Spencer Brothers #2

The Fake Husband Deal

Rate this book
Love, as it turns out, is the most complicated deal of all.

I'm the one-and-done, allergic-to-feelings, marriage-is-for-suckers guy.

That night with him? Unforgettable.
Learning he's my new client? Unexpected.
Pretending the spark between us isn't a forever flame? Impossible.

My life is a string of bad decisions.
Proposing a fake marriage to the sexy silver fox may be the worst one yet, but he needs me, and I might need him more.
Besides, why would I kick him out of my life when he looks so good in it?

What starts as a business arrangement quickly becomes something I can't categorize. Falling in love is definitely not part of our deal.

The Fake Husband Deal is book two in Ana Ashley's new series featuring the charming and far-too-handsome-for-their-own-good Spencer Brothers.
Expect romance, heat, fun, and plenty of laughs from a loving but slightly too meddlesome family unit.

The Fake Husband Deal is the second book in the Spencer Brothers series by Ana Ashley. I loved the first book and have been waiting for this one. This is Noah's story, the oldest brother. Noah and Lior's story to be precise. I loved their story so much. It was sweet, sexy, full of feels and very well written. Can't wait for the next book!

Read, but didn't like. It was very, very improbable and nothing made it worth the suspension of disbelief. The billionaire with the decorative glass business?! What? Why do you have to make them all billionaires?

Instant attraction to an anonymous stranger, a one night stand, second connection and a conundrum... the perfect recipe for an age gap, romance between a man who is dealing with grief and a will requiring him to marry to get his inheritance and a man who claims to never want to settle down...

This book has lots of steam, a dash of drama and a whole lot of feels and it had amazing pacing! While you don't necessarily have to have read what comes before, the characters from The Lost Fiancé Twist feature prominently, and we get more build up for the final Spencer Brother's story.

This is book 2 but this can be read as a standalone as the 'series' overlaps - not sure right terminology .

This is Noah's story - the oldest of the 3 brothers and it's a fake marriage trope but well written, with intrigue, drama, hot as smexy times and well love always wins right!

Love Pish's redemption - having an ex turn not so mean is a slight twist on the normal.

Noah and Lior are age-gap, instaconnection goals!

So good!

Lior and Noah have a fairly instant connection, a spark that ensures Lior accepts Noah's fake husband deal.

Love a fake relationship trope and the banter between these two as they tried not to give in to their fiery chemistry was so fun!

The feelings developed fairly quickly but weren't expressed for a while. I liked how Lior was Noah's safe space and Noah made Lior actually enjoy life.

Plenty of hints for the next book. Cannot wait

Noah has avoided love since his heart was broken. He’s fine with how his life is. He has his family, his job, his volunteering, and the hook ups to keep him satisfied. But everything changes when he meets Lior. One hook up wasn’t enough and he believes he won’t see him again. Until Lior’s company hires Noah’s to do PR work. Then they run into one another at a conference. The universe is telling them something even as they try to be just friends. But then Lior admits that after his father recently passed he put in his will that Lior has to marry to keep their family company. A company that means the world to Lior because it is his family’s history. So of course, Noah has to help. And to him that means proposing to Lior. A fake marriage to help Lior keep his company and for Noah to get the support of Lior’s peers for a charity. Nothing could go wrong! But of course, with any fake relationship, feelings start to happen. And with these two? It was always going to happen. They had chemistry the moment they met. And neither had a good excuse on why they couldn’t be more. These two are clearly meant to be and watching them fall in love a bit more page after page was super sweet. We also get some new characters, who one pairing we will be getting a short story about so yay! And of course, we catch up with the other Spencer brothers. And after that tiny cliffhanger, I cannot wait to get the next story!

Age gap
Fake husband

What I loved / liked :

The two characters in general for their genuine good heartedness. Especially Noah who helps a lot at a charity and who’s so selfless.
Lior’s mother who’s the typical old and funny mother.

Being fed up with all these books that have endless sex scenes all along, I really loved that this author keeps them short and occasional.

What I hated / disliked :

Adam’s reaction when he learned about their wedding. I understand the disappointment, especially in a family as tight as they are, but it was a bit too much.

We were promised a spanking all along the book and never got one.

Quick summary:

This book starts a little time before Emery was back in Lex’s life and on the day Adam and Victoria announced their engagement to the family. Lior (whom we met in the first book as the stained glass museum owner that Lex met for business instead of Noah) is at his father’s funeral where he meets Pierce, his ex, and several of his friends, none genuine except for a woman whose late husband was friend with his dad. An attorney gives him a notice to attend a meeting with other partners the following day in order to read an unexpected last will from his dad, and he leaves. He goes to his hotel then to a bar where he meets Noah who’s there with his old friend Jax. They hook up at Lior’s hotel without sharing their names. The next day, Lior learns that his father put a condition for him to take over the company and get the 60% share. He needs to get married within 6 months or he’ll lose everything including the museum where he also lives.

