Good story, abysmal hero

I enjoyed the story. The exceptions are two.
1. The repeated use of threats to Ray's family
And
2. Ray. Who I found to be infantile, selfish, self-centered, incapable of empathy, and borish.

On a broader note, I read a lot of fiction. While reading this and reflecting on several other novels where I found the hero insufferable, I found myself asking, "Do the authors believe their protagonists are good role models?" I doubt I will ever know.

Great story, way, way to wordy. Stayed with it because of the story, but skipped many chapters. Only had to back track a couple of times

Twists & turns right to the last page!

Our hero Ray gets caught up in one amazing adventure after another as this whirlwind journey jumps from space to earth to space to strange worlds! Every time Ray thinks he just survived a challenge, another is waiting to take its place. This would be a great young adult book as well. The language and situations, although exciting, are appropriate for teens. I would not have been able to put the book down when I was in Jr High!

I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 because it sometimes feels quite wordy as we are inside Rays head and get stuck over analyzing or recalling past situations. Don’t get me wrong, it moves along, but rehashing and recalling everything added unneeded length. Sometimes letting the reader think through those situations and do our own recalling and maybe even flipping back to recall some details gives more pleasure. I ended up reading a different book around 1/2 way through, but then came back and I’m glad I did. The wife loves sci-fi and was asking about the book constantly, and will probably read it too.

I got the 6 book collection, so we had 2200 pages of action, and it set up yet another book on the very last page with an awesome twist. Whew. It’s a light read from the point that other than our protagonist the rest of the characters are simple in motive & depth. We spend the entire book inside Ray’s head. I’m sure it was a blast to write it!

So will I buy the next book, into the series. Yea, probably.

A Real Page Turner…So Many Pages!

This 6 book set is a good sci-fi romp. I give it five stars primarily because of the effort Falconer must have put into this tome. Falconer is a good writer. The limitations of first person narrative are barely noticeable. That part is well done. And it is a good story. Or stories. Yet, it really is long. The protagonist and narrator, Ray Barkley, spends A LOT of time in introspection and recap. Maybe Falconer feels that is necessary to allow readers to simply read any of the books independently. And first person narrative requires some of that. But it really does slow down the pace, and through 6 books becomes somewhat irritating. I think a good editor could easily condense this into a 4 or even 3 book series, making the pacing much quicker. It’s not hard science fiction; its strength is in its characters who face one crisis after another. These are good characters who you can’t help but root for. Sometimes you have to suspend your disbelief, but hey, it is fun to see them try to overcome them. If you don’t mind a slower pace you should enjoy these stories. Overall, I did.

Mr Falconer's dialog is masterful in keeping with the characters' personalities.  His exceptional wordsmith skills are demonstrated in his vivid descriptions of locations and actions. His prescience is uncanny. Further, there are current issues brilliantly intertwined that incite the reader to think of our current sociological issues. As an advanced reader I've been blessed in reading the books and strongly advise reading all the books in order to truly enjoy not just the story arc but the evolution of the characters and their responses to obstacles and challenges. Just when you think there's finally going to be a peaceful resolution new issues arise. Really a unique and plausible story tale and characters.

This series deserves book shelf space as it will become a classic story arc that also reflect global issues at the beginning of the 21st Century.

This reads as essentially the run through of an 80s computer adventure game that you are playing as the protagonist. Puzzles are relatively straightforward and things and vehicles that you ‘pick up’ have linear and pretty obvious uses (although there is creative use of various companions from robots to people via a bird. I am saying this not in a negative way but because I enjoyed it very much as such. As you are inside the main character you are not given many extraneous options through the labyrinth of actions and direction (not maze because there really aren’t choices as such) is increasingly unlikely as you become the most important person on (or around) Earth. Genuinely enjoyed this and romp which reminded me of Thomas Hardy with all the end of chapter cliffhangers.

Craig A Falconer is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. I read book 1 of his “Not Alone” series and continued it with Audible. His storytelling and attention to detail is outstanding and the reason why I bought the Earthburst Saga box set.

The 6 books and 2170 pages took me a while to read. Not because I wasn’t enjoying it, but due to lack of time on my part.

While on holiday, I powered through the last 3 books, was engrossed in every page and loved the ending. The characters are believable and you can feel the emotions they are going through. I’ve now just bought book 7 and can’t wait to get stuck in.

If you’re considering reading the series, go for it, you won’t be disappointed.

Good at first

This was pretty good at first with the clever intrigue around Zola and his nefarious reasoning. However, after that section of the story was over it became 'rinse and repeat'. Each individual event did only be solved by the same two people. It was the same every time. A solution would be found and then, at the last minute, something would happen and they would only have a few minutes left to improvise. It was a very formulaic shirt line and it around have be nice it it weren't a basic two person story.

almost perfect sci-fi series

The first 3 books were perfect science fiction books IMO! Action, danger, suspense, around the world travel, underground bunkers, secret spaceships… everything you could want! No sex, only a little swearing. Fantastic. Then the 4th book did a long, wordy, rambling review. It felt like it stalled out. I flipped forward a bunch, and about 40% of the way through, it got exciting again. Satisfying nail-biting conclusion. I loved it! More great sci-fi please!

