Paranormal buffs will find this book of great interest.

The reader explores various well known asylums, sanatoriums, prisons and institutions for the insane. You read of the history of these locations, rumored hauntings while the author researches what spirits and/or activity lurks. Each chapter focuses on a specific location, provides extensive background history. Ending each chapter is a detailed summary on specifics of the site along with information in the event the reader would like to visit and do their own paranormal investigation. Also included is the research findings the team stumbled upon through their experience.

The book is well written in an informal manner as if you’re with the tour group, information is precise and intriguing. Wonderful collection of photographs throughout the book. The experiments tracking the spirits were ambiguous, not really concrete (my opinion) but enough to whet your appetite to seek more of the supernatural.

A paranormal travelogue with information on access and specifics of each location, cost, airports, contact information all contained for your pleasure.

I’m not a paranormal expert by any means, however, I felt this book was a wonderful way to initiate further reading, research, and organizing of a field trip to see for yourself of the offerings of these mysterious institutions. Great read for a newbie ghost hunter.

Haunted Asylums, Prisons, and Sanatoriums: Inside Abandoned Institutions for the Crazy, Criminal & Quarantined is a travel guide that gives insight and information, as well as personal experiences within some of America's most haunted places.

----

In a nutshell, this is a good starter book for someone with an interest in haunted places mentioned in the title. This is also a good guide for people who are interested in planning a vacation to these locations.

+ The author does a good job explaining techniques and equipment that are commonly used in paranormal investigation. It's put into simple terms so even the most unfamiliar reader can understand what's being used throughout the book.

+ There are small stories and histories associated with each place. These are more factual than urban legend, despite how the back blurb of this book reads. There are photographs peppered throughout the book that help the narrative and show the reader a glimpse of what to expect.

+ It was useful to me that included after each landmark/haunt, there was a list of prices, websites, and additional information that the reader can use if planning to visit.

- The author also tells stories from their own paranormal investigations. In my opinion, these came off as rather unprofessional and altogether a bit lacking in evidence.

- I also felt like I was left with only an introduction to each haunt. I've researched most of these places in my spare time, since I do want to visit a few of them in the future. Because of that, I didn't really gain any additional information. Most of these facts can be found online, and don't really require this book to learn them.

All in all, I'd recommend this for travelers or newcomers to the topic. If you have no intention to visit these places, expect a ghost story, or are a relatively well versed person in regards to haunted places, then this book isn't for you.

Thank you to Netgalley and Llewellyn Worldwide, Ltd. for my copy. This review can also be found on my blog, Bitches n Prose.

Wow, did I expect more from this book. The thought of hearing all about haunted asylums, prisons, and sanatoriums made me internally squeal with anticipation. Those are places that are scary enough when filled with the living--who knows what kind of dead would be contained inside. I'd still like to read a book about those places, because this book really did not deliver.

My main problem was the writing, which was very poor. For a book from a well-established publisher, I would have hoped that there would have been much more editing. Davis tries to express her enthusiasm for everything she has done and seen. Sadly, however, exclamation points do not equal exciting writing. The words and sentences themselves need to convey that, not a piece of punctuation.

I had also hoped there would have been more of an emphasis on the history of the sites visited. The bulk of the book gives a play by play of Davis and Queen's experiences doing ghost hunting in these places. I don't find that sort of thing interesting on television, and I find it even more dull in writing. Page after page includes transcriptions from "flashlight sessions," where Davis and Queen ask some spirit questions and hope that a flickering flashlight will indicate an answer. Unlike a Ouija board, there are no letters to spell out independent thoughts. It's entirely up to the living to create a narrative and interpret the answers. In court, this kind of questioning would be called leading the witness. It might be fun for Davis and Queen, and they're entitled to their fun, but it makes for a pretty lame book. After a while, I started just skipping these sections entirely, which made the book fly by.

Possibly the only worthwhile part of this book was the section of each chapter that outlines ghost hunting parameters and costs for each of the locations. If you're into that sort of thing, it could save you some research time. Other than that, I found very little redeeming content here. What a pity.

Informative

This was probably the most informative and fun, yes fun, books to read about paranormal investigating. The author did a really good job with her writing style and stayed consistent throughout the entire book. My husband is a paranormal investigator but I am not. After this book though, I’m inclined to check out a few “haunted” places that he goes to in the future, with him of course! Lol

I liked this book. I mean I really like reading about ghosts, and hauntings, and old buildings and this book was just that. It was not the best book, but I did learn some cool things. One of the only real problems with this book is the fact that some of the info at the end of the chapters was wrong. Overall, I don't regret reading it. It was a good time filler.