Three weeks later, Lior’s company has reached out to Noah’s for an ad campaign, and when Noah realizes who Lior is, he gets scared it might ruin their opportunity. Jax advises him to send Lex to the first meeting.

A week later Lior is in Atlanta for a conference. His mom calls and reminds him of the condition of the will, suggesting to maybe get back with Pierce. Noah also attends the conference and they get to meet at the hotel bar, where Noah reveals that Lex is his brother. They talk about organizing a family team building workshop for the Spencers and Noah talks about his crazy family while they have dinner.

The following morning, the conference opens on a speech by Noah about business with family which enraptures the audience except for Pierce who is there and criticising. He’s dumbfounded later when he realises that Lior knows Noah who puts him back in his place. They have dinner together, talking about Noah’s close relationship with his brothers and River, with Lior drinking a bit too much after he sees Pierce with a twink. As Noah walks him back to his room, Lior asks him to marry him and promises he’ll make him happy then falls asleep, cuddled by Noah. They spend the last day together, Lior’s mother texting him that she’s trying to set him up with a friend’s son, and even take the same flight back, parting at the airport.

On the Monday, Noah stops by the coffee shop and meets West, one of the guys who founded the charity he secretly volunteers at. They’re stalling with obtaining the old hospital to make it a shelter and Noah offers his help for a PR event. A week later, Noah has plans for the Stars Finder charity and meets Jax at Tanner’s to discuss this but Lior is there on a date with his mom’s friend’s son. As the guy goes to the restroom, Noah goes to Lior and proposes on his knees. Lior shortens his date and they go to Noah’s place. Noah actually wants to help Lior with keeping the business and the museum in his family, and in return, he wants to use Lior’s connections while being invited to the mayor’s ball for Stars Finder. They agree on a marriage without sex to avoid complications. They have a deal. So they announce it to Jax who will be best man with Tanner.

A couple of weeks later, the day Adam and Victoria have a family gathering to try their caterer, the four of them fly to Vegas for their own wedding, not having told their families yet, though Jax and Tanner are aware it’s all fake as they’ll be able to cover them if necessary. They have dinner together as a bachelor party, having booked a four bedroom suite in a hotel. The following morning, Lior offers Noah cufflinks that his grandfather had made. Jax and Tanner are nowhere to be found but they all meet at the chapel where Lior and Noah exchange vows and Noah seizes that opportunity to kiss him wildly. After a cake with Jax and Tanner, they fly back and Noah goes to Lior’s place where he gets his own bedroom as they stick to their no sex rule.

Several weeks later, they attend the mayor’s ball. Before they go, Noah meets Lior’s mother who’s a real delight and mentions the people Noah should mingle with at the ball for his charity. The ball is success as Noah manages to convince several wealthy people to help. Pierce attends too and is dumbfounded to see they’re married for real.

A few days later, in the office, Adam shares the family’s concern, a bit bitterly, regarding Noah’s recent absences at dinner. Jax texts with him to say he should tell them the truth and also convince to stay married. Noah tells Adam that he’ll have a plus one the following weekend at his wedding rehearsal weekend. On the Friday, they have the meeting with Lior’s mom and the associates who believe it’s a fake marriage but his mom takes his side.

That evening they go to a hotel near the venue where they have Adam’s wedding rehearsal and have to share the same bed, but nothing happens. The following morning, they meet a little girl who loves Lior’s museum and recognizes him and as Noah introduces himself as his husband, his family is there and overhears. It turns into a big drama with Victoria being upset, his parents disappointed and Adam angry. His idea had been to keep the marriage secret for now and to only introduce Lior as his boyfriend. After sending Lior to their room, he overhears his brothers talking when he tries to go to speak to Lex and it turns into another argument as he passes off as the whore and clown of the family. Only Lex supports him.

Noah returns to Lior and they finally have sex, then he breaks down in the shower and lets Lior soothe him. They go lie down and Noah explains that after a painful breakup, he dedicated himself to start the company, worked hard and only allowed himself to hook up so he wouldn’t get heartbroken again. And that’s all he lets others see. They’re awoken from a nap by all the guys who summon them to a soccer game. Lior properly meets Noah’s mother who looks a bit less tense. The rest of the day goes well and tensions fade throughout the game, then dinner, and when they go to a bar where Adam asks them to repeat their vows. They create new ones and Lior takes Noah to the restroom for a quickie. When they step out, they meet Victoria who bitches them to tone things down saying she knows they’re fake. The following morning the families have a brunch and the brothers have definitely made up. Noah reveals his secret with Stars Finder, West having confirmed that they were granted the lease for the old hospital.

