First of all, I have to say THANK YOU to Jonathan Hickman. This is what I have been missing from Spider-man. This is the way Amazing Soider-man should be.
Peter Parker can age, he can mature, and he can handle responsibilities. I love the family man, angle. Peter/Spider-man has always been better with a family and support system. Now, if Peter/Sipder-man can fight like he is supposed to, this book will be perfect.
This is an awesome start to this book. Though I am going to wait for the TPB, I am really looking forward to learning about this Peter Parker (not the useless man-child of post One More Day), and looking forward to Spider-man the way he should be.
A Spidey story that succeeds at being different. It offers something new rather than spinning the same story with a fresh coat of paint. Mostly set up, the drip feed of information and world building keeps readers on their toes and desperate for more.
Amazing new entry for people new to spider man. It completely changes his origin and the threats he will face. Changes from Uncle Ben to how he gets bitten and it all works really well. Excited for #2
A fresh, logical and yet, totally different set-up for our favorite wall-crawler, this first issue of hinting at both was has come before and what is yet to come. The thing that many have lamented in the 616 universe, the end of Peter and MJ as a couple, is alive and well here. Peter as Spider-Man always seemed to get in the way of his relationships in the past. Now, we get to see what happens when Spider-Man enters the picture after a happy, healthy relationship is already present.
A new Green Goblin, Wilson Fisk, Matt Murdock as a priest, Ben Parker alive instead of May… this has all sorts of potential!
Ultimate Spider-Man #1 by Jonathan Hickman is a fresh, heartfelt take on Peter Parker that feels both grounded and emotionally resonant. It’s a quieter, more mature start than expected, but that works in its favor—focusing on character first, not spectacle. Hickman sets the tone beautifully, and it’s clear this version of Spidey is going to be something special. A strong, thoughtful debut.
Something about a man in red and blue tights swinging around really makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Also in this universe Uncle Ben is alive and Aunt May is the one who got clapped, and it’s worth it for the J. Jonah Jameson and Uncle Ben bromance. Don’t know how I feel about Green Goblin being a good guy, hope he does end up trying to ruin Pete’s life over something petty.
While a young Peter Parker is an Amazing character, it is Ultimately satisfying to see him get the chance to grow up and become a mature adult.
In this issue, we are introduced to a cast of likable characters, and the mystery of the changes done to this universe by The Maker. This small glimpse into Peter Parker's world quickly draws you into its web, and I'm X-cited to see what happens next!
The first Ultimate universe in the 2000s was going against the grain by having Peter be a teenager again, and the new Ultimate universe is going against the grain by having Peter be middle aged, married to MJ, have a job, and have kids. Funny how this works out lol.
But you know when you read something, get tingles, goosebumps, just knowing it’s gonna be a masterpiece? Yeah, this first issue did this so well.
It’s not even just the circumstance Peter is in, but MANY different factors, people, and situations which lead to such a refreshing, compelling first issue.
Most importantly, despite Peter having everything his other counterparts who HATE being Spider-Man wish he has, this version of Peter feels hollow like something is missing from his life, he feels this urge to do more for the world. Even in a life without Spider-Man, Peter feels the need to be helpful and heroic for others, showing his strong moral character. It’s so brilliant.
Also, the idea of having a potential future ripped away from you from other factors is such a great concept. Hmmmm, I wonder why this theme people resonate with a younger Gen Z audience in a post-COVID world where the upper class and people in charge don’t give any of us a chance?????
There are very few writers that I am deeply and truly jealous of. Johnathan Hickman is one of those writers. Also, special shout-out to the artist Marco Checchetto. Outstanding work that captured every single emotional beat Hickman was going for flawlessly. If you care about Spider-Man even the tiniest bit, this is quintessential reading. No wonder Ultimate Spider-Man is the number one selling comic right now. It deserves that success and much more. I don't know what you're paying the crew behind this book, Marvel, but it's not enough.
Seeing as it’s just the first issue there wasn’t a whole lot to it yet but it does a great job of setting up the story. Love the idea of Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man when he already has a wife and kids, and the alternate universe is really cool. Also love the art style. Excited for more!!
Ultimate Spider-Man #1 is a refreshing and emotional reimagining of Peter Parker’s origin, written by Jonathan Hickman with heartfelt depth. This version features an older, married Peter, adding maturity to the familiar hero’s journey. With beautiful art by Marco Checchetto, it balances grounded storytelling and superhero charm. A strong, character-driven debut
