I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

*All my reviews (including ARCs) are intended for reader consumption and not for the authors.

Let me preface this review by saying that this is my first time reading a Wattpad story all the way through and my first time reading a book written in Taglish.

With those disclaimers in mind, I'm sad to say that while I wasn't disappointed in this book, it annoyed me more than anything. There were so many grammatical errors and word choices that were just wrong that I think this book is in dire need of a much better editor. The code switching also didn't feel natural, but that might just be me since I haven't read Taglish literature before.

I also found so many scenes to be downright cringey. If I had to count the number of times I face-palmed myself from reading a scene that was so awkward and uncomfortable, I'd need a two extra hands, which is three too many. Many of the scenes involving women also felt very male gazey and borderline sexist. I'm not quite sure yet how I feel about the overall message of the book but I did like how it ended.

Despite my qualms with this book, I have to commend the exceptional character work done here. Every single character, including minor ones, felt fleshed out and well-developed. The plot itself is tightly structured and never once feels directionless. I thought the sex scenes were also well-written.

Overall I think Wattpad stories just might not be for me.

It's been a while since I last read from a Filipino author and this one did not disappoint. His Plastic Doll is a story that I was able to fully relate with. It felt like I was reading about my own experiences because of the topics discussed in the book.

The story is that of a gay college student named Conan who had his share of happiness and heartache. The novel also features the story of Ryle who"s life seems perfect but behind that impression, Ryle has this big wall that helps him keep his biggest secrets.

From a story-telling perspective, the narration is quite easy to follow. The development of the story that features current and past scenarios is highly digestible and will not confuse the readers. Also, the dual perspective made the story easier to understand.

Apart from the story, it is the character development that made me love the book. Conan and Ryle evolved physically, and emotionally and reached a level of maturity that can be understood and appreciated even by older readers.

Although the setting and some premises of the story are typical in the BL genre, the diverse characters and the plot showcased in the book make it still a unique BL story. It may not contain complicated plot twists and a ton of cliffhanger moments but the simplicity of its delivery made it great.

I can't wait to read the sequel (or even prequels) of this book since I enjoyed it much. This is a must-read for those who understand the Filipino language and are part/supportive of the LGBTQIA Plus Community.

The author sent me a copy for an honest review. I don't usually accept to make/write a book review; I agreed because this is the kind of book I want to read more. Living in the Philippines our bookstores here has very limited option of books with LGBTQIA+ characters, most of the ones available are either YA or written by a woman. I have no issues with those just to clarify, I still seek those out and read some of them but when you're older you kind of want more, and still different if it's #OwnVoices. Mark Fermill's new book, His Plastic Doll is kind of like a spicier distant cousin of Heartstopper (the TV show because I still haven't read the graphic novels). The writing is easy to read, I thought I wouldn't like the author's choice of using/mixing Tagalog and English but conversations and thoughts in this still feels natural to me (there were moments lang I thought it made the characters feel a little conyo, but it didn't really bother me). I'm glad I said yes to this, I enjoyed His Plastic Doll and will definitely seek out Mark Fermill's other works.

The story is so well-crafted, it's so wonderful how the author explores the characters' mind/thoughts. Detailed and thought provoking in how the author addressees the issue within the book, along with the characters. Every single chapter could bring you multiple feelings, you'll feel the excitement, the joy, the sadness, the thrill, and the comical vibe of the book. And most importantly, the memorable feeling of acceptance of the coming-out stage in this story.

It is a 'must' read book. Highly recommended, you're missing something if you're still not reading this! ✨

I love that this is not your typical, meet cute BL story. It's actually for a more matured audience but I love that it tackles about the importance of SOGIE and we need more of this kind of stuff. I also appreciate how it was written in alternating english and tagalog, it makes it more fun to read.

In this poignant narrative, the author delves into the intricacies of Conan's journey as a gay individual, navigating the complexities of a life that has become challenging since embracing his authentic self. Conan's quest for love unfolds against the backdrop of a society that often struggles to accept diversity. In the face of adversity, he contemplates the whims of Cupid, questioning whether the mythical archer will aim his enchanted arrow at someone who will truly understand and cherish him. Conan yearns not just for any love but for a profound connection that transcends societal expectations—a genuine and unconditional love that embraces him for the person he is, fostering a narrative that explores the universal longing for acceptance and understanding in the LGBTQ+ experience.

