The year is 1383, and the Wolf of Badenoch has conducted a terroristic campaign across the highlands to increase his wealth and land holdings. Now he's turned his sights from Scotland to the Kingdom of the Isles. Seeking to keep the Wolf’s superior fighting forces out of his island nation, the King of the Isles turns to Chieftain Hector MacLean for help. A survivor of the Hundred Years’ War, Hector’s reputation precedes him. Brutal, clever, perhaps the greatest warrior Scotland or the Isles has ever produced—as if the man has a gift for killing. But after changing his life, Hector has no interest in returning to his old ways. As an alternative to war, he agrees to forge a marriage alliance with one of the Wolf’s allies, hoping to gain their fidelity and protect his family and clan. After surviving a brutal first marriage, young Irish widow Cara O’Ballevan arrives in Lochbuie Clan Territory, her sole prayer to make a peaceful home with the MacLeans, but the clan is wary of her as an outsider. After praying for help, she happens upon a kind man beneath a bright moon, unaware that he is the chieftain and soon to be betrothed to another. Over a series of meetings, Hector and Cara help one another, encourage one another, and begin to come to terms with a past they’re both trying to leave behind. When Cara faces a threat during a clan dispute, Hector discovers that the deadly combatant he used to be isn’t gone, but lurking just beneath the surface. This time, the lethal warrior within him takes up watch over Cara. As her gentle spirit roots deep into his heart, Hector knows she can never become his wife. A future with her could only lead to war and disgrace. Yet he cannot stop himself from falling in love with the one God entrusted to him – the woman he isn't supposed to marry.

Had the best time reading this! Releases on February 27, 2024.
- Clean, Christian Medieval Romance - Scottish Protective Hero & Irish Widow Finding Love - Scottish dialogue, history, political intrigue and clans - Ruth and Boaz Inspired (Not a Retelling but some elements inspired a unique story) - Great faith content, forgiveness and redemption - Author's debut novel - Looking forward to the next book!
This book is set in 1383 and if you love a good Medieval Scottish romance, pick this up! I became interested in this story when one of my friends recommended it to me and it did not disappoint. It felt like such an original story to me and as someone who LOVES Scottish stories, I was here for it! The faith content in this was so beautiful, it blew me away. We see Chieftain Hector and Irish widow Cara. They each have been through so much. Hector struggled with drinking and a past reputation less than to be desired and Cara went through spousal abuse for 10 years. When her husband passes away, it seems she has a new start is among her as she follows her mother-in-law to a new area. She had some traits reminiscent of Ruth and I loved that. Hector is betrothed to someone he doesn't want to marry for political reasons but when he meets Cara, they fall in love and he has to decide what to do. I enjoyed seeing them get to know one another throughout the process and their romance was sweet, even if I did want a little more communication between them at times. :)
I loved the faith and hope throughout this story the most and how the Lord was with our characters to help them overcome their trials and tribulations. I also love the faith elements were pulled from some of Ashley's own story as well. Solid debut from Ashley and look forward to the next book in the series.
Thank you to the author for providing a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Content notes: Some scenes of Cara's previous husband being abusive, Hector's alcoholism shown but also shown is his story being redeemed by Jesus, attempted sexual assault, romance is clean and no language.
Some books just make me go “Man, I’m so glad she had the guts to write this!” A historical romance tour de force and make it decadently Medieval, no less.
Redemption and romance- this is definitely worth some subgenre adventuring, because, even if the battle-torn, minimal-bathing Dark Ages are not your usual time period of choice or even if predominant uplifting themes of Christian faith are not something you seek out, the romance beats on this one drum a steady call to HEA chasers everywhere that full swoony satisfaction is on the horizon.
