An excellent resource that I’m glad to have in our library for our own growth and that of our church. It may seem odd to read a book on death while still in my twenties, but this book makes insightful points about how practical preparations are a form of stewardship and caring for others. The format was ideal, making it easy to locate particular questions or read from beginning to end, moving from more theological/doctrinal to pragmatic questions.

Nobody wants to talk about it, but the truth is, if you were once born, you will someday die. It’s how life works. Conversations about death only occur when facing it when it’s fierce and imminent. That’s why I bought this book and why I am recommending it to you.
.
Elizabeth Reynolds Turnage has written this primer, Preparing for Glory: Biblical Answers 40 Questions on Living and Dying in Hope of Heaven. If you’re curious, I want you to know what to expect as you read and learn from this book.
.
As the title suggests, there are 40 questions and 40 Biblical answers. I appreciated how the author organized the questions into seven different categories. I didn’t read them in order, because my interest was piqued when I recognized the topic of Aging, Sickness, and Dying. The five questions included under that topic [Part Three] pertained to my current situation. Just two of the questions answered are: What does it look like to live wisely and graciously as we age? And How do we know which medical means to employ at the end of life? Those questions are two of the 40 questions covered in the book.
.
Each question is answered in short essay style, a Bible verse and scripture passage are included with each answer. A QR code for each question directs readers to a supplementary article that further enhances what can be learned about the question. Turnage offers a written prayer relevant to the topic and suggests ways to reflect even more on what was read.
.
I’m sharing the topics covered in the book to give you an idea of the breadth of what the author has in store for you. Part One: Eternal Glory, Death, Christ’s Resurrection, and Heaven; Part Two: The Day of the Lord, The New Heaven and the New Earth, and the Final Judgement; Part Three: Aging, Sickness, and Dying; Part Four: Living, Preparing and Sharing Our Legacy; Part Five: The Church and Preparing for Glory; Part Six: The Journey of Grief; Part Seven: Ending Well
.
Each of the parts has a series of questions that will help you prepare well for yourself or help others prepare well for those they leave behind. Learn here about “practical legacy” and “spiritual legacy” with how they are different and why both are valuable.
.
Certainly, there are other books on the topic. This one is gentle on your soul, full of truth and information you need to help those you love understand what needs to be done in the transition from here (life) to there (death).

Elizabeth Turnage’s Preparing for Glory: Biblical Answers to 40 Questions on Living and Dying in Hope of Heaven contains emotional, spiritual and practical help for engaging the last stage of our lives or those for whom we care.

From how to gather important legal and financial information to what will happen after we die, Elizabeth fills her book with factual information which she painstakingly researched. She devotes chapters to help readers deal with the idea of death, so that it is not something to dread but to anticipate with hope. The reader will discover what to expect in heaven, a heaven not characterized by floating on clouds playing harps, but one gleaned from biblical text.

The author does not shy from difficult questions such as, “Why do we have to die? What does Christ’s resurrection mean for the future of our bodies? Is there an art to dying? What information and documents do we need to gather to prepare our loved ones for our incapacitation or death? What arrangements should we make for our bodies after our death? How do I care for myself as caregiver?”

Ms. Turnage suggests ideas in crafting legacies which include, but also go beyond, finances and burial. She poses passing on skills, family stories and personal journeys. She addresses aging, grieving and repairing relationships.

Besides a daily topic to consider, each devotion gives resources for further study, such as scripture passages, books, videos and songs. A pertinent prayer and thought for reflection conclude each day’s meditation. Snippets of poems and lyrics sprinkle the book with encouraging and memorable quotes.

Elizabeth covers all the bases for meeting, head-on, the fall and winter seasons of life, including many areas I would have forgotten, if not for her book. Her writing engages with easy to grasp explanations without dumbing down content. I heartily recommend buying the book for yourself and for people you love who want to be ready for, and not fear, death.

Preparing for Glory is a succinct question-answer guide to help prepare for the end of life, either your own or someone dear to you, whether it seems near or farther away. Questions 1-14 answer questions about eternal glory and what happens after death. The rest of the book covers topics like aging graciously, dying well, end-of-life issues, funeral services, financial documents and legacy, emotional and spiritual legacies, caregiving, grief, etc. I especially appreciate the way it encourages me to live with a legacy mindset—loving well, sharing stories, being practical about possessions. I would recommend it to those who are retired or nearing retirement, to help establish a mental framework for the latter part of life.

I'm not a big reader...so if I read a book, it's because I really like it! This book is so easy to read and understand. I love that the chapters are short and to the point...and then give additional information with QR codes for further encouragement. Preparing for Glory is helpful and covers pertinent subjects, and I highly recommend it!

This special book is a gift for those who realize we are leaving a legacy, in our remaining time on earth. It is a gentle and practical guide as we prepare for our own death, simultaneously helping us prepare our loved ones. It acknowledges the pain, even the anticipatory grief that we experience as caregivers and as the sick ones coping with losses. I read this book as one of those seriously ill ones, finding it to be a beautiful gift as I tangibly prepared for glory, but with our glorious hope in Christ. I highly recommend this helpful book, for it points us to the steadfast love of our Lord, in both life and death.

Elizabeth Turnage has written a helpful, encouraging book about a topic many of us would prefer to avoid – death. At once practical and hopeful, “Preparing for Glory” covers both material and spiritual matters pertaining to finishing well. The forty questions Elizabeth addresses include topics from loving our families well by having our affairs in order and making our end-of-life wishes known to rejoicing in the hope of heaven and the assurance of eternal peace in the presence of God.
