The Other Wolf #2

Guardians of the Pack

Rate this book
I hate finding corpses. For some reason, my enemies think dead bodies work as a communication method. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer a letter.

When I find a pulverised gargoyle on my lawn, I can’t help but think things are about to get rocky. The gargoyles don’t expect me to look into the death, but who can ignore murder on their doorstep? Ex-soldier Greg Manners knows all about violence and he thinks that the ogres are involved. Deadly or not, I’ll go toe-to-toe with their lethal king if I need to. I’m determined to find justice – but just when I start investigating, one of the pack’s children is snatched.

I’m in a race against time to find him when it turns out that Bobby isn’t the first stolen child. I’ll have to navigate Other world politics to work out what the purloined children have in common. Maybe if I know why they’ve been taken, I’ll discover who took them. Because the clock is ticking and I am all out of suspects.

Esme and I have to work together to find the kids, before it’s too late…

Another amazing book with that wow factor that I am addicted to!

I love these characters and the world they are from but even more so, I love how the series has a reading order that gives us one timeline but two main storylines. The Other Realm & The Other Wolf intertwine and give us a remarkable and fascinating world filled with characters I have fallen in love with!

The mysteries of both worlds are closer to becoming solved but at the same time, other mysteries are surfacing... the more you find out, the less you know!!

Absolutely love this series!!

After our favorite wearwolf finds herself with a dead body on pack lands, she has a mystery on her hands. But would it really be a Heather G. Harris book if there wasn't a mystery?? Finding her family was a theam I was all in for, and I was not disappointed!! I really hope we get to dig deeper into this storyline in the next book! Loved Jinx's quick cameo! Can't wait for the next book to come out on YouTube! Everyone, go listen to these books and support these authors!

I want to knock this down to a two because of the tropes it contains, but ... I'm rising above.
Rise above ... Breathe ... Rise above.

Tropes that are a death nail for me:
1. A character that makes TSTL decisions because they're taking the moral high ground.
2. Soap box dialogues
3. Lack of communication as a plot device. This author loves doing this under the guise of "it wasn't my secret to tell" or that the characters are under a magical geas so the "can't" tell. This book went even further though than her last ones where the one character left a message to call them asap and the MFC either wanted to keep her head in the sand about the issue or she just forgot about the phone call. SO ANNOYING and frankly unbelievable.
4. This MFC also just expects everyone to revolve around her. It's off putting (sour face as I'm typing this)

Fun and mysteries and as one mystery is resolved another pops up. Totally enjoying Lucy's emerging into her new role and finally a bit of romance revealed. We also found out who's the birth parents.

Oh my god, what another amazingly fantastic story by Ms Harris. Yep she's done it again, keeping me hooked to the pages while making me balance precariously on a knife edge of emotions. And bonus points for having gargoyles feature in this one as they are my absolute favourite supernatural creature, even if they do swear like sailors and are as blunt as a spoon (I was still in gargoyle heaven). I can't rave enough about this authors ability to suck me in to her storytelling and literally breathe the world she has so intricately created, making my enjoyment of these books next level. Along with the twists and turns that have my heart pounding one minute and dropping into my stomach the next, I never know what she going to put me through next and I freaking love it (even if she does make me cry). Yep this series of books have definitely become one of my all time favourites and I'm dying for more.

When Lucy finds the mangled body of a gargoyle on her lawn, she is determined to find the killer and bring them to justice. Even if the evidence points to one of the Other Realm's most deadly races - the ogres. Not even going up against their king is going to deter her from getting the answers she seeks, but before she can start her investigation, one of the packs children is kidnapped. Discovering that Bobby isn't the only 'Other' child that has been taken, Lucy finds herself in a race against time to work out what these kids have in common, and to get them back safely before it's too late....

