Overmorrow: A Coronado Story

Rate this book
Meredith Percy has a story to tell. And it better be good.

Someone at the rehab facility suggested that the reason her recovery may have stalled is because she is still clinging to her past. Perhaps. But maybe there is a reason she can’t move forward. Meredith decides to risk losing what she’s already gained and sneaks off, seeking answers from questionable sources. The quest she’s sent on is stymied when a freak summer snowstorm traps her in a roadside bar she swears shouldn’t be there. Even so, the kindly old barkeep is glad she made it and is not at all surprised when two more misfits arrive. They have stories to tell, as well.

Elijah Blanchard was on his way to a funeral. Yvonne Martinez was on her way home after visiting an old friend. As with Meredith, neither of them is where they expected to be. What’s even more troublesome is learning that none of them can leave until their secrets are revealed and their destinies made clear.

Meredith Percy has a story to tell. And you can believe it.

Or not.

3.5

Meredith, Elijah and Yvonne meet at a strange bar that isn't supposed to exist. All three are seeking some place where they can wait for the snowstorm to stop or at least weaken before they can proceed with their journeys. When the bar's strange waiter asks them to tell him their stories, they all comply. Each one of them has been battling with a demon, and each one of them has an important role to fulfil.

The book is a confession. Meredith herself is writing about her story to someone called Evan, someone we won't know anything about until later in the book. The structure is quite interesting, because there are no chapters. True, it's a short book, but at the same time not having chapters made it more difficult for me to read. It's a good thing that I am on holidays and have all the time, because otherwise reading this on the bus/train like I usually do would have been hard. I think I know why the author decided to structure the book this way; Meredith isn't really a storyteller, she is confused, and she writes down all her impressions. She is just a human being telling a story to someone, a story which isn't exactly "normal". Plus, she herself admits that she needs to write everything right away before she forgets what happened.

The story itself was pretty good. I was hooked, maybe not from the beginning, but definitely as soon as Yvonne started with her story. I liked how the book is both real and surreal, how the reality is mixing with fantasy and a little bit of horror. It's not the first book I read in which our inner demons are shown on the outside, but it was definitely different from the stories I usually read.

Now, why did I give it 3.5 stars only? One reason was the chapter thing I mentioned before. My second reason was that the book needed some editing, as there are quite a few words that are misspelled. Some of them were more evident than others, but there were a bit too many for me to just ignore them. My last reason is the ending. I wasn't expecting this book to have a sequel, and I thought the very last part was a bit rushed, but this is my very own personal taste.

I did really enjoy it though. It was entertaining and interesting, and I am definitely curious to see where the rest of the story goes with the demon thing.

Supernatural mystery

Overmorrow: A Coronado Story by H L Cherryholmes is a supernatural story surrounding three strangers who mysteriously find themselves in a bar owned by a strange man called "Angel". Interestingly, all of them seem to have thought they were heading in a different direction, only for them to find themselves far from where they were meant to be.

As they escape a storm, they take shelter in the bar and are offered food and drinks on the house, provided they all tell Angel a story. What's surprising is they all have a 'weird' story to tell. All of them tell a story that sounds both real and supernatural.

The story is told from Meredith's point of view, as she's writing to someone called Evan, who is mentioned several times, but we don't know who he is until much later in the book. I didn't particularly like this writing style because I found it confusing and felt that it interrupted the pace of the story.

From the start, Cherryholmes weaves a story that draws you in. If you look past the fiction, you'd realize that there's an overall theme of letting go of the past, and how clinging onto it, can often cause more harm than good. It was a great story with just enough mystery that kept me turning the pages.

This captivating book describes the story of Meredith healing from rehab as she recovers from an intense mental breakdown solely from clinging too much to her past. Meredith decides to escape on her journey to find answers that have been lingering with her for a long time. During her travels, she seeks some unique sources and is about to learn a few things that will change her life forever. A random snowstorm entrails Meredith and a few others inside a bar in an unusual and unexpected location. They can't escape until everyone uncovers their deepest secrets for telling their stories, whether everyone believes it or not. Meredith's story is shockingly enchanting. The characters will connect with readers instantly, the plot is exciting, and the imagery is brilliantly showcased as if we were also customers at the bar.

I found nothing to dislike about the book. I was engaged right from the beginning. I always love books that take you away to escape from reality. The book was well-edited and written. Since some explicit words are used, I recommend this book for adults who love an adventure and a compelling story. I can't think of a rating of less than five stars.

This book reminded me a lot of a John Cusack movie called Identity. It's not quite as thriller-y, but the "whose narrative can you trust" element is the same. Letting this story slowly unfold was a pleasure to experience. There were some moments of confusion, where it felt a bit like the author knew exactly what he wanted to be saying but I, as the reader, was not fully clued in on the minutiae of it.

That aside, this is a masterful feat. I applaud H.L. Cherryholmes for his ability to see a complex story to completion in a way that captivates the reader and keeping us engaged and hanging on right up until the final moment. And the moments of stretching reality into fantasy were brilliant. It felt very accessible, as if I were there too, but grounded in a way that let me believe it could actually be true. The fantasy element was integral to the strength and emotional relevance of this book.

I deeply enjoyed getting to read this and I look forward to more from Cherryholmes!

"Overmorrow: A Coronado Story" has a dark undertone that grabs a hold of the reader's attention and never lets it go. Author HL Cherryholmes demonstrates a phenomenal storytelling ability. As the reader, you truly feel like you are right there in the setting with the characters - you feel a part of the world that Cherryholmes has created.

The overall vibe of the story felt similar to what someone might feel when watching a film. Again, this just speaks to Cherryholmes ability to paint a picture for the reader with the utmost precision and detail. Ultimately, "Overmorrow" proved to be a great escape after a long day at work. Finished in one sitting! That's how you know a book is of the highest quality! Bravo, Cherryholmes, bravo!

This has a very confusing introduction. The main character starts off by talking to someone named Evan, but he isn’t there, and the reader has no idea who he is. Several pages in, and the reader still doesn’t know. It moves at the author’s speed, and doesn’t leave any time for catch up. There were several times that I felt quite confused.
However, it does have a great transition from reality to fantasy, and some very unlikely characters. I thought it was insightful for the author to make the female protagonist an alcoholic, because that is something that I’m only used to seeing with males, in real life and fiction.
Overall, I think the writing style is a little muddy, but it does have some good qualities.

While Overmorrow shows some promise in urban fantasy, I still found it to be overwhelmingly confusing. The book sort of drags the reader along while they struggle to catch up. Besides that, the characters are very unique, and I liked reading about all of their quirks and attributes.

It was also kind of cool how strangers soon became fast friends. I could tell that there was this theme of holding on vs. letting go of the past, and I thought that it added depth to the novel. In sum, it is certainly a unique book, but I don’t think I can strongly recommend it.
