Meet Abby Finch. She's the busy mum of three, an expert gardener and the star of your new favourite cozy murder mystery.
Abby Finch heads to the old church hall armed with mistletoe and holly ready to help decorate in time for the festive season. But she arrives in time to witness a horrifying sight. Edward Marsh reaches to test the antique star at the top of the tree. There's a fizz and the lights go out.
Abby hears the sickening thud of a body hitting the ground. When the lights turn back on Edward is dead.
It soon becomes clear it was no accident.
The real victim should have been Gregory Tatton, a dapper silver fox, popular with the ladies of the seniors' lunch club. And a known blackmailer . . .
Abby is desperate to know the truth, but putting herself in danger isn't on her Christmas list.
Who's been naughty? Who's been nice? Who's hiding the fact they're a murderer? Fans of Faith Martin, Jane Adams, Frances Evesham, M.C. Beaton, Clare Chase or Jeanne M. Dams will love this addictive cozy mystery!
Hi, I'm Liz Fielding, and I'm a best selling contemporary romance author with more than 15 million books in print and Katie Fforde wrote, when honouring me with the Romantic Novelists' Association's Outstanding Achievement Award in 2019 said - "Liz Fielding's books, with their warmth, humour and emotion, have charmed millions of readers. She is a true star of the romantic fiction genre..."
And now I've turned to a life of crime with my first cozy mystery. Murder Among the Roses, published on 18 April 2023 - of which Katie Fforde also said, "I was gripped from beginning to end..."
Reading is a big part of my life. I love witty, contemporary romances, not too much sex,, Women's fiction by the likes of Fiona Harper, Julie Cohen, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Jennifer Crusie and Barbara O'Neal. And I love crime fiction that isn't too gory, or focussed on clue hunting, but is big on character.
My best loved series at the moment are the Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths, The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch and the Libby Sarjeant Mysteries by Lesley Cookman. I've just read the first in the Georgina Drake crime series from Kate Hardy and looking forward to the next.

When Abby Finch headed to the old church hall to help set up for the old folks Christmas festivities, she was carrying mistletoe and holly. The decorations were already looking very festive, and getting the lights set up on the Christmas tree was next in line. But with a spark and a flash, the lights went out, a thud was heard by all, and Edward Marsh lay dead on the floor. Gregory Tatton had been meant to add the star to the top of the tree; he was also universally disliked; was it faulty lighting, and was he the intended recipient?
With the police declaring Edward's death was no accident, Abby was determined to find the answers. With Jake currently overseas with his work, but coming back before Christmas, Abby and her three children were busy with the lead up to Christmas activities. Abby was also busy with her gardening business, and it was one thing after another. But when a second person died and Abby was questioned thoroughly by the police, she was determined to find the culprit. But was she putting herself in danger in doing so?
Murder Under the Mistletoe is the 2nd in the Maybridge Murder Mysteries by Liz Fielding and I loved it! The first in the series - Murder Among the Roses - introduced me to Ms Fielding and I know now, this is a series I'll continue with, and hope for many more to come. Abby is a wonderful character, a great mum and friend, and I'm looking forward to more stories featuring her. Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
MURDER UNDER THE MISTLETOE (Maybridge Murder Mysteries Book #2) by Liz Fielding is an entertaining trip back to the small English town of Maybridge for another murder mystery set at Christmas and once again featuring Abby Finch and all her friends. This second book in the series can be read as a standalone, but it is as wonderful as the first and I suggest reading both to get the introductions, interactions, and backgrounds of the main characters right from the start.
Abby Finch is asked to drop off some mistletoe and holly to decorate the church hall for the season. Abby is in time to reconnect with an old high school teacher before he climbs a ladder to place the star on the top of the tree, and with a pop, the lights go out. When the breaker is switched back on, Abby’s old teacher is dead on the floor.
Immediately after giving a statement to the police, Abby is confronted by another senior, Gregory Tatton. She feels threatened by him even though all the senior ladies seem to love him. Abby begins asking questions with the help of some close friends and discovers Tatton was blackmailing some members of the senior’s club as well as prospecting for a third wealthy wife. The electrocution was meant for him, but he does not get away. One of the ladies who cleans for him finds him dead in his home.
Abby is once again questioned by the police when they discover Tatton was killed with ricin from the seeds of castor oil plants which she has in her garden. She is determined to find the real killer before she is implicated. The killer may have other plans though to eliminate Abby and any of her discoveries.
