I knew I wanted my kids to have different values than I did growing up, but I didn't begin to understand the particular values I was transferring to my children until I came across Marilyn Howshall and read her book. Her ministry pointed me in the right direction to change the trajectory of our family.

I remember early on in my connection with Marilyn some teaching on the difference between general and particular sin. I have never heard sin talked about like that. I had only heard about general sins talked about. I remember being in church and when the pastor talked about sin (in the general sense), I "felt" off. To my understanding at the time, I couldn't think of any sin and yet I remember not feeling at ease with that thought and I had thoughts like "I am sure I must sin still." I remember feeling like I was hearing the answers to the cries of my heart and finally had something to address in myself and in my family, a beginning answer to the disturbedness in my soul.


You see, I remember spending time in the Christian bookstore as a young mamma searching for answers, knowing I needed help with my family relationships, particularly with raising my sweet babies to love God and each other. I read many books on parenting, attempted to apply some nuggets and ideas, and found myself in a cycle of trying on new things over and over and feeling frustrated. When I was introduced to Marilyn’s ministry, the truths I heard spoke to my heart. Just like in the medical world, if we only treat the symptoms and not the root cause, we don’t actually get better. I could feel that what I was hearing and reading was what my soul needed for lasting real heart-level change that would impact the trajectory of my family. Empowered explains things that I sensed in my spirit but didn’t know how to articulate or what to do with. Marilyn’s writing points us “to start with ourselves” and toward a two-way relationship with the Lord, letting Him have input in our lives, essentially parenting us. That wasn’t something I was familiar with and I had no idea what it meant to be parented by the Lord, personally. I did “all the right” Christian things that I knew to do, but I wouldn’t have said that the Lord was personally active in my life. When people talked about hearing from the Lord, that wasn’t something I related with or could say happened in my life. For me, Marilyn opened up a whole new journey of getting to know the Lord and letting Him have His way in me. Marilyn gives 8 challenging ideas in Empowered that were not common thought in my church background and experiences. Those challenging ideas shifted my life and my relationships and pointed me and my family on a new trajectory. This book has been the most refreshingly honest conversation on why cradle Christians struggle to live up to the biblical standards they were raised to believe in and expected to model to the world.

The author takes a very gentle approach to hard truth and seems to understand our need for loving mentorship; opposed to the harsh standards imposed on us since we were children. God is doing something very good today and this book is helping me to realize that He has not given up on me or any of His people. He will finish what He started in each of us! Praise be to Jesus! His fields are ripe for harvest!
