The Other Wolf #1-3

The Other Wolf

Rate this book
I have a wolf in my head. Her name is Esme, and she likes killing things.

I’m Lucy, a regular accountant turned alpha werewolf. A tryst with the wrong incubus ripped me from my ordinary life and sent me tumbling into a magical realm that I'd never even dreamed existed.

I was just adjusting to pack life when I was asked to mercy-kill the current alpha. I'm not a total bitch so I did what he asked, but it's left me as alpha of a pack I don't know, full of werewolves who resent that I still live and breathe while their old alpha doesn't. If I’m to survive in this dog-eat-dog realm, I’m going to have to win my new pack over – and fast.

I'm still trying to find my way in this violent new world when my third in command, Mark, is brutally murdered right under my damn nose. To regain control of the pack, I need find the killer and bring him to vigilante justice. Luckily, my wolf, Esme, is more than happy to get her paws dirty.

When the werewolf council show up to question me, things get a little dicey. Thank goodness I have the deadly Greg Manners, former dragon brethren and general ass-kicker, to back me up. Now I just need to unravel who'd want to kill Mark – and there’s a really long list of suspects because he was shadier than an oak tree.

I'm hip-deep in suspects, and I need to move swiftly – before the killer strikes again...

A complete series that is fun, fast-paced, with a laugh-out-loud mix of urban fantasy and mystery.

This is an absolutely wonderful series! A spin off from The Other Realm, which incidentally I highly recommend, this follows Lucy and her often hilarious wolf Esme. As Lucy tries to come to terms with being a wolf, never mind the new Alpha, she faces soooo much resistance from the pack. I loved how fair and just she is, Esme just wants to kill everyone who looks at Lucy the wrong way! And Manners, sigh...Manners, he really DOES have manners! He's fiercely protective of Lucy and the romance that develops is so sweet and delightful. There's tons of action, twists and turns, romance, the most approachable, likeable characters and incredibly brilliant pace.I promise you'll not be able to put this series down! You'll feel the need to find a quiet corner, lock the door so you're not disturbed, whilst you devour this series!

I listened to this with my 13yo and my 11yo. I previously read all 3 books separately and reviewed them.

11yo - "It was the best book ever!"

13yo - "It's a pretty good book."

As soon as the audiobook ended, they tried to start the next book in the universe.

Loved this series!

I absolutely loved this series! The characters are so well written, the storyline was interesting and the twist and turns were excellent, I really loved the ending. I listened to the three book series on audible while reading the Kindle version and the narrator did an excellent job. I'm definitely glad that I found this series!

The series begins with Lucy letting Esme, her inner wolf, tear the balls off of Lucy's ex.
From this, you might conclude that this is a brutal, violent, and man-hating story, but you'd be wrong. Sure, there's violence, and it's brutal, and some of the men who show up are clearly creeps, but none of that is the focus of the story.

The whole incident with the ex, as it happens within the story, serves to establish that Lucy is the accidental and somewhat unwilling alpha of a werewolf pack, and she desperately needs to get them to accept and trust her – a difficult task for someone who's only been a werewolf a few months. Lucy also can't quit being the alpha. The only way that would happen is if a challenger kills her – like she killed her predecessor.

Okay, maybe that's not selling the idea that this series isn't all about violence and killing, but I swear, it's not.

Really, Lucy is a woman feeling out of her depth and struggling with a situation she can't get out of, and The Other Wolf tells the story of how she grows into her role as leader of a werewolf pack.
As far as Urban Fantasy goes, there's nothing radically different or out of the ordinary about The Other Wolf, and that's fine, because the story doesn't try to be special – it's just really good. The characters are enjoyable, the pace never drags, the action is tight, and the banter is witty. There's the sizzle of romance and the what-if of mystery.

There are dryads and dragons and vampires and a carnivorous pet unicorn who gets bribed with big plates of burger patties.

In short, it's got all the good stuff you need to whisk yourself away from the real world for a while, and, let's face it, what more do you really need in this day and age?

What I'll whine about

Esme's questions about human expressions. At first, the wolf's comments were hilarious, but by the third book, they'd grown a bit old. I suspect it's because I listened to the omnibus edition with all three books in one volume, and that if I'd spaced it out a bit, the novelty wouldn't have worn off as easily.