Even though this is only the second book in the series, I already feel at home in Maybridge and I love all the main characters. Abby is a wonderful protagonist and I love that she is so realistic as a businesswoman, single mother, and possibly on the verge of a new relationship with an old friend. The characters are fully drawn and believable and the descriptions of plants and gardens are vivid. The mystery itself has plenty of red herrings and plot twists that kept me guessing because even when I felt I knew the solution, I was wrong.
I highly recommend this cozy holiday murder mystery, the entire series, and this author.
Another awesome story in this series, I loved being back in Maybridge, it is just about Christmas time and Abby Finch is busy, it will be the families first Christmas without their father and Jake is away in Italy, but Abby is always happy to help where she can.
Abby has been asked for some mistletoe to decorate the old church hall for the seniors Christmas lunch, when she drops it in with some more foliage for decoration, her old teacher, Edward is there helping decorate, as he attempts to attach the star the lights go out and Edward is dead on the ground, Abby does her best to revive him sadly with no success, it is not long before they realise that it was not a terrible accident.
Abby is approached by Gregory Tatton, a real ladies man to organize for her help in his garden, but this man does not want to take no for an answer and with Abby asking questions it turns out that this man is a blackmailer and seems to have a lot of ladies and a few men at his beck and call, was it him who should have been the victim not Edward?
Then when there is another death in Maybridge, Abby is questioned by the police and Abby is determined to get answers and uncover the truth, there is a lot going on in this village, but will Abby put herself in danger with her digging?
I loved this story and I am loving this series, Abby is a wonderful character, she is easy to make friends with as are her children and things seem to be moving along with Jake, I was guessing till the end with this one, Liz Fielding had me turning the pages and I really hope there will be many more Abby stories to come.
Thank you MS Fielding for another fabulous story, this one is going on the keeper shelf, and I highly recommend to any reader who loves a good mystery with wonderful characters.
My thanks to the publisher Joffe and Netcalley for my copy to read and review.
Abby Finch, mum of three and busy gardener trying to grow her business, does her best to contribute to village activities. Dropping odd holly and mistletoe at the old church hall to decorate for Christmas, she witnesses the death of a dear friend; was in an accident or was it murder? Abby can't leave it alone - she needs to find out if there is a murderer in their midst ..
I'm sorry I missed the first in this series, but the second one is a very good read. Great characterisation - Abby Finch is easily identifiable to every working mother - and the whole cast was easy to see in my mind's eye. Thinking you know 'whodunnit' and actually being able to prove it are two different things and watching the evidence being uncovered was a joy. I shall certainly be watching out for more in this series. Completely delightful and one I'm happy to recommend. 4.5*.
This is the second Maybridge Murder Mystery from Liz Fielding...I gave her first, "Murder Among The Roses" a five star rating, a novelty for me as I can often find something to irksome as I get into a novel.
This seasonal offering starts low key as we get into the detail of a Parish hall Xmas set up...I'm intrigued by the cover offering of "an utterly gripping cozy murder mystery full of twists"...mainly I suspect because I can't quite work out what a "cozy murder" might be - suffocation by very fluffy cushions perhaps?
Cozy is not electrocution...cozy is not death by poison...so I'm none the wiser BUT I am mightily entertained by Ms Fielding's writing, her cast of characters and the tale they tell...there are twists galore but I think that everything got covered off in the end.
Highly recommended read - good one for the run up to Christmas too...enjoy
I continue to really love this new cozy mystery series! Yes, Abby our lead definitely makes some stupid choices (do NOT interview murderers on your own) but has reasons that make sense given her situation.
The murders were complicated, with numerous potential suspects. I liked that we briefly got to see Izzy from the first book, and hope she appears again in future books. I also like the cautions both Abby and Jake take in dealing with Abby's children, and their grief over the recent death of their father.
Murder Under the Mistletoe by Liz Fielding is a delightful holiday-themed cozy mystery that will capture your heart from the very first page. Fielding has delivered a treasure that brings together elements of suspense, charm, and Christmas spirit in a perfect concoction.
Abby Finch is as relatable as she is endearing. As a busy mother of three, an expert gardener, and an all-around charismatic character, she's the heart of the story. The authenticity of her character make her someone to cheer for.
The story kicks off when Abby heads to the old church hall, armed with mistletoe and holly, to prepare for the upcoming holiday season. However, what she stumbles upon is far from the merry and bright decor she had in mind. The sudden death of Edward Marsh, during the Christmas preparations, casts a dark cloud over the holiday spirit. The scene is supremely set and I felt pulled into the atmosphere. The story paints a festive and suspenseful setting for the unfolding events.
