A Touch of Destiny follows our FMC, Luz - a plus sized Puerto Rican woman, who finds herself transported back to the 1680s…a time when piracy, colonization, enslavement, and debauchery was commonplace.⁣

I’ll be honest, I went into this story thinking that it would be a lighthearted pirate fantasy filled with typical pirate adventures. Instead, I found myself full of rage as I read the horrors that Luz was forced to endure and the realization of just how white washed history is. ⁣

I absolutely loved how Velazquez dives into the incredibly rich history of the Caribbean people while also providing an unflinching into the horrors that were inflicted upon both the indigenous peoples and those enslaved from the African Slave Trade. ⁣

I also loved Hector as misfit crew. They do everything in their power to fight for others like them (Black and brown folks), and to turn the tides on the colonizers.⁣

Oh, there’s also some really incredible Siren magic! I don’t want to give anything away, but it’s definitely a large part of the story. ⁣

Thank you to the author and Book of Matches Media for providing a review copy. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.

Pirates?? Time travel?? Say less.

FEMALE pirates?? I already said say less.

The first three sentences of this book?? I ALREADY SAID SAY LESS!!

I was literally hooked from the first 2 paragraphs, and really enjoyed this!! I loved the historical context, the cultural context, and the Spanish intertwined throughout the book!

If a time travel pirate story where everything kicks off because men are, well, men, sounds up your alley—this is your book!!

First let me just start by saying Velazquez did the damn thing with the Caribbean/ Taino representation! Made my Latina heart happy and it’s refreshing in the fantasy genre! Don’t let this read fall under your radar, pick it up!! 🥲

You follow Luz Narváez who is a Puerto Rican actress and also a plus size girlie who can parkour her way out of anything! When Luz’s real life became overwhelming she finds herself transported back in time to the 1600s, clueless to the fact that she time traveled, was chased by an almost replica of her ex and while on the run is kidnapped by a pirate, Hector. That was a hell of a welcoming committee 😅 This actually made me excited because I haven’t read a book yet with pirates and it was pretty cool to see how the author painted the picture of the pirate life. I ate up the enemies to lovers between Luz and Hector, the tension and back and forth bickering was everything! Hector was swoon worthy af!!

The attention to detail and the history that was woven into this read was remarkable and you can tell that Velazquez put a lot of research time and love into this story and was unapologetic about it! You get fun banter but also light shed on the serious issues that happened during that time period, which is still very relevant in real time! You also get fun & lovable side characters, tension, lots of adventures, time travel, sirens, pirates, seers. There were so many swoony and funny moments that I was smiling for most of this read! Definitely recommend and it does end on a cliffhanger!! 🙂

Thank you to the author for providing an e-ARC for an honest review!! ❤️

The tropes and plot of this book was everything I wanted! Pirates, a Caribbean setting, a story steeped in culture, and a Puerto Rican, plus size FMC. I was beyond excited to read this.

I loved the historical elements woven throughout the story. The author also did an amazing job with the 17th century setting, I truly could imagine the ships and coastal towns as I was reading.

Given the time and the setting, the author did not hold back. Racism, misogyny, erasure and genocide, death and torture. It's all here.

So why the lower rating?

Luz, our FMC, was extremely frustrating. Right from the beginning I had a hard time sympathizing with her. I felt her character was inconsistent. At one point she thought no one would miss her if she was gone and then the next she is asking why no one is looking for her.

The pirates dialect and slang was heavy with words like "ye" and "savvy" being used often. However, there were times when modern phrases were used by the pirates that didn't make sense for them, such as "too soon?" or "for real this time".

And during a battle between 2 ships, there is no way people can swing from one ship to another if the ships are "miles apart".

Now, I don't know if an editor or beta readers were used. I think another set of eyes would have caught the above and maybe could've shortened the book by at least a hundred pages.

I really REALLY thought I was going to love this book and I'm sad it didn't hit for me. I am definitely in the minority and I know there are readers out there that will devour this story! It has all the makings of an epic fantasy with a sloooooow burn romance.

Read this if you like: time travel (think Outlander), Caribbean setting and historical elements and talks indigenous people and cultures, slow burn romance, hate to love, close proximity, pirates, battles and sword fights, found family

The ultimate fantasy story

Pirates of the Caribbean and Outlander meet and deliver an untold side of history, a side of history we need to hear of. Unfiltered, undiluted, unwhitewashed.