Lucy. Now, don't get me wrong, Lucy is awesome, but sometimes her actions come across as overly rash or naive. She knows she's strong, and she knows she's got a kick-ass dangerous wolf to protect her. She's definitely stronger than she ever was as a human, but she seems to forget that the same goes for everyone else in the realm she's just entered into. She cheerfully ignores all the warnings everyone, including herself, gives her and charges in like she's invulnerable.

What I'll gush about

Lucy. Much as I whined about her in the previous paragraph, it's the very same traits that make her enjoyable. What fun is there in a main character who just does whatever everyone tells them and who never makes any mistakes. Stories are about people doing things, and Lucy's definitely one for doing. She's got agency coming out her ears, and she's in complete control of her story. Things happen because she makes them happen, and she doesn't hide anything from the reader. I always understand why she does what she does, and if I don't agree with it, well, tough luck, it's Lucy's story, not mine.

Quality. Perhaps this is an odd thing to comment on in a book, but the whole story just feels really solid. Slick. Polished. Flawless. And sure, perhaps I'm exaggerating. Surely, there are things that could have been better or that don't quite add up, but it doesn't matter – the story feels great.

Final Words

The Other Wolf is just plain good ol' Urban Fantasy.

I am a huge fan of Harris’s The Other Realm series featuring main character Jessica Sharp and so I was utterly delighted to be able to dive back into the same world again. This is a new series featuring Jessica’s best friend, Lucy, newly made werewolf and can be read as a continuation of the previous books, but it’s also strong enough to stand on its own as a series starter for the new reader.

Lucy was turned as she was dying and very shortly thereafter became Alpha of her pack under unexpected circumstances. Able to hear the wolf inside her clearly, Lucy is adjusting to her new circumstances better than most, but it’s not all smooth sailing. How’s a girl to win over her new family when they all seem to distrust her? Thankfully she also has the staunchest ally in the very hunky Greg Manners, who also just got turned and has become her Beta in the pack.

Heather G Harris is brilliant at writing strong female leads who are loving, capable, and smarter than most want to give them credit for… then she surrounds them with amazing side characters who come to recognize them for the amazing women they are and we all get to go along for the ride as they cleverly begin to fit into the magical world around them. These urban fantasies have compelling mysteries and clever twists that will keep you avidly turning the pages.

This series is actually pretty damn good. I wasn't expecting a main character like Lucy -- she's a bit of a bubbly, seemingly air-headed, ultra-feminine, social/friendly type of woman and her inner narration is pretty hilarious and made the whole series so readable and fun for me.

This 3 book series covers Lucy's growth as she starts to integrate into the Pack and to bring the Pack together, her budding romance with Greg Manners, dealing with the aftermath of Lord Samuel's death, and the overarching mystery about the werewolves' curse. The first book was so perfect, fast-paced and action-packed, with Lucy's hilarious and breezy dialogue. Second book had some slow parts and I almost stopped a few times, but powered through. The third book gets really fun again, delving into werewolf lore and mysteries, and Lucy's past and origin. I loved it. I just wish there was slightly more romance! Can't believe I'm saying this, but the romance was really awesome and I wish there was more.

Anyway, a really solid urban fantasy series with a really fun protagonist.

I read this omnibus in one greedy and delightful go, indulging in having the whole series at my fingertips. I read Jinx's series as they came out and then never got round to Lucy as quickly as I liked. However reading them back to back was a delight. Lucy has not had it easy, in fact from Jinx point of view we never really got an idea on how hard it would be. Lucy is tough under her girl next door looks and Esme as her wolf is even tougher. I loved seeing the two interact and develop. The world of the wolves was a lot more mysterious and screw riddled than I anticipated, which I absolutely loved! Every moment reading was a delight, this author is so skilled at her craft, I barely had a though for my every day busy life whilst I was reading and it took up most of my brain space. Oops, sorry work and family. Really looking forward to what happens next in this world, which is fast becoming one of my auto buy favourite urban fantasy series/author.

Loved it!

Not really sure, but this series may have been even better than the glimmer series! Five stars - will definitely read it again!

Lucy is an amazing character - beautiful, smart, and loyal. She is first introduced in the glimmer series as the loyal bestie of Jess/Jinx. Apparently, she was so popular a character that the author gave her her own series. I am so glad she did!

Greg is was a great character too. Again, totally loyal, and no problems reporting to a female leader. Just went with the flow. I would like to see a few scenes from his point of view - like when he first found out he was turned, for starters.

