OMG! I honestly fell for Taylor Swift- Brendon Urie cover of the book! This is magnificent! This heart wrenching story about grief, finding your own way to embrace your life, seizing the moments, discovering your soul mate is perfect kind of tear jerker romance/ coming of age fiction I truly recommend!

The story told by Jake and Sarah. They both lost Alex. Sarah’s boyfriend and Jack’s best friend. They have different ways to deal with their grief. Sarah misses him so much, holding back herself as Jack still talks with his best friend, seeing his therapist, trying to deal with his complex feelings about Sarah. He liked her before but Alex warned him that they couldn’t last and then Alex and Sarah started dating. He never found the right time to come clean about his adoration. And now this is truly the wrongest time! He can only watch her from distance! But thankfully fundraising project dedicated to Alex brings them together. As they spend more time, they start freely talk about their loss and pain. They become closer at each day.

Sarah cannot confront her feelings about Jack because her best friend Ash who is sister of Alex still blames Jack for the night of the accident where Alex fell and passed away.

Both of them try to resist their attraction and stay friends. But how can they keep lying to themselves when the people from their inner circle obviously understand how they fall for each other!

It was realistic, sentimental, moving book with two adorable and resonating characters. I liked the book as much as I loved its BEAUTIFUL COVER!

Special thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins Children’s Books/ Balzer +Bray for sharing this wonderful digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.

For lovers of Goodbye Days and History is All You Left Me, Someone You Loved is an emotional and heartbreaking YA about grief, told in a dual narrative. This story is utterly beautiful, so put it on your TBR and read it, everyone!

What makes this story so good is that the pain of both Sarah, who lost her boyfriend, and Jake, who lost his best friend, is so palpable on every page, even when they do everyday stuff like going to school or working or sporting. Or maybe just because of that. They both deal with their grief differently and comfort one another during nightly talks. But then they start to ‘like’ like each other more and more (and maybe even did before).

I rushed through Someone I Loved, and I smiled, had a lump in my throat, and smiled again. Tears sprang into my eyes reading that scene at the shrine and ran down my cheeks when Jake shared his thoughts with dr. Hipster.

The writing is actually quite basic but, therefore, incredibly effective. It doesn’t shy away from the grief Sarah and Jake are both dealing with, and it doesn’t make things more beautiful. It just is what it is, two grieving teens while trying to pick up their lives again.

I received an ARC from Harper Collins Children’s Books and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

"Someone You Loved" by Robin Constantine is such a fabulous, well-written book about grief and love after loss! I had no idea what I was in for when I requested this one, but it blew me away with how good it was. It is a heavier story than anticipated, but I loved the balance between weighty topics and high school lightness. I liked the main characters, Sarah and Jake, who have both gone through something unimaginable at such an early age. Alex was Jake's best friend and Sarah's boyfriend, and he died unexpectedly and tragically. Jake hears Alex's voice inside his head and has intense nightmares at night. Sarah cannot forget what she and Alex had and counts their days together as if he were still alive. Sarah and Jake initially find solace together in talking about Alex and their memories of him, but their relationship quickly becomes much more intense. They both have to figure out how to navigate their blooming feelings about falling in love with each other, which may potentially set off Ash, Alex's sister/Sarah's best friend. The best part about this book is that the characters are so well-developed! Robin Constantine makes them feel lived-in and authentic. Her writing cuts deep with emotion. The story is well-paced and doesn't overstay its welcome. The entire thing is pretty predictable, but that doesn't stop it from being successful. I was certainly captivated from beginning to end. All in all, this is a cute, shockingly weighty young adult romance that may leave you crying and swooning at the same time.

Thank you to NetGalley, Robin Constantine, HarperCollins Children's Books, and Balzer + Bray for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.

Thank you Harper360YA for an early copy of this book!

