IOU #2

Studious

Rate this book
After a disastrous high school game of spin the bottle, I gave up trying to get a boyfriend and spent my time studying instead. Now I’m twenty-four, and I’m not only a virgin, I haven’t even been kissed.

When I meet Danny, a handsome legal hotshot, he catches my eye. Right before I trip on flat ground. Ugh.

He’s got a massive … reputation. He’s the most popular guy in the club, a total playboy with a new conquest every night. There’s no way he’d be interested in me.

But one night after I imbibe too much, he winds up taking care of me. And when I ask for his help with my travesty of a social life, he agrees to teach me how to be less awkward with men … if I let him document my progress so he can win a bet with his best friend.

Even though he’s just my love tutor and I’m just his apprentice, this starts to feel like more.

Too bad it can’t be anything but a high-level seminar in how to seduce someone else.

Studious is a sweet and sexy contemporary opposites-attract m/m romance about a suave attorney who’s scared to love and the shy, nerdy bookkeeper he’s teaching how to be a player. Cue makeover montage and a smoldering first kiss. These heroes most definitely are not falling in love. (Okay, heartwarming HEA guaranteed.)

Studious is book two in the IOU series by Leslie McAdam. This is a sweet, sexy MM romance between a successful lawyer who has vowed never to give his heart away, and a nerdy bookkeeper who wants nothing more than for someone to love him.

Alden Meyer is twenty four years old and has never been kissed! He’s an awkward, shy bookkeeper who longs for someone to see him as something more. He is about to start his new job as bookkeeper for Weston & Ramirez, a law firm that caters to LGBTQ clients. And on his first day there, he meets one of the partners, Danny, and he is instantly taken with him!

Danny Villasenor is twenty eight years old and is a lawyer at Weston & Ramirez. He loves his job and loves his life. At least, that’s what he tells himself. He wins most of his cases and has a different man whenever he wants. Because that’s his rule, one night only. He’s well known for his skill in the bedroom and the fact that there is never a repeat. When Danny first meets their new bookkeeper, he can’t help but notice how cute he is and how innocent he seems. On a night when Alden has a little too much to drink, he admits to Danny that he needs someone to teach him how to date, how to be more confident, how to talk to men.

Danny and Alden agree to a teacher/student arrangement. Only with every success Alden gains, Danny falls a little harder. He doesn’t want any of Alden’s firsts to be with anyone else but him. And the better Alden gets to know Danny, the only man he wants to experience anything with is him.

These two were so cute together. I loved the confident side of Alden that emerged. And I also adored the wild side of him that no one else saw! I loved the relationship both of these men had with their moms. This was a cute, fun book. It had an epilogue one year in the future but still, sort of ended abruptly. So I’m hoping that will be addressed in the next book, book three, Oblivious, Noah and August’s book. I can’t wait to read it.

This was very sweet, swoon-worthy, and fun.

The story is about Alden and Danny. Alden is a shy and insecure virgin, while Danny is a self-confident playboy; both men have a backstory as to why they are the way they are, and both have a gentle and kind-hearted nature.
The story is basically about Alden feeling like he needs to change. He wants to be able to talk to men without stuttering and stumbling, and most of all, he wants to finally have his first kiss. When he meets Danny, he is immediately in awe of the man, but when he finds out that Danny never does anything more than one-night stands, he asks him to teach him how to get men to want to be with him: he wants to become more like Danny.
Danny, of course, does not think Alden should change. He thinks the shy man is absolutely adorable and super cute, so he offers to teach him to have more confidence only, but nothing drastic that would change his personality.
And thus, so begins their tutoring relationship in which Danny is supposed to help Alden find someone else to kiss, have sex with, and be in a relationship with. What Danny did not expect, though, is that after getting to know Alden more and more, he wants that someone to be himself.

“I thought our arrangement was something superficial and just for fun. I thought you were sweet, and so cute and innocent, and I’d help you out. With someone else. But now I can’t stand that thought. I don’t think I deserve you, but I’m a jealous enough bastard that I don’t want anyone else to have a chance with you. I want to be the one who captures all your kisses. I want to be the one in bed with you. I want to be the one to cook you breakfast and have you tell me every baseball statistic you know. You fascinate me, and I don’t think that will ever change. Because I get you, and I think you get me.”