I've DNFed this book many times and finally I'm done with it, I haven't read all of but have gotten at least halfway through.
The locations in this book are interesting but I'm not a fan of the writing or the experiences documented in here. But what I read interested me nonetheless since I am an avid fan of the supernatural. However I don't plan to read anymore of this and have given up on the book.

Book review originally published here: http://www.iheartreading.net/reviews/...

Haunted Asylums, Prisons and Sanatoriums takes us inside some of the darkest places in history, where people suffered or were treated in a cruel, dehumanizing way. Throughout the book, we learn more about the history of these places, and their supposed hauntings, as the author conducts research to find out who the ghosts are haunting these spots. Each chapter is dedicated to a seperate location, and begins by talking about the location’s history, then its specters, and then the author and her team conduct a thorough ghost hunt of the place. At the end of each chapter is information on how to get to the place, if/how you can do ghost hunts on your own, etcetera.

This is one of the best non-fiction books about hauntings that I’ve read. The book is well-organized, and well-written. The author doesn’t lose herself in trivial details when talking about history, and instead what we learned is significant and intriguing. The stories are backed up with pictures, some of which made shivers crawl down my back. One picture in particular really set me on edge. The strange thing is that it’s not even talked about in the book. I mean, it’s included, and it’s mentioned that it’s a picture of the Farrar school, but Davis makes no mention of the two figures on the picture – one little girl and a larger person. It’s one of the clearest ghost pictures I’ve seen in a while, and really impressive! I hope I’m not the only one seeing it though, because that would be totally creepy.

The language is quite informal, like Mrs. Davis is telling us a story. This might not be for everyone, but I really liked it, basically like she’s operating as some sort of tour guide, which fit the theme of the book. I have some comments about the way Mrs. Davis and her team conduct ghost hunts though. They rely heavily on a flashlight, using them for flashlight conversations. It’s the first time I’ve heard someone use this method at such lengths, and it would’ve convinced me more had there been video evidence included (of course that’s tough for a book) but I wasn’t really convinced the flashlight responses were anything other than random spikes. I much prefer actually hearing voices on tape, or seeing pictures of ghosts. Also, the questions asked during the flashlight conversations weren’t always to the point, and sometimes had a double meaning ghosts may not be able to interpret. I thought more fitting questions should’ve been asked, and other research should’ve been conducted as well, rather than just the flashlight conversations.

As a travel guide, this book is extremely useful, especially with the info about each location at the end of each chapter. For people interested in ghost hunts and the author’s personal experiences, the book lacks vital info – I had the feeling much more research should’ve been done at each spot to get a good grip of what’s happening.

The book was a very pleasant, enjoyable, sometimes chilling read. I can’t wait to visit these haunted asylums, prisons and sanatoriums!

Essentially a travel guide to what are considered some of the most haunted mental hospitals, sanitariums and prisons - all of which are open to the public for ghost hunting purposes.

I picked this up because of a general interest in the paranormal and ghost hunting. I should note that I have an open mind about the possibility of the existence of ghosts, but I am also a trained scientist, and a skeptic about the techniques used as evidence for the existence of paranormal phenomena such as ghosts.

This is a fairly informal guide - Davis uses informal language a lot, which many readers will enjoy, and provides a lot of useful information to anyone who wants to visit supposedly haunted places, including prices to visit at night, and access to safe rooms and bathrooms. I could see this being extremely useful to someone intending to visit any of the places explored.

Davis also includes short histories of the places, as well as some excerpts from experiences while ghost hunting in each of them. Most of these experiences describe personal impressions, as well as experiments using a loosened flashlight to "talk" to spirits and an EMP metre, as well as the use of electronic voice phenomenon (EVP). I have a problem in particular with the flashlight experiments, since this is a technique that has been debunked - unfortunately, most of the evidence given by Davis on the haunted status of the places relies on the flashlight conversations.

But, to be fair, this review shouldn't focus completely on the techniques used and whether they do or do not comprise real evidence. The fact is that David and her partner believe that the flashlight conversations and other techniques are evidence of hauntings and spirits. Every place they visited produced evidence, with several fairly startling conversations with spirits and EVPs recorded (including several sinister warnings to simply GET OUT).

Overall, a guide to some fascinating places, ghosts notwithstanding. And if you believe in the evidence, some pretty compelling experiments revealing the presence of spirits at these places. Personally, I would have liked to have seen some more concrete examples of evidence, as well as expansion on the history of some of the places (especially when there is hard evidence backing up urban myths about some of the places). Still, no doubt many would-be ghost hunters will find this a useful book, especially as a starting place about where to visit.

Although this book had fascinating information about the places he visited, I was rather disappointed that there was no further information upon his experiences. All I saw was "visit this site to see more". I don't want to see more. I want to learn the author's thoughts and insights about these situations like how he felt, what he saw and experienced, and what he thinks about these places he visited. I was literally bored that I nearly did not finish the book. I do appreciate that the author did give further information about pricing on these sites. I don't know whether I will be recommending this book or not.