There's time travel, pirates, sirens, mermaids, a diverse cast, a plus size FMC, Taino/Native/Black rep. There's a clear call out to colonizers and to societal issues WOC, especially black womxn and black afrolatine womxn face still.
There's a ship battle in the middle of the sea and just so much awesomeness.

There's female rage, and then there is the pure soul deep rage that has been buidling and oppressed for generations.

Halfway through reading the KUversion, I went ahead and bought both the ebook and physical book.

The Caribbean with pirates, sirens, a seer set in a tumultuous time period made it more interesting with the added element of time travel! I enjoyed reading more about the fun times of piracy.

I was so sure I would love it so much but there were a few letdowns. I oscillated between two stars and three stars and eventually landed on three.

I loved the way pirates were written about. It felt very original. I also enjoyed reading about the way the author has handled the discrimination issues and the historical context with colonisation and the horrors humans had to endure and still do nowadays. The author has penned the tale of suffering beautifully and passionately.

I had a hard time understanding how Luz did not freak out when she was surrounded by the people she had idolised all her life. I understand needing some time to accept the fact that she time traveled, but she has spent her whole life reading about these characters and yet did not have any reaction about being around them.

It also felt odd that she could not connect the dots to figure out a person’s identity till their full name was spoken together. Hearing the last name alone did not jog her memory? Again, she’s spent years reading about all these characters.

She will decide to act like she’s being compliant and wait for a way of escape. One paragraph later, she’s running away with no plans made. This happened several times and seriously made me question her decision making process.

The ending was not what I expected and I was pleasantly surprised by it. Thank you to the author and BOMM for sending me the ARC to review.

Why did it have to be so GOOD!?

And it gave me a place for my hurt and rage at the harm historical and modern colonialism has done to countless people, cultures, and countries around the world.

Beautiful, action-filled, provocative, and I'm ready for more!

You are the queen amongst queens. I would let you rule me without hesitation.

A Touch of Destiny by Nicole Velazquez is the story of a woman who travels back in time to the late 1600s when people were taken as slaves, countries were colonized and East India Company was wreaking havoc. This book made me stop and Google history a few times, and it was all done so well. A Touch of Destiny is a story enriched with facts combined with fiction in the best way. It has diverse representation and people of colour as the cast of both the MC and the side characters.

The world-building is amazing; Nicole Velazquez has managed to capture the essence of the world of piracy and Caribbean folklore beautifully. There is so much to learn from our history and books (yes even fiction) teach us so more.

I am being intentionally vague about the story because I think the best way to enjoy this is going in blind with very little knowledge. There are so many plot twists, and so many emotional scenes and each one of them will make you angry for the injustice people have gone through. In the tough times we are living in today, it’s more than necessary to educate yourself not just about the ongoing atrocities but other cultures as well so that we can do better in the future.

In terms of romance, this book won’t offer much, there are certainly some confessions and teasing for some romance in the future but that doesn’t take away anything from how beautiful and empowering Luz’s story is.

The last chapter was something and I am not sure how to process that or whatever comes next.

With every good thing about this story, some things didn’t work for me and most of them were around our FMC, Luz.

She was a little too self-centered and that started to get on my nerves, pirates have a bond that keeps them close together, no one finds family better than pirates and Luz needs to understand how to be a team player.

Thank you to Book of Matches Media for the eARC

I had the pleasure of ARC reading this debut by Nicole Velazquez, and I want to say that I was WOW’ed right off the bat! Velazquez’ writing style is nothing short of beautiful, masterful, and descriptive while maintaining an excellent pace to keep the story moving. There was never a moment where I wasn’t dying to know what would come next.

Now the story itself, we follow Luz, a young Puerto Rican woman sent back in time to figure out her place in an ancient prophecy that could change the course of history. Taken by pirates and forced to survive on the seas, she begins to unravel pieces of her heritage while trapped in a time when colonization and racism was dominant on the seas.

As a Puerto Rican woman, I loved being able to identify with the character, especially since I grew up in the states and did not have as strong of a connection as I would have liked with the island. Seeing things through Luz’ eyes—her experiences, her past memories, and the way she interpreted the things happening to her, helped me feel like I was connecting to the raices of my own heritage. It was impossible not to root for her the whole time, because she faced so much and yet stood so strong, even when I was sure she would break. And the ending…whew! Just brace yourself!