The mystery takes an unexpected turn as Abby begins her quest to uncover the truth behind Edward's untimely demise. Fielding's writing is skillful and engaging. I found myself guessing and anticipating the next reveal with every turn of the page. Fielding meticulously crafted this plot, ensuring that you're hooked from the start and that the suspense builds at a perfect pace.
Abby's interactions with the townsfolk, from Gregory Tatton to the other members of the seniors’ lunch club, add depth. Each character feels fleshed out and brings their own unique charm and complexity. The tensions and secrets that lie beneath the surface of this small town are expertly unraveled as Abby unfolds the threads of the murder mystery.
Fielding kept me so entertained with her witty dialogue, endearing characters, and the warm Christmas spirit that permeates the plot. Murder Under the Mistletoe includes cozy fireside scenes, heartwarming moments, and the magic of Christmas that's smoothly woven into the story.
Fielding's writing provides a heartwarming sense of community and the importance of coming together during the holiday season. She successfully blends the murder investigation with the spirit of Christmas.
Murder Under the Mistletoe is a brilliantly executed cozy mystery that really captures the essence of Christmas and delivers a captivating and well-crafted whodunit. Liz Fielding's writing will warm your heart, tickle your intellect, and keep you on the edge of your seat. This has been the perfect book to cozy up with at the start of this holiday season. I relished in the joy of Christmas cheer and the thrill of solving a murder mystery.
If you love a good cozy mystery this one’s for you. Abby Finch is a single mum of three children and has a gardening business. She’s struggling to get through the holidays with children since this is their first Christmas since the death of their father. Abby is busy with work but is headed to church to drop off some mistletoe and Holly for the old folks Christmas festivities. While there she sees Edward Marsh go up the ladder to put the star on the top of the tree. Why was he up there? He doesn’t like heights. All of a sudden the lights go off. Why? Was their an electrical problem? They hear a thud and when the lights come on they see Edward on the floor. Abby runs over and tries to save him. Sadly he passed away. Everyone was shocked but now the accident is under investigation. Gregory Tatton was supposed to put the star on, so why didn’t he? Everyone is questioned, including Abby. The police suspects it wasn’t an accident. Time to put her sleuth hat on again. Will she find out who did it? Why did they do it? Gregory is causing trouble too. In a roundabout way, he is trying to blackmail Abby. He knows secrets of her ex husband’s family and thinks he can get her to do work for free in his garden. Is he doing the same to others.? When Gregory is murdered, Abby is now trying to figure out who killed both men. Is it the same one? It’s now up to Abby to find the culprit without the police knowing since she is questioned again for the Gregory’s murder. Can she figure it out? Will the children be okay? Abby is a wonderful character. She’s a great mum and always puts her children first over her own, especially having new feelings for Jake, an old boyfriend from the past. The story keeps you guessing. Hard to put it down. It’s well written. Liz Fielding did it again. I received this book for my honest review. I give it voluntarily.
Murder Under the Mistletoe was brilliant! It's a great holiday murder mystery! This was actually my first book by Liz Fielding. I didn't realize this was part of a series so I will go back and read the other one but with that said, you can absolutely read this as a standalone as well! I didn't really feel like I missed much but now some things do make more sense knowing this is book two.
Abby Finch is a fabulous main character who is also super relatable! She has three kids, is a gardener, and is navigating life with her kids after her ex husband's death.
Unfortunately, she kind of witnessed the death of Edward Marsh and she doesn't think it was a mere accident. So she starts to do a little investigating herself. I love the witty conversations between Abby and the other townfolk as she drives deeper into her investigation. I also feel that the author did a great job keeping the story engaging overall. I did find it to take a while to actually get through the book but I thoroughly enjoyed the ride the whole way through!
Definitely recommend this one (but read book one first)!
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review an advanced copy of this book.
This is the second in this series, so Abby Finch has some additional background story that comes before this episode but still comes back to haunt her at every turn. A dead ex-husband, bones found in her garden, and other family nightmares continue to bother Abby and her children.
Abby’s life gains a new nightmare when she is asked to provide some mistletoe for the senior’s Christmas lunch. When Abby is accosted, and basically threatened, by a man who seemed to have all of the women swooning at his beck and call, she finds her easy life to be under threat, again. And when one of the seniors is basically shocked to death when putting lights on the tree, Abby finds herself trying to save a life.
Even though Abby is somewhat friendly with the local police, she tries to solve two possible murder cases herself, with support from some friends, which puts her in danger, as it usually happens.
This was a fun Christmas cozy mystery, and a pleasant read.
I read the book after receiving it as an ARC by Joffe Publishers.
