Switched at Birth

Rate this book
What happens when two souls meant to live their life together are separated at birth? Would fate find a way to reunite them, where they fall in love without knowing their lineage?

Could fate be that cruel? This is the question posed at the start of a story so complicated no one could predict how these men would find their way back to one another.

This is the story of Noah James and Ashton Brooks. Noah was born as a twin, with his brother Liam, leading an everyday life with wealthy and loving parents. Ashton was raised by a single mom. Even though Noah and Ashton always knew love, their lives were in complete contrast until they met and shared a chemistry that transcended time and understanding.

Trigger warning-biological brothers.

2.5

This book started out pretty damn promising. And in essence it had a really good premise, but the execution was terrible. If this book were properly edited - and I mean really proofread, beta-read and thoroughly edited, this would be a 5* story for sure.

🔴 Taboo - twincest
🟢 Both MMCs openly gay
🔵 Poor/wealthy
🟣 Insta-love
🌶️ Great sex, but the dialogues and sex talk cringey

The story is about Noah and Ashton, two identical twin brothers who were switched at birth. Throughout their lives they come across each other a couple of times, but they have a short interaction and nothing drastic happens. Noah is raised in wealth and Ashton lives in poverty.

When they're 25 years old, they're both aspiring artists, with Noah being a really well-known, established artist and Ashton still studying and getting there, but they both have a connection to an art gallery, where the owner of the gallery sets them up on a blind date.

Noah and Ash have an immediate connection, it was sweet and believable, so they fall into a relationship right away, they get very serious about each other and after a year of dating and moving in together, they get married.
A year after that they adopt 3 kids and a few months later their life implodes with them finding out they're actually related.

The storytelling was terrible. It needed polishing - you know, like the "Ash's hair glistened like polished shoes". Yeah, that kind of polishing.
The terms and figure of speech used in this book is completely outdated so unless you pretend this book was written in the 80's or 90's, you won't be interested.

These guys were identical twins. Ashton was a bit shorter, just a little bit, but in general they had extremely similar features. So one would ask - how the fuck didn't they notice something was off?? Not to mention Ashton met Noah's parents and in all that time that they've dated, got married and lived together, noone cared to point out that hey, you guys are really brothers, so how about not getting married?

The other crazy thing was for Noah to believe that Noah's official twin brother Liam - a ginger who didn't resemble anyone in the family, noone at all - was his twin. Like, how stupid do you have to be? You're from money, living in the USA and not even once did you think to do a DNA test? That's weird, to put it mildly.

Another completely not-believable part of this story was for Noah and Ash, both 25 year old gay men who are particular about their art, work crazy hours and have just started their journey together and decided to get married - to suddenly decide to become foster parents. Who does that? So soon and At 25? With just a year into being married and 2 years of knowing each other now suddenly adopting 3 kids? Wow, the insanity!

Both Noah and Ashton were portrayed as men who are at least 10 years older. They're not 25 in this book, not at all. The way they were talking to each other, the nicknames they used and how they spoke about their relationship reminded me of a weathered couple in their late 60's sitting on a porch outside of their house and reminiscing, definitely not a young, vibrant, creative couple who's living the good life.

Noah and Ash kept calling each other by their full names - like name and surname - and when they got married, they kept referring to each other as "husband of mine".
Ash honey, Noah honey - that's what they were saying to each other ALL THE DAMN TIME. Imagine the cringe, my god. If all the "honey's" were left out, the dialogues would be so much better, they'd be at least digestible.

The story had potential, it really did and the further you go into the book, the less you're invested, some parts as so cringey that I completely lost interest and when the big conflict of them being related came at about 80%, I gave this book another chance to redeem itself and really bring it home, but what happened was absolutely terrible and destroyed everything that the story was building up for the whole 80%!
That whole conflict was atrocious. Noah, who was an amazing character in this series, suddenly became a horrible villain with a complete personality change. Where was the attentive, fantastic guy? Where was Ash's wonderful husband? He vanished and never came back.