This Other Realm universe the author has built is amazing: cruel in many ways, but still magical. The characters the author draws are all real - they show depth, and have flaws as we all do.

I highly recommend this world - make sure you read the Glimmer series first.

Action, Humor, and a Kickass Werewolf Named Esme

This series will make you laugh, commiserate, and grip the edge of your seat. Lucy and Esme, her werewolf counterpart, make a fabulous team. Lucy is both beautiful and smart, and she's not ashamed of either, which is refreshing. She's also humble and knows her limitations. Fortunately, Esme gives Lucy the fighting instinct and knowledge she'll need to survive in a world of werewolves.

I loved everything about this series. I read each of the books in the series in a single setting. From the foul-mouthed gargoyle I wanted to adopt to the tough-as-nails love interest who I've added to book boyfriend status, I loved all the characters.

If you're not already in the Heather G. Harris fan club, these books are sure to put you there!

Much like a werewolf tears through its prey's throat, I tore though this series! Yes, it is grisly at times - wolves gotta hunt and eat - but if you can get past that (I read that stuff quickly with one eye closed and the other squinting), this is a great addition to the Other tales, and I loved getting to know Lucy and her pack! There is so much action, a bit of steam, lots of Lucy finding her way as the new alpha of the Home Counties pack, and a number of mysteries that need solving! I hope there will be more books from Lucy's point of view, and I hope Amber gets a turn in the spotlight. There's a lot going on beyond her composed exterior!

If you haven't gotten on the author's mailing list yet, I recommend doing that. There are two Other novellas you can get for free, and I recommend reading Lucy's before starting this series. You can read it afterward, like I did, but its proper place is before book 1.

Good

An enjoyable series, this is the second trilogy set in the Otherworld, and the first part of Lucy/Esme’s story.
This picks up shortly after Lucy becomes the pack alpha (so after Jinx’s first three books), and leads through her journey in uncovering a murder, finding out who her birth parents are, and tracking down a missing kid and later an evil witch. There are plenty of magical goings on, a romantic interest (fade to black), and some cameos from your favourite Otherworld characters (Jinx, Emory, Gato, Amber and more).

This is a great series to read, with a cast of lovely characters, good world building, and some intriguing situations that our MC finds herself in.
They’re engaging reads, that fans of urban fantasy will enjoy, especially those who like to see some settings in the UK.

Another Heather must read!

Witches, dragons and wolves, oh my. This is one of my favourite of Heather's. It's got a bit of everything. Magic, family, intrigue, pain, love, hope, revival and of course death. Lucy Barrett and her resident wolf Esme are a wonderful combination that makes for an exciting story that I wholeheartedly recommend. This book has my 5 stars, I'd give it more if the option was there. But, it would be disingenuous to say that there was no part that wasn't perfect. So here's mine. There is an element of controlling boyfriend that irritated me and that I felt was really off piste for the type of female empowering novels that Heather writes. It's subtle and disguised in "I'm just trying to keep you safe" but it's there. It's in no way abusive and it's not a reason not to dive right in and read every book in the series. So do that.

An amazing spin off series from Heather G Harris’ “Other Realm” series. It can be read as a stand-alone but you’ll get all the background info if you’ve read the first series.

This is Lucy’s story. She’s thrown into the role of Alpha reluctantly but she embraces it with her total “girl power” attitude. She’s such a strong, positive character. Esme, her wolf, makes me laugh so hard with her dialogue with Lucy and Manners is just a great sidekick potential / partner for Lucy. You will fall in love with Lucy as you read each of these books and cheer her on as she tries to cement her role as leader of the pack.

Who needs the big dipper for their kicks?

Well blow me down with a feather, we all knew that Lucy was going to be - Alpha. How she got there and at what cost was never questioned we knew she would be Alpha. What we didn’t know was her back story and what pack would she be Alpha of? How little do we know how little we could see into the future? The last word of Lucy after the mayhem and the revelations of the past and the future truly is our answer but how long do we have to wait for the next chapter in this superb British based Fantasy series - yes British not American let us shout this and be proud!

I love this spinoff of the other world series. This omnibus we get Lucy as the MFC and her wolf Esme as her sidekick of hilarious comments! We get to see Lucy grow as the alpha of the pack at the same time as she is trying to solve a murder mystery.
We get to meet some of the side characters we already have been introduced to in the first books with Jinx as the MFC, but now we get to know more about them with Lucy in the lead. And the story in these books are fast paced and full of magic, fantasy, muder-mystery and some slow burn romance.
Love this series and I am diving right into the next installment, with Jinx and Emory as the protagonists.

