Ten years ago I divorced my fated mated, but now, I want her back.

Lydia

Resisting a mating bond is exhausting. And I’ve been doing it for ten years.

I thought Zylas and I would be together forever, but when our son died, we took our grief out on one another and it ripped us apart.

We’ve skirted around each other since both joining the crew of The Rose, but now the captain is sending us down to explore the first habitable planet we’ve discovered.

Can my self-control hold for multiple days of close proximity with Zylas? And do I want it to?

Zylas

The last year on The Rose has stirred up a lot of memories. It’s hard to remember why Lydia and I fight our connection so hard. We’re not the same people we were ten years ago when we lost our son.

Could we make it work if we tried again?

When a lapse in control leads to a stolen kiss, I know we’ve waited long enough. I’m going to win her back.

A dangerous mission might not be the time to do it, but I can’t wait another minute.

For fans of Ruby Dixon, Michele Mills, and Petra Palerno.

“I won't have you by half measures. This isn't closure or a goodbye. I want you. Now. Always. You.”

I knew from the moment we were introduced to Lydia and Zylas that I was going to enjoy following their relationship.

It moves along quite quickly but I didn't mind here because there's already a good groundwork established for this couple. In fact, the two novellas I enjoyed the most were with couples who knew each other well beforehand, so no insta-lust or insta-love, and that's quite nice.

However, if someone had told me what was going to happen at the end, I wouldn't have believed them.

I can't believe I've only got two of the eight books left.

Really enjoyed the rekindling of Lydia and Zylas’ relationship. This specific book gave me Star Trek vibes.

I was into the premise of this book – fated mates that had split up years before find love again, but the execution is terrible. This book needs to be completely re-written. You’d think since this couple has such sad history that there would be a lot of emotional discussions, but no, all we really get is – it’s been 10 years, we’ve grown and moved beyond our trauma, let’s have sex and I love you and want to never part again. This couple lost a child, but except for some internal thoughts we get to see as readers about this child we never learn how the child died and the couple never mentions the child when talking to each other once in this book. They never address why they divorced in the first place, they never acknowledge their past behavior & ask for forgiveness or understanding, there’s no emotional depth to their relationship and they should have the most – they’ve known each other for decades! During the year on the ship before they reconciled the male character, Zylas, went on a date & kissed one of the crew and this hurt his former love, Lydia, but this is never addressed by the characters. They weren’t together when this happened, but these are feelings that need to be acknowledged before a real couple can move on. Not only that but the person he went on a date with was at least 20 years younger, which also should be talked about because I would like to know what he was thinking about when he decided to do that if I was going to be in a relationship with him.

And the ages of the couple in the book just don’t add up. They knew they were mates when they were 17 & over 20 years later Lydia says she’s never been with anyone else, which would put her around 37, but she later says she’s in her mid-40s. Most people on the ship seem to be in they mid 20s at the most & it’s stated that Lydia is about 10 years older than most of them, which again puts her in her mid-30s. I know this is a small thing, but it’s also a detail that is so easy to fix and the fact that it wasn’t bugs the crap out of me – get an editor that actually edits a book! Lydia even describes her colleague Orion as like a son to her even though Orion’s just a few years younger than her (so maybe 40 depending on if we are going with the age Lydia tells us she is or 30 if it’s the age the author describes her as being) and that’s just so weird. In the previous book Zylas’s brother said he’s only known Lydia 8 years, yet she was mated to his brother when they were 18, which was 20-30 years ago depending on what age you are using and they’ve only been divorced 10 years…so you’re telling me his brother never introduced his wife to him?

Outside of all the relationship issues that are never discussed the actual mission in this book is so dumb. First, I highly doubt that when you are a crew of 65 and only have a few medical officers your main doctor and one of her assistants would be sent on a potentially dangerous planet mission. It’s even mentioned in the book that in their absence the psychologist is left in charge of the medical center. What if the crew dies on the planet? They still have basically 7 years to survive in space with no actual doctors now? How do their scans not show that there’s giant females and males on the planet? I guess I’m too influenced by Star Trek as well, but why aren’t they trying to hide themselves from the locals at all? What if they are so primitive they freak out over seeing aliens in a spaceship & you alter the course of their lives forever? There’s zero thought about how their landing on the planet will impact the life on that planet – it’s all about what they might find, which goes the common morals of planet exploration. And the first thing she does as a leader of an expedition is play strip poker? I know these are silly books, but still – that’s not what you do. What if the team exploring the planet needed help & everyone that needs to come to their rescue is naked? And, it sounds like most of the people playing basically have 4 items of clothes on – the game’s going to be over in 5 minutes. There also seems to be no weapons to incapacitate the natives and instead Lydia and another woman are sprayed with an aphrodisiac and have to get naked & entice the men to come to them so they can get back to the ship – I found zero of that sexy.

The only thing good about this book is that it’s so short.

Listen, I don't purposely set out to read books I'll hate. I actively read reviews before picking any book up to be relatively sure that it doesn't have things I know I'll hate, yet I'm still disappointment with so many. This is another.

I was really looking forward to a second chance with older MCs who are also fated mates. Fated mates who divorced and have to deal with the constant broken bond pain while also not being able to be far from each other? In space?? That's a killer setup. I loved a different book by this author, and hoped this would be the same.

Sadly, It wasn't for me.