I had not read the first book.in.this series when I read #2 - I have now. I definitely didn't enjoy it as much as I would if I'd had previous knowledge of Maybridge, it's residents and the deceased, as they're mentioned a lot.
I did enjoy the stand alone element of the narrative and the characters introduced. The story running in the background always seems quite weighty, and I guess that's what gives the story a bit.more gravitas than some.others of a similar genre.
I really enjoyed it and definitely will read the next in the Maybridge series.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve decided that cosy mystery is just not for me. I’ve loved so many of this author’s romances and wanted to try her new mysteries. I liked both of them and I think she’s created a great character in Abby.
However, much as it’s well written and enjoyable - I much prefer fewer characters and a lot more romance in a book so I think I’ll not be bothering with more. But it is a well written example of the genre and LF does it very well so I happily recommend this one and the first in the series to all, readers who like cosy mystery.I am sure they’ll enjoy it.
This was a terrific story. It's like the ultimate cozy murder mystery scenario where we have the horror of some deaths with a Christmas backdrop. Abby finds herself in the middle of things again when a man is killed while hanging up lights and a star on a Christmas tree in full view of lots of people. it seems it was aimed at someone else , a man who seems to have an unusual hold over nearly every single person in attendance. A further death seems to make that point even more strongly.
Abby is determined to get to the bottom of things, especially when she finds herself included as a suspect. She has her friend Megan in cahoots and it was really enjoyable learning about all the secrets the whole community seems to have to cause the various forms of blackmail. Abby also has a lot going on in her private life to balance things out. There's several twists also which surprised me and a fitting finale I thought. This is the second book I've read now by this author and both were really good. Hope there's many more to come.
My thanks to Joffe Books for a copy of this and this is my honest review.
Maybe not as good as the first one? This one just didn't have the same emotional impact as the first one did, but then again: Abby didn't have another soon to be ex husband that could end up dead, so all the emotional compexity that was part of the first book, was obviously not present in this one.
Still a cosy Christmas themed mystery though. I will return for book 3.
A festive seasonal cozy Maybridge murder mystery, with a stunning cover Book Two. Who's been naughty? who's been nice? who's hiding the fact they're a murderer. Abby Finch a busy mum of three children and an expert gardener. A fatal accident at the old parish hall in St Barts, leads to the death of Edward Marsh, but this is no accident and this turns out to be the wrong victim. Fantastic book two from this author, that takes your mind on a whirlwind of whodunnit. It's really good and could not fault any of the mayhem going on, with added sense of humour. Absolutely great chapters you wont be abled to put it down. Once again I really hope to read more of this authors work from this sleepy village that never has a dull quiet day, LOVED IT!
Great cosy mystery. Perfect for the run up to Christmas. Abby is targeted by local widower Gregory Tatton, a man who seems to have all the local ladies falling over themselves for his attention, all willing to do things for him. Now he wants his garden done, but implies Abby should do it for free, as they are now friends. Then he is found dead and Abby is interviewed by the police, obviously as a suspect, so she needs to find out what happened.
I liked the first instalment in this series but this one is better: solid mystery that kept me guessing and well rounded characters. The fast paced plot kept me hooked. Recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
The first death was certainly an accident on both counts. The real rotter was a pompous a$$ who was also a serial blackmailer and a serial widower. Abby Finch gets involved even before the real victim turns up his toes, but her garden business and horticultural knowledge nearly put her in the frame in spite of having three school age children. Great cozy mystery with intelligent sleuthing, well drawn characters, and some really wow surprises. This is only second in series but the past is clearly defined. I requested and received an EARC from Joffe Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
I want to thank NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for my honest review as well as the author for this free copy.
This book proved to be the ideal cozy mystery, perfectly timed for the holiday season. I awarded it four stars, primarily due to the abundance of characters, which occasionally made it challenging to distinguish their roles and actions in the narrative. However, I still found great pleasure in the overall storyline and was pleasantly surprised by the revelation of the killer, which I didn't anticipate.