Sarah feels unmoored following her boyfriend’s sudden and tragic death. Their love story was cut short after just two sweet months together, and now all Sarah can think about are the moments she and Alex should be sharing. Sarah distracts herself by consoling Ash—her best friend and Alex’s sister—by rehearsing for the school play and working at her aunt’s cafe. But none of that is as comforting as her nightly talks with Jake. Jake is not ready to move on. Unable to sleep at night and “mopey”—according to his girlfriend, who doesn’t understand why he isn’t ready to jump back into partying—Jake is wracked with guilt as a witness to Alex’s death. His one source of joy is talking to Sarah. But between their growing closeness and his taking over as captain of the basketball team, Jake worries he is co-opting Alex’s life. Both can’t help but wonder if they’re betraying Alex—and Ash—by acting on the feelings they can no longer deny. Given all that stands in the way, is their relationship worth fighting for?

Sarah feels guilt and seemingly fear about moving on from Alex’s death. Having only dated a short time, for a lot of the book she is confused about how she should proceed and move forward with her life - namely how she gets back into dating again. Sarah isn’t a bad character to read, her POV is relatively engaging. I just didn’t feel hooked on her story. I felt bad for the situation she was in with Alex, but that was about it, unfortunately. She felt a bit immature considering her age and I wish her thoughts weren’t so repetitive. If she was a bit more mature feeling and had more varied thoughts, I think I could have liked her a lot.
Jake is wracked with guilt over his presence when the accident occurred and Alex died. He doesn’t know how to act around Sarah, especially when he has always had feelings for her. I do think Jake was an interesting character but he felt rather samey-same throughout the book. There didn’t feel like there was much growth for him which is a shame as that’s something I always hope to see in a story. Reading from his POV was interesting, especially his inner dialogue with Alex but I think we saw more variety with Sarah’s.

This book is being marketed as perfect for fans of You’ve Reached Sam. Considering how much I adore that book, I knew I needed to read this one. Unfortunately, this book didn’t live up to my expectations. The plot was okay and whilst I appreciated getting to see a dual POV and in depth thoughts on managing grief, it all fell rather flat. It didn’t feel like there were highs and lows, it was all very one note to me. The characters did feel a bit superficial which was a shame. There could have been more substance to them and their interactions with each other. The romance was okay. There was a lot of longing mixed in with guilt so any eventual romance felt a little insincere in my eyes. The ending was alright - a little rushed but it did tie everything up and didn’t leave any big questions on my mind. Sadly, I think that I was just eager to finally reach the finish of the book. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend this one in a hurry.

Overall, Someone You Loved is a story that shows you just how grief can affect people in different ways.

⭐️⭐️/5

Someone You Loved is an emotional and romantic tale of two teens who fall in love while grieving the one person who makes their love impossible.
Sarah was Alex’ girlfriend. She’s had only been together with Alex for a little over two months before it happened but that doesn’t make her grieve any less painfull.
Jake was Alex’ best friend. He was there when it happened and he’s battling all kinds of guilt and grief in the months after.

What stood out the most for me was how I instantly connected with the charactres. Usually some kind of build up is needed to feel like you know them but somehow the author managed to write about Sarah, Alex and Jake like I already knew them. I understood what they were feeling and how confusing it all must be for them.
We get to see the many faces grief has and how the people who are left behind try to deal with that.
Now this all sounds extremely heavy but it really isn’t written like that. I would say Someone You Loved is a light read, you’ll breeze through it, but it does deal with serious themes. The beauty of that, though, is that it also brings us feelings of hope and comfort.

The characters in this book all felt fitting. The story is written with a dual point of view from Sarah and Jake which (as I said above) was really well written and then there’s the side characters that add to the story and make it feel integral. None of the characters felt too much or like a fill in. It all ended up being a complete, fitted puzzle.

The third act felt a little bit out of character to me, like how the characters reacted didn’t seem to suit how they were written earlier in the story. So that felt a little bit out of place, it didn’t however diminish the joy I had with reading this book.

I can recommend Someone You Loved if you like contemporary books, YA, a little romance and also if you’re looking for a book that deals with grief.

Thanks to harper360YA for the e-arc.

Sarah's boyfriend of two months, Alex, dies in an accident. Jake, his best friend, was there and feels like he was part of the reason the accident happened. The two find solace in each other, a place they least expected it.