While there was certainly a small romance subplot, I do wish there had been just a touch more romance, but that’s simply personal preference in what I like to read. The romance was done very well and woven throughout the story in a way that kept it relevant without overshadowing the main plot, and it was definitely a slow burn, which is always the best kind of romance in my opinion!

Overall, if you’re looking for a historical fantasy with an incredibly diverse cast of characters, a fast-paced story with mystery and magic prophecies mixed with real lore and legend, and a strong FMC who knows very clearly what she stands for, you’ll love A Touch of Destiny!

Who would have thought that a historical romance would be not only be my first five star read of the year, my first official full five star rating!

AToD is a historical fantasy where Luz finds herself time traveling to the late 1600s and she has to fight to survive. She runs into Héctor, a sarcastic pirate who takes a keen interest in her grandmother's necklace. Together they escape the danger chasing them for her to then be held captive by him. If I go any further into the story there will be too many spoilers🤭

I cannot explain how much I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am not a historical romance girly whatsoever but this book.. THIS BOOK!! With the pirates, the sirens, the Seer, the banter, freaking PEDRO CÓRDOVA😍🥵💘 I'm sorry but Héctor who??😅

I cannot get over this book. Like I legit spent 8 hours NO LIE fighting myself at work on why this book should deserve only 4.5 stars. There is always room for improvement but when it comes to this book, I couldn't sleep peacefully at night if I dare give it anything lower than a 5/5 stars.

But I think something EVERYONE needs to consider before reading this though are the trigger warnings.. you might read them and think "Oh yeah that's nothin I can handle it" nope. Miss ma'am done took these trigger warning and USED THEM! There are a lot of heavy scenes and graphic scenes even. It definitely isn't for the faint of heart. However, if you feel you're able to read this book and come out (partially because ain't no one comin out completely fine) unscathed, definitely give this new author some love! This is her debut book and although it doesn't feel like it's her first, you can tell just how much time and work and love she put on these pages. SHE IS NOT TO BE SLEPT ON👏🏻👏🏻

Super biased review ahead...

This is the thrilling adventure filled with lovable characters and high stakes you don't want to miss!

Starting off with the main character Luz Narváez, we are introduced to her unfulfilling life as an actress dating Hollywood heartthrob Oliver Bennett. Immediately, we can tell Luz is sick of her life and is trying hard to change it, except destiny has other plans. Things take a turn when Luz finds herself time traveling to the 1600s where piracy is at an all time high, and now there are multiple people chasing after her and her supposed "power."

At its core, this book is about finally tapping into your own power and letting it unleash into the world. It was amazing to see how Luz transformed from a people pleaser to a woman unafraid to wreak havoc.

Of course, it was also amazing to get to know this incredible ensemble of characters—Hector, James, Pedro, Lydia, Sullivan, Art, Cyrus, and more! Seeing them interact on the page was one of my favorite things about this story, and how this might've looked like in the 1600s and how that might've clashed or mixed with Luz and how modern she is in comparison.

The plot is also a wild ride from start to finish. I don't think there's ever a moment where things slow down. There is twist after twist, and scenes that will have your heart pounding all the way through. You won't want to put it down.

This book is unapologetic and loud, and I'm just so glad I was able to read a story like this as a Puerto Rican. I definitely can't wait to see where this series goes next!

I want to start by saying a big thank you to the author for giving me an early copy in exchange for an honest review!

A Touch of Destiny" by Nicole Velazquez is an incredible fantasy debut. It's a captivating blend of Caribbean history, time travel, and folklore. The story kicks off with a series of unfortunate events, and our MC, Luz, finds herself accidentally transported back to the 1680s, a time marked by piracy, colonization, and wild debauchery. The narrative follows Luz as she grapples with her new reality and seeks to uncover the reason behind her time-travel journey.

What struck me the most was the way the author delved into the issues of discrimination faced by people of color and the historical context of colonization. Often, time travel stories skim over these crucial aspects, but here, they are woven seamlessly into the plot. The addition of siren lore and their role in the story added an intriguing layer to the narrative. The characters in the book are well-developed and multi-dimensional, making them relatable and engaging. And let's talk about the slow-burn romance in the story – it was nothing short of perfection. I am eager as well as a tiny bit scared to see how the romance goes because of the hints the author dropped in the story. I didn't realize this was part of a trilogy as the book ended with a shocking twist, and now I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment.