One of the things I love about Lucy is her eternally optimistic nature making her one of the most relatable characters I've read, of course that doesn't mean she can't be tough when she needs to be, and for all her self doubt about her capabilities of running the pack she is absolutely smashing it. She has an affinity for bolstering people up and seeing their worth while helping them to become the best versions of themselves, and the people that are truly against her she doesn't bother to waste the time trying to impress them. Yes she has the more softer heart compared to her wolf's more bloodthirsty tendancies, but when her past comes back to bite her, she not only deals with it, she learns from it. Making her a force to be reckoned with, which is why I'm totally enamored with her character.

Greg is really just perfection personified, honerable, kind and hilariously funny especially with the nicknames he gives Lucy, I literally thought he couldn't get any better until he did. Not only does he have Lucy's back as her second, but he's there for her emotionally too, lending her his strength to help put her back on her feet when she needed it the most (swoon). And although he took his time making his move, which became the running joke amongst their friends, when he finally did I was left a melting mess.

Ahh my sweet deadly assassin Bastion, once again I couldn't contain my excitement when he appeared on the page, and I'm starting to look at him like a present I can't wait to unwrap. The more I learn about him, the more secrets he comes up with. Yep I'm definitely looking forward to Amber's series to finally get all the puzzle pieces of this mysterious griffin. And of course I'm wondering just how he and Amber are going to fare but one thing I do know, it'll be explosive.

I'm going to be heading onto book 3 as I have a feeling after that cliffhanger the next book is going to be an earthshaker. So if you haven't read these yet, what are you waiting for? I promise you'll love them. Highly recommend 😁

This world and series just keeps getting better! Thank you Heather for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Picking up a month after shit hit the fan with the Black Tourney, this story starts with Lucy dealing with a new problem - a dead gargoyle on her front lawn. And from there, we dive deeper into the world of the Other by adding not only more depth to the gargoyles, werewolves, elementals and griffins, but now we’ve added killer ogres into the mix.

Lucy is such a fun character, and I love seeing her and Esme work together to solve this latest mystery that literally dropped on their door step. I also like that Heather’s starting to show that there’s more to Esme that meets that eye, and she has her own secrets outside of just being the wolf that Lucy shares her body with.

And Greg 😍 I don’t know what the dragons have going on but between Emory, Greg and the rest of the brethren, I am IN LOVE with what these men are bringing to the table.

I can’t wait for Saviour of the Pack! 💜 If you love fantasy, mysteries, romance and laugh out loud commentary - you definitely need to pick up both The Other Realm and The Other Wolf series. They’re quick reads, and so much fun!

I’m pretty new to this author, and having read this second book in this series, I’m so glad I’ve found her. This latest in the series is well-written, fun, and engaging. Lucy is such a fun character, and she is so together even if she’s not sure she’s doing the right thing. I love her wolf Esme, Greg, Bastian, Ares…just about every single character brings something good to the table. There is mystery, romance, and action to keep you entertained throughout the book, and I am just loving this series so much. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Thanks to the author for my ARC copy (and super sorry for the late review 😅), this is my honest review.

Lucy and Esme are a kick ass character combo and they take us deeper into the mysteries and inner workings of The Other in this book. Want to know how Gargoyles came about and why they're so cagey with their names? Jump in.

And the fact that Lucy and Greg are finally, FINALLY defrosting? Woohoo! I'm not mad. Haha.

I'm looking forward to the next book and all the secrets/truths I just know will be ferreted out.

Great read

Not your average shape shifting romance! I have found that a lot of shapeshifter books are about the same they have the same bones, and everything else, just a mole or two, is different! This book was not Like that at all the bones and everything were completely different. I had to guess at what was next instead of the obvious Being what was next. The main Character is amazing and strong in a not bulldozing kind of way. This was a great read I highly recommend.

Lucy and her pack have another murder to solve as well as kidnapped children. This book shows how Lucy is getting better at becoming the alpha she wants to be with great interactions between the characters both pack and others.
Again, this book has magic, vampyres, gargoyles, dryads, elementals, witches, wolves and griffins. There is a fair amount of action, mystery, tension, a growing romance and questions – both answered and new.
I found this book easy, quick reading as all of her books. Onto book 3.
Great book and highly recommended.