Heather does it Again!

Okay so I have been totally captured by Lucy and Esme! I liked her as Jinxs best friend but now I have a whole new appreciation for them both. I love how her story is being told and growing. I love that Heather keeps Jess and Emory and other characters crossing back and forth between books. This is phenomenal world building. If you haven't read any of Heather's books I highly recommend them, start with Jinx and follow the publication dates for what I think is the best way to read the stories.
Thanks Heather for another fabulous tale!

This series is another wonderful piece of Heather’s Other world. Werewolves have never been my favourite fantasy species, but she turns the whole genre on its head with her approach to the magic and descriptions of the wolves. Lucy and Esmee are wonderful as kick ass FMCs, showing vulnerability as well as strength. Also, Heather’s treatment of idioms has me ROFL, as well as her blue wit. She hits all the right notes for my funny bone. This is an excellent series and highly recommended. I read the audiobook and Alyse Gibbs is fantastic!

What a ride!

Lucy and her wolf Esme are the new alpha of the pack, which turns out to be a constant battle. And with their enemies coming from outside the pack as well as within it, they have their paws full. It’s going to take all of Lucy’s diplomacy skills, learned straight outta high school dealing with mean girls, and her new family of werewolves, a reluctant witch, and everyone she saves along the way. It just goes to show that family isn’t just something you’re born into, but it’s also something you make for yourself. And family is everything.

Loved. Maybe one smidge less than the Jinx series but virtually just as much. As expected with Harris the world building is detailed and descriptive. The characters engaging and relatable. The twists and turns just keep coming until you feel as if you, yourself, can't breathe. You are rooting for Lucy and the Home Counties pack from day one. Book three made me sob and sob. I'll definitely be back for book four and all other series by Harris. Now I'm off to spend some time with Amber and the gang.

I loved this series! From the first book, you really get hooked! It starts off with less action and a lot of world building, but as the books go on, there is a lot of action. I read this whole series fairly quickly for me! I started with The Other series and there is lots of crossover characters and plots. I definitely recommend reading all of these books! Lucy is a great alpha and will always rise to the occasion. With help from her wolf, Esme, there is not anything they can't overcome!

it’s ok

This series was not my favorite. Not even close
The books have Ridiculous and unworthy of the situation, banal sayings by Lucy. Anytime there was a problem, the answer was to pop back into the past. I KNEW who the protagonist was in book one.
Why did I read? Hope. Several people told me how I must read as it’s so good.
No. Ok read. Lots of very annoying and boring sections in the last book.

Alpha queen

Lucy thought she was just a human. Then as she lay dying, her best friend stabbed her with a magic knife and Lucy became a werewolf. Not just a wolf, an alpha. When Lucy discovers who her birth parents were, she realizes she never was just a human. Through all the attacks and backstabbing, Lucy and her wolf, Esme, rise to the challenge, protect their pack, and help some of the other paras as well.

Fantastic series

Yet another cracking series, with both laughs and tears (but not too many)
If you like feisty ladies and snark then this is a good choice. I love reading series that interconnect so am looking forward to moving back into Jess’s life again next! I also love the fact that this series is NOT all about what happens between the sheets….it focuses on the story lines….a refreshing change !

I’ve read the entire series, and it was just so much fun. I hadn’t read the previous series this was an extension of, but that didn’t hinder my enjoyment in anyway. In fact, it just made me want to read about Jinx even more. If you are looking for a fun, well-written, paranormal romance/urban fantasy, look no further than this one. Highly recommend.

This is the 2nd series set in Otherworld.

Another great series I'm gonna re read simetime

At one point I looked up to start talking to my wife about something in the book, but then I realized she doesn't like to read and it's not a TV show. It's just that kind of book: you assume everyone has read it because it's just so dang good

loved Lucy’s story

I am totally enjoying the Other realm Universe series. Heather G Harris has written a wonderful story with wonderful characters. Lucy’s story is as great as Jinx’s story and combined both and you have an incredible fun intriguing sexy story. I’m looking forward to the next story in this series. Wow what an exciting and exhilarating series about the walls in the other World Series. It’s great to see Lucy come into her own with Greg by her side and up all the other supernatural characters. We’ve grown to love and enjoy. Narration was excellent too can’t wait for Mob books.