I have to say that I personally did prefer the first half over the second. Something about their chemistry and pining just did it for me. Eventually they kiss for the first time and start doing things in the bedroom, which made their unresolved sexual tension dissipate a little bit. Fortunately, though, the tension still remained when it came to their insecurities about where they stood and if the other wanted more than they initially planned on having too.

This was a very sweet and caring relationship, and it was super easy to like all the characters. It was a very nice read.

Overall Opinion
Wow! Wow, wow, wow. What an absolute stunner of a book! Alden and Danny were unconditionally exquisite and couldn't be more perfect. In Studious, we meet Danny, an extremely shy virgin who begins working as a bookkeeper with Danny, an attorney with a reputation as a playboy. We see Danny putting his all into helping Alden become more confident in himself and gain experience talking to men, and along the way the lines between the agreement to tutor Alden and developing a relationship become blurred. We bear witness to plenty of spicy scenes that would make even the toughest man blush, and also to the amazing plot-building. Alden and Danny were such a downright delicious couple and I absolutely adored getting to experience their love develop. Overall, this book was an epic read, and I cannot WAIT for Noah and August's story next!

Another book by Leslie McAdam that I loved. Alden was such a sweetie that I couldn’t help but fall in love with him. And Danny, the ultimate playboy, couldn’t either. I didn’t even get upset with the last minute breakup because Danny always said Alden was too good for him so I knew he’d try and let him find someone else. If you love a sweet story about two lost souls finding their happily ever after I highly recommend this.

Alden and Danny were cute, one super inexperienced with physical rendezvous and the other overly practiced. Danny's regard for Alden's feelings the whole way through their "player" lessons was adorable. This was totally a case of Alden fell first, but Danny fell harder!

The blurb got me. An awkward virgin nerd asks a serial one-night-stander to teach him how to become more confident: yes please. To top it all, they work together at the same law firm. And of course, they’re both gay and attracted to each other. The recipe for a cute and steamy MM romance for sure.

And except for one tiny aspect–that’s mostly a matter of taste–it would have nailed it. My problem is with the usual sexy check list. Sure, Alden is a virgin and he isn’t going to jump into bed with someone he barely knows, even though he’s attracted to him. Danny slowly shows him what he’s missed all those years, one thing at a time. Kisses, make out sessions, dry humps… with some kind of progression. Though it’s understandable, it kind of bothered me. It really felt like a check list at times, which is still somewhat consistent with Alden’s character. It’s mostly that it’s a recurring plot device with virgin characters in romance and I’m tired of it. As I said, a matter of taste.

The rest is pretty much perfect. Not absolutely perfect, because the way Danny changes his ways for Alden was too sudden, in my opinion. I’d have liked to see more struggles from him. One day he swears off love, the next he sleeps around, then he decides he’s bored, and right then he falls for Alden head over heels.

Besides those details, I really liked Alden and Danny’s love story. The characters were compelling–Alden is just awkwardly adorable, while Danny is a good guy despite his playboy status. They have positive relationships with pretty much every side characters, be it friends, co-workers or family. You can’t help but root for them.

I loved that the reason why Danny starts being a mentor for Alden–the bet with his friend Charlie–doesn’t become a source of conflict. Basically, it’s mostly a lack of communication, which is a given between two people new to relationships, that threatens the couple, and not for very long. They kind of get each other, respect each other, and if it wasn’t for their fear of defining what they have, there wouldn’t even be a conflict.

The setting is again, for the author, a non-homophobic world, and if it isn’t really realistic, it’s also refreshing. The positive vibe and general acceptance warms the heart. If you’re looking for a gay romance with little drama, and a lot of steam, about a cute couple, this book is for you.

I have this on Kindle for reading & I have it in paperback for cuddling 💜
Leslie McAdam has done it again!
Alden and Danny are both bent (not broken) in their own unique ways, carrying heartache and emotional traumas from their respective youths into their adult lives… as we all do. They have each allowed their past pain to sculpt them into who they are, but is that really who they are meant to be? Or could finding THEIR PERSON be the key to unlocking their ability to accept themselves as they are?
Will they give themselves permission to be happy? Or will their ingrained fears and insecurities doom them to a life of emotional mediocrity?

As with all of Leslie’s novels, this book will cause you to think; to reflect on who you are & how you’ve OVERCOME to BECOME. There is something so magical in her words that a person can’t help but find ways to relate to the characters. There are life lessons that will subtly gut-punch you & make you think.