The following week, Lior catches Pierce meeting with Getty, one of his bad associates, and warns him of the man who might have bad intentions. Pierce doesn’t take it very well. When he gets home, he finds Noah impaled on a plug stuck to the fridge and they have sex.

On the Saturday, Noah helps cleaning the hospital with his brothers. Adam is upset because Victoria is on a last minute trip and he had to cancel plans for a romantic weekend. Lior picks up Noah and they drive to Lior’s place at the museum where he got back his grandfather’s gazebo. On the Sunday, Lior’s mom meets Noah’s family and they get all along well.

The next Saturday, as Noah is playing with Stars Finder, an article comes out about their marriage being a scam and a picture of Noah with Jax at Tanner’s. Noah is assaulted by reporters but Pierce shows up and drives him away. He tries to convince Noah that he’d be better for Lior, and that it was Lior who had cheated on him. Back at his apartment, he’s doubting himself and considers he might be a liability to Lior. Lior is at the museum when his second in command Charlie breaks the news to him. He decides to go to Noah to discuss this but Pierce shows up and offers to get back together. Lior sends him away and leaves. He confronts Noah on the picture with Jax and he explains it was just noisy at the bar. However he remains mute when he shows him the bunch of pictures of Noah with another man that he received in an envelope, so he leaves.
Back at his place, his mother is waiting and he tells her the entire truth. She received the same pictures and tells him they could be fake, and that Noah surely loves him. When he realises that he calls Lex for help.

Noah called a code red so they all gather at his place, and tell him the same things Lior’s mother told her son. Lex can also prove that the pictures are fake. Once they’ve left, Noah texts Lior and asks for a talk. Lior says he’ll visit him the next night but after two days, he still hasn’t come.

Noah eventually goes to Luke’s office where he first meets Pierce and they ride up together. Pierce explains that Getty is responsible for the fake pictures and also apologizes for his lies. In the meeting room with all the partners, and after they’ve confessed their real feelings, Lior and Noah prove that their marriage is real and incriminate Getty. Lior considers replacing him with Pierce. They have sex as they get back home.

Two months later. On his way to the basket court, Noah is kidnapped by Drew and West, taken to Adam and Lex who dress him up and take him to Lior as they have arranged a secret ceremony for their wedding.

A few weeks later, they’re back from their honeymoon in Australia and straight to the vineyard for Adam’s wedding. Except that the bride has fled and they need to tell the groom.

Kinda OK

Low angst
Marriage of convenience
Age gap
Dual first person POV

Fake relationship is my favorite trope so I was excited to read this, but it left much to be desired. I didn't connect to either character so I found a lot of the conflicts to be more annoying than anything else. The plot had potential but just wasn't executed well. Lior's dad loves him SO much yet stipulates Lior must get married to inherit the company? Yuck. And the villains were so-so. I'm irked that the ex boyfriend is awful yet not hated but the brothers fiance - a woman- is awful and actually gets worse. Add to all this that there was a lot of telling us things rather than giving us context to see or recognize things on our own.

Noah is a f*ckboy at the beginning. He has no problem joking about it or telling us he enjoys hookups. Tells us he has one random hookup a week... because he needs to "feel a connection... intimacy" with someone but isn't willing to fall in love. What? Who gains a connection with someone during a one night stand or quickie in a bathroom? And then when his brothers don't believe his marriage is real because he's a f*ckboy Noah falls apart. C'mon, now. BOTH of those things are true. Instead of my heart breaking for Noah I was annoyed.

Then Lior gets all doubtful after months together and Noah freezes when asked directly to explain things? Who are these people and where were they the first 75% of the story?

And the way Lior notices things and connects them to Noah being Portuguese was a bit tone deaf. I'm Mexican and I can't imagine someone thinking any of my basic behaviors are because of my heritage. Now if Noah owned them as such, sure. And the way Lior's mother phrased the tan skin comment was another weird one.

Overall, not great. I read it because it's my favorite trope and it had potential. It's like ordering your favorite dish at a restaurant. Even if it comes out overcooked and tasteless, it's your favorite so you eat it anyway. 3 stars instead of 2 because of the positive bi rep. No bi-erasure or biphobia so there's that.

