Heroic Faith: How to live a life of extreme devotion

Rate this book

Extreme Devotion strengthened readers through its hundreds of stories of believers throughout history who exhibited courage and devotion in the face of harsh persecution.  Heroic Faith takes those martyrs' life principles and challenges readers to live them out in their own heroic faith.

This encouraging book features a chapter on each of the principles such as self-sacrifice and courage, including some illustrations from Christians who exhibited these characterisitics in their own lives.

Many readers will want both on their shelves - Extreme Devotion as a source of inspiration and Heroic Faith as a guide for living out their own faith based on courage.

The Voice of the Martyrs

The Voice of the Martyrs is a non-profit, inter-denominational Christian organization dedicated to assisting the persecuted church worldwide. VOM was founded in 1967 by Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, who was imprisoned 14 years in Communist Romania for his faith in Christ. His wife, Sabina, was imprisoned for three years. In the 1960s, Richard, Sabina, and their son, Mihai, were ransomed out of Romania and came to the United States. Through their travels, the Wurmbrands spread the message of the atrocities that Christians face in restricted nations, while establishing a network of offices dedicated to assisting the persecuted church. The Voice of the Martyrs continues in this mission around the world today through the following main purposes:
Our ministry is based on Hebrews 13:3:
"Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body."

Another good book from Voice of the Martyrs, this one covering what VOM calls the eight defining qualities of living / having heroic faith. In short chapters, the book covers qualities like endurance, love of God's word, and more.

Overall, a great little resource to remind and teach us that Jesus wasn't kidding when He said we will have trouble, and to give us some insights into dealing with that truth in the modern age.

My only question was the price for the book. $12.99 seemed a bit much for a small book, even though it does have those fancy page ends and such to make it look like an old tome of some kind. I bought mine at a used bookstore for $4.50.

"Obedience is not a gift or a God inspired trait. It is a choice that we must make every day. Obedience contains no "ifs". When obedience leads to trouble, a hero has the faith to know who will lead him or her safely through the trouble. Heroic Christians do not have to be brave or fearless; they have to believe God and then act on that belief with obedience, totally depending on Him."

Half of the chapters are slow and boring, and the other half are interesting. This was a good Bible study book, with lots of things to discuss.

I've discovered Voice of the Martyrs this year and have been delving into their publications and learning more about persecuted Christians worldwide. This book was an excellent, powerful read.
The chapters cover the topics of perspective, dependence on God, love of God's word, courage, endurance, obedience, self-control and love. Each is full of testimony and experiences of martyrs, missionaries and agents for Christ around the world. At it's core, this book is how to live like Jesus and truly serve people. I was moved and inspired by each story and confronted by my own failures, sins and the ways I don't measure up to what God has called each of us to do in this world. I highly recommend this book, which can be found on Hoopla as well as in physical and ebook form elsewhere.