This is a fun and enjoyable love story that will keep you smiling and leave you with a sigh. Danny and Alden’s first kiss left me feeling like I need a do-over of every first kiss EVER because the heat they shared was ridiculously sexy!! Angst? Yeah, a little. Sexy times? Oh yeah!!
I loved the ish outta this book & I think you will, too! Happy reading!

Leslie McAdam always manages to craft a beautiful story. Layered and inclusive. Emotional but also hopeful and romantic.

Alden and Danny are both men who were shaped by encounters with men when they were young. Alden, shy and awkward, shied away from people even more. So much so that he’s never even been kissed. While Danny decided that the no-commitment lifestyle was the way to go. He’s always honest with the men he sleeps with - one night only.

Alden starts working at the Law Firm Danny is at, he’s excited for the new job at an LGBTQ-friendly workplace, and the extremely good-looking co-worker is a bonus. Something about Alden’s shy nature speaks to Danny. In a moment of boldness, Alden asks Danny to tutor him in the ways of men, to be more confident, and finally do more than dream about them.

What transpires is a really cute teacher/student story that has these two spending a lot of time together. And the more time they spend, the more they start to question the assumptions they’ve made about their own lives. Not to mention, they start to feel things. So many things!

They were really adorable, and sexy together, and I loved the progression of their romance and their self-discovery. Both the moms were pretty great too. And of course, we are all super excited about the next book.

Such a sweet ending.....this book is so different to book 1, although it is nice to have a crossover of characters. This author writes brilliantly and just sucks you in. You become so invested in the MC's. Danny is just superb, such a sweetheart hidden behind his bravado. There is sexual chemistry throughout but due to the nature of this story the sexy stuff takes longer to reach; but totally worth the wait. Lots of potential characters for future books that I hope get their story. Absolutely 5 stars, what a cracking series.

Thank you to Ellewoodspr and Leslie McAdam for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

The characters were so amazing. The plot was soo good. Leslie McAdam is the best!!

I freaking loved Alden, he was so shy and cute. I liked how he rose his self confidence. Alden had great friends too who helped him. And Danny was so awesome. He really helped Alden so much to grow his personality. Their bond was unbreakable.

I'm glad at some point Danny stopped making videos for Alden. He realised he might hurt him and that was so sweet. I was so happy when he realised Alden is the one for him. And I freaking loved his grand gesture.

Talking about smut, it was fucking hot!! Especially all that licking and sucking. 😏 And the description of their first kiss was just soo hawt.

I want to read about Noah and August. I'm really excited for their story.

I want to be the one who captures all your kisses. I want to be the one in bed with you. I want to be the one to cook you breakfast and have you tell me every baseball statistic you know. You fascinate me, and I don’t think that will ever change. Because I get you, and I think you get me.”

Simmering delicious sexy sexy that cocooned the story ✔️✔️

This story was ridiculously easy to read, and I super happy about that. That may sound weird, but because I just finished the first book in this series not too long ago and it wasn’t the best experience for me, this one was like magic *heart eyes* which is actually what I normally expect from Leslie :)

I enjoyed the characters and the backdrop of the story along with the romance itself a lot. I especially liked that the story was very low on the angst meter and really a lot of fun. I mean I was smiling like a lunatic for most of the read!

Alden's a very shy, inexperienced bookkeeper at a LGBTQ advocate law firm when he gets up enough nerve to approach his gorgeous coworker/rescuer for some confidence and love tutoring. Danny's Alden's opposite - he's confident, bold and a one night only kind of guy, the perfect man to give Danny some lessons in how to be with other men. No feelings are to be involved, just fun, learning and pleasure. But as we all know, feelings always, always develop in these situations. The question is, how will this adorable would be couple cope with these feelings? Lean into them, into each other and be happy? Run from them? Both?

Danny's never been the same since his long ago love dumped him on prom night. Now he's a certified playboy with all the right moves to make men happy, once only, though, no repeats. But when his adorable new coworker asks him for some lessons, his rules fly out the window. He's starting to feel, wants more than a one time thing. But he knows Alden deserves better than him. Will he do what he thinks is best for Alden? Or learn that love isn't something to run from? That he deserves the kind of love that scares him?

Danny and Alden are fire together! The steam level is off the charts hot, and it's obvious from their first meeting that these lessons are going to end in more than just some confidence for Alden and some fun for Danny. I loved them together and cannot wait for more men falling in love.