This sweet YA novel deals with the aftermath of loss, grief, and moving on. I did not find this to be as sad as I expected it to be, and that's mainly because I could not connect with one of the MCs, Sarah. I am NEVER a fan of lack of communication in a novel, and Sarah was the definition of lack of communication, and it drove me crazy.

Weirdly, my favorite character was Holly, Alex's ex-girlfriend before Sarah. 🤷🏻‍♀️ She was the most dynamic character, having come to terms with her grief throughout the novel.

The love story here was slow burn and sweet and, overall, I enjoyed it.

While Someone You Loved is touted as “for fans of You’ve Reached Sam,” I actually found this book to be more enjoyable!

Grief and young love are already so fraught and mired in high-intensity emotional landscapes, but gratefully, this novel focused on the after and the finding a way to live and love again versus being trapped by the grief.

The take is refreshing and wholly enjoyable with so many instances that made me chuckle and smile.

Someone you loved opowiada historię dwójki osób z które straciły najbliższą osobę. Jedna z nich najlepszego przyjaciela, a druga drugą połówkę.

Polecam ♥ ♥ ♥

I received this book as an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sarah feels unmoored following her boyfriend’s sudden and tragic death. Their love story was cut short after just two months together and now all Sarah can think about are the moments she and Alex should be sharing. Sarah distracts herself by consoling Ash (her best friend and Alex’s sister) and by rehearsing for the school play and working at her aunt’s café. But none of this is as comforting as her nightly talks with Jake. Who is Alex’s best friend and was with him te night he died.

It was such a sweet and sad story, but I loved how Sarah managed to move on (the end that see sees the “Kermit” chair, that was such a lovely scene in the book).
The same goes for Jake, he relives that night and can’t change is. The end when he said to Alex (in his head) “it’s okay, I’m good now”, he finally moves on. I love that part. Jake is such a good guy, with his hart in the right place.

I thought Ash was a bit selfish, but in the end you see that she is just insecure and tries to deal with so many things after losing her brother. She and Sarah are good friend, but dealing with their loss in different ways, but they kept talking to understand each other.

I liked the story and the characters, but it is really a teen romance book.
But overall it was a really fun read and a good (and sweet) romance book.

This was a well done story about love and loss. I like Constantine's books and have yet to really feel disappointed in any of them. I also liked that this story presented some aspects of mental health in a relatively healthy way. While Jake is not openly sharing his therapy with everyone, he does bring it up in context appropriately and in a way that recognizes that he has seen value in talking to someone about how he is feeling and also that how he is coping is okay too.

I genuinely liked both characters. Maybe a little less Sarah of the two, but only because I had a bit of an adjustment around how she was still caught up in losing a boyfriend she had hardly really dated. I had to remember actively that he was also someone she had grown up with, given that he was her best friend's brother, and that loss is loss. Just like love is love.

The other characters around them were interesting although none really became the focus, and that's ok. If you liked other Constantine books, then this one will likely resonate. And if you like Sarah Dessen, you'll likely also enjoy this as there were a lot of elements that resembled some of the Dessen plots I like.

All in all, a good story about two people coming together in challenging times.

Thank you to Harper360YA for providing me a copy!

This is a heartbreaking story about grief and love after loss. And it war a really beautiful and important story, but it could’ve been much better. First, the characters were very young. Which, or course, makes the story even more sad, but also a bit unrealistic for me. The way these teenagers were talking and handling the situation felt as if they were at least 5 years older sometimes. And Sarah had only been together with Alex for a few months, but in the book it seemed as if they were together for years. Don’t get me wrong, also a few months is long enough to love someone, but it was just the way it was described sometimes.

That being said, the characters were loveable. Especially Jake. He lost his best friend, he was there when it happened and struggled with his feelings for Sarah a lot. He has had such a hard time and deserved so much love. Sarah was okay, not the most amazing character, but also not annoying or something.

I really liked that all sides of Alex’s life were talked about. So not only his relationship with Sarah, but also his friendship with Jake, the relationship with his sister, and even the relationship with his ex-girlfriend.

But overall it was a beautiful and heartbreaking story and I really think you should read it.