Superbly Imaginative

Craig A Falconer's ability to merge real world issues with a world of his own design results in a realistic scifi adventure. His penchant for delving into the character's thought processes can be a little overdone. It makes the book's progress slow at times but ultimately is what gives the reader character depth and nuance that really draws to reader into the plotline.

Concept and story of this book was good the execution however made me put it down on several occasions.
Some of compared to hail Mary and the Martian and I can’t see the inspiration there however the story moves too slowly and far too much self exposition. I found he didn’t Just internalise his thoughts but then he would go the next layer to internalise what those thoughts inspired or were inspired by and always at a moment of high tension and it would diffuse the situation and slow the story down.
It’s a shame cause I would have liked to have read the outcome, but tedious

I've never quite read a book like this. It's so much first person narrative that it gets annoyingly hard to read. The first book that style kind of works since there is just the pretty much Ray in the book. But by the time you get to book 6 you are very much over Ray Ray's constant internal monolog. It seems only Ray and Driver can do anything to save anything. There are three more books but it was a small struggle to get thru that last book. Nope not even going to consider reading them.

Excellent +

He really has created an incredibly readable experience!!! I marvel at the way pulled this series together in a way that kept me reading without scanning! So I guess I need to buy the next... Will it end there? I've read some of his other books, and they are all excellent but this one tops the list!!! 🙂

Meh, again.

I got pulled in by good reviews on this, but found it to be a plodding first person bore. Other people must like different things than I do. On to the next, hopefully good book. If it is not good, then I might have to start reading romance novels or start watching reruns of The Love Boat.

Really a 3.75. I couldn’t give it a 4.

The biggest problem I have with this series is the inconsistency in the plot through several areas. There is also the fact that Ray and Driver survived everything the author threw at them. Their eminent deaths were obvious in all of the books.

Will I read the rest of the series? Yes I will.

Very slow start but picks up and keeps going

The story starts out slow. I actually put it away for a day and then picked it back up to give it a try. There are other slow parts, but over all its a good sci fi adventure. The characters are engaging and, I felt, well developed. The story is too. I suggest hanging in through the story. It really is good.

Great Six Book Series.

The storyline, fast paced action and totally believable characters kept me captivated through the end. I do have to say, there was some hesitation in book four. However, humans, aliens and AI kept my interest and the continuing storyline kept me reading and fingers turning the pages.
Thanks for a very entertaining read!

Good read

Very well written, danger, mystery, comedy, drama and action all rolled up in a whole lot of WTH moments. The main characters are constantly bombarded with one mind blowing perilous obstacle after another. This whole series was truly difficult to put down, now that I’m finished I can finally catch up on my sleep lol. Although…there is a cliff hanger ending.

Lots of interesting plot developments

These first six books make for an exciting and interesting journey. I enjoyed many of the plot developments and characters. By the end, it was getting a bit tiring that a new problem developed at every turn, but I am still engaged enough to see how the story continues in the seventh book!

Exciting g, creative storyline with lots of action

I don't normally read sci-fi but this novel was so intriguing with a great cast of characters, mysteries, many hair-raising adventures leaving you wondering how the main characters are going to survive.
Really well-written with unexpected outcomes. This is a must-read novel. You won't be disappointed.

Initially intriguing but way too wordy. If Ray was going to develop into a decent character, I sincerely hope he managed to become less accident-prone.

I gave up after he lost his contact lenses down the drain. I could see it coming a mile off (hello, parrot) and can't imagine why he didn't.

Perhaps it got better, but I have far too many good books to read. Sorry, Mr Falconer.

I wanted to love this, but it was a bit of a rollercoaster. The premise was exciting, but somewhere along the way, it lost its momentum. Some parts were thrilling, while others felt overly detailed and slow. It had moments of brilliance, but they were few and far between. It’s good, just not great.

There were some things I really liked about this, but overall it felt a bit uneven. The story had a lot of promise, but some parts felt forced. It didn’t quite deliver the emotional impact I was expecting. Still, there were some great lines and memorable moments. Worth reading, but not unforgettable.

Just finished the first book, Last Man Standing. Will continue on with this series, as I am a space cadet disguised as a soon to be 70 year old, going on 25 year old. I am drawn into Mr. Falconers writing style, which produces great entertainment, in my humble opinion. Looking forward to book number 2.

Suspense that does not end in sci-fi adventure!

Great story for sci-fi fans. Not the typical space opera. Very well thought out and keeps you reading page to page . Hard to put the book down! You have been warned!

Good read

I really enjoyed the series from beginning to end. Lots of twists and turns to keep it interesting. I would have rated 5 stars but for me it went into a lot of unnecessary details sort of rambling on. I skipped those parts and really enjoyed the rest
