El Jorobado (Cuentos Oscuros)

Rate this book
Her heart’s desire would be her downfall.

After spending her life in training, Esmerelda still can’t believe she’s been appointed to serve as the Vestal of Our Lady of Paris—the greatest temple on any planet in the Nine Circles. Her beauty and unrivaled ability to manipulate energy quickly catch the attention of Praetor Frollo, the grand magistrate of Paris, and High Seraph Phoebus, the greatest winged warrior in the solar system. But her dream of becoming the consort of one of those handsome, powerful males is forgotten the moment she lays eyes upon the hunchback secretly living in the temple.

Kwazeem feels Esmerelda’s power as soon as she lands in his city. She awakens the primal energy that has lain dormant within him—and a possessive hunger that demands he claim her. But he’s a Fallen, a monster that would be destroyed on sight if the citizens of Paris discovered his existence. Worse still, Esmerelda’s Divine Light inflicts agony upon his already tortured body if he basks in it for too long. And yet…he cannot stay away from her.

With Kwazeem’s mysterious condition and Esmeralda torn between her duties to the people and the sinful desires of her heart, is there any chance of them sharing a future?

OMG!!!! I have read several of this authors books before and LOVED them, but I was still not prepared for how completely amazing and fabulous this book would be! I am familiar with the original story of the Hunchback and I was wondering how exactly she would change this one up and boy was I impressed! This was creative, captivating and off the charts wonderful. I LOVED these characters and this book is full of twists that I never saw coming. From start to finish I was hooked and I unable to put this book down. A must read book for sure!

This story is magnificent !!!!

On my Gosh !!! This book was an incredibly written story !!!! I loved it very much . It left me feeling All kinds of ways !!
I have a confession to make......
I have Never read the Hunchback of Notre Dame !!! Never even seen the cartoon, or anything !! Guess I was too busy reading smut !!! Hahaha !!

So, this is the 1st time I have read this story, and I have know way of telling how accurate it is . But I don't care !! I thought it was fabulous !!!

In this story Kwazeem, is a Hybrid Fallen ! The Fallen are ostracized by all of the cities of Paris . They used be called Light bearers or Light Eaters.
In this story it is not $$$$$ that rules the worlds, but Energy.
.In the past , hundreds of years ago A Fallen had drained a Vestal from her DivingLight , and it started a war . So , the Fallen were banished from Paris , the City of Lights.
Kwazeem has been hiding in the City for a while . His -benefator - of a sort - has , allowed him to stay in the temple hidden , always hidden. Along with being a hybrid, he also has a disfiguring hump on his back that his benefactor, Praetor Frollo ,helps him with when it become too debilitating. Kwazeem is a male of many talents, and in this particular day , he is setting up the suite of the new Vestal-- Esmeralda.
Esmeralda is an Anointed Vestal . It is Frollo's hope that she can fill their well with Light Energy. As an Annointted, she has a greater ability then just a regular Vestal. And as Paris' Vestal Well is extremely low, there is a sense of urgency .

Esmeralda has been training for this her whole life . She has an extreme amount of divine energy, and she is hoping to find a life partner from among the highest Divine Light Brings ever created, the Eloium. The High Seraph Phoebus , is the HIGHEST . And if she can catch his eye, her future will be made ! She will respond to his Divine Light , and him to hers....(Gasp\ Swoon)
But Esmeralda soon finds out that nothing goes according to plan.
As she tries to learn Why she is so attracted to the unseen "gardener" , she finds out many things about Both of them. And this attraction may very well result in Another war ? ??
This book had me crying at the universe for its treatment of "Other", and then soo happy for the two individuals who only want to be free to love each other. Laughing at the tiny Imps, and marveling at the scenery , and wishing I could smell the food and baked goods !!
As Always , Regine Abel transports me to worlds I yearn to be a part of !!!
I highly recommend this story of you want to smile and feel good .
I am Still smiling ...😁😁😁😁😁

This book was an amazing read. From the concept to the world building to its characters it was a unputdownable read that kept me guessing from start to finish.

The story is a retelling of the hunchback ( as titled ) bit with a fantastic and unexpected twist. #NoSpoilers! Read it!! You will not be disappointed.

As with all of the authors works, the characters are lifelike and realistic. The hurt, the pain and the angst is built in the pages creating a vibrant writing style that kicks the reader right in the feels!!! The relationship between Kwazeem and Frollo was brilliant...pushing the saviour/slave master dynamic to its limit. The chemistry between Mera and Kwazeem was both sweet, sultry and superb.