As the description says, Sarah was dating Alex when he died. They hadn't been dating long, but she's grieving. Only she doesn't feel like she has the same right to grieve as others. His sister and her best friend, Ash, has been struggling. She has good days and bad, and Sarah wants to do everything she can to help Ash while also grieving herself. She doesn't go to their house much anymore, and she tiptoes around some things with Ash not to make her cry or break down. One of those things is Alex's best friend Jake. Ash doesn't blame Jake for the accident, but he is a constant reminder of her brother's death.

Jake is struggling also, but he's in therapy for witnessing his best friend's tragic death. He wants to reach out to Alex's girlfriend to ensure she's okay, but he doesn't know how it will be received. See Jake actually had a crush on Sarah first, but Alex is the one who ended up dating her. Sarah appreciates how she can talk about Alex with him in a way that she can't with his other friends or even Ash. They begin talking on the phone at night because they both have trouble sleeping.

Jake and Sarah have a slow-developing relationship. They start out as acquaintances and almost allies in their grief. They officially build to secret friends and even more. But the hiding and sneaking around threaten what they've built together. They have a story where they both have to work on themselves apart from their relationship. Yes, each character helps the other through their grief and struggles, but neither solves all the problems that the other faces.

Some of my favorite parts of this book are spoilers, so I'll have to leave them out. I did get frustrated with the characters at a time of two. I mean, they are teenagers, so poor decisions are bound to happen. But what I liked most of all was how realistic everything felt. Things that might have been dramatized weren't. Sarah is grieving, but thankfully, she wasn't in love with Alex or her grief would have been even worse. Jake was present, and the two had been drinking, but he's never villanized by their friends or especially Alex's family. Sarah occasionally lies to her mom. I like how her mom doesn't exactly let her off the hook for them even while feeling compassion for her. Yet, Sarah also doesn't like lying even when she does it, she feels really guilty. Not guilty enough not to but...believable. I can't say that I loved Mike and his marijuana usage, but I did like how he seemed to utterly adore Ash. I also liked how the relationship with Buzz played out.

A lot of jumbled ramblings all to say that Someone You Loved gets 4 Stars. Have you read Someone You Loved? What did you think? Let me know!

“Someone You Loved” by Robin Constantine, is a poignant and emotionally charged novel that explores the complexities of grief, healing, and the unexpected bonds that form amidst tragedy. With a delicate touch, the author takes us on a journey through the lives of Sarah, Alex's girlfriend, and Jake, Alex's best friend, as they navigate the aftermath of a devastating loss.

The story begins with a tragic accident that claims the life of Alex, leaving Sarah shattered. Seeking solace following her profound grief, she finds herself clinging to her friendship with Ash, Alex's sister. She also takes refuge in her aunt's café and in rehearsals for the school play. It is through her nightly talks with Jake, however, that Sarah discovers a semblance of peace and understanding.

Jake, feeling adrift, and haunted by nightmares, is unable to come to terms with the loss of his best friend. His deep connection with Alex, coupled with his guilt and fear of overshadowing Alex's memory, complicates his growing bond with Sarah. As Jake grapples with his inner turmoil and newfound responsibilities as the captain of the school basketball team, he struggles to determine whether his happiness is an act of betrayal to his deceased friend.

The strength of this novel lies in its exploration of grief and the various coping mechanisms people employ. The characters are well-developed and show their struggles and weaknesses in a way that makes the reader feel for them.

Constantine’s prose is engaging and evocative, effortlessly conveying the characters' emotions and capturing the essence of their grief-stricken world. The pacing is steady, allowing the reader to become fully immersed in the story while maintaining a sense of anticipation.

The novel does have a tendency to lean towards melodrama at times, with certain plot points feeling slightly contrived. Additionally, some readers may find certain aspects of the characters' behavior or decision-making unrealistic or lacking sufficient exploration.

Overall, “Someone You Loved” is a thought-provoking tale that skillfully portrays the profound impact of loss on individuals' lives. Through its well-drawn characters and emotive storytelling, the novel offers a touching exploration of grief, healing, and the delicate balance between holding on to the past and embracing the future. Readers seeking an emotional journey filled with love, loss, and personal growth will find solace within the pages of this captivating book.

