This was my first book by S.L. Brown, and I’m so happy I read it! The Toy Maker is a delightful mix of sapphic romance and unapologetic sensuality that had me hooked from the first page. Brown weaves together so many amazing tropes, including age gap, dark romance, erotic elements, friends to lovers, kink, romance after 50, and, of course, TOOOYYYSSSS.
Genevieve Catrell is a truly unique and refreshing protagonist. At 50, she’s a successful entrepreneur who has made peace with leaving love behind—until she finds herself tangled up in an undeniable connection with Jolene. I absolutely loved the romance-after-50 aspect of this novel; it’s been rare to see stories that center mature women in such an empowering, sensual, and heartfelt way. The chemistry between Genevieve and Jolene was electric, and the build-up to their relationship had me on the edge of my seat, rooting for them the whole time.
The story’s humor, depth, and passion make it stand out, and I was thoroughly charmed by Genevieve’s journey. The only reason I’m giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is because the pacing was a little uneven in places. That said, this book is a great read, and I can’t wait to dive into more from this author. If you’re looking for a romance that’s bold and unapologetically steamy, The Toy Maker is absolutely worth your time!

Another great book by SL Brown, this book is very detailed to the point that you can actually visualize what is being described in your mind's eye.
I found the plot to be engaging and straightforward, and I very much liked the interactions between the two main characters. Additionally, I thoroughly enjoyed the inclusion of the characters from the previous book, 'Little Red,' as it was delightful to witness Soraya and Yazmine's continued happiness.
The sexual tension between Genevieve and Jolene is palpable from the beginning, and throughout the book, I found myself hoping they would get together. Their connection was undeniable, and it was definitely worth the wait.
I highly recommend this book and the two preceding books in this series.
