I earned the captaincy fair and square, but Caden Jones doesn’t see it that way. He’s challenging my authority at every turn and bringing discord to the team that’s held together with duct tape and hope.
Caden is set to ruin our chances this year just to show everyone what a terrible leader I am.
Besides, he’s been preoccupied with kissing guys all semester long. Not that I have a problem with that, exactly. But does he have to do it right under my nose?
An out-of-state game has us stranded in a hotel room. While that’s annoying as hell, the final straw is the mix up that leaves us with only one bed.
Years of rivalry and quiet resentment finally come to boiling and one of us isn’t leaving this hotel room alive. Until big words are said. And crazy actions taken. And we’re no longer fighting, even if it sort of looks like a wrestling match.
Turns out, I’ve got no problem with Caden kissing guys when I’m the guy he kisses. But… I’m straight, right?
Big Stick Energy is the third book in Hayden Hall’s Arctic Titans of Northwood U series of gay, college hockey romance novels. Expect fiery encounters on and off the ice, bisexual awakening, heated rivalry, and the emotional rollercoaster of self-discovery, acceptance, and growth into adulthood. Big Stick Energy can be read as a standalone.
4.5⭐️ I am in a major reading and reviewing slump but I knew I could trust Hayden to help me out with the reading part.
This lightweight, animosity to lovers, college hockey romance hit just right. This might be Hayden’s hottest book yet and reminded me why I love MM romance so much.
On the road hotel shenanigans FTW!
Side note: I feel like I was supposed to be siding with Caden in this one but really it was Beckett who made me swoon.
they hate each other, just being in the same room aggravates them…….then some magic switch is flipped and they’re fucking and it’s the first time and immediately it’s like “i’ve been waiting for him my whole life” and “he was all mine” and “my boy” and the hatred has just vanished, no talking or anything, they just fucked and now they’re zoned into each other 100% and already thinking they’re falling in love the 2nd time they fuck lmaooo like ????…..i just have to giggle like 🙄 okay…..whatever u say…………
also WHY did the coach choose to make beckett the captain??? not once did i ever feel like the coach had a real reason for it other than pulling his name outta his ass and saying fuck it, beckett for captain it is…..beckett showed no leadership skills, no mentoring skills, barely any people skills, didn’t have the backing from the team, and apparently all he did before being chosen for captain was fuck around, show up late, party, and not take shit seriously……like WHO, pls tell me, pls, WHO is choosing that guy for captain when you have caden, an excellent, hard working player who successfully assistant captained last year ??!!! he’s got the experience, the drive, the respect of his teammates and he can actually encourage and mentor his teammates (like asher during the final game) like…..make it make sense!!!!!!!!! truly upsetting😭😭 like at least if beckett’s nhl star of an uncle actually used his influence to get him the captaincy, it would have made sense………not to mention, at the end everyone is saying he deserved the captaincy like ????? excuse me, i will not be gaslit!!!!!
the “i’m in love with you” confession scene was high cinema, giving very much 2000s cheesy rom com dramatics…….it was also giving book 1😬…..now, i didn’t read the first book in this series, but ik enough about it to see that the similarities are there and they’re LOUD ! like bickering teammates that hate each other✅ one of em is the captain✅ can’t get along to the point of hurting the team dynamic✅ enemies fucking themselves into lovers✅ kissing on the ice after a game✅ like new material pls????💀
unforch, i could not look away and was bewitched into finishing…….will i read the next installment??? almost certainly……i forsee disappointment, but my mind was tricked into being curious enough about the next potential pairings……like jordan and asher, step bros to lovers pls!!!

The only energy this was giving was mediocre at best. It felt like a badly constructed twin of Iced Out — hockey teammates with a rivalry for captain and who hate each other for the dumbest reasons.
The writing was so boring and filled with a lot of inner monologues that made it difficult to enjoy the story. The dialogues were overly-cheesy and the spice, or what I managed to read of it, was unemotional and jumped right to what I believe should usually be the finale. You’re seriously going to make me sit through 100 pages of what was basically filler just for them to fuck right away, with the baby-bi bottoming from the get-go?
Yeesh, no thanks.