After fellow readers’ raving, my expectations were high, and I came in assuming we’d get a lovely angsty romance amongst tons of political intrigue and clan warfare, and, though it’s definitely there, I’m happy to report the romance is as center stage as it gets here. So, so, so much to love in this class difference story, but, for me, a hero is defining. And, Hector, second son, prodigal brother, Laird MacLean, chieftain of Lochbuie, Beithir of the Battlefield, the ProtHector, Literal and Figurative Wallclimber, Berserker of TBRs, Vanquisher of Book Slumps, etc, is such a new favorite. This is all you need to know: we like our heroes fiercely, savagely protective, but teachable. Sure, I can never get enough brogue, but the amount of grovel, gestures, awkward bumbling, “What I say?” fumbling and full out apologizing from this warrior giant had me dancing an inner-jig (awkward even in my head, but no less celebratory). The Medieval scenario just lets him shine in all his natural leader, work-in-progress hothead, all-in-for-her glory.
And, if I’m so on board with the hero, the heroine better be right there with him. Cara matched him the whole way with her brilliant long-suffering survivor arc. All her impressive competence, endless kindness and steady faith more than deserving for Hec’s insta-devotion, which not only falls first, but falls as hard as a week-old bannock.
I really have no inexpert opinion notes to give because of how with the characterization, the progression, the falling-in-love giddyness, the epic whisking away, the individual depth and redemption, the mutual rescuing, absolutely everything was given. Have to mention the confidently understated writing, the history-nerd-senses-tingling glossary, traveling the magical Scottish Hebrides, a third act tailor-made for Laura Frantz fans, and how it’s beyond exciting to love a book/world so much and know she’s got 8 more in her bag of swoony story wonders coming.
Content notes: Kissing Only, married very vague fade to black. Hero struggles with alcoholism and war PTSD. Mention of past womanizing. Mention of past child abuse. Heroine widowed survivor of domestic abuse (on page flashbacks) and infidelity. Predominant mention of infertility. Heroine suffers on page violent attack and on page attempted sexual assault. On page sword violence. None of the above are graphic.
ETA: I just listened through the audiobook as well. Perfection. Male narrator with a great accent and the grit of the voice needed for Hector. So good. *****
Utterly Magnificent. I hadn't planned to read this today, but I'm so glad I picked it up. I started after dinner and finished at 1:40 am.
The story is enchanting. The writing itself is beautiful. Wounded, protective hero. Threads of Ruth and Naomi. Deep longing. Hearts that ache for one another. A Divine command to "Protect her."
Hector and Cara are layered characters each with history of abuse (in different forms). Each have come to know the God of the universe and to put their trust in Him - but that does not make things easy. There are deep lessons to learn. There is fast fall and slow burn here. Smoldering feeling. Brashness that must be tempered. Trust that must be learned. Mature and gorgeous writing. As a reader, my faith was challenged and encouraged. This is not a sickly sweet read. It is engaging, heart-racing, and at the same time, feels like home in the midst of the storm. I could not possibly recommend it enough
I’m gonna just swoon away. This will be an author I will auto buy. Just phenomenal.
On the practical side, the dates are listed at each chapter and in the table of contents. There is also a dictionary at the back for terms.
So. Well. Done. Fans of Carrie Cotten, Tamara Leigh, Kathleen Morgan, Michelle Griep, and Jody Hedlund will likely love this.
A million stars, and grabbing my friends' hands so we can put a million thumbs up.
WOW! “The Radiance of the Moon” by Ashley Worrell is one of my favorite reads this year! I’ve never read a Christian work of fiction like this book!
This is a tale set in Hebrides, Scotland 1383. It follows the main protagonists Chieftain Hector MacLean and Irish widow Cara O’Ballevan. This tale of love set in the midst of recovery, vindication, and redemption transported me to another place and time! This tale kept me turning the pages! The faith content in this book was amazing!
If you like warriors, castles, love stories, and you want to read something fresh in Christian fiction then this is the book for you! The ending was amazing!
Make no mistake about this book it is not light and fluffy—much like life this book can be gritty! What is this book about then? Well, it’s so many things…it’s about courage, strength, standing up for what you believe in, hopes and dreams, facing the consequences of your choices, great sorrows and abundant joy, love for the Lord, self worth, overcoming past hurt and past mistakes, struggles, forgiveness of others and of self, and finding God in the midst of all of that! And of course love for your soul mate! On some level I can personally identify with both Cara and Hector which makes this even more gripping and meaningful.
