4.5 Nothing’s-gonna-stop-me-from-claiming-the-bride stars
Not even the groom… the groomsmen or his family 😅. That’s one way to make an entrance 🤷🏻♀️.
It’s Lucretia’s (19?) wedding day, a forced marriage, one she doesn’t care to be a part of. She’s at the altar, ready to say her vows, when Mateo (late 20s) comes in, with all his men, and starts un aliving people, including the groom.
And then he takes his spot and forcibly marries Lucretia after he agrees to pay her father 3x’s the bride money.
He wants her so he’s gonna have her 😉.
Meanwhile, Lucretia can’t believe everything she’s witnessed.
If only she knew all the reasons for why Mateo did what he did 👀.
What I liked/loved: possible spoilers
—the 🔥. Mateo takes his time to finally claim his v bride. Makes sense… I kind of found this sweet 😅🤣. Of course, he has some marking to do 👀- yeah. You know what I mean 😉. Good thing Mateo has some magic hands 😉. I love that he takes the time to prepare her 🥵 before the fully claims 🔥 (at about 67%). As he should 🤷🏻♀️
—Mateo’s refractory period. It seems to only lasts seconds. Good for you Lucretia 👀. Not me being jealous over here 😒
—the tension. Since it’s on the medium/slow burn side, I appreciated to buildup 😉
—hide and seek. Ermagod. This scene was fuuuuun 😈. It almost became a primal play scene, but… womp womp… it didn’t go there. Too bad. Soo much potential 👀
—how obsessed Mateo is. He’s been wanting her for a while 😅. Good. I love me a dedicated H
—how protective he is. He has more of the big picture compared to poor Lucretia. Because of that, she needs to learn to trust him
—touch her and d!€ 💅. No one touches her but Mateo 🤷🏻♀️. Don’t cry about the consequences when you don’t follow the rules
—JP in all its glory. Don’t look at my woman please 💅

—development between the “I hate you” to the “I love you”. I understood why/how it happened, but I needed more of it on page. I felt like I was going like this🤔 when things changed. Maybe having more on Mateo before the book begins and how he picked Lucretia? Or an extra chapter transitioning to when feelings changed.
—I wish it was longer

Celia Aaron totally delivers with a super hot, forced marriage mafia read with tons of action and some great twists! Lucretia thinks she's in the clear of the mafia life she's always wanted to escape when she's allowed to go to college. That's all yanked out from under her when she's sold off to be married against her will. Her life has an even bigger plot twist when her "fiancé" is murdered at the alter and Mateo Milani forces her to marry him instead as part of a revenge plot/vendetta.
I really enjoyed this story and I wasn't sure that would be the case in the beginning since the two MCs both took a while to grow on me. The story is well written, fast paced, and written with almost a NA feel to it, rather than just the dark romance I was expecting. Lucretia is in her early 20s and while I don't think Matteo's age was mentioned, he acted pretty young too. Super volatile. Emotionally all over the place. But he definitely grows on you as you learn more about what drives him. Lucretia seemed a little "poor me" at first, but she definitely finds herself and her backbone as the story goes along and as she finds her place and her people. I ended up falling in love with both of them and how they were together. Matteo was definitely obsessed with Lucretia and his stalkery tendencies made great cannon fodder by his friends and family, lol. There was an awesome cast of side characters as well. LOVED his brother and how he seemed to balance Matteo out. The romance was a slow to medium burn and while he did torment her from the beginning, it wasn't the dubcon you typically see in captive/forced marriage stories. Definitely different. Definitely enjoyed. Definitely recommend!

Poor poor Lucretia she was brought back by her snobby, abusive parents to be forced into a marriage she has no say in. Before she could say anything, mayhem happens, people are killed, blood is spilled, and another man is marrying her. Mateo is cold, dominant, and wants revenge against a few families that wronged him. And now he has his bride she hates him already, but he doesn't care it's all a part of his plan. To break her and humiliate her. He says the stuff, but all he's done is make her dress in short stuff and tease her. He does scare her a few times.
The chemistry is hot between the 2. I wish we had more primal play between them too.
He started caring more when she was hurt, and boy did he make that man pay no one touches his woman. We saw a softer side of Mateo, and I loved it. He was still a rough jerk, but lord he took care of her.
I love lito and the rest of the guys!! They were an amazing group. I wonder if the rest shall get stories??

Nothing I haven’t read before. Actually felt like reading a Natasha Knight mafia romance. But this was exactly the pick me up I need.

The hero was okay but the heroine was a cardboard cutout with the personality of a kitchen rag. There was zero relationship development, we basically go from him being a cartoonish mafia guy to being completely in love with her from one page to the next without any transition. It was a quick read and had some good moments but I skimmed a lot. Even the smut was boring probably because I wasn't invested and they had no chemistry at all.