There is an enemies-to-lovers trope and then there are Caden and Beckett who took the trope to a whole different level! I liked this book, it was a bit slow at the beginning, but eventually it picked up and I enjoyed it very much. Caden wanted to be captain of his ice hockey team, but then the position was given to Beckett and he didn't take it well. They'd been enemies since they first met, although it seemed it had all come from a misunderstanding, kind of. Beckett wanted to prove he had what it was needed to be captain. His uncle was a big ice hockey star, whom he was always compared to. Caden had worked very hard to get the position and felt betrayed by his coach and his dislike of Beckett grew bigger. Sharing a bed in an away game changed many things and the truth about their heated rivalry came out. Like I said, it took me a while to get into the story. Caden and Beckett were always going at each other and sometimes for the most absurd things. I just wanted them to get over themselves and see the reality of their feelings. When they did, the story improved so much. I loved how they got to know each other and I especially liked how Beckett accepted Caden was the person for him. He didn't care about labels, only that he wanted to be with Caden. I liked this book, it was nice to see these two enemies falling for each other and how their relationship evolved. Their story was steamy, but also sweet and I also loved their teammates and their comments. It was a very enjoyable and wonderful read and I can't wait for the next book in this series.
“You’re just another hot fuckboy, Partridge.” … “Then you’re this fuckboy’s toy, Jones,” I said against the hickey that glowed an angry red on his neck. ARC Review~
Rivals to lovers with a heap of *emotions* and steam 🥵👌🏻
Caden expects to be made captain but when Beckett is inexplicably chosen over him it sends him into a spiral. He decides to embrace his freedom by exploring his sexuality the way he’s always wanted to but never felt able. Turns out Beckett hates seeing him with other guys but not for the reason some might think.
I loved the development of their relationship and Beckett’s cluelessness about his own feelings/behaviour towards Caden. Once they finally got to know each other and work as a team it was magic. Loved this one, Hayden is really nailing it with this series 😍
Um. What was that epilogue? Not that I'm opposed to an entire chapter of sex it's just... There's not really much else to tell you where the are. They are still together. They share a room. They are still happy. But honestly it was mostly a sex scene. It basically took away one star because I couldn't wait for it to be over.
I had reaaaaal mixed emotions about this book.
There were scenes that I honestly like, four stars loved. But then there were others where I was like, this is a 3 star book. There was also just so much going on with side characters (like the stepbrothers) that I'm assuming will be another book. If not then it was just a distraction I guess? It definitely detracted from the story.
The audiobook this time was much better than the last where the narrator made the "geek" sound like a freaking nasal idiot instead of a genius. I'm still bitter about that, especially after hearing the narrator do two separate (non annoying voices) just fine. Will I continue the series? Yes. There were honestly some real REAL moments in here which as a reader I appreciated. So yeah, conflicting emotions. :/
But overall I really like Hayden Hall's books. I think he brings something unique to queer storytelling that is missing in other books. I can't quite articulate it...that's just how I feel :)

A MM college romance with hockey players & enemies to lovers! I had so much fun with this. I had some reservations but I was excited & this turned out to be worth it. Loved Caden & Beckett! I devoured this in 7hs, the #ARC a great way to spend my Sunday 🥰. That's a saucy (but true) title 😜.
Caden's rule follower while Beckett's a risk taker. One shy other essentially a fuckboy, both hate eachother. Beck becoming captain, something Cade desperately wanted escalates all. Intense! Their bickering was exactly what I wanted to see haha. The ultimatum & 'em trying to be friends was hilarious, tho kinda sad.
Then there are that feelings of attraction, obvious for Cade while manifesting in Beck as jealousy & cockblocking, Bi-awakening! That waited hotel room, only one bed scene was amazing!! I loved to see how soft they were with each other 🥰, despite fucking the anger out 🥵.
The points where I felt the similarity b/w this & the 1st book was the hatred, some time jumps, & secrecy. I really liked the progression with Beck & Cade tho, it fully felt like their story. As the characters also recognized the similarities, heh.
Their chemistry is hot as it builds, the vers action & first times are sexy 😍🔥. The last chapters got me emotional, I loved the resolutions & realisations! Awesome ending & epilogue!! I'm excited for what's next, love me a forbidden romance 😏. RTC.
In spite of the diction that has two college hockey players sounding like college professors majoring in romance, the enemies-to-lovers trope succeeds. And if you're a fan of hate sex (I am!), this one should definitely work for you.
5 stars This was good, very very good. I think it's my favourite of the series. It is more similar to the first one, with all the anger between the MCs.