Contrasting the complexities of Conan's life is the intriguing character of Ryle, the epitome of campus boyfriend material. As the layers of Ryle's past are delicately unveiled, I found myself deeply admiring the resilience and strength of this man. The author skillfully weaves a narrative around Ryle's history, providing a compelling backdrop that becomes a pivotal catalyst for his introspection and self-discovery. The emotional weight of Ryle's past casts a poignant shadow over the story, offering a compelling reason for him to question the very fabric of his existence, adding depth and complexity to his character.

The author adeptly navigates the intricate dynamics of relationships, illuminating how the bonds of family and friendships become lifelines for individuals grappling with questions about their identity. The supporting cast, with their unique personalities and perspectives, injects a refreshing diversity of experiences into the narrative. Their presence not only amplifies the storyline but also provides a mirror to reflect the importance of emotional support and understanding in the face of self-doubt.

Thank you to the author himself, Mr. Mark Fermill, for the opportunity to read your recent creation. I may not win your book giveaway last time :(, but I still thank you for sharing its digital copy. I truly enjoyed this book; all emotions are inside of it.

It’s my first time to read a GL Story written by a Filipino Author, and I must say that it was amazing. Every fabric of characters difference and unique personalities flow right.

The story tells how deep the gays mind is. How they react when society or even their family do judge them. Conan life mirror the reality of every man experienced difficult situation coming out. I remembered the song “Sirena” by Gloc 9. The line “Mas lalaki pa sa lalaki ang bakla”. This is indeed true.

The author tells the story of every character very accurately. How friendship develops and gets stronger when difficult situations fire them. Who’s your friend when everyone hates you? Who’s your friend when you want to spill every sad words you keep?

It was a great read. You will laugh, cry, and fall in love with every character.

I love how it explores deeper than the surface of the thoughts of being confused in sexual orientation and gender identity. It's comical, yet it has an impact on every line and scene that the characters play. What I really like the most is how the story takes the slow-burn process that makes readers excited and craving for what will happen next. It is somehow very educational for me, for someone who is limited for the ideas about LGBTQ+, this book made me realized some things. A salute to the author for writing this – one of my favorites and will ever be.

reviewing this book is hard as i both loved and hated several parts of it. but to summarize my feels parang ano... parang medyo confused ung book? di malaman kung sa wholesome route ba o sa pure erotica pupunta? parang ganun

it started off okay. nahook ako. ung writing voice ok naman. ket taglish di naman tunog maarte unlike karamihan ng wattpad books kong nabasa

most of the sex scenes were great! i think un ang pinaka strength nitong book. it knows how to really deliver on that area. saktong balance lang with actions and emotions. hindi rin porny ang dating which is good. some sex scenes nga lang specifically ung galing sa flashbacks i think were unnecessary

whats stopping me on rating this lower were the supporting characters. theyre so precious. specially zyion!!! my god. zyion. such a green flag. ill really be on the lookout if ever na magkaroon ng book na sa kanya nakapokus. sana lang magkaroon

as an erotica, sure may laban to. kung un lang habol mo you will definitely love this. but overall mas gusto ko sanang nagfocus na lang ito on wholesomeness

I was asked to provide an honest review as an Advanced Reading Copy recipient for this novel.

As a Filipino Queer Author myself, I could easily have awarded it five stars were it not for the technical issues. One aspect that confused me was the timeline, particularly the transitions between flashbacks and the present day, which were unclear. Some scenes seemed superfluous, as they did not contribute to the character's development and could have been abbreviated; the prose was, at times, redundant.

However, I highly recommend the storyline and the character dynamics between Ryle and Conan. As a queer author, one of my core principles is the accurate representation of our community. This novel commendably addresses sexual themes, language, and discrimination within our community, making it a highly recommended read for anyone interested in a queer/BL novel penned by a male author.

What I liked:
• The pure friendship
• Fully realized characters
• Spicy sex scenes indeed 👌
• Effective showcasing of grief and anxiety from being ghosted by someone
• Conan and Ryle's growth

What I didn't like:
• Flashbacks could be cut shorter
• Ryle's implied impression that
• Micro-cheating

One small detail that is worth noticing is on how the book really cares on showing the necessary preparations before doing sex, such as not forgetting to wear condoms and on even using lube, which most erotica books tend to forget or even ditch entirely. Plus points on that.