I am so happy I decided to pick up this book. I was recently introduced to M/M romance and I have been hooked ever since. This story did not disappoint. This is my first read from Leslie McAdam and it will not be my last. Leslie’s writing was superb as I was easily able to imagine each scene as if watching with my own eyes.

The romance between Danny and Alden is spicy and smoldering, definitely lots of angst! Danny is a virgin, shy yet eager to finally become physical and meet someone, so he partners with Alden, who is the exact opposite. Alden is the typical playboy, taking Danny under his wing to build self confidence and sex appeal. Tension builds between them as they are unable to fight the heating desire building within. I was on the edge of my seat as the plot thickened. The moments between Alden and Danny were filled wit spice yet passion. If you love reading blossoming romance, this will not disappoint.

From the character building to the plot, Leslie has really out done themselves with this one.

I absolutely loved Alden and Danny’s story from their first meeting where Alden was so starstruck by Danny to Danny slowly falling in love after years of being a player.

“After all, I’m twenty-four years old, and I’ve never even been kissed.”

Studious, by Leslie McAdam, was so dang cute!! This is the second book in the IOU series. This can be read as a standalone, but I recommend checking out the first book because it is super sweet as well! ❤️

Highlights:
⭐️virgin MC
⭐️playboy MC
⭐️office romance
⭐️sexy “tutoring”
⭐️sweetness overload

Danny and Alden were adorable. I loved the confidence of Danny and how he helped Alden come out of his shell and let his personality shine!! These two made each other better in many ways. Also, you get Firefly references throughout the book, which I loved. It was a tragedy that show was canceled so soon. I felt like Alden and I could have been fast friends with our common interests, haha. ❤️

Favorite quote:
“I’m officially making him mine. Maybe I already did that when we had sex. Or when I kissed him the first time. Or the first time I listened to him. But no matter what, he’s fucking mine.”

Loved this book, and I really hope book 3 is Noel and August. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!! 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Yes, Alden is a geek, super shy, and introvert, he’s twenty-four and wants to be kissed and more sexy stuff done, before he’s old.
Danny does only one-night stands, he swore off relationships after a bad experience. And oh boy he got one after another one night.

In short, Danny will help Alden to get a social life, he helps him with a new haircut, clothes and more, all with the goal of a relationship for Alden with a guy. Alden has a crush on Danny, but he can’t know about it.

Alden’s first kiss is awesome. Dang, that was intense!

Danny has to keep his head clear with Alden, his mind says the wrong things, things he can’t do because he’s a one-night stand of a guy. Instead, he’ll find him the right guy.
Alden doesn’t want to look for the right guy, the one he wants is sitting next to him, it hurts Danny doesn’t want him.

While I couldn’t feel the story at the start of this read, because it felt awkward, the further I came the better it got, it got more body and solid.
You understand, after all the investments they end up together, and the road to that point was awesome, it was fun, cute, sweet, with some hurt comfort, and a lot of intense sexiness.

A fave

Alden & Danny are new faves. I loved their story so much. Alden & Danny became friends very quickly even though Alden is shy and awkward at first. I loved that Danny never looked at him different, but always appreciated Alden for who he was as a person. Watching Danny turn from playboy into boyfriend was so much fun. It happened before he even realized what was happening. And I loved that Alden always knew what he wanted and wasn’t afraid to say it. Fabulous.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

Studious is the second, standalone entry in the IOU series, involving two men, one bed, and a happily ever after. It starts as a spur of the moment idea when Danny decides to start up an ad/VICE account (like Tiktok, only kinkier) and picks Alden as his subject. Alden, nearly 30, is a virgin. He’s held hands, but he’s never been kissed. His nerves, his anxiety, his self-doubt and self-judgement always get in the way. Either he can’t talk, or he says the wrong thing, or he freezes up and says nothing. And he’s tired of it. Alden wants to have a boyfriend, wants to have a first kiss and a second, wants to have sex and go on dates and live his life! Maybe it isn’t so much learning a technique or a line … maybe it’s more about finding the person he feels comfortable enough with to open up to.

My heart overflowed with joy as I turned each page and my smile only grew bigger as Alden and Danny grew closer to finding their HEA together.

Leslie has a way of crafting words that go beyond classifications and break through stereotypes. She's built a world of inclusion where anyone feels loved and accepted and it truly made my soul sing.