I found the beginning of the story confusing, there’s a lot of people mentioned in the first chapter and it was hard keeping them straight. I had to go back to the beginning and re-read it. It does get less confusing farther in, so I recommend sticking with it. I enjoyed the rest of the story. I admire Abby’s determination to not let Gregory get to her and to find out what is going on even though everyone else thinks it was an accident. I do wish she had be able to prove the wives deaths were murder also. It felt a little unfinished due to that. #MurderundertheMistletoe #NetGalley
A well written story with a very clever plot and a great mystery which kept my interest all the way through and for once I had no idea who might have done it. I didn't realise I had read the first book at the start as there was so much going on but could be read as a stand alone anyway. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The beginning was too busy with the people, parties and Christmas decoration being done to get into the story. Over all it showed the lives of the different people and the murders. Abby was a good character in this story and how she was determined and not let Gregory get to her. Given arc by Net Galley and Joffe for my voluntary review
the beginning had too many characters and too many things going on, which made it difficult for me to really get into. i couldn’t really connect with the flow of the novel either but i did love the mystery element and abby playing detective, as well as the unearthing of new questions and answers. i will definitely have to give this a reread to see what i missed the first time around, especially where i found myself skimming quite a bit at the beginning. while i didn’t like the flow much, i did enjoy the mixture of description and dialogue. and adored all the christmassy parts
Murder Under the Mistletoe is the second book in the Maybridge Murder Mystery series and while I enjoyed it quite a bit, I did think the first book in the series was quite a bit stronger and much more interesting. Abby is a reliable main character and while I understand that she and her family are going through a difficult time, I felt like the author was trying to create drama between her and her new romantic interest, something that didn't need to happen. The mystery was strong enough to stand on its own and so was the family dynamic the author described in this book.
I liked Abby as a main character and enjoyed the relationships she had with those in her community. Due to the circumstances of her ex-husband's death, she has had to deal with some nasty rumours and fallout, but the community has come together to show their support to her and her family. When she discovers that others are being threatened, she realizes there is a whole layer working beneath the town of which she was unaware and soon that threat affects her personally. I enjoyed learning about the other members of the community through her interactions with them as she investigated the murders and really liked the fact she didn't put herself or anyone else in danger by doing so. She just took advantage of the opportunities when they arose. There are quite a few characters in this book and there seemed to be this assumption that the reader was familiar with the first book just by the way the characters interacted, as if you were already on intimate terms with them.
The mystery itself was quite good, but then I like a story about blackmail as I always wonder how far someone will go to protect their secrets, and that is exactly what this book was about. Yes, I was able to figure out the mystery quite early, but enjoyed it for its own sake. I liked how the author intertwined Abby's family issues within the mystery as her kids were dealing with their first Christmas without their dad. I was not a fan of Abby's relationship as I felt like that was unnecessary drama, stirred up for the sake of just adding more drama and the whole thing felt forced. Not my favourite part of the book.
Murder Under the Mistletoe is a good story about blackmail and how far you can push someone before they finally give in under the pressure. It's interesting as I was just watching a new Poirot film about this very same thing, and the result always seems to be the same, desperation. The overall flow of the book was somewhat off, but the mix of dialogue and description was good, and I definitely enjoyed all the Christmas scenes. I do feel that readers would benefit from reading the first book before reading this one however, so go, take a look, and enjoy Murder Under the Roses.
A festive season filled with cheer and holiday spirit takes a chilling turn in "Murder Under the Mistletoe" by Liz Fielding. This cozy mystery weaves together Christmas decorations, unexpected deaths, and a cast of characters with secrets that make the holiday season a little less merry.
It is a November 2023 release by Joffe Books.
Abby Finch is ready to embrace the joys of the season as she heads to the old church hall with mistletoe and holly in hand, eager to help decorate. But her holiday spirit takes a dark turn when she witnesses a shocking and gruesome scene unfold before her eyes. Edward Marsh, an unsuspecting victim, meets a shocking end as he tests an antique star atop the Christmas tree. What begins as a routine decoration endeavor quickly transforms into a murder investigation, leaving the small town in a state of shock and fear.
The mystery deepens as Abby discovers that Edward's death was no accident. Dark secrets and buried grudges come to light as the suspects are revealed, with the enigmatic and charming Gregory Tatton standing at the center of it all. Gregory, a known blackmailer with a way of captivating the senior ladies of the lunch club, becomes a prime suspect in a murder that should have been his own.
Liz Fielding masterfully weaves an intricate web of suspicion, taking readers on a delightful journey through the festive backdrop of the holiday season. The story is filled with a delightful array of quirky characters, each with their own motives, making it an engaging and unpredictable read. As Abby embarks on her quest for the truth, she unearths a series of shocking revelations and dangerous secrets, putting herself in the line of fire.
Despite the cozy holiday setting, "Murder Under the Mistletoe" keeps the tension high and the stakes even higher. The plot is well-paced, with enough twists and turns to keep readers eagerly flipping pages. The writing is crisp, and the dialogue is snappy, ensuring an enjoyable reading experience.
Author Liz Fielding creates a compelling holiday-themed murder mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end.
