A quick, sweet read

Taking place at Meryton, in the few weeks after Bingley's arrival and the winter.
The angst level is low due to the speediness of the plot growth.
Special mention goes to Col. F, who eggs Darcy on, towards happiness and away from future misery.

Lovely.

SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain ***SPOILERS ***

>>Rating: clean >>Angst Level: just slight for a minute >>Source: I borrowed this from KU 10-31-23 and volunteered to leave a review of my thoughts and opinions. 11 chapters [3.5 stars] >>Timeline: around Netherfield Ball

Since this was such a short story, at about 62 pages, the action and events moved quickly. Don’t blink or you will miss something important. Elizabeth was concerned about Jane’s feelings over Bingley and Jane was concerned with Elizabeth’s feelings for Mr. Darcy that were changing daily. Darcy didn’t have a clue that Miss Elizabeth despised him and soon Richard arrived for the comedic relief and to set both Darcy and Bingley on the straight and narrow. I loved that guy.

What I liked: There were little interactions with the silly younger sisters. I can only take so much of Lydia. And, there was only minimal interaction with Mrs. Bennet. I mean, you had to have her voice grating on someone’s nerves. She did it up right, for sure. Bless her heart. This was cute.

This short story (62 pages) is a nice palate-cleanser between long novels. On the day of the Netherfield ball, Darcy receives a letter from Richard, in which he calls Darcy an "unmitigated fool" for thinking that Elizabeth is beneath his notice, and for interfering with Bingley's love life. This shakes Darcy up enough to question Elizabeth during their dance that night about the level of Jane's affection, and she questions him about Bingley's constancy. Richard has upset the apple cart and initiated quite a bit of self-examination in Darcy's mind. Things move quickly towards their inevitable end. A sweet story.

Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy wants to win her heart, but first must examine and change his attitude.

Will Miss Elizabeth Bennet ever forgive his unkind remark ? Will Mr. Darcy allow her a glimpse of his heart? This short and sweet story was delightful and just the thing to read when you only have a little time. Enjoy!

Quick and Quite Good

This variation is a quick read but it covers all the major problems quite well. The Bingleys' difficulties, whether inconstancy or supercilliousness, Darcy's hauteur, and Wickham's deviousness are all incorporated and dealt with.

Thank you!

On a page-by-page basis this was a nice short read but in its entirety it was occasionally a bit elliptical and I could not necessarily follow all the character motivation or where they got their information.

This is set during the time of the Netherfield ball and afterwards. Darcy has written the Colonel a letter and got a scathing reply which enlightens him about his ungentlemanly behaviour and Elizabeth's dislike. Somewhat, anyway. Later on her feelings seem to come as a bit of a surprise again. It is unclear what Darcy wrote in his letters, such that the Colonel could tell exactly how things have been going wrong but Darcy himself didn't realize. But then Elizabeth's feelings go a bit back and forth as well. At the ball, she has been clued in that Wickham is a liar and that Bingley's devotion to Jane may be of inconstant character. This is before Bingley left for London and before Wickham's worse behaviors, so it is unclear how she knew any of that, but she addressed Darcy in a pretty civil manner, only to go back to despising him later. Even Jane expresses some thoughts indicating that she's realized that not everyone is as nice as she'd like to think, and it's not clear why.

Everything gets settled in a swift, low angst manner.
Steam level: Story stops when the wedding night starts.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. It is a Darcy and Elizabeth quick read interlude story. Fitzwilliam Darcy is dismayed, Miss Elizabeth Bennet cannot possibly despise him, can she? She has been seeking his addresses, flirting with him in her irresistible impertinent manner; but at the Netherfield ball, he has to confront the fact that his actions, no, inactions towards two men have soured her opinion of him as a gentleman, which he must rectify as soon as possible for he cannot lose her now. Elizabeth Bennet has a beloved sister to protect; and her other sisters from the possible consequences of their actions, and it’s all the fault of the impossibly handsome Mr. Darcy. How can he possibly think she admires him? So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

Short yet substantial

This is a brief novella, touching only on the significant aspects of Mr. Darcy’s and Elizabeth Bennet’s love affair. This variation mostly hinges on the more sensible, wise and straightforward manner in which our beloved couple communicated and spoke to one another: with humility and truth. They here were a welcome departure from their prideful, arrogant and doubtful counterparts in Canon. Thus, the misunderstandings and conflict between them were considerably shortened and resolved easier, especially with the help of a cousin, whose ultimate goal is to see Mr. Darcy happy and well-suited to the only woman he has ever loved.

The star deduction, this reader feels, is warranted as the story suffered due to abbreviated versions of significant exchanges and events; although in essence, the essential elements of a good Darcy/Elizabeth romance had been put in place. In other words, this reader wanted to read more, but the brevity was welcome. One cannot have her cake and eat it too, but one can highly recommend this enjoyable read.

This very short story has the colonel with almost clairvoyant perceptions as to what Darcy is doing wrong in reading letters from his cousin. He has advice for Darcy and Darcy does take a look at himself and also questions Elizabeth as to how he is perceived by the neighborhood.

There is also an earlier look at Bingley's behavior. Is he just a flirt who doesn't realize how he is setting up his "angels" for heartbreak? Elizabeth corrects Darcy's belief that Jane does not care as much for Bingley and that she is being pressured by her mother. So Darcy takes a step back there and allows Bingley to guide his own path.

The subject of Wickham comes up and in this variation Elizabeth views his story with some doubts. And she goes to Darcy with questions about that.

So ODC does work through those misunderstandings earlier than in canon.

This was a sweet little story with no angst and just a little deviation from canon.

I‘m on a journey, I have never understood why people rewrote books already written, but some, like this wonderful old classic, I can fully understand, we don’t want to let go, to let these characters go. The what if? Questions hound, and I for one am finding those what if‘s answered in wonderful ways by these amazing variation authors.

Hard to review a novella. This story could have been fuller but was compressed to make a pleasant short story. No angst was a nice change but wish had been filled out more

Short and satisfying read

This is a shorter story where Darcy early on realizes with Col Fitzwilliam’s help of his ungentlemanly manner and strives to improve it.

Back reviewing books, read in 2023. I don't have really any recollection of this one. I assume it was sweet enough.