Right off the bat I was annoyed with the cliche events after their separation. They're fated mates and haven't been together for ten years, but have been forced to be in each other's lives because of the bond. He's of course slept around in that time. And he even dated their coworker right in her face while all of them were stuck on a ship together for the year leading up to them arriving at the planet. And all those ten years, she of course couldn't even think of wanting anyone else.

Can these authors please stop writing martyr pseudo virgin FMCs who always have only ever or will be with the MMC, and always only want the MMC after a separation, while the MMC himself has no problem sleeping with others even with a mate bond that makes him sick to do it? He couldn't cum while sleeping around though, so we're supposed to think that's sweet or something. I just call it justice. She should have gone out with other people too.

Anyway, that's a thing that's never addressed again in the book, even though she mentions how much it hurt her that she saw him and the coworker on a date together.

Stuff like this has to be addressed if the second chance is going to second chance. But they never address any of the issues that led up to their divorce either. Their son died (we never learn how), and she was in pain and needed comfort, while his pain manifested in anger, (even at her, he admits) for not joining him in his anger. None of that is addressed, they just feel like enough time has passed that they can sweep it under the rug and start anew.

And that's exactly what they do.

And I mean, this is an alien romance, right? But I still expected more from it.

The reviews I read said that there is angst and a sweet reconnection in this book, but there was only sex and the awkward asf alien strip competition that added another element to why I hated this couple's dynamic.

❌ SPOILER ❌

The conflict at the end is that an alien race of Amazon-like peoples who abduct the MMC and two others (who will the MMCs in a later book) and they become intoxicated and lured by their omega-like pheromones. The FMC and her group demand them back, but the people just infect two of their women, including the FMC, with the same pheromones and make it a competition to see who the men, who are still under the influence of pheromones, choose to sleep with. So the MMC (and the MMC of a later book) have to strip and dance to lure the men to them.
And it's hard for them!
The women are literally on the same playing field with their allure now, and the MMC is choosing between some rando and his fated mate who he's been drawn to this entire book. Yet he and the other two MMCs of the next book struggle so much to stay focused on which one to go to.

WHY IS THIS A THING RN?????

The FMC is determined not to lose her mate again, and good for her, but I got the ick from reading all of that and had to force myself to finish the last couple of chapters (because it ends abruptly shortly after that) just so that I didn't DNF another book this week.

Maybe this is supposed to be the angst?

This is the sixth book in the Rose Rising series but could be read as a standalone. I have been invested in this series because I need to find out who the Sabateour(s) are.
What are their motives for delaying The Rose from Sector 7? What are they hiding? What is their purpose?
I feel that with each book we get a closer look at them but we haven’t exactly crack the code just yet.
I really enjoyed gettin the in depth story to Lydia and Zylas.
We finally get an insight to why they avoid each other when they are mates. Love getting a closer look at the intense connection that exists between the two.
It’s interesting what can happen when you factor in forced proximity and close encounters.

I’m becoming addicted to the adventures of this starship crew! There’s a wonderful Star Trek vibe with all the smut I craved when watching the series… Masen is such a good writer and her lovemaking scenes are delicious and emotional and her characters so vivid and intriguing! And this thing of the mate bond is always so very complicated for me (meaning that I don’t get how they can choose to love each other when there’s some sort of chemical or otherworldly bond between them), but I think she explains it well. I’m really enjoying this series and even if second change is definitely not a favorite trope, I enjoyed reading about Lydia and Zylas and their heated and joyful reunion. And look forward to the next chapters!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Another book in the Rose Rising series is here!

This series has been such a fun ride. If you like quick, fun, smutty sci-fi reads: I definitely recommend checking this series out. Each book has followed a different couple and we’re slowing working through a big mystery. I feel like we’re getting closer to a big reveal and I cannot wait.

Again follows Zylas & Lydia and their second chance romance. The angst was gut clenching and I loved it. Zylas & Lydia were young mates who let their circumstances rip them apart but they still have that spark.

I love Thea’s writing and how unique each story is. She gets so creative not only with her main characters, but the characters they interact with as well. Her settings and characters are so much fun.

This- THIS is the type of story that I love. The FMC and MMC are older have have a history full of happiness, loss, and sadness. It’s made them interesting, experienced and gives them so much depth that is hard to find in characters that are under 30.

The romance and deep love that these two have for each other is like none other. Plus the spice really shows that it only gets better with age 😉

sexy, fun series.

I love this series. It’s got the fun of a mystery with all the alien, fated mates, spice. Masen does a great job of developing characters so that the developed relationship is satisfying. Highly recommend for alien spice lovers.

“I won’t have you by half measures. This isn’t closure or a goodbye. I want you. Now. Always. You.”

This was the book in the series that I waited oh so patiently for and Thea made it worth the wait.

First of all, loved the ages of the MCs. We need more grown ass adults in their 40s and 50s finding love. One thing I’ve struggled with after turning 30, hell, even after turning 28, is that I’m now older than most of the MCs I read about. That is depressing, not only because of aging, but because it makes it feel like after a certain age, the magic is gone and your definitely not as desirable anymore. And, while I know that isn’t true, it still hits.

Man, that was a rant I didn’t mean to get on but, it holds validity so, I’ll keep it 😂

Anyways, middle aged rekindling of a love that was broken due to traumas that life brings, really did it for me. Plus, it’s an alien romance where the alien’s c*m is an aphrodisiac that makes you feel drunk. Thea checked all my boxes ✅

I’m going to look back on this review and cringe at myself since I was highly inebriated while typing it 🙃 maybe I should do this more often.