I didn't like Beckett at all in the previous books, especially every time he teased Riley about Cameron and I was very curious about him and how his story would evolve. Hayden Hall did an amazing job with him, showing us his insecurities, his fears and I think he portrayed extremely well his sexual awakening. Caden is also unsure and scared: his past experiences weren't good and they left a lot of uncertainties. But Caden was also so brave in telling Beckett what he needed and what he couldn't do. He deserved happiness and he was not afraid to seek it, even if he broke his own heart.
There are very hot moments between them, but their encounters are also full by many overwhelming feelings. Beckett's pov of his first time was really emotional. Seeing these two falling in love has been a pleasure and I really appreciated how they became more mature and started to fit into each other's lives. Talking about feelings wasn't easy, especially for Beckett who had to face a new part of himself, but luckily there was no miscommunication. I surely did not expect for Beckett to be such a sweet talker.
It seemed something was up with Jordan and his stepbrother Asher. We'll see if they'll be the MCs of the next book.
In the meantime, I very much recommend this book.
I received an ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.
Caden is outrageous when the coach named Beckett as the new captain of the Arctic Titans. It should have been Caden, not Beckett. They can’t stand each other, Caden will not bow to Beckett, and Beckett can’t seem to get him to do so. Caden is gay, and the comments thrown his way by Beckett are like oil to the fire. The hate is building and building, the team suffers, intervenes, and makes a hard point.
Ghaawd imagine all the anger between them. Two strong guys fighting to stay on top of the other. And now… they have to share a room with one bed.
I loved this read, it felt honest, real, and all with a natural flow. The emotions were strong and palpable. Slowly feelings are coming into the right perspective. They are so hot together. Overall a strongly written, very attractive story, with all the feels, with my favorite tropes, enemies to lovers and close proximity, and… the lovers of sports will love it too!!
We were like two boys who stood too close to a firecracker when it went off—a sliver of fear followed by immense relief and amusement.
I had a lot of the same issues here as I did with book 1 in this series. The animosity and tension between them just felt forced, like the author was just looking for something to create “hate” so it could fit the trope to turn into love, but it took up 50% of the book At around the 80% mark (right before the break) there’s somewhat of a reason given about why Beckett had such of an attitude and supposedly it was a misunderstanding but didn’t quite really fit the tenor of their anger 🤷🏻♀️
After the back and forth between them abruptly ended when they had to share a hotel room, Beckett’s finally realized what he felt was jealously because he wanted Caden, and hated that he couldn’t have him (because he was straight). From there they start a really hot and heavy secret relationship, although though they don’t call it that. These guys are insatiable 🤭
If anger had inspired the best sex of my life, I wasn’t sure what to feel. But if the best sex of my life managed the anger I carried, I had no plans to stop.
If there’s one thing about Hayden, it’s that his spice scenes are always pretty good and the second half is filled with them. Although by the epilogue I probably could have done without. 🙈
Real feelings develop and eventually Caden realizes he’s in so deep with Beckett but can’t go back in the closet and Beckett isn’t ready to come out so it’s the age old self preservation trope of “I love you, but I love myself more than to hide who I am” which completely made sense. So while there a break and it’s sad, because these guys did have true feelings, I appreciated that it wasn’t a miscommunication break. It wasn’t necessarily goodbye forever, Caden was giving Beckett time to think. And it didn’t take Beckett too long to realize that he just could live without Caden and makes a big gesture to let him know that. It was a little cheesy, but also really sweet at the same time 🫶
There was more to gain if I played my cards right. Caden waited on the other side of this equation. And if that was my prize, maybe some things simply needed to be lost. If there was a choice to be made, I needed to choose the right one.
I won’t give up on this author, but I think I may need to find a different trope other than E2L to see if I like the storytelling better.
"His sweet lips pressed against mine, and I knew so clearly that I had been waiting for him my whole life. I had been waiting for this."
Caden and Beckett's romance sure started on rocky footing. I love a good enemies to lovers trope and these two would definitely be classified as enemies. In fact, their animosity towards one another was so great that their entire hockey team family got fed up enough to slap these two with an ultimatum: Work shit out or peace the fuck out. Talk about pressure.
I worried about Caden. He was such a sweet guy and losing the coveted captaincy spot sort of sent him into a tailspin. It caused him to lash out and Beckett was his target. Beckett being Beckett of course had no problems baiting Caden right back which led to a lot of their issues. However, it turns out that Beckett's issue with Caden was not what he originally suspected, and it wasn't until their fiery first kiss that he started to figure that out. The problem with his realization of his feelings? Caden had worked hard on himself to be out and proud. Being with Beckett would mean going back into a closet and that is just not something he thinks he could do.