I was privileged enough to be selected as an advanced reader for this book and I’m happy to say I will be purchasing it and any that follow.

Guardians of the Pack by Heather G Harris is Urban Fantasy at its finest! It’s a spin off of her Other Realm series, which I highly recommend, but this series does stand on its own. It smoothly picks up where Protection of the Pack left off and engaged me from the start!

Here’s my rundown:
Lucy continues to adjust to her life as alpha of the pack. She is helped largely by her second in command, Greg Manners. Their slow burn romance reaches a satisfying conclusion that had me cheering along!

But not everything is not coming up daisies for Lucy, Esme, Greg, and the pack. Someone or something is sending an ominous message that has all of The Other on high alert. When injuries and disappearances occur, they must put their differences aside to uncover the attackers and bring them to vengeance. Will they succeed? Read and find out! But be ready to not be able to put it down! I’m already counting down the days until the next installment!

a mixed bag of narratively good elements and nicely executed storytelling threaded through with a questionable main character moments, and an unsatisfying ending

Rating: 3.5⭐️

Book 2, and my issues with this series and characters continue. Mostly due to the character of Lucy, but the lack of foundational knowledge about the world building is also a big part of the problem here.

Turns out there’s 4 different Other Realm series that have carryover characters and overlapping roles and storylines here. If you’re not familiar with them, then it’s a problem because Harris isn’t one of those writers who spends the necessary time in their stories filling in knowledge about their other work/universe. You either know or you don’t.

Which leaves any new readers lost or scrambling for information, a trying aspect of the book when there’s already several others to deal with.

The interesting elements here, such as the werewolves actually having two distinct personalities or beings within them, is a very good one. The wolves have names, personalities and in most instances, have been denied by their “human counterparts” , suppressed by werewolf history and pack mythology to a certain roles that had denied them their identity. Lucy and Esme are, currently, the only highly functional communicating pair.

This is a great storyline and it will be the one that carries me forward if I do so, into the series as I hopefully see it further expand and detailed.

I rated this novel higher because the main theme of kidnapped children and its investigation was suspenseful and kept me invested. It was especially due to the side story of the young werewolf and the gargoyles. The leader Bob and the youngest cub were east to relate to and feel emotionally attached to as well.

But, once again, that ending was not satisfying. The villain ended up as much a product of why this MF character is so problematic and the issues that continue to plague her. (“I didn’t feel so sorry for him anymore “). No words.

Just one more huge SMH moment and scenario.

I’m actually considering heading back to the Glimmer series, the first in the Other Realm universe to see if beginning with the main series will eliminate the world building issues and carryover problems.

Not sure Lucy had shown much development as a person yet so it’s hard for me to want to invest further time in reading her series.

Guardians of the Pack (The Other Wolf, #2) by Heather G. Harris is a bit of a mixed bag of narratively good elements and nicely executed storytelling threaded through with a questionable main character moments, and an unsatisfying ending.

Le sigh.

If you haven't read the previous books, Stop, go back and read them. This book begins where the previous one ended.

If you will recall, after attending the Black Tourney's she snuck into the back and freed the creatures that had been forced to fight against their will. One of them, a Unicorn named Ares, has now made his home on pack lands. Lucy feeds him and considers him a member of her pack. He helps protect the land and patrols with her wolves.

It's just after dark, and there's a body on their lawn. The last patrol was an hour before, and it wasn't there then and there is nothing on the cameras to show who dumped it. The body is that of a gargoyle and he wasn't exposed to sunlight since he's not stone. Greg feels this is a test or a threat, either way it's not good.

Lucy shifts and Esme, her wolf takes over and they follow the path of the horrible scent to where the fencing has been cut. Following that to the road where the trail ends. After a perimeter check they return, following a car that entered through the gates.

