When the Earl of Granville is skewered with a pitchfork in his own stables, Inspector Haze and Lord Redmond must unearth decades-old family secrets in order to unravel the motive behind the murder. But just when they think they’re making headway, disturbing new revelations come to light and cast doubt on their findings.
As Redmond and Haze finally inch closer to the truth, a faceless enemy will stop at nothing to keep them from uncovering it.
To write a novel was a dream of mine since I was a child. Life, my practical nature, and self-doubt got in the way, so it was decades later that an opportunity to write finally presented itself. I honestly didn't think I had what it takes to write a full-length novel, but once I faced the blank screen and my fingers touched the keyboard, everything disappeared except my characters and their surroundings, and suddenly I knew that this was what I was born to do.
Since then, I've written many books and have enjoyed some positive reviews, but sometimes, when I stop to reflect, I'm still amazed that I'm living my dream.

You can always count on Irina Shapiro to come up with a twisty, intriguing, 'I would never have thought of that' murder for Jason and Daniel to solve. She really does that again here. I don't know how she comes up with the plots for her books, but there's a whole lot of imagination involved. And, as usual, she points out the contrasts between the life that Jason lives and the life that Daniel lives. All of the characters here are examples of how much in their lives depended upon who you come from and their station in life. Realistically, because of their stations in life, Jason and Daniel would never have become the good friends they are if it wasn't for the murders they both work together to solve. Beginning with the first murder and the number of possible suspects, it was looking like they would not be solving the case, but Redmond and Haze never give up. Irina Shapiro always gives you a fantastic story that really makes you think, so when I'm done with the book I'm always looking forward to the next one.
It looks like Daniel can't really get a break! I hope there are happier times for him in the future.
This case was quite complicated. But as the revelations started coming, it did become clearer who the culprit was. I'm also guessing that the author wanted to highlight how some parents would do anything for their children, but some are quite self-absorbed and only worry about how their children could affect their own standing in society and their image.
Another satisfying addition to the series. Haze catches the case of a murdered earl and Redmond is requested to do an autopsy. The man was killed in the stables of his country home just before Christmas, stabbed with a pitchfork. At first, Daniel and Jason are told that the man is the Earl of Granville, but he looks too thin and is wearing shabby clothing. Was he in disguise? The earl was away visiting his elderly aunt before the holidays, what made him return early? The initial suspect is the stable boy who found the body but why would he want to kill the earl. Daniel & Jason go to visit the aunt and learn that she died 5 years ago and the earl hasn't been back since. The earl was really in town visiting his mistress. But when they spoke to her, she said that she hadn't seen him since October but she worried that her estranged father might have found the earl and harmed him. But he has a rock solid alibi since he was in jail at the time of the killing. And then the big twist, the earl returned home! The dead man wasn't the earl at all but was his half-brother who escaped from the asylum and is rightful earl by birthright. The dead man was the legitimate son of the deceased earl but he was dim-witted so the earl put him in an institution and switched him with his illegitimate son, born to him by the housemaid, now the head housekeeper. The earl had been away trying to track his half-brother down after his escape. But then suddenly the earl is dead, also killed with a pitchfork, so was he the original target after all? No, but he was killed to make it look that way. The earl's teenaged daughter, sneaking out at night to see her new horse, killed the half-brother when he snuck up and frightened her. The earl was killed by his wife after he told her the truth about the dead man and she feared that the truth would be made public and they would lose everything that they had. So she killed the earl to protect his and her daughter's secrets. She accepted blame for both deaths in order to protect her daughter and ended up committing suicide in prison. Daniel was injured on the case, having been stabbed in the back by the butler, who was the stable boy's father, and Jason did surgery to save his life. Daniel and his nanny, Rebecca, seem on the verge of an engagement and Jason and his wife are still besotted with little Lucy.

I love this series and this installment of the historical whodunit series staring Captain Jason Redmond and Inspector Daniel Haze. Like the other books in the series, it had a layered storyline, an intriguing mystery, surprising plot twists, and suspense. I was equally desperate to read it all at once to solve the mystery and also to savor it and make it last. Jason and Daniel are portrayed as real, relatable and complex people who have flaws and scars, but are really just trying to do their best as messy humans. Captain Jason Redmond is an American surgeon who inherited his British grandfather’s estate and title. He is living with his wife and infant daughter in London while he teaches and volunteers at the hospital. Daniel Haze is a detective inspector for Scotland Yard. He is widowed and lives with his young daughter. They are good friends and their different approaches often complement each other while solving cases. Daniel requests Jason’s help when the body of an earl is discovered in his country stable stabbed with pitchfork. The investigation leads Daniel and Jason to unlikely places, dead ends, plot twists, and surprising revelations. As always, there are smaller side personal story arcs and social commentary which enrich the main plot line and give the characters greater dimension. I am so happy there are more books to read in this series.