I'll never be that important to you...I'll never be good enough that you're not ashamed of it."
These two definitely had to work at it. They had a past that was littered with hurts against the other. But their chemistry was too good to ignore and both had to make some decisions before they could move forward with anything resembling a real relationship. I was proud of Caden for standing his ground and also for Beckett for finding his courage. It was much needed in order for these two jocks to get their true HEA.
✅Enemies to Lovers ✅First times/Awakening ✅Hot Hot Hot 🔥
My favorite couple so far in this series, hands down! These two proved just how fine the line is between love and hate. I had my doubts as to how they would actually work through all that animosity but Hayden Hall proved me wrong. The relationship build was as intense as it was heartfelt, even though these guys started out as blood and thunder they slowly build something really beautiful. They were both hard headed and explosive which made their intimate scenes sexy AF but the closer they get they also share a vulnerability with each other that is insanely adorable and leads to a very sweet HEA... I was so here for it. The side characters in this series are great and I cannot wait to see what's next, bring on Jordan and Asher. I absolutely recommend this book it was sexy, sweet and a lot of fun to read.
* I received an ARC from GRR, this is my open and honest review *
GFY and/or bi-awakening often don't work for me because they're just so unbelievable, but this was a good example of how this trope can be used and still provide a good story. Beck and Caden were a great couple, and the enemies-to-lovers aspect of the story was done very well, also. It reminded me of something in my own past, when I had an attraction to someone that was very strong, but when I realized it wasn't going to happen, I began to shun and just hate the guy in question. It's a coping mechanism, for sure, and not mentally healthy, but there ya go.
As usual in this series, the sex scenes were so well-written and the emotional component to the story was poignant and moving.
I hope there are more books in this series, as Hall seems to have developed an entire team of gay and heteroflexible players. lol.
A bit strangely written (overly formal, I guess is the best way to describe it?) but entertaining enough. There are a few mentions of guys (e.g. one of the MCs) feeling faint at the thought of their lover, LOL, which I find to be a particularly Bodice Ripper choice of phrase. But it's entertaining enough. I haven't read the first two but I might.
Volgens mij is het verplicht om te negeren hoe de man op de cover eruit ziet. Ik wou meer uitleg geven over het boek maar de ijskar is te luid buiten en ik kan me niet concentreren.
About: Rivals to lovers hockey romance. Caden and Beckett have hated each other since they became teammates, and now Beckett has been made Captain when Caden thought it was going to be him. When their tension threatens the team dynamic, they're forced to either get along or get off the team. A little fake friendship, forced proximity and only one bed and they start to realize their passion can bring them together as much as it pushed them apart.
My thoughts: Hayden Hall continues his streak of absolutely dominating my 5 star books. This is such a delicious enemies to fake friends to lovers. What I like best about it is how much character growth there is for both MCs. Real talk, in Patreon chapters I told Hayden I was dubious about him bringing Beckett around to me. I was absolutely team Caden to start and the way Beckett acted in regards to Caden's sexuality made me see red.
Sure enough though, he shows us Beckett's soft spots, his fears and motivations, and little by little, as Beckett grows in maturity, my affection for him did, too. As does Caden's XD
The spice in this one is absolute fire- gotta love hate sex where the top still makes sure the bottom is safe and enjoying it, while absolutely wrecking them. That dichotomy of rough, hateful to gentle care just does it for me.
And then of course, when they finally admit feelings, it's everything.
No criticism of this one. 10/10, joins the first two in the series in living rent free in my head. You don't need to read them to enjoy this book, but I highly recommend it. Both are 5 star reads and the build up of how much Beckett and Caden dislike each other in the previous books only adds to the impact of their story
Tropes: 💙 Enemies to lovers 💙 Teammates 💙 Bi awakening 💙 One bed 💙 Hockey
(EN) Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes and when they are well written, as it is here, they are a real joy to read. Caden and Beckett can't see each other; it's not just dislike, they really hate each other and when all that tension explodes it's incredible to read. They are two beautiful characters and the author describes so well all the changes they go through as a couple and in their individualities. Let's keep in mind that Beckett's bi awakening is literally a slap in the face…. he's going to have a long way to go. I’m loving this series!!!! And I already want to read the next book which has another of my favorite tropes. I received an advanced copy of this book from GRR and am voluntary leaving my review.
Be Careful of the Big Stick Energy when Playing Hockey Together.