When Noah found out Ash is his twin, I thought they were both going to get the news properly with all the explanations and everything, but Noah simply abandoned Ash and the kids, moved out and wanted a divorce with completely forgetting everything that they had and built.
I can understand being shocked and wanting to leave, but this guy was a total asshole about it. Whatever these two had going on was lost. Gone. I thought sure, it's understandable he doesn't want to be married anymore, but they're still brothers and - twins! But not even that was important to this motherfucker, he simply left.

At the very end of the story, like at the complete end, Noah decides to come back just because he gets the intel that Ash could be going on a date. He gets jealous and comes back. Tadaa.
The developments in the book mostly reminded me of some of the m/f books I've read, because this shit is exactly what you get with most of those romances. Marrying that young, kids immediately, everything toxic and the guy being an asshole who gets a free pass when he finally decides to come back out of pure jealousy that the abandoned parter might move on.
What a disappointment, really.

🌶️ The sex was good and the smut that was working for some time, but very quickly lost its charm.

"I'm going to come, Ash baby," I groan.
"Come, Noah. Show me how much I affect you."

"Oh, I know how to use my fingers, baby." His head pops up, and there's a sensual flame between us.
"Yeah, you do, stud."

"Yeah, I'm that confident, my good sir, that I'm going to fuck that ass again, and most likely today."
"Oh, we'll see how that confidence plays out, my good sir," he mocks, throwing my words back at me.
"You are my good sir, and a good piece of ass, and a bossy but sexy bottom, and you do this thing with your tongue I'm rather fond of."

And while they were getting down, they were asking each other the most mundane questions, you know like one is fingering the other and saying "Hey, what did you do for Christmas when you were kids?" And they guy getting fingered would say "Mom would make us hot cocoa!"
I'm not kidding, it literally happened!

What started out completely promising, quickly got out of hand and the cheap porn plot mixed with low-grade romantic plot came into play.
The conflict - the most important thing in this book - is not handled well and there was absolutely no satisfaction for me reading a genre I really, really like.

No romance, no devotion, no love, none of that sweet forbidden feeling for already having a solid relationship and finding out you're even more connected than you thought, no. There was a hate-fuck that happened as a way of dealing with it (which could be fine if they stuck together after) and their private life crumbled to the ground with me wondering if the kids were the reason Noah came back, because Ash sure did mention them a lot. It's something that vividly reminds me of m/f relationships in books and emotional extortion, so I have a sour aftertaste after reading this book.

No, thank you and this author's writing and storytelling isn't convincing enough for me to try out other book, ❗BUT I will read Liam and Tia's story. Yes, I will. They're the biological brother and sister in this book and have been together for a year after they find out they're related. Liam, a complete player, decides to propose prior to finding out he's Tia's brother, so you're damn right I'll be reading their story.

Switched at Birth is a fascinatingly forbidden taboo romance between Noah and Ashton, who are twins switched at birth that meet as adults and have an instant connection that quickly morphs into a romantic attraction that affects their lives in ways neither expected.

What I loved about this story is how as the reader you are fully aware of the situation between these two brothers and I kept waiting for the fallout of that discovery, which does not disappoint. Their relationship develops rather quickly due to their insane connection and chemistry with one another. You can tell that are both utterly smitten with one another and neither fully understand why they are so devoted and connected to one another.

Eventually, truths are revealed and this aspect of the story is raw, intense, and does not disappoint in emotional depth. I devoured this story from beginning to end and could not get enough of these characters and their impossible predicament. Such a beautifully intense forbidden romance that I enjoyed immensely. Cannot wait for the next entry in the series.

