The Other Realm #0.5

Glimmer of Dragons

Rate this book
Every dog has its day. Mine has its own realm.

I can tell when you’re lying. Every. Single. Time.

As a private investigator, being a walking talking lie detector is a useful skill but let's face it, it’s not normal. You'd think it would make my job way too easy, but even with my weird skills, I still haven't been able to track down my parent's killers.

I'm hired to retrieve a lost heirloom, but I have no idea that the job is going to send me careening into a co-existing magical realm where my dog is a hell hound, and where there are werewolves and dragons and elves…

Some of whom will stop at nothing to hide their lies…

I am intrigued and hooked, I love it when a prequel does this to you and you're left wanting to move onto the first full book right away!

The mystery in this short novella has left me wanting to know more about the world where Jinx and her pet Gato live, it's not as ordinary as we might think that's for sure!

Bring on Glimmer of the Other - book 1!

I signed up to the authors Facebook group and news letter. I got this free as an audio book through book funnel (I think his was offered in the newsletter). This is a great introduction to the author and this series.

Glimmer of dragon is a short story, introducing Jessie/Jinx. We get hints of a magic world and the set up of the main story.

You don’t need to read this to enjoy the next book but it’s a good teaser for more.

Loved this cute introduction to the Glimmer series.
It was the perfect taste of things to come.
No romance in this one, more of a introduction to Jessica/Jinx and the world building of the series.
No need to read this for the series, but it does get referred to a couple times in the following books.

I really enjoyed reading this short prequel, and look forward to reading the full series.
You just get a glimpse of what is to come here. There is a dragon – the title gives a hint – but it is not where you’d expect it to be. The book is set firmly in the real world, London to be exact. And we are dealing with a human woman and her enormous dog – or are we?
Definitely recommended

My thanks to the author for a free copy, and to Danielle for recommending it

Heather G Harris does it again with this flawless novella. Glimmer of Dragons does a fantastic job of introducing the characters and laying the foundation for the series! The reader is instantly privileged to Jinx’s unique ability of being a human lie detector (a skill I’d love to have), which really comes in handy as she is a private detective. Each character has an uniquely endearing personality that easily captivates. Don’t underestimate this quick and easy read, be prepared to crave the next installment! Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Jessica, aka Jinx, is an interesting person. She's got some truth telling ability and a sense when things aren't what they seem. She works as a detective of sorts, getting the goods on cheating spouses, and she does some side jobs that aren't always above the law for a client. The same client who has now asked her to retrieve a very valuable vase he lost in a card game. Little does she know though, that the man he lost it to is a dragon, and everyone knows a dragon guards his hoard. 😁

Well, well. I was given this book. Talk about giving candy to a baby. I had no idea what I was going to read or that it would end up being so awesome. What an urban fantasy fan's dream come true. I loved everything about this book. Of course being a fan of animals, Gato was my favorite.
An average woman with a built-in lie detector is normally a PI. A strange client wants her to steal something he lost gambling. Having mild hallucinations during a very dangerous job doesn't stop her. But dragons?
I'm thrilled that this is a long series and I already have book 1. Now I'm going to get back to reading.

This is a prequel and as such can be read first. I don't believe it gives any major plot points away from the series.

I liked watching Jinx stumble around trying to gain her feet for a bit.

Happy Reading!

This was my first foray into the author and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

We meet Jinx who works as a PI and a security expert. But a new job turns out way more difficult than anticipated and opens a door into a new world almost literally. Jinx's thoughts and relationship with Gato were fun to hear about, as well as the mysterious circumstances that led to her parents demise.

While I felt the end was a bit rushed in her mental state and could have been handled more carefully, I still enjoyed this as a quick and fun read, and recommend it to lovers of urban fantasy with a slight dark tone

This prequel is fast paced and it sucks you in and the plot and world building is interesting and refreshing, but it ends on a major cliffhanger(!!!)
and as I really got intrigued and invested by the plot and the characters and want to know what happens next, I bought the omnibus and can't wait to dive into the world of The Other again and see where it goes from there!
This is a new-to-me author but if you like a strong FMC, some suspense, mystery and UF this is right up your alley! Highly recommend!

This book/series has been on my radar for a couple of years now and I took a mini plunge in to this world with this prequel Novella. Colour me intrigued. I like the small peek into the world that this book has given me. I want to find out what the magic system is in this world and about the cliffhanger at the end.