When rivalry over being not Captain stresses Caden over not being selected by the Coach after being Assistant Captain the previous year, the constant harassment by the Captain enhances the stress and destroys the teamwork and skills of many players.
Rumors about the selection of Captain combined with the personality of the choice cause disconnect and distractions for the team, but only Caden seems to stand up for what is right in spite of complete disagreement.
But events lead to discoveries that cause changes made in secret as the situation slowly improves until a special match up with rivals forces and end to secrets.
This one brought tears to my eyes Enemies- to- lovers but in the sense that “I’m attracted to you and I don’t know what to do with it” + the one-bead trope in an MM romance??? Sign me the fuck up baby
________ I know all too well how it feels to put effort into something and have somebody else that “may” deserve it (cause everyone deserves good things) but not have put as much effort as you have into it get it instead. It’s painful, it just makes you feel like you’d never quite be “enough” no matter what and quite frankly I felt Caden’s pain on another level.. I was like oh! is this fucking play about us???! But with Caden and Beckett, I feel like it was important to see that not all their differences were because of the captaincy… in fact when It came down to it, that was the least of their problems. The Bi-awakening in this was written so well.. all the emotions and fear and the unknown sexuality labels.. I felt all the emotions coming of this characters in waves and it honestly shocked me because 1) I can hardly relate, 2) I don’t remember when last a college romance put me through the wringer quite like this one. Don’t even get me started on the confessions of love when it came down to it like I always knew the fighters are better lovers because of all the love confessions in this series, Beckett’s takes the cake! When Caden’s eyes brimmed with tears at his words? By the stars I couldn’t keep my own eyes dry too.. when they said “I love you” I felt that shit biblically and if you read my reviews, you’ll know that’s my favorite thing about romance books.. yes I want to feel what you feel. Ughh I just love them🫶🏼🫶🏼

As usual there is no homophobia, no hate from teammates, love from guardians and parents and I love the mirror this story was to Riley and Cameron’s relationship from the first book.
Now this one had it all! The tension.. The spice.. The somewhat degradation.. The anger & animosity.. phew it was all there!
I never ever expected this book. Caden I got but Beckett, yeah not me. We love a "only for you" trope and this one hit it every time and left no crumbs behind!
I honestly wasn't sure were this would go, I loathed Beckett in the first 2 books. Now I got a peek at him and can understand from book 1 where it all came from. Living in the shadow in the sense of someone is a tough spot to be and proving yourself is a whole other ball game that sometimes hurts in the long run. Caden had me in my feels from the beginning but also from book 1. In this one it is almost like he is lost without Riley. I had some good laughs through his POVs and the parts towards Beckett had me so wrapped up in it. These two together, EXPLOSIVE! I never ever expected these two to get together and I was smiling and giddy throughout until like always someone goes and messes it up. I teared up because it was what we all want when we find our person, they just maybe don't want the same things we do.
These hockey players have me in a web, I don't want to leave until I get all their stories!
although i know caden can’t just become captain in the middle of the season, i was sad to see the year play out as him basically being the assistant captain when he was clearly made for it!
there’s background info on the two of them so it’s technically better than the other two but they were kind of boring but in a good way.
beckett was a coward from the beginning until the end. caden had bad timing but he did what he thought was best for himself and i don’t blame him. if you want something you need to want all of it not just at a certain time.
i feel bad for uncle nate whatever his story is, times were different, he may have his regrets but i hope he can find peace and happiness!
i can’t wait to figure out what jordan and asher’s problem is and i’m really ready to read about sebastian and tyler bc they’re the only reason why i’m reading this series
I am obsessed! Like 1000% obsessed with this book, it was soooooo good! The best one so far. I was not expecting to love Beckett as much as I did as we previously met him in past books but found I loved him the most. Their chemistry was of the charts and you could tell early on there was more to it then a dislike for each other. And when they do finally get together it's fire.. Although when they argue it's kinda like that aswell. It's a great book. Best read in a few months 5* Oh and am so looking forward to the next one! I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
I enjoyed the first two books in this college hockey series, so I wasn't surprised I enjoyed the the third one. It's a real, full-on enemies-to-lovers romance, with plenty of tension that takes a while to resolve, given that one of the MCs thinks he's straight and doesn't realize how much of that tension is sexual. There's plenty of steam here, but it still takes a while to resolve the issues that pitted the two against each other. I appreciated the pacing of the relationship. The MCs grow up a lot during the story, which is what you'd hope would happen with college-age characters, and I was satisfied with how everything worked out. 4.5 rounded up.