I probably don’t need to say it but this is a clear favorite! This one gets all the stars! I will definitely read more by this author. This is an amazing start to a series! Looking forward to the second book! ❤️🔥 Book crush!
Audiobook notes: This is the only negative thing I have to say. The audio wasn’t great. I ended up reading more of the book on my kindle because of the narration. When the narrator would read the general story line, it was fine. But anytime voices were used it was hard to understand and didn’t fit the characters well either. For someone who can listen to very dense fantasies at 3x with no problems, I had to slow this one wayyyy down to understand what was being said.
BUT NOW ALL OF THE HAPPY THINGS BECAUSE I LOVED THIS BOOK.
This was a lot more heavily Christian fiction than I generally go for, so while this is one I’m usually not drawn too, I thought it everything was beautifully crafted. I think with the setting and time period the faith aspects were woven in well and showcased beautiful moments of connection and love.
I adored the hard fought relationship between Hector and Cara. It often felt like one step forward, two steps back, but then those moments of clarity and understanding would come and I loved how the communication lines began to open. I was a smitten puddle over many moments. I loved the conflict and just the right level of action. The heat and passion of true love and the strength of friendships.
A fabulous book. I am blown away this was a debut and I hope we get more books from this author soon!
Overall audience notes: - Christian Historical Fiction Romance - Language: none - Romance: closed door - Violence: moderate - Trigger/Content Warnings: spousal abuse (physical), loss of loved one, childbirth, mentions of child abuse, attempted assault, being stoned
"I want to understand everything about you. I want to be encompassed by your thoughts. I want to learn who you are. And I want you to learn me." "Everything?" "Aye." "That could take a long time." "I've been waiting a verra long time. I'm no' the man I used to be. I never tho' God would give me a wife. I want to honor the treasure he's given to me."
Radiance of the Moon by Ashley Worrell
My review honestly won't do this book justice, so here goes nothing.
Wow! This book is incredible! Do you love books by Nichole Van and A. L. Sowards? Then I have a book recommendation for you! The Radiance of the Moon by Ashley Worrell has all the Scottish vibes, angsty backstories, redemption, and reminded me very much of NV's and Sowards's books. The story, the characters, the angst, the setting! I was completely immersed in the story and had a hard time putting this book down. The narrator for this book did a phenomenal job! I don't usually like male narrators, but Guy Barnes did such a great job and helped with the immersed feel of the story.
Hector. Tall, strong, gruff. But also loving, protective, and fierce. I loved his redemption arc. It was truly beautiful and deeply felt. One of my favorite parts was his fierce loyalty to his family and clan, and also his determined love and caring for Cara. I loved their meet cute!
Cara. She is beautiful, strong, graceful, talented, intelligent, and witty. She comes from a difficult past and struggles with her feelings. My heart broke for her in her pain and anguish but healed when Hector reassured her and loved her despite it all. I enjoyed watching her grow throughout the book, and I even teared up at some point.
I also enjoyed the Christian messages, which were good for my soul. The suspense and the political intrigue kept me on the edge of my seat, and I could hardly read fast enough. I am excited to start book 2. I definitely recommend this one to anyone who loves Historical Romance, especially the medieval era and/or with a Scotland setting.
Favorite Parts: Meet cute He helps her He protects her She prays for him Irish/Scottish characters Soft, graceful intelligent FMC Strong gruff MMC Redemption Spiritual and Emotional Healing He prays for her Forbidden/secret romance Competition Beautiful angsty romance He teaches her self-defense Loyalty and betrayal Suspenseful end Audiobook narrator The whole book!
"Dinnae rob me of my blessing. You are my gift. Wherever God leads us, or whatever He calls us to, His provision is already there. It might be just enough, not an abundance. But it is all that we need."
My content guide could be considered spoilery, so I will hide it.