Gargoyles arrive to take the body and Lucy knows one of them. He told her to call him Bob, she would have to work harder to get his real name from him. Somehow as they take the body away there's a hint for Lucy about gargoyles, she's just not sure what to make of it.

To top all this off, a visitor arrives asking for sanctuary. This presents a complication since she's Theodora Frost. They find out from Elena that's she's Beckett Frost's sister, not the cousin they expected her to be. The Devon pack is obviously toxic, but they need to be sure Theodora is not a spy before accepting her.

Bobby a young pup wants to get his wolf early, but Lucy holds him off by explain that while she's sure he'll be an exemplary wolf, he needs his education so he can contribute to the pack in other ways as well. His mother takes him off to school, but later finds he never made it. Amber is tired when she arrives, apparently, she's done another scrying, one with no result. In a roundabout way Lucy gets the information that a fire elemental child is missing as well.

When everyone is gathered, including Bob who Amber calls by his real name, they do the scrying.

The investigation now has to continue since scrying didn't work. That also means a witch was involved, which Amber is not happy about.

A visit to Rosie's, a visit to Alessandro's and another to the Ogres with Bastion as added protection, more than keeps us on our toes. Then another child goes missing, this time a Dryad.

I love the conversations between Esme and Lucy, they almost always amusing. Then of course the investigation has twists, turns, more complications and on top of all that Lucy is still trying to find out who her birth parents were. Let me say now, I didn't see some these answers coming at all.

I am already reading the next book.

Crikey! So my review for book one in this series had my love of this part of The Other Realm Universe feeling tepid at best, but thank goodness book 2 came along to change my mind. So there is still the pack politics and Lucy finding her way as pack leader weaved into the story line which if you read my review of book #1 then you know it was a drawback in my opinion but there was more of an actual mystery to this one that involved not just the wolves; but the griffins, gargoyles, witches, ogres, dryads, elementals and vampyrs all found their way into this story and it was all the more richer for it.

Lucy barely had any down time since having to hide the pack's hand in the death of two wolf council members before she stumbles upon the dead body of a gargoyle. Then the very next day one of the pups goes missing along with an elemental and a dryad child. Lucy and Greg along with a bunch of the colorful characters from The Other Realm Universive must ban together to find the kids, with only some of the groups being helpful, they both risk their lives to locate the whereabouts of the kids. The connection between the gargoyle's death and the missing pup unlocks the hidden knowledge of how a gargoyle is made and what this has to do with wolves and a curse the witches place upon them hundreds of years ago.

During all this Lucy is still trying to find her birth parents and some of the things she starts to discover reveals that Lucy may not be as a stranger to the Other as she had originally thought. A suprise visit from Jinx (aka Jess), her best friend, who has been looking into her birth parents for her finally gives Lucy the answers she needed about the fate of her birth parents and her biological extended family.

Declarations of love amongst all this turmoil is just what Lucy needs to ground her and give her the hope and the confidence to tackle being a great Alpha. And I'm as excited for Lucy and Greg's story as I am for Jinx and Emory's story.

One more book to go in this series before I can get back to Jinx's series and not feel lost and even though I really enjoyed this book in the series I don't know if I'll keep reading it after I finish up Jinx's series or not maybe I'll figure it out after I finish book #3.

“Guardian of the Pack” is a good installment in the Other Wolf series. The starts with Lucy discovers a dead and quickly decomposing body of an gargoyle. She notifies the gargoyles and they come to pick him up. They are highly secretive refusing to reveal the decedent’s name and they do not want Lucy’s help in tracking down the killer.

Then, one of the werewolf pups Bobby is kidnapped and now the pack is desperately trying to find out who might have taken him. However, they discover that he is not the only paranormal child that has been taken. An ogre and a sprite child are missing too. Will they work together? No! Small mindedness is a hard thing to get around. So, Lucy takes it on herself to find the missing kids.

Meanwhile, Thea, wolf from the Devon pack shows up requesting to be considered to join Lucy’s lack. She is Ace’s sister but she is timid, afraid and carrying a secret. Lucy is suspicious of her motives. This is a matter Lucy will have to deal with later because the lives of three children are on the line and they come first.