This is the first book I read by this author. I knew when I got it that it was a taboo story, but I just couldn't help myself. There was something very appealing in the blurb and I wasn't disappointed.
Noah and Ashton were born twins but they went to different families after a mix up at the hospital. Noah grew up with Liam, his supposed twin, and Ashton grew up on his own with a younger sister. I loved how life kept putting them at the same places, meeting each other over and over to make them go separate ways afterwards.
What a beautiful story, right from the beginning I fell in love with Noah and Ashton. Once they met there was no other way for them to live but together. Fate played an important part in their lives and their love was so profound, pure and unconditional that it made me cry a few times. They felt the connection from the moment they met and it was beautiful to witness how their lives went after that.
I didn't really care about them being biological siblings, their feelings were authentic and truthful. They built a life together full of love, life and happiness. They were meant to be together and there was no way for me to have pictured them differently.
Yes, this book is about a taboo relationship, but love conquers all, right? I liked this story because it showed that sometimes social conventions are only on our minds. If two people are happy together, who has the right to tell them they can't be? So yeah, I enjoyed and loved this book very much, it was lovely and emotional and it made my heart swell with love. I truly recommend this novel.

Noah and Ashton are separated at birth but don’t know it. They’ve bumped into each other several times throughout their lives without realizing, but don’t make a real connection until a mutual friend sets them up on a blind date.

After that Noah and Ashton pretty much become inseparable, their chemistry is off the charts, and the pair eventually marry and adopt some children. They don’t learn they’re related until an accident happens and the truth comes out.

I’m not gonna lie, I skimmed a lot of this just because it felt really repetitive until you hit part three, and then everything is OTT and wild.

▪️About this book:
-MM Romance
-First Person Dual POV
-Taboo
-Unconventional Romance
-Biological Brothers
-Soulmates
-Hurt/Comfort
-HEA

▪️Thoughts:
This is a new to me author and y'all this book was intense and very good. Before I say more about Switched At Birth I just wanted to comment this is taboo and a very unconventional romance, there are warnings (biological brothers), in conclusion this book is not for everyone.
The relationship between these two characters, Noah and Ashton, is strong and the bond they share is unique. The pull they have for one another only they can comprehend, it is something they feel deep to their soul. They both feel and see the world differently together and it is expressed in such a way I felt there's no one else for them but each other.
What they feel is represented in the form of art, their happiness, their love story, and their raw emotions either good or bad are painted for everyone to see. Ashton had a different life growing up compared to Noah. Ashton and his sister were raised by a single mother who worked extremely hard for her kids.
Noah and his twin brother were raised by his father and mother who gave them anything and everything they could provide. The relationship each character has with their family is so sweet they love fiercely. Each parent in this scenario loves their child/children unconditionally we see that over and over again in many forms, it's honestly beautiful.
Not going to lie this book made me sweat because the last 20% my gosh I was so unsure of what was going to happen. I mean so many things hit the fan at once and I didn't know which way to look at because it was just a big cluster of a mess. But rest assured the ending it does have a HEA and I loved it, some things I did see coming others I didn't.👀
Overall it was a great book, I really loved the relationship Noah and Ashton have their bond, unconditional support, and their feelings for one another are described in a way where there's no way they can not be together, their a unit in many ways that are not even imaginable.

▪️Quotes:
💬 My arms tighten around his waist like I’m the predator and he’s my prey. But he’s not running. He wouldn’t get far. I’d follow him. Our pull is magnetic, and my need for him is overpowering.
💬 This is about closeness, and how we both find inspiration in the other. Sharing my art with him is an act of intimacy in and of itself. After all, anyone can see my body. But no one sees inside my soul, except for him.
💬 There’s not a person in this world that compares to Noah. There won’t be. I’ve never believed in destiny before him, but from the beginning of time, we’ve been meant to grow old together, even before we breathed our first breath.

I received this book as an ARC, this is my honest opinion.

I would have liked it, if not for the way the story was executed.
I just don't get it... How can a mother let them marry KNOWING they are twin brothers??
And the dad turned out to be a bad guy in the end🙄

***beta read***

Why do you need this book in your life:
🏳️‍🌈 Taboo and forbidden in a way that will taste your boundaries (hint : look at the name)

🏳️‍🌈 Noah and Ashton are couple goals. Two artists who crossed paths over the years but fell in love later. Noah being the famous one and Ashton being the upcoming one. From first meeting they have this intense connection and explosive chemistry.

🏳️‍🌈 All the hotness! This is the hottest book I read from Leigh Lennon. Hands down. Noah and Ashton are just so dirty and filthy and hot together!! Caution don't read in public place.

