When an Undergrounder turns 13, they must view the Above and choose to forget… or remember. Before Leon Gains can reach Decision Day, sickness reaches his peaceful village. To save his people, Leon must join Gage, a boy who claims to have survived the Above, and go to the Void: where legend says the healing light is locked away.
Thrust into a world of dark tunnels, hungry monsters, unlikely friends, and the possibility that his village has lied to him about the world as he knows it… Leon risks everything for a chance of saving his family.
But if the legends are wrong, or if Leon can’t survive the underground, his village will be lost. Can Leon unleash the light, or will he be lost to the darkness?

The only way I can really describe this book is: delightful! An amazing adventure story about finding truth and escaping darkness. Excellent for middle grade and younger readers but fun and cozy for adults too!
Leon Gains is for the readers who love The Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins. It's a high stakes middle-grade fantasy about young Leon and his quest to save his underland tribe from a strange sickness before it's too late.
In a powerful display of light versus darkness, Leon must brave monsters in the caves to reach the daylight of the void. The story is fast-paced and filled with age-appropriate action and monsters, keeping its readers on the edge of their seat.
I've always enjoyed Watts' storytelling style because of the assurance that light will always overcome the darkness and The Legacy Books are no exception. This is a series I'd hand to middle-graders without hesitation; there's no cursing, suggestive content, or gore (if your reader is sensitive to monsters in the dark, proceed with caution).
I'm anxious to continue reading this series and these will have a permanent place on my library shelves.