I really enjoyed the depth and the emotion portrayed in this book. I think the author tackles it quite well.
I really like Jake and found him to be a caring and emotive character who helped push the book along. However, I found myself struggling a bit to connect with Sarah, though. And I found some of their decisions to be a little questionable.
Otherwise, it's quite enjoyable.

My grateful thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for this ARC in return for an honest review.
I can already imagine the thousands of eager readers who'll gravitate to this book with just one glance at its striking cover, featuring two teens with a decided resemblance to....well, no one will have any trouble guessing who.....
And they'll be in for an even nicer extra bonus.......the book inside between the covers....
What I loved most about "Someone You Loved"......for a refreshing change, it offers a sweet, poignant teen romance without an excess of plot baggage that might threaten to bog down its forward momentum.
The tragic accidental death of Alex a much beloved high school basketball star, leaves a cloud of grief over the community......and most of all, those closest to him who loved him dearly. Those deeply grieving for Alex include his younger sister Ash, Sarah his girlfriend who's also Ash's best friend and Jake, Alex's best friend and fellow teammate.
Even more conflicting feelings run through these three well drawn characters. The stricken Ash can't even look at Jake because she resents and blames him for her brother's death, since he was there when it happened. Sarah, whose romance with Alex was brief but fiercely intense, can hardly deal with her sense of crushing loss while consoling Ash. And Jake, guilt-wracked and uncomfortable in replacing Alex as the team's captain and guiding light, also contends with his lifelong crush on Sarah. He's held an unrealized love for her long before she ever became Alex's girl.
From that primal, basic set-up, you can easily see there this is going. Connecting in their shared grief and thrown together to plan a fundraising event in Alex's memory, Jake and Sarah.......well do I really need to say more than simply.....Jake and Sarah.
The slow but sure development of their romance is handled with exactly the right amount of tenderness and the anxiety that threatens to tear them apart. Sarah fears her growing union with Jake will anger and hurt the already wounded Ash, while Jake dreads anyone thinking he's appropriated every aspect of Alex's life......as both star of the team and boyfriend to Sarah.
You can't help rooting for Jake and Sarah every step of the way and even better. author Robin Constantine deals with the supporting characters around them with a knowing gentle sympathy.....even when a few of them might annoy you at times.
Not an earth-shaking story by any means, but you can never have enough heartwarming experiences like the one this book delivers. Never mind who's on the cover.....the really good stuff's on the pages.

Someone You Loved was such a sweet, emotional read. We meet Sarah, who is having a difficult time moving forward after losing her boyfriend, Alex, who was also the older brother of her best friend, Ash. Sarah is spending her summer working as often as possible in an attempt to distract herself from her sadness. She finds herself gravitating to the chair Alex always chose when he visited her at work, and her family has noticed that she seems to be stuck, always working, not really getting out and living her life. Enter Jake, Alex's best friend, who was with him when he died. Jake has long been interested in Sarah, but is also grieving the loss of his friend, so when he hears about a memorial bench that's been erected in Alex's memory, he invites Sarah to visit it with him.

Jake has been dealing with the loss by having conversations in his head with Alex, usually about Sarah. Alex had known of Jake's interest in Sarah, but then Sarah and Alex started dating, so it stands to reason that Jake hears his friend when he is thinking of her because he is uncomfortable being attracted to his dead friend's girlfriend. When classmates decide to put together a scholarship in Alex's name, it brings them together. But will Sarah be able to move on? Will Jake's conscience allow it? And what about Ash? She says that Jake is a walking reminder of everything that happened, so how will she feel if something starts to happen between Sarah and him?

Someone You Loved carefully talks about grief, the need for therapy, and how difficult it can be to continue on after a loss. I was surprised at how quickly I became invested in the characters; my eyes were wet almost from the beginning. I felt like the falling in love aspect was pretty realistic in that it wasn't instant, it took months to build and progress. The ending left me feeling satisfied and a bit uplifted. I would definitely recommend this book, whether you usually read YA or not.