This was a just OK read for me. I thought there would be more of a spook factor. Instead it read like an informational pamphlet about the places. I would have liked to know more about the spooky history of the places and maybe more of the ghost stories. I also didn't like the photos. They didn't really show anything spooky or interesting. I found myself skimming the flashlight conversations. They were too long and not scary. I think this book would work well as a basic guide to the places if you are going to take a tour.

I thought this book was a story format. It actually was the tours that Sam and Jaime did on their own. They talk about specific places and things that they discovered throughout their travels of 10 different locations throughout the USA. I hope to find another book that they wrote of their research and findings. I read this in one day, so I would consider it a good read. Love the pictures as well.

Pros: Brief history of each haunted place and more information on how one can tour it along with what amenities are offered.

Cons: Most of the book centers on the ghost-hunting experiences of the author and her companion, and I don't care as much about flashlight sessions.

Quick, interesting read nonetheless.

Nocka w nawiedzonym miejscu? Kto z Was o czymś takim marzy?

Wspomniane przeze mnie zdjęcia to wspaniałe rozwinięcie tematu i pomocne narzędzie.

Znajdziecie tu opisy wszystkiego, czego badacze doświadczyli w danym miejscu. I poczułam tu kilka razy ciary!

Hydroterapie i lobotomie. Brrr!

To czego mi brakowało w książce, to szersza perspektywa, szczególnie w kontekście historii opisywanych lokalizacji.

Delightfully readable, this book is perfect for the person seeking mild ghost stories. Each chapter describes a ghost hunt at a well-known location; you've probably heard of some of these haunted hospitals. Author Jamie Davis isn't a polished writer, so her casual tone comes across as familiar and conversational. At the end of each chapter, her partner Sam Queen documents his own observations. It's a cozy yet unnecessary touch.

I was torn between liking the excerpts of script and wanting to roll my eyes. The author's constant babble would have made me want to throw a flashlight, not turn it on. I also couldn't understand why she repeatedly left the ghost hunt early. After spending money on the tour, and especially when planning to include the findings in a book, you'd think she would make sure to get every moment.

This isn't my favorite ghost story encounter collection but it's entertaining.

This was fun and enjoyable because I'm from Ireland, so had never heard of a single place in this book. However, if I first read this book in 2o12 when it was first printed, I would be giving it a 2 stars for lack of full information on the sites/buildings and lack of pictures.
In 2012 I did not have a smart phone with the Internet, as such, I would not have been able to Google image the haunted places to see what they looked like.

I would also not be able to do some more research. What annoyed me about this book was that sometimes the authors alluded to a local myth or legend about a place, but didn't explain, or even write two sentences on that occurance. Thus, I had to get to Wikipedia myself and learn about the places.
This book is more like a travel brochure, giving you little bits on different places so you can decide to delve in further yourself.

I've always been interested in the supernatural, in all its forms: ghosts, haunted houses, cryptozoology and so on. I was looking for a book on haunted asylums, as they often have a dark reputation for their gloomy atmosphere.

This book is a cross between a ghost hunter's diary and a supernatural tourist guide. What makes it different is that the authors have transcribed some of their encounters with the possible entities of the places they visit. They even recounted their own experiences and encounters with possible supernatural entities.

While the content was interesting, I found that the author was a little too focused on her own impressions, which weighed down the text. I would have liked to know more about the places visited.

It’s an easy and fast read, but I was really hoping for more excitement rather than reading transcripts of flash light sessions. There were a lot of exclamation points which made it hard to take things seriously and overall I felt like I was reading a reddit thread on people’s ghost hunting experiences. Personally, I wish there was more backstory and history wrote about each of these places in the beginning instead of 2-3 small paragraphs. The last chapter was the least exciting story and was mostly photographs. Overall, I was disappointed in this book after being very excited to read it based on the back cover description.

I must admit I got this book because it had a section on a location really close to me. That and I'm a sucker for paranormal books.

This book didn't disappoint but there were some things that were kind of boring at times and some of the author's assumptions I didn't really agree with. In the end though I don't think what I disliked took away from the book too much.

It was still such a pleasant read.

A spooky read

I like reading books about ghost hunting and different people's stories about their unique experiences about the paranormal. This book is good because the authors combined their own personal stories with how to access the various haunted sites in the book to have your own experiences (which I feel gives more credence to the authenticity of their experiences).

It was okay.

While I always enjoy and respect everyone’s way of investigating or working with spirits. I had a really hard time with Jamie assuming one of the inmates killed their lover. It is very ignorant to assume anything when it comes to spirits because we just so not know, it is also very disrespectful and that can lead to other problems.
