I actually did 3 years of sign language when I was in elementary school and picked it up quite quickly. Many of those signs stuck with me, but by no means was I ever fluent. I started doing some online lessons about a month ago, but work got a little too busy to practice consistently. Since this was in a different format, I was more motivated especially because it helps reach my reading goals. I think learning sign language is so important and should be taught in schools. Until then, we as adults can learn and subsequently teach others. The way the signs were described were easy to understand and I like the little quizzes at the end of each chapter to make sure I understood the material although I have to say there were some mistakes with the quizzes but at least I learned and understood the material enough to see the discrepancies. I really liked all of the history included! Not enough people talk about how much of a big problem deaf discrimination is and the fact it wasn’t even acknowledged as an official language by the government till 1960 is unbelievable.

Important Basic Lessons, Missing Videos

This book talks about some important concepts like sentence structure in ASL, the history and culture, as well as how to use your face cues as part of the signs. Definitely important basic lessons.

The hardest part of this book is the sign themselves. It would be great if there were videos in a QR or something to support readers in understanding the motion or a youtube link that takes you to the words/letters/numbers. I had to look up how Eleven-Twenty looked like because they include shakes and twirls that I didnt understand with the books description.

Sign language is so cool

The opportunity to carry on a conversation with a deaf or nonverbal person through sign language is a rewarding experience. Learn ASL for Adult Beginners is all you’ll need to get started. It even made me aware of some very important facts while signing. For example, not following the Five parameters of the language can give it a whole new meaning. A very interesting guide to give you a rewarding experience I would recommend checking out the book. It will teach you a lot.

I needed this

A QR code is provided to access the flashcards of the book which is something I will need to help me learn American Sign Language. I wish I would have taken an American Sign Language class in college instead of French. I love French but I’ve come across more situations needing ASL than French.
At first, learning ASL looks time consuming and intimidating, but so did learning French or learning how to swim. This book makes it easy to learn some basic signs for things we say out loud everyday like, hello, yes, please, and thank you. These basics can be learned in less than a day. I like the “dialogue” section. This gives me something to practice and make mistakes with someone I know.

This book is really well done. I certainly couldn’t learn ASL in 30 days, it would take me that long to learn finger spelling. It covers basic signs that are well explained, so you should be at a basic conversational level after finishing the book. After that, you will need to interact with others. Like learning any second language, this will take time, but this is a good book to learn it from. My favorite part was the discussion of how to be polite in a conversation. Not something you would intuitively know.