🏳️‍🌈 The twist! It is going to break you! The angst in this story is on point. So many complicated heartaching feels! Noah and Ashton beat every odd and show that love is love is love and it conquers everything!

“I plan to kiss you to my heart’s content for the rest of my life.’

I’ve never read a story like this before and I constantly found myself wondering about where we were going and how we were going to get there. The concept of twins being a switched at birth and finding eachother through a undeniable connection is so unique and intriguing, I couldn’t wait to get to the end to see how it all played out! The love that Ashton and Noah share is so beautiful and pure and they deserved their HEA, 100%!

I really enjoyed the plot and all of the concepts introduced and even though I didn’t always vibe with the writing style and dialogue, I found some of the most beautiful quotes within the pages. I had a great time reading this ARC!

If you love a taboo read with a unique storyline, instalove with a touch of soulmates and lots of feels, definitely give this one a try!

A Joyfully Jay review.

2 stars

While the switched-at-birth trope is not new, I still could not wait to get to this book. However, I struggled with this story from the start. The book opens with twins being born and the lead up to the switch felt weak. The writing style wasn’t for me and I found it difficult to sink into this story, as it felt like it was fighting with itself. The dialogue was repetitive much of the time, reminding me of things that were just mentioned.

This book did not live up the expectations I had when I started and I will look for a better structured switched at birth story.

Switched at Birth by Leigh Lennon is a taboo romance and only available on Smashwords.

Switched at Birth is about Ashton and Noah. Ashton was raised by a single mom, Noah was raised as a twin with his brother Liam by wealthy parents. Both have always known love.

I loved their story. It was sweet, sexy, full of feels and very well written.

Plot and editing were good. The characters and premise were well developed. I went into this book wanting to love it so much. Taboo is one of my favorite genres and novels are hard to find. This author is new to me and unfortunately, her writing style isn’t working for me. I can’t even put my finger on exactly what it was, maybe a formality in the language? Lack of flow? Off-putting descriptors that I’m not used to seeing in MM novels? Whatever it was, it pulled me out of the story multiple times in every chapter. It was very hard to finish the book. I loved the plot and wanted to know how it all turned out though, so I did finish it despite the struggle. I really, really wish it would have worked for me. It’s clearly just a me thing.

Noah and Ashton are twins who - as the title suggests - are switched at birth. Noah grows up with his "twin" Liam, and never suspects anything otherwise. When he's set up on a blind date with Ashton, the two have immediate chemistry and bond over their shared artistic abilities and unusual connection.👀

This might be the most UNIQUE twins book I've ever read. The first chapter is in third person from a narrator's POV, and you learn how the twins were switched before changing to Noah and Ashton's POVs. This would have been an impossible story to tell otherwise, as neither of the twins KNOW they were switched, so I thought this was a brilliant creative choice!👏 I found myself so invested in Noah and Ash's story, and I couldn't wait to find out how they would inevitably learn the truth. And honestly y'all...there were SO many plot twists that I did NOT see coming!😱 I stayed up way too late to finish reading because the last 20% had me furiously turning pages to find out what would happen next!🫣

This was my first read from this author, and I would definitely check out some of her other titles in the future!

If you're looking for a unique twincest story full of sweet and spicy moments and a jaw-dropping ending, this book is for you.🩷

Ash and Noah have a relationship out of a fairy tale. They appear as fated mates destined to be together. There is an instant sexual connection between them but it was so much more than that and they both felt it from the very beginning. I enjoyed watching their relationship develop into something unexpected to both of them. I am not a fan of insta love but this book didn't read that way to me.

I love that Ash and Noah both have a creative side and were able to share that with one another. I enjoyed reading about their paintings and the art show. I loved the scenes of the two of them getting lost in their art and sharing a space while doing it. It speaks volumes when people can share space with each other but not need to interact.