The Fake Husband Deal by Ana Ashleyis the second book in her Spencer Brothers series. It is a romantic comedy with a little angst about two men who find love when they aren’t looking for it. Noah Spencer runs a PR firm with his brothers Adam and Lex. They are an up and coming business and work hard to make it succeed. Noah is also known for his one night stands which started after his boyfriend left him and he didn’t want his heart to get hurt again. However, this isn’t the real him and he longs for someone to see the person he is. He is also passionate about volunteering at Star Finders, a charity that supports foster and low income children in the community. They are in the process of trying to secure the old hospital building in town to use as a center for their activities and since their founders are friends of Noah’s they ask for his help to get the funds they need. One night Noah goes to their local bar and sees Lior Van Stern, who is the head of the Stained Glass Museum in town and now headed to be the CEO of the world wide glass company his father owned. He is at the bar because his father just died and he needed to get away from all the people after the funeral. When they see each other it is an instant attraction that they act on but don’t reveal their names and then go their separate ways. But they can’t stop thinking about each other. Then they both show up at the same convention and learn who they are. Noah is a speaker at one of the sessions that Lior attends and he starts to see the kind of man he is. They like each other and spend the rest of the time there together. When they return home Noah realizes that Lior is interested in hiring their company and he can’t date a client so he moves him to one of his brothers. Then the bomb gets dropped on Lior when he learns that in order to keep control of the company he has to marry for love within the next 6 months. As Lior and Noah continue to get to know each other Noah learns of this situation and offers to marry him. When Lior asks why he’s willing to do this he says it’s because he can help Lior with keeping his company and Lior can introduce him to people who can help him get funds for Star Finders. So the make the fake husband deal. The story continues as they go to Las Vegas and get married with two of Noah’s friends as their witnesses and then go about trying to convince their families, their friends, and the board that they really are in love. Lots of missteps happen, especially when their close families are involved, as well as one of the board members not believing them and doing all he can to stop Lior from taking over. Lior also has an ex boyfriend, Pierce, who tries to cause some havoc as things progress. There is some family drama with Noah’s brothers and Adam’s fiancé, who thinks their marriage is upstaging her wedding plans. Then they have a falling out that luckily gets resolved and leads to their happy ending as they realize that their love means more to them than anything. I really enjoyed this story. Ms. Aashley has a writing style that is easy to read and keeps you interested. Noah is such a good guy as he wants the best for everyone and his comebacks are very funny and often snarky. Lior is also a wonderful character who cares for the people he loves and is willing to go the extra mile for them. Both of the men had insecurities and try not to fall for each other but find that it’s impossible not to do that and even though they are thinking that they are afraid to say it to the other. They also have some very hot love scenes along the way. Their families and friends have a large part in this story as they question their motives but also add their support, especially since they see they are in love long before they are willing to admit it. There is also some suspense concerning Lior’s business and who is trying to sabotage their marriage which gets resolved in a great way. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like the fake marriage, older/younger men tropes with some humor and heart felt longing that leads to love.

Buona lettura!

spoiler alert
.
From a story point of view I probably would have given this book a 3.5 star rating but this book could have benefitted from some beta reader feedback before heading for editing and publication.
So why the 2 stars? A few points.
The bedroom scenes were rather "meh". There is no feeling, the scenes are "hurried" along so whatever they do is given one sentence and then they are off to do something else interspersed with too much chatter. The scenes feel lackluster and somewhat climincal, almost like someone is describing what's happening from a medical point of view, and then someone tried to spruce things up with ill fitting conversation.
I.e.
1. He preps him with one finger, then asks if he is ready for him and gets an afirmative answer, but then keeps prepping with a second and a third finger. The question of "are you ready for me" ought to have come after prepping with the third finger.
2. I met his thrusts trying to get him to hit my prostate. (so he's not quite right yet!) then meaningless chatter about how the other guys fingers were long and sexy and he gets asked "Are you close?" answer "So close" (When did that happen? While chatting about long fingers?)
3. "sweat ran down my back" From what? They are in an airconditioned hotel and all he did was stand there and take it.
I just didn't feel the scenes. Sorry.
Also I understand that this is a series and things have to be said that will lead into the next book/s, but the way that was done was not at all subtle and it might as well have had foot note saying "this is what you can expect to happen in the next book. It felt clumsy.
The very fast and totally unexpected turn around Pierce made at the end of the book was also rather convenient for the story and did not reflect the character of the person. The reader gets no insight into how this came about. It could have been fixed with a bit of dialogue in the elevator scene with Noah and Pierce.
I also didn't quite get how someone I understood to be shareholder trying to buy more shares could be "sacked" and replaced with Pierce at the end. That felt like a lose end and even though Pierce had come around to appear friendly, I would not have entrusted him with a position in the family business after the way he had conducted himself throughout the book.