Remember that time Jinx found out she had been to the Other, but had her memory wiped??? This is that story! In this Novella, we start similarly enough to the actual first book, that I had to make sure I was reading the Novella. This was a fun little ride!

This book opens with a public scene with a wife screaming at her husband who was in the park with another woman. We see the conversation with phrases noted with true or false. The person listening in is Mrs. Sanderson's PI and she had sent the photos and videos as she closed her case. Unfortunately, Mrs. Sanderson recognized the area and join them her. Her PI has a unique ability to tell when someone is lying. The police were called, and we meet Detective Steve Marley an old school friend as he approaches the couple. After talking them down, he turns it over to his colleague and approaches the PI. It's from him we learn her name is Jinx.

She admits the argument being partly her fault for sending the photos when she did, but then goes on to ask him about her parent's murder. Since Steve has nothing new to impart, Jinx calls her dog Gato to her and leaves. She still feels the grief even though it's been five years. Feeling her grief Gato jumps up and licks her forehead, for a moment Jinx thinks the sky turned Lilac. She decides on a sausage sandwich with extra sausages for Gato, and a fancy slice of cake.

While she's eating, she gets a call from Lord Wilfred Samuel, he's got a gambling problem and sometimes gambles away something and then regrets it. Then calls Jinx to get it back for him. She charges him outrageous fees and it keeps her business afloat. They arrange a 4pm meeting at Rose's and Jinx heads home to freshen up. Her neighbor Mrs. Harding is the one she got the cake for; She watches Gato when Jinx is away on business and refused payment. Instead, Jinx looks for unique and wacky things or snacks to say thank you.

Wilf wants her to retrieve a vase, that he believes the new owner won't appreciate and is priceless. He gives her a time frame in which to grab the item, it's a narrow window and he also advises her to bring her hound. She's not sure how he knows about Gato her Great Dane, but she would bring him.

She rents a boat from an acquaintance and approaches the home from the river. The house's occupant is by the pool and Gatos lets out a low growl and pulls her backwards.

The retrieval of the vase and the aftermath is truly interesting especially since I've already read the first book in the series.

This was a fun introduction, and I really love Gato.

Meet Jinx, PI for Hire, owner of Sharp Security Services, making her way through life, one case at a time. With her big-lovable doggo, Gato, by her side, she seeks out cheaters, beaters, and the occasional tweakers. Life’s been fun so far, having picked herself up from her bootstraps after her parents’ tragic killing 5 years previous, she’s got her own business and a great reputation. But Jinx is a little bit different. She can tell if you’re lying. Not from body language tells, or by seeing you sweat, she just knows. Weird.

Everything changes though when one of her regular clients, Lord Wilfred - “Wilf” to his mates- asks her to do some *casual* B&E to get back a priceless vase he lost in a poker game, things start getting…different. With Gato by her side and one heck of a mission to accomplish, Jinx is about to find out how the Other side lives.

Dipping into a story mentioned in passing in one of the full series, “Glimmer of Dragons” the prequel novella fleshes out the story that had every “Otherling” wondering “Who WAS that old man??” (read/listen to the books, you’ll get it). It’s always a treat when one of your favorite authors expands on a mention that catches your eye, and “Gimmer of Dragons” is just that. Be forewarned though… It’s bound to leave you STARVING for more!

Funny, witty, entertaining, and unpredictable, this prequel to "The Other Realm" series is fantastic! Beautifully narrated, engaging, and something that simply cannot be put down/put on pause, this book is a must-listen for any Urban Fantasy reader! Enjoy!

I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.

"‘Hello, Jinx,’ a voice answered. ‘I’ve been expecting your call.’
I blinked. I hated this, hated not knowing. ‘What the hell is going on? Who are you and why does my dog want me to call you?’ That was a sentence I never thought I’d say.”

***** Review with spoilers *****

This short story does a great job of setting up the magic system, the worldbuilding, the different types of Supernaturals, and all the mystery surrounding Jinx and her family.

I loved how we only got to meet Jinx, Gato, Wilf, and this Leo guy. It kept everything centered on her and the mystery of her life. The book managed to be intriguing, a little funny, and full of potential for the series to come. It was surprising how, in so few pages, the author was able to create such an interesting and captivating protagonist. I can’t wait to find out why she doesn’t know about magic, the Others, or the truth about her parents. But more than that, I need to know why Leo erased her memory of those events—especially with the way he made it sound like he had done it before.