So much story and wordsmithingnin so few pages! I could not put it down

I loved this one, I just read it back in the day when I was still trying to hide my reading choices.

Why I think people will love:

Quasimodo gets the girl
Oh! And he’s hot
Grade A Prime Smut
Interesting take on alien/angels/other-realmers
Guy had an impressive wing span before wing spans were even cool!

I guess that if I had to pick any alien/monster writer to retell The Hunchback of Notre Dame and make a cute, insecure-monster romance, then I'd pick Regine Abel.

It delivers on all that it promises!

(One star off for me because it did go a bit heavy on the lore around the background of Esmeralda's powers and whatnot, whereas I personally wanted just more of her and Kwazeem being all sweet and cute and getting to know each other, but that's just a personal preference and doesn't at all detract from the story.)

All in all, sweet and cute and quite a good retelling!

No lie, I love new twists on classic tales. (I also love two people snowed in unexpectedly and amnesiac vampires and werewolves in all their nuded up glory, but that's another story for another time.) Kwazeem and Esmerelda take the Hunchback story and twist it up nicely.

Kwazeen is sweet and kind and mostly resigned to the lonely, isolated life he's forced to lead. Given how the Fallen are despised for...well, it's possible the citizens of Paris don't know WHY they're despised. They just are. And, yes, there are reasons, but not all those reasons apply to Kwazeem.

And let's just say Esmerelda doesn't let herself get bogged down (much) by other people's reasons. She feels Kwazeem's power and it calls to her and that's enough for her. It doesn't hurt that she's wildly attracted to his differentness, either.

Bottom line: Frollo's a jerkface, Esmerelda and Kwazeem have quality sexy times, and their, err, coupling...coupledom?...manages to change their corner of the world. EXCELLENT!

Like the title says, this is a cosmic tale based on “The Huchback of Notre-Dame”. This story keeps the main characters but changing their tragic ending for a HEA that you will love it.

Imaginative and interesting how this book keep the spirit of the original book by Victor Hugo. Esmeralda is a powerful and strong woman that will fight for her true love and her beliefs even if she has to lose what the source of her power and her the status in the society.

Our Huchback isn’t that ugly and with courage, effort and a huge heart, he will be able to face his past and find that there’s a way for him to be happy after all his suffering.

Page-turner book, entertaining and very enjoyable story that will keep you reading till the end to find out how our main characters deal with everything that life throws at them.

Like everything written by Regine Abel, this story is beautifully and wonderfully written. I totally recommend it.

Just amazing! A fairytale retelling that is so great. The author captivated me from the start and I was hooked all the way to the end. The hunchback finally has a chance for his own happily ever after. The story has a fantasy with a touch of sci-fi feel to it. The romance and love is so well written. You have a few of the characters from the original tale but the twists really bring it to life. Hidden away from everyone but he has always been watching and wishing he could be with them. She feels drawn to something or someone. The magic or light in the story seems to pull them together and at the same time pulls them apart. A romance of pure magic.

Could this author ever stop amazing me with all this great stories that come from her. Man what can I say about this story if I love the story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame I definitely love this one and with that twisted of angel like alien like tale it was a hit for me. Kwazeem and Esmeralda they didn't have it easy for him being a fallen and her the vestal of light they had to fight hard for the love they had and to get that happy ever after they so much deserve. It was definitely a great read for me and I will keep my eyes on the next cosmic fairy tales series to come.

What a wonderful example of love conquering all

What a wonderful example of love conquering all in this futuristic but still heavy fantasy adaptation of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's so very hard for me to express my opinion without giving out spoilers. Suffice it to say that in the absence of spoilers I can only say that the author was extremely talented/creative in turning a normally depressing story/tale into a much deserving HEA. This rendition was smooth and exciting in its flow turning it into an enjoyable page turner.

It’s annoying how sex-forward this story is. It could be so good but there are constant descriptions of arousal on seeing someone. Even people they aren’t supposedly attracted to are described as wearing “sexy” clothes. Ugh. Just describe the clothes! If you’re not attracted, they’re not sexy!

Sigh. It has all the elements to make a good story but it just is too something. DNF at 32%.

This is one of those books that while okay failed to stir my interest enough to want to finish it. I can't even say why that is. Sometimes books consume you and you are sucked into the world they create, other times they're just words on a page. This was one of those for me.

