Maomao finds herself once more in the western capital. She tries to focus on her work—which isn’t made any easier when she’s paired with not just the quack doctor but the smart-mouthed young physician Tianyu. Meanwhile, Jinshi might be the Imperial younger brother, but the western capital has its own hierarchies, both obvious and hidden. He and the other visitors from the court will have to navigate these halls of power even more carefully than usual, lest they run afoul of enemies they don’t even know they have. Over it all looms the threat of the insect plague, which seems insurmountable—until one man claims to know how to counter the menace. His method is intimately connected to secrets buried deep in the region’s past.
It was really good! At the beginning when they were going on about farming I thought it would be boring but I actually got really into it. The part with the grasshopper plague freaked me out, if you're really scared of bugs you might struggle to read this one.
There wasn't much development between Maomao and Jinshi but that's alright I don't really mind. I liked the epilogue about Gyokuyou she is such an interesting character to me. Also Basen and Lishu are so ridiculously cute and shy but I'm glad it's moving slowly between them. The real MVP of this volume? Basen's duck. Basen getting a pet duck was not something I thought would happen but it did and I'm here for it.
I also feel bad for Lahan's Brother... poor guy. We'll find out his name someday 😭
I was reading this secretly during work , and I audibly gasped at the backstory of . Needless to say, I did get some side eyes from my colleagues but I was so flabbergasted and shocked. Natsu Hyuuga, I will be watching your career with great interest 🙂↕️
My new favorite character is Jofu the duck and if anybody eats it I will cry. I'm surprised I like this farming simulator arc so much, there were a few spots that dragged a bit (I think in the middle), but I really enjoyed the rest. Also, we got a cameo from one of my other favorites, now for spring to come for her <3.
Book 10 was satisfying! Chue is a good one hehe. The entire Ma family is full of distinct characters and I'm all here for the chaos lol. Rooting for Basen and his 'spring' too🥺. Basen is a duck mom, chue is a goat mom , kulumon is the owl's mom and the quack doctor is maomao's mom🤣 ( What really is Lahan's brother's name anyway?)
That moment when Jinshi asks if they could talk in private! <3 :D
Maomao spends time in the Western capital with the Wind tribes and a plague of insects. It was not uncommon to prepare and eat grasshoppers in creative ways. It also addresses the introduction of a wooden plow to tend the land and reduce pests.
This volume was sooo funny, ngl. Too many LOL parts.
Sooo many scenes of Maomao being Maomao:
“Well, I don’t know your name,” she pointed out.
“My name is—”
“That wasn’t an invitation.” She’d only just recently, and finally, remembered the quack doctor’s name. She didn’t need any more to learn.
“Listen to me! Let me tell you my name!”
Maomao, however, was in no mood to listen.”
(“That wasn’t an invitation” 💀🤣🤣 GIRL you are too funny.)
“There are no good plants anywhere around here!
Maomao was on the verge of suffering from a chronic lack of medicinal herbs, a condition made all the worse by the great variety of medicines she’d been able to encounter since becoming a medical assistant.
Drugs! I want to see some drugs...
Just the thought brought on a sudden episode, her breath growing ragged. There hadn’t even been any good medicine along the roadside on the way here.”
(PLEASEEE not Maomao having drug withdrawals)
“Man. I wish I could take some skin from his butt and stick it on this thing. She spared a glance at Jinshi’s haunches.
“You know, I can’t help thinking you seem to look as much at my back as my front during our exams lately,” Jinshi said.
“It’s your imagination, sir.”
(Maomao stays gaslighting people without an ounce of shame and I love for her that 🤣)

The "will they, won't they" is starting to wear on me. I kind of wish Jinshi would find someone else to obsess over because I honestly don't think Maomao would care (and I totally respect that!). Right now, the idea of them together gives square peg, round hole vibes.
What an interesting volume! Many info about agriculture and such, and then the plague- I can't imagine how terrible it would have been to live through one but the details here freaked me out.
Not much jinmao this time, but things have been said that might developpe other things in the next volume...
1) "In politics, however, to lose the initiative was to lose all. A leader had to stay ahead of what was happening in his country, and eliminate all possible sources of trouble. If he failed to do so, the blame would fall on him—and if he succeeded, so would the indifference, for people would simply assume it was his job."
