Eagles #3
Talons of Eagles
JOHNSTONE COUNTRY. THE HUNT IS ON.
God did not create enough bullets to keep a man like Jamie MacCallister—forged by an untamed West and a wild New Frontier—on the run.
Raised by the Shawnee, Jamie Ian MacCallister fought his way to manhood on an odyssey that took him from the Alamo to Colorado to the goldfields of California. Now, the United States is divided against itself—North against South, brother against brother, father against son. With his own sons fighting on opposing sides, MacCallister leads his Confederate Marauders into battle from Georgia to Tennessee, from Bull Run to Shiloh.
When the guns of war finally fall silent, a vengeful enemy vows to add another chapter to the bloodstained pages of history . . . by hunting down the soldier named Jamie Ian MacCallister.

The first half is an interesting look at and history of the Civil War through Jamie’s eyes. The second half follows Jamie back to his valley pursued by an army of enemies. A dramatic showdown and a shocking ending finishes the book and will have readers racing to find the next book in the series.

Would have been a 4 star book but Johnstone filled in with too much history of the Civil War. Not just as experienced by Jaime, but plain history, some actual, some fictionalized. Military screwups, personality conflicts between generals, both sides. That took up almost half of the book.
More blood feuds between Mac Callister's old enemies and Jaime take up a lot of the action. Cameo appearance by a young Smoke Jensen, the subject of another Johnstone series.

I have read many of a book, many not included on my list, and I will say the writer is a great writer; but he could have allowed the main character and his wife peace from hate and lived the rest of their life out together. I am finished reading his work.

Great story
Excellent story. I liked how it tied the MacAllisters in with characters from some of the other Johnstone series'. Mr. Johnstone is a consumate storyteller.

I am always amazed by the scope and span of the MacCallister books. This family is tremendous, what they go through is heartbreaking, and what they still have to face is daunting. I need to start the next book now!

Good!
I did not finish this book because if there was ever a war to hate it is the Civil War. It should never have been fought!

Started with a historical fiction re-run of the American Civil War. Then it got better.

The best reads
I love all of WWJ books but I think the Eagle series is one of the best I have read so far. I love the family setting. Full of lovable characters and action packed.

I like a good western. This crossover into a history series not so much. Here is a story of the Civil War. Not what I was looking for. I'm done with this series.

Heart of an author
The heart and soul of the author always show in their work. It was so disappointing and disgusting to read what this author thinks of black people.

First part is about the Civil War, the second part is like a long never-ending story of murder and mayhem.

Loved the historical fiction aspect most about this book. Additionally, that all the mountain men including preacher and a young Smoke Jensen.

good story
This is a good series but a little heavy on the historic facts. Good characters and lots of action and adventure

I enjoyed this story and the concentration to detail and references to historical was very well done. I am just always taken aback by super-hero type characters, and while a Civil War/Wild West tale, Jamie Ian could just have easily been named James Bourne. Good read though.

Another great western series by Johnstone. This one follows the adventures of a family for generations as they help build the American frontier. Recommended

Another fine book by Johnstone. Jamie Ian McAllister is BADASS. Don’t agree with him fighting for the south tho. But badass nonetheless.
