'Frances Bellerby is a haunting writer because she herself was haunted by what she had suffered and seen and sought to understand. Some of her stories are more directly autobiographical than others; almost all are shaped to objectify the original personal experiences giving rise to them, and all are, like her poems, part of her search for understanding, and charged with its peculiar intensity. The stories do, however, show a kind of insight and knowledge which one would not suspect from the poems alone' - Jeremy Hooker.