Okay, with all of that being said, this second edition in the series read a little flat for me. Why? The action scenes were good but so many things felt rushed and were treated by a surface view. There was definitely a lack of depth for me. What do I mean? Well, let’s look at Lucy’s budding relationship with Greg. After waiting for them to finally get together they do the horizontal mambo but it was anticlimactic. Basically it’s, “I want you….. I want you too and in they morning they had breakfast.” Really??????? I understand that every author has strengths. For some it’s action scenes, for other it is sex scenes etc. However, even if you are uncomfortable or don’t want to write sex scene, write a suggestive “romantic” scene especially after making your readers wait for the main characters union. I’m just sayin.’

It was a good installment and I am still very much interested in the direction of the plot especially with the killer cliffhanger ending but I hope that the author writes with a little more depth in many aspects of future reads.

I enjoyed this one a bit more than book 1 - I suspect because Ms Harris needed to spend less time setting up the world from Lucy's viewpoint, so she could spend more on telling the story.

It's great seeing Lucy slowly growing into her role as pack alpha, and the pack gradually warming to her. It was also great seeing Jinx's brief scenes - I'd like to have seen more of her, but also, I get that this is Lucy's book, and it wouldn't do for Jinx to overshadow her.

Seeing more of some of the B characters from the Jinx set: Bastion and Joyce particularly. And of course, there are the gargoyles, who are just FUN. And I like the way the romance thread develops in this instalment too - I will never not be a fan of romantic partners communicating like grown-ass adults, and that's pretty much what they do.

On the negative side, I found the big reveal for where gargoyles came from underwhelming - I think maybe it just needed more development than it got. And also I'm becoming less and less a fan of Esme's literality as the books go on - it made me laugh initially, but it's starting to feel just a bit overdone now: using up a fair amount of page space without really adding anything to our understanding of Lucy and Esme's relationship.

But, those niggles aside, I really did enjoy the book - I think I sucked it down in a little over 24 hours. And it's just 2ish weeks now till book 3 drops, so I'll definitely prioritise that one when it does.

📚Book Review📚

🐺Guardians of the Pack🐺 is Book 2 of The Other Wolf series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Stars

In this book, Lucy has established her rule as Alpha of The Home Counties Pack in the Other realm. She’s started to find her feet, along with her wolf Esme, but the ground is shaky, especially when she finds a ☠️ gargoyle on her front lawn.

It doesn’t take long to escalate as Other children start to go missing and it becomes clear that something sinister is happening. While they are investigating the missing children, Lucy and Esme take a few typically bonkers risks, and she decides to take the leap to start looking for her birth family.

Things ramp up and Lucy and Esme, navigate the complex politics of the Other realm in order to save the children from powerful enemies with a vengeful agenda.

Heather keeps up the same entertaining pace in this book, making it almost impossible to stop turning the pages. The 🔥 between Lucy and Manners definitely starts to heat up, and I loved every second of it! They’re a great couple, and it doesn’t take away from Lucy’s strength in any way, which I love 💕

The back and forth between Lucy and Esme is top notch, the same as the flirty banter between Lucy and Manners. Getting to know the rest of the pack on a deeper level was also amazing, as was delving deeper into the gargoyles and Lucy’s relationship with Amber DeLea as well.

Its a fantastic follow up to Book 1 and a great hype-book for Book 3, 🐺Savior of the Pack🐺

You know, no matter how crazy Lucy’s life has become, being a new werewolf, becoming alpha of her pack, enacting eye-for-eye retribution on a (literally) killer ex, getting her pack to accept her and follow her lead, she really thought she’d gotten a hang of things in the Other. That was until a mutilated gargoyle showed up on the mansion’s front drive one morning! Okay, fine, some enigmatic foul-mouthed gargoyles show up to clean up and that’ll have to be that… right?