I added The Radiance of the Moon by @byashleyworrell way back when it was first announced in earlier 2024. It ticked all the boxes of my favorite things:
❤️ Scottish MCs ❤️ Redemption ❤️ Hope and Forgiveness ❤️ Touch Her and Die ❤️ Battles and Suspense
And I was scared. I was scared that it just couldn't live up to the expectations in my head. Scottish romances are so hard to find and they are some of my all time favorites.
So I waited. And waited. And waited some more. Always making excuses as to why I just couldn't read it yet.
And then a few weeks ago it was the perfect storm: ❤️ I started a new goal to read a Christian Romance every Sunday ❤️ The Paperbacks went on sale ❤️ And I had just finished another Scottish romance and wanted another one
I finally decided to sit down and read The Radiance of the Moon.
And ahhhhhhhh I'm going to be kicking myself for a long time for not reading this book sooner! It lived up to all my expectations and more!
Hector was the perfect opposite to Cara. He was fierce, strong, protective, and yet so soft with Cara. Seeing him change his entire life and protect all those he loved made my heart melt. Seeing Cara take down her walls around her heart and let Hector truly see her made me cry.
This book showed me that we are all more than our scars or our past. Especially when we lean on Christ to want to be changed.
This book showed me that we are all stronger than we think. Maybe not physically but there is power in mental strength and trusting Christ's plan.
It is taking everything in me to pace myself and get other work done and not binge the other two books asap! Like ahh I want to so bad, but those two books will now be my prize for finishing my other work.
So seriously if you are looking for a series that will bring you directly to the action of the Scottish Highlands with mystery, suspense, depth, a rollercoaster of emotions, faith and hope. Please please please pick up this book.
Do NOT wait to read it. Because yes, books don't expire but my heart needed this one ages ago.
Reasons to read: - Medieval Scottish Romance - Strong Faith elements (Ruth/Boaz inspired) - Political intrigue / Clans of the Isles - original plot (with twists!) - Sweet romance - Themes of redemption and forgiveness - Series Starter
My Thoughts: A good Medieval romance is hard to come by, a Scottish medieval romance even more so. I was intrigued when I heard of a new author writing in this genre, and excited to read. By the time I finished, I knew that this was an author to watch, and a new series to follow. Refreshing and unique, Ashley Worrell’s debut novel, The Radiance of the Moon, is an exciting and faith-filled read set in the Isles of Scotland.
I loved the main characters, Chieftain Hector and the Irish widow Cara. Both characters had their share of demons to fight. Hector struggled with a hard past and tried to forge a life for himself and his people despite his reputation. I admired his strength in trying to overcome these difficulties and learn from his mistakes. His character growth was steady throughout the story, and truly embraced each interaction with Cara. Cara on the other hand, also had a great character arc. She was a victim of abuse during her marriage and it left its mark on her in more ways than one. I loved watching her find her strength and confidence again and enjoyed her slowly win over those around her. Cara reminded me of the biblical Ruth, following her mother-in-law to a new land and working hard for a new future.
The relationship between Hector and Cara was sweet and developed at a good pace. I liked watching them grow more comfortable around each other, to the point of having an easy banter between them. Their relationship grew stronger as they dealt with the scars of their pasts together. They had good chemistry, and I could not see them paired off with anyone else.
The plot shifted often, allowing for quieter moments and surprising turns. While there were elements of Ruth/Boaz’s story, the plot itself was original, filled with political intrigue, world-building, and a lush cast of characters. Sometimes it was difficult to keep track of the plot points and characters, but I understand the need to have a good foundation for a series. I will also say, that faith is a strong element in this book, to the point I would label this book as an inspirational or Christian medieval romance. However, it is also a story packed with moments of humor, romance, and action. I'm excited about the potential of more stories. I cannot wait for the next book!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
I was already at a point in my life, struggling with my mental health, battling with God, and struggling with my religion and beliefs. This book made me cry, made my open my eyes, and, for the first time in 5+ years, step foot into church on a Sunday morning.
Plot: This book is going to destroy you in the best way. The characters constant battle with their beliefs, forgiveness, battling what the world is telling them versus what their God is telling them is so real, and raw, and you feel so deeply for all of them throughout all of the struggles that they are going through.