Something was missing, i can't put my finger on it...maybe i needed more connection between them? i felt like Lito had a bigger bond with her than Mateo. Dunno.

🟥I HAVE to say that CA is a pro , maybe even the best at writing Anti-Heroes.
✅I have NEVER EVER wanted to slap and kiss the shit out of the same guy before now.
💀I ALMOST dnfed this.
✅I mean..... Matteo was SO RUDE , egoistical, judgmental, and....
✅I think CA is one of those few authors in my list, who never writes a bad book.
✅I've read Butcher before, and MAN if that book wasn't exciting.
✅In this book , First few chapters, he treats her like shit dude.
😶And I am suprised actually that she didn't slap him. Not once. I mean, yeah, one time she was about to and then he caught her wrist. Totally a TV-worthy moment.
✅But, I personally feel that she should have fought him more. You know....been more sassy.
✅Give him the medicine of his own taste.....GIVE HIM THE TASTE OF HIS OWN MEDICINE.

Celia Aaron is one of those authors whom I read years ago, then kind of lost touch with. But I still remember the way they drove me crazy with their books. I ran to sign up for this book the moment I saw it because even though it had been years since I read Celia , I knew she would not disappoint me!!!
Mateo was 🤌🥹💗 Not to mention the steamy scenes in this book were to die for. Matieo totally started off as an anti hero who wanted everything for himself to a man willing to sacrifice everything to save his wife. Ughhh. I love such forced arranged marriage romances lmao.
Definitely recommending this one to all the dark romance loving people out there.

Celia Aaron's stories are always sexy and edgy. Devil's Captive was no different. I enjoyed the enemies to lovers vibe between Mateo and Lucretia. I absolutely loved the hate-filled tension between them and how their relationship shop eventually evolved into a loving one.
Overall the banter in this story was straight fire! I loved the tumultuous tension between them and how they both were drawn to one another despite the bloodshed and betrayal in their family history. To me the best part of this story was Luto. He was just everything!

3.5 Smut-Scale Stars!
Lucretia is being forced down the aisle to align Mafia families and her window of freedom is closing the closer she gets to the altar. On the edge of despair, Mateo comes in guns blazing and takes her for himself. He means to use her as revenge on her family for the pain they caused. Predictable? Definitely.
However, I enjoyed it nonetheless. Mateo was brutal, cruel, and hell bent on making people pay for the wrongs they caused his family. I hated him at first but fell in love with him when he realized the place Lucretia would end up playing in his life. His character development was well written but I would have liked a little more sexual tension between him and Lucretia. The “hate” part didn’t last long enough for me. It felt more like hate to instalove rather than hate to love.
Lucretia - I loathed her at first. I thought she was whiny and weak. She did slowly come around and get some steel in her backbone. But I think Mateo made this story.

It's a good read for insta-lust, predictable storyline and some steam. The writing is good, familiar and fits well as a palate cleanser. However the steam was a bit boring here for me and there wasn't enough character development. And walks a very thin line between pedictable plot vs under-developed plot..

I can happily declare the author doesn’t fall into the usual clichés or grandiose scenarios so easy to come across every time the mafia world is involved; preferring to focus on the characters and their relationship she gives space to the growth and development of the story. Told in dual POV the fast paced writing adds pleasure to the reading experience.

This is a very generic mafia book.
It was entertaining enough that I finished it but I struggled with the characters a lot.
The MMC was an ass for a really dumb reason. If I’m going to read a story about a character hell-bent on revenge, it needs to be for a good reason. And taking your frustrations out on someone because you’re mad at their parents, in my opinion, is just ridiculous. Especially when you know those parents have abused the victim you are now abusing.
The other problem I had with this book is for the main male character, his character did a complete 180 out of nowhere. It felt like I was reading a completely different character about halfway through the book when he decided to love and cherish the main female character. It was absolutely bizarre. It wasn’t a Slow progression into loving his new wife at all.

Mateo was probably one of the most likeable bad guys I have read. I really liked his friendship with his group of friends/closest bad guys 😆😆 and the ease between them. I liked Lucretia too. And Lito … the gay brother of the mob don … awesome.
Great epilogue. I loved how Lucretia got to follow her dream and how Mateo supported her.