Also, I absolutely loved that her dog (sort of) had the name Gato. The fact that Gato is the Portuguese word for cat had me cracking up.

If this book is anything to go by, the rest of the series is going to be completely addicting—fast-paced, full of surprises, and keeping me on the edge of my seat.

This novella is intended to be read after book #1 but it is a bit out of time so if read first not end of the world. I LOVE THIS SERIES!

My! What a whirlwind it has been for me since. Within a month, I have read all of the published books to date (focus on Jinx - Glimmer/Court, Lucy -Wolf, Amber - Witch) more than once and now going through the entire book series again on Audio. WHAT A TREAT!

GLIMMER of ....the Other, Dragons, Hope, Christmas, Death, Deception
Defender, Protection, Guardian, Saviour of the PACK
Challenge, Betrayal, Revival of the COURT
Rune, Hex, Coven of the WITCH (so far)

I voraciously read every last one of them.

When I listened to the audio, it added another layer to the story because even though I KNOW it takes place in the UK some of the characters didn't sound like it in my head. Once I heard (say Inspector Stone), I had an ah-ha moment.

Alyse Gibbs (Narrator) is amazing. She does such a great job of bringing the story to life, capturing the essence of the characters, and the feeling of the moment. Because of her, I was able to better understand what was meant by the different accents.

Even if you are not fond of audiobooks, I would strongly encourage you to read the book (as your preference) and then check the audio out from the library. You can thank me later. :)

Basically, if you have already read book 2 of this series, don't waste your time.

You get a 'recap' of these events in Book 2 that is so thorough that I genuinely felt like this was a waste of my time. But I decided to finish the whole thing in case something new or interesting happened. It didn't. Maybe you'll like it if you read it before book 2. Otherwise, skip it.

Also, it irritated me that the author seemed to be shoehorning later story references into this. Things that are going to happen. Using the word "glimmer" in a story that the named dagger doesn't exist in, in an awkward sentence just to get it in there... Plus overdone foreshadowing really. It felt like the author had a list of things from later in the series that they wanted to make reference to, and they just stuck them in here wherever they could. Willy nilly.

Since I only recently started reviewing books online, I decided it was only fair to go back and reread and post on 5 star books that I've read previously. This series is one of those.

Jinx is a PI that can tell when someone is lying. She gets pulled into a hidden magical world, only to discover she should have always been there. She gets tangled up with witches, vampires, and dragons, to name a few. Her dog turns out to be a hellhound. So much fun!

After this series, I went on to read every other one in this world (Do read in order- they are better that way), and all of them are 5 star. Her world building and character development are exceptional, and the lively banter makers her books just plain fun to read, even when they are delving into deeply emotional issues.

Heather is a definite MUST READ author.

Love the Other

What a tremendous series. I've now read the entire Glimmer series up to Revival in the court. I find I need more of Jinxs story. Please don't let it end with Revival. I'm not ready to let the characters go, even if they are supporting characters in Amber's series and Lucy's series. Jinx, Stone, Emory, Nate, Hes, Shirdall, and Bastion have my heart, and I absolutely need to know more. There are a lot of loose ends. Perhaps intentional for separate series? Regardless, this is a 10/10 written in UK English. Very well, might I add. The world building is superb, and you won't find yourself lost or floundering. I read Amber's series first, which led me Jinx, and now I'm onto Lucy. I recommend reading Glimmer first.

This is the prequel to Harris’s world of the Other series and tells the tale of Jinx’s theft of a gambled-away heirloom and the series’s first glimpse into the magical realm Jinx co-inhabits. Jinx learns a great deal about the mystery surrounding her parents’ murders and the world of the Other but, in keeping with the rest of the series, those experiences are wiped from her mind. Still, the reader knows, and that is clearly the goal. The prequel is good way to answer some of the questions that arise later in the series. Light read, as are all of the Harris novels or novellas I’ve read to date.

!!!!!

I've had the ebook for this for months and finally picked it up despite having been wildly intrigued when I first got it. I am so into this world and its only been 50 pages of a prequel, so how embarrassing for me 😂 I could've read it much sooner.

But seriously, I want to dive immediately into Glimmer of the Other and you know what? I have it, so I am gonna do just that.

Harris' writing gives me the feeling that all my fav fantasy stories do. It's fun, it's engaging, and it gives a really good visual representation in my funny little brain. That's all I ask; let the movies in my head commence as we embark into the Other Realm.