But when the Pack’s youngest pup is kidnapped from his school, Lucy and Greg Manners have a job to do. Throw in that it turns out the Pack’s pup isn’t the only creature in the Other to have gone missing and now this search has gotten a lot bigger than anyone thought. Add to all of this mixed signals of romantic interest coming her way, ogres, elementals, vampires, and a huge twist that leaves our favorite Alpha rather flat-footed, and things just keep heating up for the Home Counties Pack and Lucy.

Steamy, funny, intelligent, exciting, and with more twists than a bowl of spaghetti, this second novel in the "Other Realm" sister series, “The Other Wolf” is one I highly recommend. This is a phenomenal book that is fantastically fun, witty, and just the right bit of seductive! Beautifully narrated, engaging, and something that simply cannot be put down/put on pause, this is a must-listen for any Urban Fantasy reader! Enjoy!

Well, Lucy’s back, and I’m so glad! And once again, her days are jam-packed with managing her pack, and solving mysteries. The book starts with a bang, as a murdered gargoyle’s body is dropped on the lawn of the pack house, right in the middle of movie night. She just gets started investigating this, when one of the pack’s children is kidnapped. Then there are more dead bodies on her property, and more missing children, and people are turning to her for help.
Lucy, Esme and Greg have to maneuver through politics, and relationships, in the Other, in order to figure out answers that no one wants to give. Even Esme (Lucy’s own inner wolf) is not being totally forthcoming, turning her back to Lucy and refusing to talk (which is very funny!). We meet more supernatural species than you can shake a stick at, and let me just say that this book perfectly illustrates the theory that “no good deed goes unpunished”!

By the end of the book the mysteries are solved, and Lucy and Greg have finally, FINALLY admitted their feelings for each other (whew! About time!). For good measure, we also learn who Lucy’s birth family is, why her parents were killed, why witches and gargoyles hate each other, and how gargoyles come into existence. Lots of interesting answers that I hope will be explored further in the next book!

I’m not spilling anything you all really need to read this book.
I loved all the supernatural, the story is so well written. It sucks you right in and won’t let go of you until the end, and then it makes you scream for the next book.
Soooo please I’m waiting ♥️ Heather you are amazing.

Gargoyles, Werewolves and Witches, oh my. Part murder mystery, part romance. I had a few gripes about book 1, and literally none of them popped up in this book, so I am all one board with it.

We continue to follow along with our trying-to-wrangle-the-pack newish alpha lady and boom, dead body dropped on her lawn. Of course, lots not good about this -- it's a challenge to authority and security (gruff and 'sexy' in that devoted-military-sidekick way Greg Manners of course goes into overdrive about this). But why this body? Why a gargoyle among werewolves? And then, someone snatches little Timmy-- er, Bobby. Go find him, Lassie!

The big themes we're tackling in this book are: as a newcoming in this weird world of magic, all of the infighting and lack-of-info sharing really lets criminals get away with a lot. What can we (or, rather, our alpha) do? Go at it like a brick through a window. Which, if I were a werewolf alpha, is just how I'd probably do it, so I have a lot of empathy for this character and the trouble she gets herself into in this book.

Go read it! Don't you want to know what werewolves and gargoyles have in common? Why was Bobby snatched? What this has to do with the larger mythical-creatures-community as a whole? What's going to happen with all that simmering sexual tension?

I’m determined to find justice – but just when I start investigating, one of the pack’s children is snatched.
I’m in a race against time to find him when it turns out that Bobby isn’t the first stolen child. I’ll have to navigate Other world politics to work out what the purloined children have in common. Maybe if I know why they’ve been taken, I’ll discover who took them. Because the clock is ticking and I am all out of suspects.
Esme and I have to work together to find the kids, before it’s too late…

Heather's Notes
I liked this book better than the previous one. I think Lucy is growing on me. However the "big" reveal of who Lucy's parents are fell a bit flat. It didn't really invoke any emotion in me. Still I will keep reading, but I must say I miss Jinx and Emory :(