Recensione per il blog Peccatrici Librose

Buongiorno Peccatrici,

Fake Husband/Marriage of Convenience trope

I am generally not a fan of the fake marriage trope, especially when it is done solely for the purpose of monetary gain. But the way this situation was set up I felt bad for both MCs and it didn’t bother me.

Lior gets blindsided on the day of his father’s memorial when he finds out there was a new will…one that requires him to get married within six months in order to inherit his father’s shares of the company and become CEO. As a 47 year old marriage had not been in his plans. Then he meets Noah and there’s an immediate spark. When Noah finds out Lior’s situation he proposes a fake marriage arrangement. They agree to keep it purely professional. Of course they both catch feelings and difficulties ensue.

I particularly felt for Noah who has a relationship disaster in his past that he’s never shared and he believes his family doesn’t value him. He’s allowed them to believe an image he’s created by definitely feels he is taken for granted. A couple scenes in the book are just heartbreaking. Lior actually sees Noah and it’s wonderful to watch the relationship develop.

The crisis point is easy to see coming but is still gut wrenching. I enjoyed the resolution scene a lot.

My one criticism of the book, which I am sure will not bother many readers, is the abundance of sex scenes. I have no problem with sex scenes that advance the plot or help with character development but so many of these felt gratuitous or like they were being used as filler because the author had no more storytelling to do. That is when sex scenes annoy me.

The ending of this book, like the last one, gives us a segue to the third book. Since it addresses an issue that has been building for the first two books I am anxious to get to it.

Recensione su copia ARC
VOTO: 4.5 stelle

📖 The fake husband dead
🖋️ Ana Ashley
🧬 Romance contemporâneo - MM
⭐ 3
🌶️ 4

🎧 Audiobook Review 🎧
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Performance: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️️⭐️️
Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another book about the Spencer brothers and this was just as much fun as the first volume.
Noah meets a sexy silver fox in a bar and a hot night ensues. But the two haven't even exchanged names yet.
Lior has completely different problems when his father dies. He can only inherit the company and his beloved musuem if he marries within 6 months. When Lior meets Noah again by chance, the explosive chemistry is right and they decide on a fake wedding. But what happens when real feelings get involved? And when the ex wants Lior back?
The story was a lot of fun, I was really entertained and it got exciting in between. The story is written in an emotional and touching way anyway and I really felt for the two of them.
The banter between Noah and Lior was brilliant and I loved the explosive chemistry between them and the complexity of their feelings.
The author captured the wonderful personalities of Lior and Noah perfectly. I loved this sweet story that captivated me.

Alexander Cendese gave Noah and Lior perfect voices and as always delivered a fantastic performance! An amazing and entertaining audiobook!

I honestly wasn’t sure how I was going to like Noah and Lior's story, so I actually skipped it the first time around, but then I went back to it. And I ended up loving these two. In the other books, Noah just seemed a bit much and such a playboy. And sometimes age gap stories are a hit or miss for me. But Lior is just such a sweet and caring man and I really believed he deserved to find happiness, especially in the situation he found himself in. Lior and Noah‘s connection was obvious from the start. Lior gave Noah that attention and understanding and a real connection that Noah was trying to find in everyone else’s bed. And I liked seeing under Noah's playboy facade to his big heart and what he had been searching for.

Their connection and chemistry were amazing. And even the whole time when they’re supposedly faking it for their own reasons, it was obvious that these two were falling hopelessly in love and were insatiable together.

This is an age gap, fake and secret marriage, MM Romance with the sweetest connection and hot chemistry. I really ended up liking these two together and I am glad I went back and read it. It also makes me want to read the upcoming novella for West and Drew even more.

These two are fools for thinking anything between them was fake!!

Let me tell you, their chemistry was off the charts and super hot. They were also charming AF.

Noah is the oldest of the Spencer brothers, and no matter how close they are, he’s always felt a little left out of the twin bond of his siblings. Not fully seen. He’s incredibly loyal and thoughtful, but he plays a role. It’s not until Lior…Lior sees him, sees behind the facade.

Lior is one sexy silver fox, who has long given up on a happy ever after. Until Noah. The man willing to give him his family's legacy and his home. And he doesn’t want anything for himself in return. He’s a beautiful person, and I adore them both.

The story is steamy and fun, and has plenty of drama to keep you from putting the book down.