2) It was Suiren who continued, with a smile. "He's been informed that you've known the Moon Prince for some time, since you were training in etiquette in his chambers. Put your mind at ease."
M: "Training in etiquette?"
S: "Yes. It's not untrue as such."
M: "I suppose not..."
The description, frankly, made Maomao feel a little ill. To "train in etiquette" by serving a man of elegance typically meant to prepare to be his wife.
"It's not untrue," Suiren reiterated, still smiling.
3) Rikuson: "Her last words to me were: When you most want to break down, that's when you must be most calm."
Such a crazy good mix of hilarious banter, learning way more than I ever needed to about specialist subjects, well-layered mysteries and intrigue, and the usual Mao Mao-ness, which was positively excellent the entire time. The cast of side characters truly hit their stride here, too. I feel like I always enjoy these volumes, but I Really Enjoyed this one. I don't want to say too much, it all unfolds so well - go read it yourself! Anyway, vol. 11 is already out so off I go~~~~~
Lots of politics and farming with some romance and ducks, 10/10
The last part was pretty dark and described in a way that gave me chills
I especially liked Basen (AND JOFUUUU I LOVE YOU JOFUUUUU), Chue, Lihaku and the only normal guy of the series Lahan's Brother (the name joke will never not be funny I'm so sorry)
ALSO WILL MAOMAO EVER STOP LOOKING AT JINSHI'S ASS??????
Ngl I thoroughly loved this one, all the plotlines were nice and we finally got some Maomao & Lakan content. Nice to see a group of characters outside of the rear palace again.
Either I can't read between the lines or Maomao doesn't express herself well and is unclear... I got spoiled something big from book 13, and this is book 10... HOW THE HELL ARE THEY GOING TO GET TO THAT IF THIS GIRL DOESN'T SHOW EVEN A MINIMUM OF AFFECTION TOWARDS JINSHI. I mean, if she does show it, it can be seen in the small details, but she hasn't openly said that she likes Master Jinshi, she still sees him differently. Anyway, leaving that aside, I did like their scenes in this book, but once again, Maomao runs away from every situation in which Jinshi wants to be with her, and that infuriates me.
- The whole grasshopper plot has me sick. I think I'm going to dream about them at this point. - Poor "Lahan's Brother"...maybe one day we will know how to call you - I don't know what to believe. Many people say Rikuson doesn't like Maomao, but for me, he does...or I don't know. I feel like he treats her well and lovingly, because that's who he is, and also because she's the daughter of his commander, whom he served. But with what he said to her, "𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭, 𝘔𝘢𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘰. 𝘋𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘴𝘬 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘨𝘦?" That's a bit too trusting, I'd say. (Jinshi won't like it if he finds out.) - Gyoku-ou, as long as I'm alive this man has a hater. - I find it very endearing to me how Jinshi cares for Maomao throughout the book. He doesn't take his eyes off her for a second 💀
okay. wow. i can see now why volume 9 focused a lot more on build-up because volume 10 is a lot more high-stakes. tianyu's pesky in an entertaining way. (miss) chue i've warmed to a lot. there is no more iconic duo than basen and jofu. not a lot of mystery-solving but a lot of classic problem-solving. give lahan's brother the opportunity to name himself !!!!
but wow somehow i just... love maomao a lot more in this volume. something about the way she was so desperate to alleviate the worst of the plague through her pesticides felt so.. raw. there's a lot less of maomao thinking that she thinks for herself. quite a bit less of her self-depreciating thoughts too but granted the events of this novel made it so that there was no space for her to think of those things in the first place? lots of sympathy from maomao toward jinshi in here too. she really feels for him. (and a lot toward him, which lol)
oh and man. those two chapters of the plague? deeply harrowing. i tend to read these light novels in bed or while eating but those two chapters i really had to stop everything i was doing. apothecary diaries does not really shy away from death or despair but the account of the insect plague felt so bleak (in a good way, in that it was well-written).
we move to ln 11. good lord i'm almost at a point where i will be FULLY caught up with the english-translated novels. help me

Disaster has struck finally!! T groots waar t al like 8 boeken naar aan t opbouwen is has happened, volgend boek gaan consequenties zijn denk ik? Als Maomao is starting to get it