Characters: I love them all, and that is all I have to say. Each characters (main or side) is so effectively created that it almost feels like a movie is playing in your mind. You're there with them (in the good and the bad), and you feel their pain, their happiness, and so much more.
Overall: I loved this book. It broke me, healed me, and helped me to realize what I was missing in my life. This is supposed to be a 9 book series, and I can assure you, I will be reading all 9 books.
I loved the characters and their growth, struggles and weaknesses. They all felt very real and deeply flawed, while at the same time showing so much strength and faith.
Because of the historical setting of Scotland in the late 1300’s, the heavy religious hand felt natural and appropriate. It didn’t feel awkward or overdone in this time, culture and setting,
This is a small thing, but I loved that the Scottish and Irish accents were spelled out in the dialogue. For example, instead of “No” it was spelled “Nae” etc. This contributes to the atmosphere and transporting me to the time and its rarely done well.
The romance between Cara and Hector was exactly what I wanted from a book that’s inspired by Ruth and Boaz. Hands down, this is the best representation of that biblical story. “Tell me how to scale you walls and I’ll do it with my bare hands.”
I loved the constant theme of repentance and redemption in this book. I also greatly appreciated the care taken with past trauma and how beautifully it was handled. “I want you to fight like fury. You can do this, Cora. Fight for yourself.”
THOUGHTS: I desperately wanted to give this five stars, but there were two things that kept it down.
A character who shall not be named deserved better. This main character had a beautiful backstory and when this character “dies” its quite honestly, deplorably bland and vague.
The main couple have many imperfect moments where one or both of them does or says the wrong thing and then they ultimately come back together and become stronger from it. I appreciated this, but the last time it happened felt very repetitious and didn’t show me that Hector had learned from his past mistakes. AND this came after he learned her harrowing past. We don’t get to see him in a difficult situation with her, where he doesn’t lose his temper and eventually must grovel and ask for forgiveness.
OVERALL: A wonderful debut novel and I’d absolutely recommend it to all Chistian Fiction readers.
The faith was strong and solid throughout the entire story. Cara and Hector both had strong faith but it was definitely tested many times throughout the trials they faced.
Both characters were flawed and likable and from their first meeting you can’t help but root for their happily ever after.
I loved the inspiration from Ruth and Boaz and how Margaret was such a strong character in the story as Cara’s support.
Medieval Scotland isn’t a destination I typically travel while on my fictional vacations but this book definitely piqued my interest and I can NOT wait to read what else Ashley Worrell has in store for this place!
I'm not sure how to put into words how much I loved this book. I knew I wanted to read it as soon as I found out it was a Christian book set in Medieval Scotland and it didn't disappoint!
The faith is rich and woven throughout each page. The grief, the pain, and the redemption are so real and done so well (I may have cried a few times). I loved the side characters and the plot. And I adored Hector and Cara so much. They each had their strengths and weaknesses that made them so realistic. Neither was perfect. I loved how they constantly brought one another back to the foot of the cross. Ms. Worrell just became a new favorite author and I am so excited for the rest of this series.
This was a story full of redemption and faith. I loved that the characters were not perfect people. That being said, there were definitely times where I wanted to whack the mmc over the head. I don’t think I’ve read a more Scottish book than this, it is full of Scottish brogue. It was also difficult to track who was who in the book. I didn’t think that character introductions were done very well and it was confusing when they were called different names throughout the story. I did love the character growth and was surprised by Leo. My favorite part was when the mmc was boasting about what a man he is.
This beautiful and tragic yet triumphant story brought about a whirlwind of emotions in me, and a healing I didn’t realize I needed until I read this book.
Cara’s mother in law, Margaret, decides to return home to the Scottish Isles after the unexpected death of her son, and Cara devotedly returns with her.
Upon their arrival, Cara meets a troubled yet kind man, and shares many vulnerable and tragic moments with him, all the while not realizing that he is Hector, the chieftain of Margaret’s clan, the MacLeans. Cara and Hector seek God’s wisdom in answering the call they feel to be together, as the Scottish Isles are in the midst of planning a counterattack against the deadly forces of the Wolf of Badenoch.