This book is absolutely stellar. Nicole Velazquez was born to write. This is her debut novel and she’s got a permanent spot on my Auto-Buy list. Having the opportunity to ARC read this has been an absolute honor. This book is a beautiful homage to the author’s homeland, while also painting a brutally honest picture of the realities her home and its people have faced, all wrapped up in a swashbuckling mystical pirate fantasy adventure that had me deep in its grasp.

This book phenomenally has:
* A plus-size Latina protagonist
* An entire cast of diversity from a badass Irish female pirate to every single shade within the BIPOC community
* Excellently written female rage
* History lessons on the harm colonialism has caused the Caribbean nations

This beautiful Puerto Rican author does not, in any shape or form, hold back. She has weaved her country’s history intricately with this vibrant fantasy with unbridled passion. The intense scenes are brutally so. The slow burn is sizzling and delicious. The banter is world-class. The plot-reveals are breath taking. The action is heart pounding.

If you love pirates, sirens, seers, time travel, and historical fantasy written by an exquisitely talented author, you HAVE to pick up this title!

Okay let me start off by saying that this book had a really good plot going for it i’ll give it that. The characters on the other hand were absolutely fantastic. I loved every character in this book that i even CRIED when my favorite ones died. This book stayed with me for hours after i would put it down.

The main character was sometimes frustrating to read about because of her inconsistency of her plans but despite it all it was interesting to read in her POV.

I loved Hector and the enemies to lovers dynamic him and Luz had.

I’ve read about despicable characters before but omg Johan truly is one of the most HORRENDOUS EVIL MEN i’ve ever had the displeasure of reading about. Nothing about him is redeemable in the slightest. I wish him a very much DIE.

This part is for the author because HOW DARE YOU KILL PEDRO!??? HE WAS MY FAVORITE AND YOU JUST KILLED HIM?? 😭 Bro why??

Reading the prolonged torture scene that Luz endured at the hands of Johann was so graphic that usually that doesn’t bother me but off was it rough to read.

I must say tho this books has a few inconsistency in the writing. I don’t know if it wasn’t proofread but it certainly needed it but overall i let it go because the book was entertaining.

RIP to my homies that died 🫡

ARC Review

⭐️: 4.75

Tropes:
1. Traveling through time 🕰️
2. Pirates 🏴‍☠️
3. Sirens 🧜🏼‍♀️
4. Black/Taíno representation
5. Enemies to lovers (kinda)
6. “Touch her and you’ll die”

First of all, thank you for this opportunity of having an ARC 🥹

✍🏼 The writing on this book is quite easy to get into.

👀 It contains descriptions of a kidnapping, some torture and other things. So, beware of the triggers

🏴‍☠️ I loved the whole “pirates/sirens/traveling through time” thing. This is my new obsession 😍

🧜🏼‍♀️ The sirens in this book did NOT disappoint at ALL!! Like OMFG!! I just loved them.

🏹 And Héctor Villanueva?? Like, damn, boy. I need a pirate of my own. He is definitely the standard.

👩🏾‍🦱 Luz Narváez had her moments where I wanted to slap her but then I was rooting for her. I love her development through out the book. One strong Latina protagonist 💪🏼

✖️ Things I didn’t like: It does have gramatical errors, but I still loved it. And I can’t wait for Book 2 🖤

Favorite quote: “If I had lost you, I do not know what would have become of me. You are my world. My life. My love… or d'nanichi."

PS. This book comes out on November 7th, so be on the lookout 👀

🏴‍☠️ ⛵️💫 ARC REVIEW 💫⛵️🏴‍☠️

A Touch of Destiny is definitely a book that is worth reading. The premise of this book is different than a lot of typical fantasy books, and the history is rich, raw, and consuming.

The majority of this book takes place in the historic Caribbean and doesn’t skimp over the atrocities that occurred, which I appreciated. That being said, if you are going to read this book you need to make sure you are in the right headspace for it. There are parts of this book that were tough to read, but they were a necessary part of the journey that the main character went on.

The FMC, Luz, was fantastic. She starts out as a strong woman, but continues to grow as the book develops. The side characters held a special place in my heart as well and I loved every single one of them. I thought I had an idea of how the ending was going to go, and I was partially right but with a curveball that surprised me! Maybe there is a book 2 coming? Hopefully, because I’ll definitely be reading it!