I love this book so much. It made it worth to read because at first the SLOW BURN was getting annoying but after that, it was so freakin romantic and so freakin hot ❤️❤️🥺 I want the hero all for myself🤣 Thanks sonia for the great review about this book because I get back to this book every now and then cause how romantic it is! i didn’t really like her at the beginning because she seemed too weak. In reality she is just too sweet for the world she born into, however when the situation call for it, she has a backbone made of steel.
They are just perfect together: two opposites who attract each other.
And I loved their "bond forged in hate and perfected in love".
Celia Aaron made a great work with the side characters too.
I mean Lito is freaking incredible, and so different from the men you usually read about in mafia romance. Sonny, Benny and Red are amazing just as much.
What I liked about them is the way they treated Lucretia, the way they accepted their relationship. It was refreshing in a certain way.
The mafia part was really good; there was action, violence, need for vengeance, betrayal...and it was well mixed with love story.
In the end the author created something original and intriguing out of tropes we read about often. And I still think about them, so yeah...absolutely recommended!!

you know i like my heroes besotted so I wasn't a big fan of how he treated her in the beginning (because her parents killed his parents) but it kept the beginning of the book interesting and he didn't do anything unforgivable he tried to humiliate her by making her wear a maid's costume but then he proceeded to put her in his lap and feed her so I didn't even take him seriously on this, It didn't last long tho and soon he became the besotted hero that I knew he was pretending not to be. I would have liked more details about the time he stalked her before the start of the book tho.
overall it was a good safe sexy read with a possessive faithful hero and a sweet h.
i will definitely look for more books by this author and i hope she has more books with non-manwhores H and no ow drama.

I missed Celia Aaron's stories so much, she always manages to awaken the deepest emotions in the reader and she is back with one of her best books to date, all the tension between Lucretia and Mateo, gahhhh deliciously hot, intense, steamy and so addictive, Devil's Captive is the perfect mix of dark, spicy and emotion all wrapped up in a good dose of action, it's a captivating journey that gave me all the feelings, I couldn't put it down for a single second.
Mateo is the perfect antihero, a morally gray character that will make you fall at his feet, with his intense way of loving and protecting his loved ones, and his dirty mouth, he is my new book boyfriend, his scenes with Lucrecia are so charged with emotion and passion, intoxicating and deep, pure fire, I just couldn’t get enough of them together, I love them. I love Lito, I want a friend like that too.
This is a raw, emotional and steamy mafia story that will take your breath away, soooo good, but proceed with caution because this is a dark romance that has dark themes and situations not for the faint of heart.

Simple. The H was 🚮. he was complete trash. He humiliates her by making her wear sexy maid outfit in front of his men. then when later on in the book one man takes too much liberty and actually tries to r-word the h... .. he is surprised is men would go against him and threaten her?
“Come on, Mateo. The file you kept on her? The way you practically stalked her for years before you ever met her? And then how you were so single-minded about the plan to crash her wedding and take her from Horatio, no matter the cost?” So he marries her because he wants revenger against her family for unaliving his. But really he is obsessed with her and doesn't want her marrying someone else.
“You told me you trust me.” This AFTER she is harassed by his man, humiliated by him (no humiliation k!nk btw), disrespected and completely isolated by him. The h is a doormat
“How did this go from an ‘I hate her’ situation to an ‘I must give her the perfect wedding ring’ situation? Did all this happen while I was stuck with the feds? Is this what I missed?” Yes how did it? With the length of the book you'd think there would be more development. There isn't.

I loved Mateo….not sure what the says about me because he is cruel, vicious and set on vengeance including taking it out on Lucretia. Trigger warning for humiliation but when he falls….swoon.
Check trigger warnings on this one because it has violence galore. But I loved every minute of it. Just my type of mafia romance. Highly recommend for the non faint hearted.

Je n'ai pas détesté ma lecture, mais je n'ai pas aimé non plus. Lors de mon achat, j'ai surtout flasher sur la couverture et puis le résumé me semblait très intéressant.
Dans l'ensemble c'était bien, mais j'ai trouvé que l'histoire manquait de profondeur et que tout allait trop vite. Le récit se passe sur un échelon de deux à trois semaines et admettons que le syndrome de Stockholm embarque très très rapidement...
J'ai grandement aimé le côté familles mafieuses et les règlements de comptes, mais outre cela, je ne pense pas que j'aurai apprécié ma lecture.
Je vous encourage quand même à vous faire votre propre opinion en lisant le roman et surtout venez en parler ☺️

J'ai grandement aimé le côté familles mafieuses et les règlements de comptes, mais outre cela, je ne pense pas que j'aurai apprécié ma lecture.
Je vous encourage quand même à vous faire votre propre opinion en lisant le roman et surtout venez en parler ☺️

Dark and Twisted
Lies, betrayal, and Murder... So much of it. Matteo wants his revenge for his parents death. He starts by killing people at a wedding to obtain Lucretia.
Taking her was part of the revenge plan as he starts to humiliate her. However, it bites him in the a$$.
For me it was a little slow at first and picked up around Chapter 14. Before that it was like a lot of monologue and not much action.
After that you have full steam ahead. We Find out who really stabbed Matteo in the back. The one person he wouldn't have thought. He also is able to get revenge for his parents. Lucretia finds out who really murdered her brother.
One of my favorite characters was the brother Lito.