I personally and deeply felt both Cara’s and Hector’s suffering from the memories of the past that haunt them both. The aspects of faith and allowing God to pour into their hearts, especially in the times of sorrow, pain, and trouble, was so uplifting and refreshing to see.
My heart will be forever changed after reading this story. And I highly recommend this story to anyone who wants a faith-filled, yet real, poignant tale of God’s love, the power of forgiveness for oneself and others, and overcoming tragedy. I hope this story speaks to you as much as it did for me!
“The only thing I want is to be near you. I cannae stop this longing in my heart for you, Cara.”
Radiance of the Moon is another book that would have never been on my radar had it not been for amazing bookstagrammers doing their thing. When I saw posts start floating around for its release, I was immediately intrigued. And I was blown away by the depth and beauty that Ashley gave us on every single page.
Radiance of the Moon is a story of hope and healing, faith and forgiveness, and of finding one’s way and worth after a season sorrow and pain.
Hector and Cara are two broken souls, immediately drawn to one another. Both are haunted by their pasts. Both carry emotional and physical scars. Their paths cross and their hearts align, but adversity and prejudices are determined to tear them apart.
Hector is the alpha of all alphas. His fierce protectiveness is pure James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser. He would move heaven and earth and destroy any and all in his path to be at Cara’s side.
This historical Christian Scottish romance is an outstanding debut that will have you swooning. There is suspense, mystery, danger, faith, and lots of romantic tension. It is also the first book in the series, so you will lots more fantastic reading to look forward to.
I listen to the audio and read along in KU. The audio is spectacular!
A woman with a traumatic past makes a Ruth-like expedition to a new clan with the mother of her now-deceased (and terrible human) husband. A man with battle-induced nightmares, flashbacks, and coping mechanisms is Laird over this clan. While both try to heal, they both fall into a relationship that was never supposed to be. Clean, Christian romance. Sweet, but still with sword-fighting, political moves, and a whole lot of 14th century Scottish words. Very well done!
I stayed up way too late finishing this awesome new book. A fictional Scottish love story filled with all kinds of drama and amazing characters. How I love redeemed Hector!
Make sure you pick this one up to read ! It literally kept me up way past my bedtime. I only put it down when it became too intense - and I needed a break from the intensity.
The Radiance of the Moon by Ashley worrell Book 1 of the Hebridean Shield Series
I first saw the title of the book from a friend and a few other people who also started to post about it. I became intrigued at the idea of a clean Scottish historical romance (my weakness I've discovered!)! And I jumped at the opportunity for an ARC read (my first!)! So thank you @byashleyworrell for the opportunity! ❤️
If you want to read about Scottish tribes, elements of faith, love, betrayl, and the complexities of different relationships (siblings, parents, husband/wife, neighbors, colleagues etc.), then this is a must!
If you want to delve deep into your ACTUAL faith in God, if you want to be spiritually uplifted, and if you want to be reminded of God's hand in EVERYTHING, then I suggest you snatch this book as soon as you can!
The turbulent pasts of Cara and Hector deeply affected their self-esteem and caused them to question their place amongst their people and almost make themselves smaller. It was really beautiful how their growth was realistically portrayed, through the muck of self-hatred through to other side of hope and thriving through healing and growth. I think that made me as a reader relate and therefore connect and love the characters. Sometimes we imagine that we would never find ourselves in a certain situation, but life is unpredictable, and through this realistic lens we can appreciate that this story could very well have happened!
The story starts out moderately paced as we get to know the characters and their history. Then the story progresses through their dilemmas and then, you're taken for quite a ride!!! I couldn't put down the book at that point and stayed up late to finish it! There's many twists, turns and surprises (all the way to the end), so hold on to your bonnets, it's a doozy!
