Cyrus the Great: An Ancient Iranian King

Rate this book
Cyrus is among the most impressive characters in the ancient world. From the Old Testament to Xenophon's Cyropaedia, ancient texts have made him to an example of tolerance and just kingship. Hailing from a small principality in southwest Iran, he rapidly rose to power, creating a world empire. The five articles included here, along with the English and Persian translation of his cylinder, provide a scholarly and readable exposition of one of the great figures of antiquity. Cyrus the Great's political career, monuments, religious practices and literary remains are all discussed in this concise and informative book.

Brand new book on Cyrus with new research from the best in the field. The book covers the life of Cyrus, the religion of Cyrus, the work of Cyrus (tablets and cylinder), the construction of his capital and other projects in his country, and a new translation of the Cyrus Cylinder. All in all the story of Cyrus remains the same, but this book adds more detail and more empirical data to the history available on Cyrus.

Enjoyed thoroughly the discussions about the Tomb of Cyrus the Great, and the overall significance of Cyrus as a humanistic King and what that means to the world, and to Judeo-Christianity. Thoroughly researched, nice pictures, and clear and straight to the point. Professor Daryaee has done an excellent job as always. Make sure you check out the Cyrus Cylinder on You-Tube.
