A synthesis and summary, for the non-biologist, of the published work on vampire bats. The author explores their biology, bat-borne diseases, economic effects of vampire parasitism, methods used to control them, and legends regarding vampyres (the spelling is used to distinguish human superstitions from real bats). Very pleased with how much I learned and how fascinating the information was. What an amazing course of evolution that allows this bat to land, scope, bite, and drink the blood of animals without them even knowing. Beautifully creepy. Scarily diverse.
A fun and informative book that compiles a wide range of vampire bat facts and presents them in an instructive way. While not the longest or deepest book, it touches on many different aspects of the vampire bat. Unfortunately, there were a few printing errors and some slightly awkward writing from Brown that detracted slightly from the experience for me. Oh well.
This is a good book to read if you are unfamiliar with vampire bats. I discusses the three vampire bat species, their range, their physiology, and gives a little bit of vampire legend.