A Hunchback retelling with sci-fi & angelic twists

What do you get when you merge the well-known and loved characters of the Hunchback of Notre Dame with a futuristic sci-fi world? A highly entertaining twist on a classic, that’s what!

While technically part of Ms Abel’s “Dark Tales” duo, this story is a complete standalone. It’s also a shorter read (a little under 3hrs for me) so would be a great palate cleanser for someone looking for a break in a larger series, such as I was currently seeking.

I thought the world created for our hunchback here was brilliant! The story is set in a future world where space travel & technology are readily accessible, where Elohim (angels) and Fallen and humans co-exist, and where a special class of women known as Vestrals supply the energy needed to keep cities flourishing. It was this disparity of power which served as the substitute for the class struggles of the original tale. It was a lovely change!

Esmeralda, or Mera as she prefers, was a lovely, determined and fair young woman who managed to hold her own against the powerful (and by that I mean Godly-powerful) men who surround her & want to take advantage of her. Kwazeem, our hunchback, was easy to adore. Strong, powerful and with a heart of gold. Frollo was, as always, a despicable man with ulterior motives… the kind of villain you love to despise, yet in this telling even he has some (slightly) redeeming qualities.

Amazing author, outstanding story

Wow, so much better than I was expecting. This author amazes me every time a read one of her books!
Kwazeen has been hidden away all of his life because of his hunchback condition and that fact that he is one of the 'fallen".
Esmeralda is one of the people that is filled with "Divine Light" that can be emptied into a receptacle then distributed throughout the city to be used as power.
When she discovers Kwazeem and all the pain that he endures she strives to fo what ever she can to alleviate it. What happens when she falls for someone who unconsciously steals her light?

So much more than I anticipated!
I love the way Ms. Abel has taken the essence of a fairytale classic and molded it into a refreshingly new, wonder-filled story.
I admire the character of Kwazeem. Even though he’s beset with physical issues, he does physically challenging work. He takes joy in his fine craftsmanship. Kwazeem’s attraction to Esmeralda is intense. This is not a one-sided romance, Mera is just as drawn to his energy. When she has given her heart, nothing will keep her from her mate. This is a beautiful romance, with a soul-satisfying resolution.

 Don’t you dare be embarrassed about loving what you do. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Thank you for giving me this window into your world.

I don't know what I was expecting when I read this book, but alien angels and "fallen" with a star-crossed soul mates story wasn't it, but I am SO glad it's what I got!

I love Regine Abel's strong female characters and Esmeralda (Mera) was no exception. She was strong, brave, and unshakeable in her love for Kwazeem (the titular Hunchback).

I love when the FMC is willing to stare down the most powerful, god-like being and speak their truth and damn the consequences, and at the same time doesn't come across as just arrogant or stupid.

And the public declaration of love...

“I have nothing to confess. Love is not a crime. I am a free woman of the Nine Circles. I freely chose my mate and willingly accepted the consequences that might stem from it. I wasn’t trapped, tricked, or violated. If being with the man I love means being stripped of my Light, then so be it. It is my choice. Not yours, and not anyone else’s. Even knowing the consequences, I would make the same choice. I will always choose him.”

*Sigh* I loved it.

4.5 - loved it!

I love fairy tale retellings and this one did not disappoint. I was initially put off by the dismissive way the Maidens were talked about because they were “promiscuous” - but that is a really small thing that happens in like descriptive paragraphs. This was a unique retelling and I was consistently surprised by the plot twists. The worldbuilding was also really cool with an angels meets aliens meets demons kind of twist! The dialogue was a bit cheesy at times but overall I love, love, love Mera and Kwazeem’s commitment to one another. Without giving spoilers, they prove that love conquers all! I definitely recommend reading this!

Loved

The characters felt complex. Even the secondary characters. They weren't all bad or all good. They all had their own justifications whether I could agree with them they felt true to the character. And the imps are so cute. And even though I could guys where things were going I was completely drawn in.
It's been a long time since I've rooted for a couple this hard. I read the book in one sitting (there were some tense moments when my phone went off, but voicemail is a thing).
I am 100% going to be reading this book again.

I’ve quite enjoyed the story. It was a quite entertaining and relaxing read.

What I liked most was the sweetness of the love story. The characters fall in love almost instantly, and then there is not that much doubt before they accept their feelings. Sure there’s a lot of outside factors that are against them, but the story is the epitome of love conquers all. I will definitely give this author another go.

I also enjoyed very much the twist on the classic story of the hunchback of Notre Dame.