This book was absolutely amazing 😍. I knew when I heard this book was a Christian historical Scottish romance/adventure I had to read it! I was not disappointed!! I just can’t even express how lovely this book was from beginning to end. The story, a retelling of Boaz and Ruth in medieval Scotland, was well written, fleshed out perfectly in amount of details, and especially as it reached the end was riveting and swashbuckling adventure. It was romantic and the romance was sweet and heart filled. I appreciated the author’s care to paint honest characters and honest feelings that I know will resonate with many readers and also that she didn’t write anything explicit but the characters feelings toward each other and desire to be together were also not totally swept under the rug. I loved how she dealt with the main characters trauma in a way that ultimately pointed them to Christ first as the true Savior and help and that they were also able to help each other heal. As someone who loves Scottish stories, dreams of going there, and whose family immigrated from there this novel really just intrigued me. I saw more are to come in this series and I absolutely cannot wait! My only slight struggle was I did listen to the audiobook and the narrator’s thick Scottish accent was a little bit tough to get used to because it was extra thick when voicing Hector and his voicing of female characters was sometimes a little bit much or trying too hard to speak lightly or softly. He did a good job making it authentic overall though. Overall 10/10 recommend. The story was a delight.
Ummmm, listen to my advice when I say, GET THIS BOOK ON AUDIO!!!!
This baby kept me awake at 4 am on a loonnnnggg drive home. The narrator did a fantastic job with the Scottish brogue and made Hector sound so incredibly swoony!
The story itself was lovely and engaging. I love that the author didn't shy away from the tough marriage topics that would naturally rear their head in a situation like this. She leaned into the romance heavily, which was PERFECT for me! 🤌
One of the best historical romances I've read all year!
I really enjoyed this book and the history aspect. It was hard to imagine being in Cara's shoes, since she has had a rough decade with being married to an abusive husband. This book doesn't shy away from difficult subjects but also isn't graphic about those triggers. I thought that the love story was a beautiful testament to how one should treat their sweetheart. The only thing that kind of annoyed me was the hot/cold signals when Hector is supposed to be courting another lady...
I’m almost embarrassed at how much I enjoyed this book… it was veeeerry romantic 😂 closed door though so nothing OTT. Loved the Gaelic words and “accents” used and feel like I’ve come away with a new appreciation for their culture and way of life. TW: domestic violence/abuse
Loved this book. Loved the characters. I did listen to it on audio and the narrator speaks in a Scottish accent which did take some getting used to. But clearly fit well as the book is set in Scotland.
This story is loosely based on the story of Ruth and Boaz. Which is a bible story about a widow who moves to Judah with her mother-in-law, Naomi, instead of remaining with her people. And she ends up under the protection of Boaz, a wealthy kinsman of her former husband. Don’t worry I said loosely, remember! I didn’t ruin the story at all for you. I won’t say more though because going into a story blind is one of the best parts.
There were a few sections I found my mind wandering a bit but Ashley did an amazing job at building the world on the Isles. The characters had excellent background stories and character growth (which I am a stickler for). So their stories flowed naturally and were very believable. Hector was a little intense with protection over Cara, which made me frustrated at times, but stick with it and I think you’ll enjoy the resolution.
Strong christian themes.
**Side note, I tried sooo hard not to let this effect how I overall felt about the book (I listened to it) but I absolutely did not jive well with the narrator. His voice was so nice until he did all the different character voices. It would have been ten times better if he had just straight read it. His voice was so relaxing but he even changed his voice for the MMC ... And it just made it not fun to listen to.
Plot: 4 stars Character development: 4 stars Romance: 4 stars Writing style: 4 stars . . . . . . Spoiler alerts: . . . . . . Trigger warnings: Alcoholism. Abuse from a parent. Death of a loved one (sibling, spouse). Spousal abuse. Infertility. Battle scenes. Kidnapping. Attempted rape (doesn’t get very far as she fights back so not explicit in that way). Romance is closed door, just kissing.
This Christian historical closed-door romance was heartbreaking with the trials but healing in the faith shown.
It walked the line between descriptive but not gory in a marvelous way.
It brought elements of one of my favorite Bible stories in as well.
I'm looking forward to the next book in this series and can't wait to reread this beautiful book that will likely live in my head forever.