SUUUUPER BIASED REVIEW but I absolutely had a blast with this book! This was my most anticipated book and I was immediately in it when I started reading. I fell in love with the way Velazquez's world-building and how immersive it was. The mix of pirate, Taino, and Caribbean history was brought to life by Velazquez and you can tell how much time and love she put into it.

The characters were my favorite and I was so invested in them. I loved the crew of the Fury! They were distinct and my heart shattered when anything bad happened to them (and they were GOING through it). Luz is a badass and seeing her journey from beginning to end was satisfying. Speaking of ending, HOW DARE YOU!

Again, I'm biased but you're telling me that I wouldn't love a book about a plus-sized Puerto Rican with ADHD when I'm all those things too? It's so rare to read that kind of representation and seeing someone like her full-on center and loved is amazing.

I can't wait for the next book!

I had the distinct pleasure of reading an early copy of this book, and can I just say... WOW!!! This was the perfect blend of history and adventure. Luz was really a character you could root for! And the slow burn romance drove me absolutely CRAZY in a good way. :) (I yelled at the book more than once. lol.)

The cast of characters were complex, diverse, and lovable. A few of my favorites were Hector and James. I ADORE THEM! And the adventure this book took me on was WILD. I could imagine myself on the high seas, fighting alongside Luz as she went from one heart-pounding situation to another.

The story vibes are very much Pirates of the Caribbean meets Outlander. I definitely recommend reading this if you're a fan of enemies-to-lovers, pirates, time travel, and nail-biting scrapes with death.

Riveting and Amazing!!!

This is the story of Luz, a Puerto Rican woman who is thrust into a world of violence, secrets, and magic. If you are Puerto Rican, this book will speak to your soul. It perfectly embodies the struggle we feel of never being enough and therefore labeled as too much by anyone that doesn't bother to look beyond our hips or skin color. The true beauty of it is in its portrayal of a lot of our inner monologue. How do we merge the parts of our histories that we can't stand, with the parts of our history that were stolen or misconstrued, and the parts of our histories that we adore? And what do we do when the parts of our history that we adore turn out to be the ones that bring us pain? I don't know. But I, for one, cannot wait to find out in this authors next installment. Brava!

Fair warning, this is a biased review.

A Touch of Destiny follows Luz Narvaez, a 24 year old Puerto Rican woman, who happens to be an actress. After her world comes crumbling down she is magically transported to the golden age of piracy. In this new environment, Luz must decide whether she wants to follow her destiny or not.

Nicole Velazquez put a lot of love into her story. Each character was methodically thought out, she made sure to educate herself on her own Taino heritage to incorporate those aspects of her culture into the story and, to honor those who came before.

I can say with full faith that “A Touch of Destiny” is a love letter to the Caribbean. From the characters, to the settings, and the message behind her book. It was all created with love and done beautifully.

I was sold at time traveling and pirates! Luz is our plus size Puerto Rican actress that travels back in time to join Caribbean pirates. There's fun and banter but also serious topics such as colonization and racism. I went in expecting a fun YA adventure and it is but this is so much more. It was interesting to learn more about Puerto Rico's rich history and how it's been white washed.

I love how pirates feel like a found family! I enjoyed reading about this pirate crew! My problem is with Luz - I enjoyed her character and her growth but I also found her self centered and frustrating to follow her choices. She'd say one thing then do the opposite. Still a fun and interesting read! Thank you Nicole and BOMM for my e-arc!!

Thank you Good Girls PR and Nicole Velasquez for a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

OK first of all, TAINO REP IN THA HOUSE!!! Second, Talk about a plus size FMC who travels through time with her magical powers to discover she’s a SIREN ( and a deathly one ) We got Pirates, a Seer, Time travel, Sirens, Taino rep with the backdrop of colonialism in the 1800s and the cruel reality our people had to endure under the Spaniards hand.

it was an adventurous ride that I did not want to end and when it did I was left shocked…literally staring at the wall…………….talk about a strong cliffhanger 🥴

FREAKING AMAZING

Listen, as soon as I heard this was an Outlander meets the pirates of the Caribbean fantasy with a plus sized Puerto Rican FMC I was SOLD. Throw in the Taíno culture, BIPOC characters, and Spanish you bet I gobbled it up. I legit read this in two days, loosing much needed hours of sleep (worth it of course) just to finish. This book had an amazing plot, characters with depth, and a touch of romance to keep me intrigued. I absolutely cannot wait to read the next book in the series. Thank you to Nicole for bringing my culture & all its legends with such a fun adventure woven in to fruition.