This Redmond and Haze mystery crossed many lines! A love a parent has for their children and a father who cares more for his mistress than his wife! There are decades old secrets that are revealed when a man resembling the Earl of Granville run through with a pitchfork and actually stuck in the wood in a grisly death! There are lies and secrets that were kept when the true heir was committed to an asylum and the illegitimate son unaware of the fact he had a brother! Speculation abounds and when there is another murder on a week the same way well this has to stop! Inspector Haze is getting close when he is struck down and almost looses his life! Will the killer get away? Can there be more than one killer on the loose? Who would attempt murder on the Inspector in broad daylight! This one pulls you and and won’t let go! Just when an arrest is made all is still unresolved! Can there be more…., Bravo from beginning to end! Both Inspector Haze and Lord Redmond personal life also is revealed more in depth!
I have enjoyed all the Redmond and Haze Mysteries. They are easy reading when one doesn't want to tax the brain too much, but interesting enough to make me want to keep turning the pages. Since reading from book 1 I feel I've got to know the American Lord Jason Redmond and (by now, since he started as a constable) Inspector Daniel Haze, in their private and professional lives. I have read quite a few of Irina Shapiro 's time travel and Romance books and enjoyed them. My only criticism is poor research in this series. Perhaps others might not notice, but being English and having a general interest in history, I spotted several mistakes across the series. In this one, a criminal is being sent to the Fleet prison, by the side of the Fleet river in London where Fleet street is now. The problem is that this book is set in 1868 and the Fleet prison closed in 1846 and the river Fleet was gradually covered over from the 18th century. After a flood in 1826, the Fleet was channelled underground and completely covered by 1876.
Pleasant and easy to read murder mystery. This is the first book I have read in the series and I enjoyed the British/American duo murder solving team. It reminds me of Lee Strauss's Lady Gold series where there is a titled British female and an American doctor duo solving crime in London in the 1920s. The combination of British and American personalities and ways of doing things can be funny and enlightening.
In this tale of murder, there are convoluted aspects that have us wondering just what is going on. I found my feelings toward the current Lord of the Manor changing as the story went on. This is a character that is so fun to hate and paint as a villain, but by the end I felt quite sympathetic toward him. It is tough being a titled landowner in England. So many rules to follow and such a narrow path that can be trod . . .
There are definitely surprises in the final reveal, but I followed my instincts and was partially right. Always fun to solve it alongside our characters!
I am still reading the Redman & Haze series and can vouch that it is as good as ever. If you enjoy British cozies, be sure to check out this series featuring an American Doctor and veteran of the U.S. Civil War, now a British Earl by virtue of being the next in line to his Grandfather's Estate and title. Redman is the American Hero we all wished had been real and, more importantly, still existed. He is a straightforward, honest, man who learned compassion as a survivor Yankee officer prisoner in the dread Andersonville prison, who finds a friend and Associate of a Scotland Yard detective. You like both Redman and Haze and enjoy their method of investigation and their basic decency. Start the series at the beginning when Redman is newly arrived in England and Haze is a village police officer to begin their journey. You will not regret it.
December 1868, Surrey, England. The Earl of Granville is found murdered in the estate's stables in an unusually gruesome manner. Lord Jason Redmond and Inspector Daniel Haze are assigned to investigate, but before they get very far, it seems to be a case of mistaken identity, and soon the real earl is murdered in the exact same way. Redmond and Haze must search back through generations to unravel the mystery which will lead them to a motive. Unfortunately, many of the suspects seem to have legitimate reasons for wanting the earl dead, and even more reasons to keep their dangerous secrets from being uncovered. The mystery was compelling and twisty, and I really enjoy the friendship and working relationship between Jason and Daniel, as unlikely as it should be.
This series just keeps getting better. Jason and Daniel are on the case when the Earl of Granville is found skewered to death in his stables. But it turns out it was not the Earl. When the Earl is later found dead by the same method in the stables, the case becomes confusing and complicated. Having stumbled upon an important clue in an interview, Daniel is followed, stabbed in the back and left for dead. He is found fortunately, looses a kidney and fights for his life when a serious infection sets in. The revelations in this case keep popping up and makes for a thoroughly entertaining read. I am so ready to dive into the next book.
