selfish bastard, which is an awful look for maybe the most powerful being in the entire book, especially given he's LITERALLY the reason for the universe dying). likewise, there are things i could praise endlessly (this series' ability to take gods and god-like figures as well as human and humanoid characters and portray them just the same with some EXTREMELY human characteristics and make their faults and shortcomings extremely human and realistic). then again, as with every review, i do think a lot of what i want to say about it is just better explained if you read the series yourself.

overall? pretty good. top-shelf-quality debatable. it's... different, i would say. this series absolutely will stand out in my mind for a while, thanks to the presence of the pretty quote pen in the final book, the very large number of cool inspiration scenes i'd LOVE to steal for my own works, and the incredible and incredibly unique worldbuilding within this series. it's pretty hard to recommend this series, cause it took me AGES to get into (& that first book is certainly an acquired taste), but for someone who's willing to stick through it to find something new (and pretty cool, if i may say so), it's probably worth it. at the very least, it makes for great inspiration reading. i WILL be coming back when i need to write some cool lore. you can be sure of one thing: anti-magic will not keep me away for long.

Q: Rozczarowała was ostatnio jakaś książka?

Miała dużo wzlotów i jeszcze większych upadków.

Arrah has released the kas of the five chieftains to save Rudjek’s life, but even though the Demon King has retreated with his army, the danger isn’t over. The orishas want the kingdom and the tribes to unite against the demons, but if they do, the Demon King won’t spare Arrah’s people. Rudjek and Arrah find themselves of opposite sides of the issue, Rudjek wanting to fight, and Arrah wanting nothing but peace. While they argue, the Demon King releases Efiyah, Arrah’s half-sister, and while Daho is content to wait for Dimma to join him, Efiyah is greedy and wants revenge. When the half-demon girl manages to undermine Daho, he is forced to flee, running to Arrah and Rudjek, warning them that Efiyah is coming back.

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the other two, though the story was still good. Arrah being resigned to her death throughout the whole story really wore on me, and she and Rudjek never really got a break, which was really frustrating. Efiyah was a proper brat, but I understand why Evelyn was so fascinated by her, since she truly symbolized the future of demon kind, being the first new demon born, and able to bear more children. But Efiyah having the body of a young woman while having the mindset of a young child was eerie, especially with her relationship with Tyrek. I do think the final battle was over-crowded. The additional orisha were a bit much and really did nothing story-wise other than give Efiyah additional numbers. I am glad the epilogue happened, because that really would have made me furious, if everyone got a HEA except them.

Master of Souls is the finale to the Kingdom of Souls trilogy. This entire trilogy was darker and grittier than I anticipated, and this finale ended better than I could have dreamed. I had no idea how Rena Barron was going to tie everything up, especially when all hope seemed lost so close to the end of the novel, but it was spectacular.
This is definitely a YA series, but upper YA more so. The themes and content, in my opinion, make this a YA series I would see suitable for people who mostly only enjoy adult novels to read. I would love to get this whole series physically and reread them someday.
The way Rena Barron created such a complex world of gods, magic, twists, and deceit kept me on the edge of my seat. I plowed through all of these books (and I am STILL mad at myself that I forgot the release date for this book) and want more from this author. Barron is incredible at writing tension and dark atmospheres. One of the characters whose perspective we get in this finale was incredibly unique, and while I hated what this character did, I enjoyed the short chapters we got in their perspective.
If you like books that involve meddling gods, themes of morality, forbidden love, dark magic, and crazy twists, this is a series for you!

Daho, i love you.
Rudjek, i love you. Ale Daho bardziej.

Master of Souls was satisfying and slightly better then the previous book, but I still struggled to fully connect with the characters of this world. Everything else was really top notch. Rena Barron crafted a beautiful world, with rich mythology and history. Barron's writing style was extremely fluid. One thing I never touched on in my past reviews, but I will here, is that this series leaned very heavy into romance. I can handle a little but, but this felt very heavy handed. With that said, if you enjoy a YA series that is a little darker, has rich world building, and romance then I think this will be just right for you.

I really enjoy this series as a whole. The writing remains super engaging and fun and even though it has been a little while since I read book 2, I jumped right back into this world and the story without any issues in this conclusion. I didn't personally love the actual ending for the series. A lot of things feel like they happened to easily in the end and some events from earlier in the series end up getting reversed in a way that I find really frustrating. Still enjoyed this book overall, it was very fast paced and I was happy to finally reach the end of Arrah's journey, but the very end just didn't land as well as I had hoped.

I need it to be noted that I am not necessarily into YA at the moment, nor did I remember what happened during book 2. But if you binge read this series, I could see it being a higher rating.

In all, I just think we had a childish “bad guy” and the “good guys” were too good in my opinion. It was just a lot of back and forth and the big battle sucked. I just wasn’t into this as much as I thought I would be as a finale book.

I'm not crying, you're crying! But I did get very misty eyed.

This was everything I wanted in the finale that maybe wasn't a finale of Arrah's story. I really don't have much to say other than I loved it, I loved the story, the details and all the small weaving of everything.

I hope Rena will revisit this world again one day and give us a glimpse of the beginning that this ending left us with.

I love this book and how everything worked out in the end. There were moments where I was like I can't take it and I was ready to stop reading because my heart was breaking over the whole situation. But yes I am glad I kept going. It was worth it. I am sad that the series ended. But I want to see more from this author.

I thought this was a fantastic end to the trilogy, it took me on such a journey just like the first two books, so many unexpected twists and turns. The ending was wonderful it just felt so right, can’t wait to see where Rena Barron takes us next

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

More like 3.25-3.5… It was a decent ending, but there were sections where it dragged because of the immense amount of detail about characters who never even spoke. This is a common issue for me when there’s such a sprawling world. Sometimes it works well, and other times it just doesn’t land for me. I know other people love it, though, so I’d definitely recommend to those folks!

A solid ending. I am content with the happy endings all around, though I do think some didn't deserve it. I liked the pacing of this book, and the final battle was written really well. There was good build-up. I think some of my favorite parts, though, were the rivalry & jealousy between Rudjek & Daho.

The message in this book was clear: second chances. For once everyone got a happy ending, or at least a form of peace in the end. The author had me in the 1st half, pretty much all the way to the very end. This was a nice conclusion to an excellent series.
