The Ghost of Grym: A Short Story

Rate this book
In the unforgiving world of Victorian-era Grimsby, a haunting tale unfolds-a story of stark marital inequality. Blossom, recently widowed with no children to claim her late husband's estate, faces a desolate future. Bereft of family, she finds herself at the mercy of a merciless workhouse matron.

Stripped of not just her modest attire but her very dignity, Blossom is thrust into a life of servitude, a fate far harsher than she could have imagined. Yet, the shadows that shroud her new existence are more chilling still. In the shroud of night, her ears are tormented by the piercing screams that pierce the air, and the whispers of girls vanishing without a trace.

As terror tightens its grip on Blossom's fragile existence, the question looms-will her own anguished cries be the last sounds that reach her ears? Explore the depths of despair and the fight for survival in this gripping Victorian narrative, where darkness conceals more than just the iniquities of society, and courage is the only light in the oppressive gloom.

Blossom’s husband had passed away and being childless she was kicked out of the house and sent to the workhouse. She sees reflections of people, are they ghosts, is she losing her mind?

This is a haunting tale done in the true form of horror short story. Although, short it builds suspense and a feeling something evil is about. The main character is defined well and the narration completes the haunted atmosphere. It is also a story about how unfairly women and the poor were treated when workhouse were in practice. I love a good haunting story and this one is easy to read and definitely gave me the chills.

"The Ghost of Grym" is a very short, very dark, very disturbing book, in the very best way.
The descriptions of the people and places in the story are such that I found myself cringing at sounds and checking corners as I read.
It's just as well the story is so short. My nerves might not have made it through a full-length novel!

From the sad and intriguing beginning to the shocking end this is a hugely emotional rollercoaster in such a short story. It is amazingly written and has such beautiful descriptions for a bleak tale. Definitely worth the read!

This is a very unpredictable story as the ending caught me by surprise! It was clever and the author made the depression and fear by main character so real, I felt it myself. This is an awesome short read!

Fantasy, vampires and witches, etc are not generally the type of books I read. I do, however, like historialcal stories. The description intrrigued me; Victoria times, Grimsby, England, and the workhouse.

There was a time when I didn’t know what a workhouse was, apart from it being a place the poor went to live when they were destitue. I’d not known then what a cruel and degrading places they were. People were blaned and punished for their curcumstances.

In this storyl the description of the workhouse was eerie, shocking and frightening. It had atmosphere, just a small window into the dark cruel world. The character were well drawn and rounded. For a short tale it told so much and the brief glimpse into the a dark past was enought to tell you everything you need to know about 1800s England.

Highly recommended!