Alden Meyer reminded me so much of myself. Awkward and socially inept. He's so sweetly adorkable I wanted to wrap him up in a hug only because I saw so much of myself in him. Alden doesn't people and in social situations he tends to panic which only makes his humaning worse. I adored him so much, but also emphasized with his social shyness. It's an awful feeling when you have soooooo many feelings, but they tend to burst out at the wrong times or stay bottled up behind the lump in your throat. Oh, sweet Alden. He deserved all the best in the world and that's exactly what Danny saw in him, which made their unique situation so much harder as they grew closer.

Danny Villasenor, was a known player, but he lived that life for a reason. His backstory is heartbreaking and I'll leave for you to read, but this kind, caring, and sweet man is so easy to like. His in between player years are so easily forgotten, that Danny won me over in a heartbeat and I fell like a ton of bricks.

Since Alden has been so awkward, up to this point in his life, he's had zero experience in the dating or relationship field. When he meets Danny, and hears about his past, he asks him to help him be confident, break out of his shy shell, basically be a player, but the more time they spend together, the more time they just want to spend together and not spend with other people. It's not what they initially agreed upon, but could it be what they both want in the end?

Enter the small angst...which was brief. Their story was beautiful and perfect and I basked in their glow.

This book is all about finding YOUR person. While they both had a transformation of sorts, finding the person who loves you for you is what finding your other half is all about. They make you better, they make you want to be better and being that best version of yourself is what other people see when they see a person happy in love.

That cover though! Just look at it! It’s absolutely perfect. The colours, the model. More importantly, it fits the story so well. Alden Meyer is shy, so very, very shy that he just doesn’t realise what a hottie he is. He doesn’t give himself any credit for being a thoroughly lovely human being.

Alden is bookkeeper chic. A lover of spreadsheets and F1, we have so much in common already.

Danny Villaseñor is Mr Confident. He doesn’t date. Doesn’t offer repeat performances and he definitely doesn’t do cuddling or play big spoon and little spoon unless it’s with his cat. He doesn’t just walk into a room, he struts in and he knows how to wear a suit. Gulp, he’s hot, hot, hot, hot, hot!

So when little innocent cutie Alden gets a bit tipsy at a Friday night after work drinks event and Danny plays the knight in shining armour and takes care of him, I was clapping my hands with glee. I could see fun times ahead. Danny is wingman and tutor and he’s there for practice sessions too.

When the innocent one goes to the experienced one and you think one will educate the other and then it flips because they learn from each other. That’s what I’m here for. Bring me some popcorn and a glass of wine.

Noah and August (other characters in the book) need to get with the programme. Come on guys, sort it out. Don’t you just love it when an author makes you desperate to read about another couple before the other couple have been written about and at the same time throws some history at you? I do! Amelia Crowley and me go way back. I love it when that happens in a book and I feel like I’m part of the backstory.

This is a lovely book.

I absolutely loved Studious! I was hooked from the start & couldn't stop reading until I finished the book. Alden is the shy nerdy book keeper who is still a virgin at 24 years old. He also has never been kissed. Danny is a hotshot attorney who has a different guy each night. Danny loves to party & is such a playboy. Alden ends up with Danny & they make a deal for Danny to help Alden come out of his shell. Can they keep this relationship just as a teaching/learning one or will it lead to more? Leslie McAdam has done such a wonderful job creating this world in the book. Studious is a must read book!

Well written relationship development.

I quite enjoyed this. Danny starts off totally anti relationship, but for Alden he's practically the perfect guy… strong, loyal, dependable, hot-as-heck, thoughtful, considerate, funny, witty, smart, gorgeous, tenacious, caring… did I mention he was hot?

He really brings Alden out of his shell. The more Alden starts to cast off his self imposed limits, his confidence grows exponentially… and there’s one man who stands at the forefront of his determination to make something more of his life, and that's 'one nighter' Danny.

I really liked them together. Both benefit from their time together, Danny ends up being a great teacher, but also learns a great deal from Alden. I really enjoyed how both guys' personalities developed throughout the story, and earned a lovely HEA. Well written. 4.5 stars.

I can’t say enough good things about Alden, who was hands down my favorite part of this book. I loved the layers to his character— the strength beneath the shyness, and also just how genuine he is as a person. Danny is such an excellent complement to Alden: he too has layers to go with all his charm. The premise of the book is also fun: an opposites attract, a romance tutor/apprentice dynamic complicated (and enhanced) by the development of feelings— it’s a hard scenario to resist. As an added bonus, there are some interesting supporting characters as well. 4.5 stars.
