This webtoon had so much potential!! I was so excited, but the ending was kinda rushed (i don'tknow why the "devil" made so many bets (and losing) only to end up doing another one (what was the point of everyonegetting out) ? Idk- I didn't feel like the ending was worth everything they went through (yes I loved how original the idea of escaping to the real world + using digital images) but it was hella off- Like I know they escaped ro the real world + now they have new identities... but the author didn't even show the TRANSITION??? am I supposed to live without knowing what happened to RINA?😔

THE ENDING WAS SO WORTH IT. LIKE, THE ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS, IDEA WAS SO SMART, AND I AM SO GLAD EVERYONE WHO WANTED TO GET OUT COULD GET OUT (Except green hair lady who I have forgotten the name of. I'm glad she also got the ending she wanted, even if it was to stay inside the story.). I AM SO SAD THAT THIS WEBTOON ENDED, I CANNOT WAIT TO READ SOMETHING ELSE BY THIS AUTHOR T_T

I legit thought it was a romance I was getting into but I got pulled into the most horrifying thriller.

I read this on the WebToon app - big recommend to download.
This is the app flashing in my face at 1 AM. I'm not a perfect woman, okay.
The ending of Surviving Romance, while not perfect, was far and away worth the read.
Lee Yeon challenged the media used to create this, blending in different styles and mediums that backed the story being told and were beautiful to look at.
Every character was utilized and given their own story enough that you not only connected with them, but want more even after the story has ended.
And that ending - what a fantastic message to end on.
To quote a brilliant line from an okay movie here: "...the sweet is never as sweet without the sour..."*
And how sour those chapters leading up to the ending were, which not only served to make the payoff that much sweeter, but was even thrown in the readers' face to challenge what we ask for in what we read.
Which is also double-sided and leads to my gripes.
The condescension in which the subverted tropes are thrown at the reader. We aren't given the space to pick out these subversions ourselves, because they're made plain as day. They're turned inwards on the reader to say: 'This is what the story is ending on because the readers want this. You can end two or three chapters earlier and suck it, because that could be the reality. Life isn't roses and sunshine'.
Sure, okay, but we don't need to be told that. None of us are picking up a fantasy story about a girl with pink hair to get even more of a dose of reality than we already do. There's no need to remind anyone about that.
And more problematic, the unexplained plot-holes.
I just want answers...
Despite its misgivings, I would recommend this series wholeheartedly, and also urge readers to read Lee Yeon's Afterword in full for the true feel-good ending, as well as some additional context.

5 estrellas, 100 estrellas porque no hay una manera de medir el amor que siento por esta historia.
Sinopsis~La novela gráfica relata la historia de Chaerin quien tras haber reencarnado como la protagonista de su novela de romance favorita tiene la vida que siempre ha querido, a pesar de los dificultades. Es entonces cuando llega por fin el día en el que su interés amoroso, Yeha, se le va a declarar y la historia finalmente tomará el rumbo de una novela romántica-dramática. Sin embargo, la historia no está siguiendo su curso original pues comienza un apocalipsis zombie en la escuela de los personajes.
Trama~ Creo que es de las historias con el desarrollo de trama más original que he leído, realmente tiene muy bien planificado el rumbo y es perceptible por los plot twists. No quisiera hacer spoilers pero la manera en que se introducen los personajes, los conflictos y desafíos a superar, el sistema del universo creado por la autora está bien delimitado y de igual manera explicado a los lectores, te van soltando la información poco a poco y lo que abre un espacio para que el lector vaya desarrollando sus propias teorías.
Tiene un gran ritmo, en el sentido de que siempre están pasando cosas y la protagonista tiene un objetivo claro por lo que el lector lo único que imagina son las posibilidades de desarrollo, siempre hay una intriga e interés por seguir.
En lo personal amo el recurso de romper la cuarta pared entonces al ser este un libro de metaficción creo que se lleva de manera increíble. Está bien conformado el universo de los libros aquí con sus reglas claras
Dibujos~Se aprovechan perfectamente los recursos visuales, al ser una historia con un gran apoyo en la metaficción el intercalar los dibujos con fotografías del mundo real te sumerge por completo en la novela.
No pensé que algún día encontrará un webtoon que me hiciera sentir y fascinarme como lo hizo este. Hay simplemente tantas cosas que quisiera decir de esta historia pero en primera no recuerdo todo y webtoon no es muy accesible para releerlo y por otra parte creo que no terminaría.

Same review for the entire series: such a fantastic webtoon. Spoilers ahead. This has a little bit of everything in terms of themes and genres. A really compelling read, and fantastic drawings. This author is continuing to be one of my favourite webtoon authors. Has such a fantastic way of playing with story, but never makes things trite or playing with genre just for the sake of being subversive. Always feels grounded in a well crafted plot, and considered characters. The characters in this are maybe a little less well-rounded than in The Make-up Remover. It isn’t irritating though, and makes sense for this story as we don’t ever fully get to see who they are outside of their roles. We do get to see the start of them developing their personalities, and it’s nice knowing that they will get to continue that journey. There are also soo many characters, and this story is quite plot based and concept based - so I really think it’d get too confusing if we did a deep dive into each and every character anyway. Annnyway - too stuff!

Empecé a leer esta historia en Webtoon a principios de año. Confieso que, en aquel entonces, estaba obsesionada con ella, y soy honesta, estaba realmente OBSESIONADA. Me encantaban los personajes, la historia, el dibujo y el mensaje. No podía dejar de pensar en este webtoon, se lo conté a una de mis amigas, convulsionado de emoción, y soñaba despierta con leer más. Sin embargo, tengo un problema: soy mala leyendo cosas en emisión. Simplemente evito leer cosas no concluidas, porque si no lo leo seguido la emoción pasa y comienzo a olvidar cosas, porque tengo una terrible memoria. Tristemente para mí, este fue el caso. Los últimos capítulos no fueron tan geniales para mí ya que estaba emocionalmente desconectada de la obra. No obstante, le tengo un cariño muy especial. Hay personajes realmente memorables (como mi amada Rina) y estoy feliz de haber leído esto y que haya tenido un final bastante satisfactorio.

Immersive till the end! Absolutely loved the concept, the art, and the message at the end. I can't believe after reading 1-2 episodes and seeing the zombies, I was close to giving up on this series.
Guess my willpower to see a happy ending pushed me till the end, and made it possible for the devil's defeat 😉

The ending kinda took me out of it a little bit but also Jihyeon and shorty are end game. That’s all I’m gonna say. Oh and soooo happy for Rina😭
All jokes aside the attn to detail in the yearbook pages I think was my fave part (Rina getting 2 lil hearts 🥰) I think it reflected the characters and their recognition very well. A really well done manhwa.

Un webtoon muy bueno que leí en junio del año pasado y terminó sus dos temporadas, terror, reflexión, de todo. El final lo sentí un poco apresurado y algo confuso, pero luego se entiende mejor.