I liked catching little similarities and differences between the two of them. 80% of this book is the life that they build together. I kept waiting for shit to hit the fan but it happened super late in the book and in a way I didn't expect. I wish there was more time given to the drama and the huge reveal. It seemed a little rushed to me. I just wanted more. I did enjoy that little bit at the end though 👌

I read a decent amount of taboo but mostly dark romance. This book was a little difficult for me to get into but once the connection between Ash and Noah picked up I was intrigued. Thank you to the author for providing me an ARC of this book to read before it released!

Am going to find my notes about this one and RTC.
It is very good.

* This was a real ‘what if’ story that could happen and probably already has. I know I’ve read a news story this past year about an MF relationship who found out they are full/half siblings and they had no intention of breaking up. Perhaps it wasn’t a true story, but narratives like this one will have you believing that it could be.
There are twists along the way of how did this happen and a powerful revelation at the end that shocked this reader. It was a story that stayed with me as the writing is excellent. The intensity of the attraction between the unknowing fraternal twins was immediate and powerful. It was beautiful to read and very moving in many scenes. Noah and Ashton are wonderful characters.
There is a dominant twin who leads the relationship into the physical, but it is a mutual attraction. Needless to say that those scenes sizzle with taboo.
There is heartache as secrets come to light, but the book ends on a positive note for the brothers.
I’m not going to be too rah rah for brocest, but if it’s going to be written it should be as well written as this book.
I read this at Kobo.

Wow, what an incredible story of unconditional love and total devotion. Noah and Ash’s story will stay with you long after you’ve read the final page. Also, that ending!!

For all readers of the taboo genre, I definitely recommend this book to you.

Looking forward to book number two, which will be based on two side characters from this amazing story. Hope we get to see more of Noah and Ash in this story too.

This is an interesting and thought provoking story. Noah and Ashton have an instant connection, that actually spans through their childhood, and they fall hard and fast for each other. You can really tell in the writing how much they care for one another, but we as the readers know what’s going on and where this train is going to wreck. Outside the confines of this story I would be throwing up red flags everywhere, but within the story I was rooting for these two all the way and like the last 10 chapters after the bombshell were heartbreaking. The story does wrap up nicely thank goodness, not sure how I felt about chapter 52 though.

For taboo book fans this will be a one you need to read. The book starts by telling us how the babies were switched but as they grew up neither one knows the circumstances of their birth. Noah and Ashton have some sliding doors moments before they meet in person. Two men meet and have an instant connection that grows from a tentative friendship into something they never thought they'd have, a deep passionate love. Honestly as the reader it was easy to forget what we know and just focus on them as a couple. I was waiting for the inevitable to happen, wondering how the author was going to let the secret out. I really enjoyed this story and all the twists that were in the storyline. A taboo read .. definitely but one that was beautifully written.

Wow, I love that Leigh Lennon doesn't run from taboo situations, she slays them like the Queen she is. Holy freaking cow!! I had a sense going into the story of what it was about. But watching it all unfold made those pages fly!! Leigh Lennon has the knack for taking taboo subjects and making them more palatable with lines of gray instead of black and white.

There is no question that Noah and Ashton are soulmates. This truly is a couple that belongs together. The coincidences of fate bringing them together throughout their lives is astounding. As they begin to create the family of their dreams, their world crashes down and the emotions and grief are heartfelt. Two families, truly, become one in this tale that ends in a HEA. Such an amazing story.

My heart is full after reading this. There is no truer love than Noah and Ashton had. The universe played with them from the early ages as they saw each other in passing and as they finally met each other the chemistry between them was extremely explosive.
As readers we knew from the start that this was so so forbidden but the whole story and their connection didn’t feel like the biggest taboo.
I loved every second of this story and I can not recommend it highly enough! Best read I’ve had in a long time! Get your copy, you will not be disappointed!

** major spoilers in my review**

This was a hard read for me and it’s not because of the topic. Which took forever to get to! And was totally unbelievably and unrealistic! It was the writing style of this book. It felt like an older person wrote this book. It also felt dated. The main characters felt older than their ages of 25.

I have a hard time with silly little sayings in books. And a certain way people are described in books. It throws me off. And I have a hard time getting back into the story.