Once again I find myself lost in the world of Lord Redmond and Inspector Haze. This story had the expected yet unexpected twists and turns that are so enjoyable to read. Not only do I love the mysterious murders, I absolutely love the personal relationships as the change, grow and evolve. I just finished #10 and already intrigued by #11. I will be staying late again tonight reading the continued adventures of two of England’s finest crime fighters.
As always an engaging read. The plot moved quickly. I see a future romance in the offing for Daniel Haze which was just starting to present itself in this book. I also enjoy the ongoing theme of a civil war doc who has inherited an English title. Characters don’t seem to know how to react to the American accent, the title and the fact he’s a working doctor. On the surface it doesn’t seem that it will work but it does!
This is the 10th book in Redmond/Haze series that I have read. I do not recall this level of melodrama in previous books. For me, it went a bit overboard. I still like the main characters, so I am sure I will continue to read further books in the series as I enjoy Victorian period. One of the main characters of this duo suffers attack that is life threatening as the duo uncovers long held secrets.
December 1868. The Earl of Granville has returned early from visiting his aunt, Lady Seton. But he is discovered in his stables, murdered. But why is he dressed in shabby clothes and looking malnourished. Soon secrets of the family will be exposed when another body, killed in the same way, is discovered in the same place. Inspector Haze and Jason Redmond investigate. An entertaining historical mystery with its likeable main characters. .
I have read all, the books in this series and I can't wait for the next in series. I love Jason and Daniel. The mysteries are well written and interesting, and I don't figure out the killer until the very end. I would recommend this series and all of Irena Shapiro's books.
I enjoyed this book as much as the others, however, there was one error towards the end When Jason was confronting Euphemia about her involvement he said she had allowed Viola to disclose the stable hand’s parentage to the inspector. But the inspector was in a hospital bed at this time and it was his superior present at the interview. Otherwise a good read.

Another Lord Redmond and Inspector Haze mystery, but this time Inspector Haze almost loses his life! Dealing with with the peerage can be quite strenuous, especially when heirs are involved. A man is killed, but who he is takes everyone by surprise and throws an inheritance into question leading to another murder!
Irina Shapiro writes a brillig historical murder wrapped in a multitude of mystery layers. Daniel and Jason with strict guidelines from Ransom lead us through the seamy immoral streets of a London less civilized. Enjoyable read / listen about to those who believe they are better and deserve more, thank you Irina Shapiro, much appreciated. :-)
Jason and Daniel set out to investigate a man murdered by a pitchfork in a Lord’s stable. Their investigation leads to duplicity the Lord’s family including the servants. And someone literally gets stabbed in the back. Again, could not not the book down.
The killer was obvious pretty early and why. I just kept saying “It was the X, it was the X” over and over. Still well done. And I learned something about Bromine (I am a nurse). I still enjoy the characters quite a bit but I also still think Jason solves most of the mysteries.
Historical Mysteries is one of my favorite genres. Redmond and Haze characters are like being reacquainted with good friends. The mystery in this story was well done and kept me guessing. I liked getting the personal lives of both main characters. It was good having Micah in the story.
OMG! What an excellent series. This one was my favorite so far. Every book keeps you quessing. I couldn't put the book down,I had to know what happened. If you enjoy murder mysteries, you should try this series. I would recommend reading in order, to better understand the different family dynamics.
It's good to spend time with friends Redmond and Haze even if this story didn't quite do it for me. I really like Shapiro's way with words, and her low isn't as low as other of my low ratings. Eh, makes no sense I guess, so I'll leave it here.
(Please forgive my poor English, my excuse is I’m Swedish).
Ms. Shapiro is an artist with her writing and knowledge of Regency England and early Scotland Yard. Redmond and Haze are the perfect crime solving duo. The story grabs you and does not let go. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
Such a good story. Thoroughly enjoy this series. Redmond and Haze are well drawn characters and excellent detectives. Plot well presented so that reader cannot solve the mystery until the detectives reveal the truth. Looking forward to the next novel.
This is the best series of books I've read in a very long time! You'll want to reread them and then wait anxiously for each new one. The characters are strong, relatable, and likable. Great storytelling!
I love this series, and the mysteries were so challenging in this one. Redmond and Haze are the perfect pair to solve the most complex case, and I thoroughly enjoy the development of their characters.
Redmond and Haze are at it again! Lookalike murder victims, A haughty noble family and intriguing twists and turns. And end I didn't see coming. A great read!
This is another good one from the author of the series. Not padded out with extra repeated conversations and speculations, but full of surprises. You will never guess the end!
