While I usually tend to gravitate towards the gory and gruesome, I picked up vol 1 and 2 of this series at ALA and... wow. Just wow. I read them both within 24 hours and went back to the publishers booth to rave about how much I LOVED these books. Several times. Yes, the overly enthusiastic girl vacillating between blood splatter and fawning compliments over this series was me.
Of course the storyline will hook you. Girl's beloved dog dies. Girl travels to the underworld to retrieve said dog. How many of us dream about doing just that when our furbabies pass away?
But what I did not expect was the level of storytelling expertise that I experienced on this journey. The humor was laugh out loud funny, the plot was full of clever twists and interesting sidebars, and the character development and dialogue was delightful. The artwork is fantastic as well.
I cannot recommend this series enough. Read them. Do it again. And then spread the word.
In book two, our little band continues their quest, but now they have a new focus. Danni still wants to rescue her dog, but far more important is the need to rescue Sammy, kidnapped by Hades. This series is amazing on so many levels. It is short, but packs a huge punch. The author is faithful to mythology and doesn't shy away from darker topics. The scenes with Charon absolutely blew me away. I've been a Mythology fanatic my whole life and read countless books. I found this one wholly original, engrossing, and touching. What a movie this would make!
