Everyday during their time together at ‘Waitress the Musical’, David (as Dr Pomatter) would hand Lucie (as Jenna) a prescription for prenatal vitamins featuring a silly little doodle about whatever was happening at the time. Lucie kept every single of one of them and they lined her dressing room wall at The Adelphi Theatre until the show closed in March 2020.
“They’ve lived in a little box ever since. But now the best of the doodles will appear in a brand new book, alongside Lucie and David’s favourite backstage stories and secrets.
Anyone who knows me knows how much Waitress the Musical means to me. This show stole my heart from the first time I saw in back in 2019. 20 August 2023 marked a whole year since the tour ended in Norwich (I’m still not ready to talk about it) and I thought it was the perfect time to pick up this book to commemorate the occasion.
The book centres around drawings that David Hunter, as Dr Pomatter, drew for Lucie Jones, as Jenna H(B)unterson, throughout their time together in the show. I was so lucky to see them opposite each other several times in the West End, and then with other actors on the tour. You could always tell that these two had a special chemistry and it shows in the book.
The drawings are so sweet, covering everything from welcome back notes to little inside jokes. I learnt new behind the scenes stories from the show that I never knew before (including the creepy toddler doll understudy for Lulu - which luckily I never saw).
There are also diary entries from each of them - from learning that Waitress was transferring to the West End to each of their respective castings. David’s diary entries from his return to the tour and then from the final night of tour were particularly poignant. He was the only cast member to be on stage at both the opening of the show on the West End and the closing show on tour and he really is part of the fabric of the show for me. Likewise, Lucie’s Jenna was always spectacular. The opening night of tour will always remain in my memory as one of the best portrayals of the character I ever saw.
The book wasn’t very long and a lot of the content is the drawings, so it was a very quick and nostalgic read. I think I would have liked a few more stories as the content felt lacking in places. But there is no doubt this book has filled the pie-shaped hole in my heart that has now been there for a whole year now. Pie show I miss you.
A hilarious look into the world of two incredible actors David Hunter and Lucie Jones as they share their journey, friendship and doodles whilst working on the best musical ever created (I’m bias it’s my fave) Waitress.
I think my favourite part of this whole book is how genuine it all feels, sometimes you read a book about the people that wrote it and they don’t feel genuine or you can’t feel the connection between them. This one you can literally feel the essence of David and Lucie, you can feel how deeply rooted their friendship goes and you can also feel how meaningful and important Waitress was to both of them. That was my favourite part of this whole book.
This was hilarious from literally the first line David wrote, it continued to be hilarious throughout. I adored all the edits Lucie put in getting her say on what David was talking about. It made it even funnier in parts. I really enjoyed reading about their process getting the job on the show, seeing into their personal journals and finding out how much they wanted to play these parts.
I really enjoyed seeing all the doodles and my goodness did they make me laugh. How did you have time to draw some of these in such a short time? I loved them and spend time looking at each one and reading the story behind some of them. What a great way to add something different to a scene and to build up a friendship. I loved them so much.
This book was perfect; honestly and greedily though I wish there was more I could keep reading about this friendship, looking at all the doodles David gave Lucie and just be happy.
I’m so genuinely happy I got a chance to own a copy and to read it, it’s one I will read again as it brings a huge smile to my face, connects me to my favourite show and makes me laugh so much. It was so creatively, lovingly and dedicatedly made and it is exactly what the Doctor’s Orders.
This is the cutest little retelling of Lucie & David’s experience working on Waitress the Musical in the West End. It has so much detail and depth, and gives such a special look into behind the scenes of one of my favorite shows. 10/10