“turning to his profile. His cheekbones are elegantly carved, his lips full. His black hair glistens like polished shoes. He has a gentle nature, maybe a product of growing up alongside two women. Nature versus nurture is always up for debate, but it would be my guess.”

His black hair glistens like polished shoes!

And seriously, my daughter is 26. I have never ever heard her or her friends talk like this at all.

-He quiets me with a kiss, enough for my jolly rod to come out and play, growing against him.

Jolly rod 😳

-Patience, my young Padawan.
-Holy butterfingers in a pecan pie
-Oh, shut the front door
-But fuck me with an eggplant
-Holy shit and popcorn
-Holy fucken heaven on earth
-Baby Jesus in a manger
-Holy shit balls

I hated when Noah called Ashton a bratty bottom. Or when he assumed he was probably a power bottom right when he first met him. And I also hated the scene where Ashton dropped. It came out of nowhere and it felt out of place.

“He’s a bottom. I’d not asked, but I’m not surprised, although my guess is he’s a power bottom.”

“he orders, and of course he orders. He’s bossy bottoming, but unbelievably domineering topping.”

“Did I just go through a drop?” I’d not call us subs or doms, but a drop is exactly what he’s experienced. “Think so, baby. Let me just hold you for a while, K?”

I kept reading. I pushed myself to keep going. Because I really wanted to get to the meat of the story. But you have to wait for a while.

79%. That’s how long you have to wait to find out the truth. And I was expecting this big reveal. Where everyone is shocked and upset. Well, we kinda get that. But it felt off. Turns out the biological mother of Noah and Ashton knew that Ashton was with another family and instead of making things right. She kept quiet about it. Because she didn’t want to loose the son that he was switched with, Liam. And she didn’t want to destroy the other family by taking Ashton away from them. And her loosing Liam. So she made their lives comfortable for Ashton and his mom and sisters. By setting them up with help. Pretend grants and programs to help the mom find a better area to live and help the mom with going to school for a better job. Because they were poor. And Noahs and Ashton’s biological mom had money. So, she made sure to help out her son. Even paying for him to go to college.
The biological parents of Noah and Ashton both came from money. Their parents set up trust funds for the boys. And Evelyn (bio mom) was ok with Liam getting the other half of that money while her bio son Ashton had nothing.
Which is crazy! She knew he was out there struggling and she just let it be.
Living her life like nothing.

The biological mother of the boys knew about them and said nothing! She formally met Ashton when Noah and him were only 3 months into their relationship. And she said nothing to them!

I mean what!!!! That’s absolutely insane!

And what even more crazy, we find out the dad knew from day one about the switch. He saw the ankle bracelets fall off both babies. But instead of saying anything to the nurses. He kept quiet because Ashton had some medical problems and he knew his wife would be devastated if something happened to Ashton. So, he said nothing and let them put the ankle bracelet on the health little boy so that his wife wouldn’t be hurt!

I pushed myself to keep reading thinking ok, I know it’s bad, but I really want to see what happens when everyone finds out. This was not what I was expecting and it made me upset. It was so unrealistic.

I was expecting something a little more serious with this storyline. The pain and struggle of everyone. The toll this takes out of everyone. But this book dropped the ball, big time. Now I just feel like I just wasted my time, forcing myself to read this book.

This story is about Noah James and Ashton Brooks, two men, two artists whose fate got changed when one of them was switched at birth. The title gives as much away so you know it’s coming, it’s like a reverse cliffhanger. You know it will but not when and not how it will hit. The anticipation that it gives to a story is thrilling. Now I have to be honest, I hated it when it did. I knew it could be bad, but this was not what I expected nor wanted. As soon as it hit, I could not put the book down anymore, I had to know how it ended. I had to find that HEA again.

Even if this book is taboo, no one can deny it’s not a beautiful story. Two souls who keep finding each other because they belong together. Choosing not to conform to society’s standards but to choose an all-consuming beautiful love that transcends the laws of men.

And just hang on for that cliffhanger/plot twist at the end! Wow, I did not see that one coming. I can’t wait for Tia’s and Liam’s story.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
