When John Harper left Marsh Island, he never intended to return. But when a sudden expulsion from the military left him with the clothes on his back, he discovered he had no choice. Coming back to his hometown, John quickly realized how much could change in six years. All it took was a train derailment to cripple the shore town and a new highway to bypass it and seal its fate. With help from his friends Ana and Pen, John tries to cope with his new life in a town he hardly recognizes. And he will be quick to learn that sometimes, no matter how hard you run, the past never stays buried forever.
For full disclosure, I bought the book because I know the author. I had never read anything of his before, so I was not sure what to expect. What I got was a really good book. I have to start with the setting. I could actually see the town, smell the salt air, and feel the humidity. The setting is a character in itself. As for the characters, I immediately cared about them. I wanted to know what would happen to them, and I was sad when things went bad. The plot kept the book moving and there were things I didn't see coming. All things considered, I hope this is only the beginning for this author because I would love to read more.