Honestly, the references and description hooked me from the start. Having this encompass so many characters with complex motivations, appearances, backgrounds - that makes the references just some sprinkles on top. There were grammatical and copy-editing errors throughout, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the book and being on the edge of my seat for that cliff-hanger ending. I need to know when the next book is coming out!

NOTE: Thanks to the author for an ARC!!

I forget how this book made it into the periphery of my vision, but the fact that there was a plus size Latina protagonist in a pirate story with time travelling... MY EYES SWOONED and suddenly I needed to know more!

And so, getting an ARC of this book has been a delight. I've chosen to take my time with this one because the prose is so beautiful and thought-provoking that honestly has me wrapped in such a bubble I am in LOVE. We need more stories with Latinas leading the YA genre instead of your typical white girl because those stories end up taking a good chunk of the spotlight and while it's not super bad, it is still pretty bad because then YA heroines of color don't get as much recognition. We need more awareness in the indie publication world because there are also so many hidden gems out there that honestly, take my breath away even more than the usual popular books we see that get promoted by booktok or by book publishing outlets.

So, here we go.

Short Summary: A young actress accidentally ends up travelling back in time and gets caught in a world of pirates, danger, and an adventure beyond her wildest dreams.

Long Summary: For centuries, ominous whispers foretold the arrival of a sinister omen of ruin who will bring the end of times. This conqueror will rise and change the tides, no matter the consequences.

After a botched marriage proposal and a rejection from her dream job, actress Luz Narváez García is left with a deep desire to disappear from the public eye. Her wish comes true when an unknown magical force transports her back to the 1680's - a time where piracy, colonization, and debauchery were commonplace.

Lost in time, Luz finds herself surrounded by the ruthless waters of the Caribbean, where everything has a price. Between a lethal power hungry naval officer, riddled with deep desires of revenge, and a mysterious bloodthirsty pirate who steals her indispensable necklace and kidnaps her, she's thrust into a dangerous role in the treacherous politics of piracy.

Caught up in a web of danger and intrigue, Luz must use her wits and cunning to not only ensure her survival but to also outsmart those who seek a higher power only she is meant to wield... all while finding a way back home that doesn't alter the course of history catastrophically.

If that doesn't sell the book for you let me sell this one for you. It features a strong, admirable Puerto Rican heroine that you want to root for since the first page, a world that you can get lost into (and if you loved Pirates of the Caribbean, this book is GLORIOUS!) incredible banter that had me grinning, and a story that will definitely pull you in for the unique elements it has.

So, go read it.

This is the first book I read I that the author is Puerto Rican and has twisted some facts of the old Boriken and taínos in a fantastical way but also in a way that remains true to history.

I really loved the Taino representation and Caribbean culture throughout the book! I loved how realistic our characters were and had genuine dialogue about colonization and racism. I felt that towards the end it became a little repetitive and there were several grammatical errors throughout the book that were sometimes distracting.

This book is a baby of Outlander and Pirates of Caribbean LOL. But seriously though the plot was phenomenal.

* Pirates / Sirens
* Time Travel
* Plus size Latina FMC
* Swoon worthy MMC
* Black/Taíno representation

Luz travels back in time and ends up in late 1600 Caribbean's, where pirates are at large. Running away from dangerous Johann Nau, she meets Hector who kidnap's her, takes back to his pirate ship and crew and then they travel to bring her to the powerful Seer. There Luz finds out who she really is and what she's destine to do.

I adore this book. I love the way Nicole wrote the pirates, they way she included a sirens (who are not what you expected to be). She brought Caribbean's folk and dived into the issues of discrimination faced by people of color and the historical context of colonization.

Characters were amazing! Loved Hector, Pedro, James, Sullivan, Lydia, Octavia they were written beautifully. Luz on the other hand I had trouble understanding at some points and acted like a whiny child. Like when Oliver proposed to her ... Girl if you ain't happy in a relationship just tell the guy! She was too focus on her self (me me me ) ... During her time in historical Caribbean's same some parts of her "acting" were just silly... Her getting mad at her loved ones, because they lied or did not tell her truth et, girl get over yourself. If I was at the place I would understand after explanation and I would not hold over them ... The end chapters were amazing and Luz was a badass! I hope she will continue evolve in next book.
