The Tempest Sea

Rate this book
A rescue mission turns into a fight against a force more powerful than they could have imagined.

With the amulet still stuck around her neck, Addie must outwit her powerful captors who will do anything to get to the power held within the ancient artifact. If they find out she doesn’t know how to use it, she’s dead.

Meanwhile, Clark and a ragtag team of Addie’s friends dive into a strange and dangerous world as they pursue those who took her. High-tech pirates, ruthless societies, and terrible secrets bombard them on their journey.

As they discover more about their world and about each other, friendships are tested and trust is strained. Can they do what must be done without breaking the bonds that held them together for so long?

The Tempest Sea continues the journey of The World Apart Series with everything that made The Fractured Empire so engaging: action and adventure, an ever expanding world to explore, and a story pulls at your heartstrings while keeping you on the edge of your seat.

4.25 ★★★★✩, screaming for more
This book is for you if… you didn't manage to block Gunther out of your mind for even a minute after finishing the first book in this series. He's the best, and softest, and kindest, and most badass fella, ever. There's also some delicious - and slightly exhausting - banter between Addie and Clark and everybody is in grave danger because of some crystal, but we all know that's not what this series is about. TW: sexual assault.

Overall.
Remember how I introduced my donkey-friend a while ago in my review for The Huntsman? Let me give you a little visual of our second adventure together:

Yeah, so, after some starting problems Robin threw me right back into her fabulous bookverse, where I could enjoy plenty of Gunther to keep me happy, content and safe. The critique from book one, where I noticed instances of a disrupted plot totally vanished, which made me very happy. In my opinion, the book did a great job in diversifying both the characters we already know and the cast in general.

My investment in The Tempest Sea was 100% and it did not disappoint. We have an entire ship-crew made up of beautiful, strong, Black women. We have a fat cat that trolls the feisty boys. We have Gunther, an incredibly kind and soft soul. We finally meet the general and see whether he actually fits the image we have of him over the course of the last book. We have two best friends finally together again. There's also Gunther, the deaf genius with the emotional intelligence of a herd of elephants (If you think this is a joke, read something about the emotional span of elephants). There's also some family-trouble as Clark and Gunther have to deal with feelings of betrayal. Xavier has to question his motives while I have to question whether I really couldn't jump into a book to save my Gunther from whatever but most of all the potential love interests who might take him away from me. And, finally, we can pick up practising the 'heiress expression' alongside Addie again. I'm confident to have mastered it by the end of the next book. Lots of good stuff here, obviously.

I did however felt very much annoyed with Addie while reading The Tempest Sea. Although I fully respect her traumatising experiences, I just couldn't stand the way she kept denying both her own and Clark's feelings. Her self-denial got too much at one point. I swear, I even considered putti g together a tinder profile for Clark so some of my girl- and boyfriends can do him some good. (yeah, I know he's "fictional" [eye roll]. Eat me, haters.)

I still cannot wait to read the third instalment, The Forgotten World (I already started, actually) and honestly hope there are many more books to come. [gestures at Robin that she's under close surveillance.]

What’s happening.
With this new instalment of The World Apart series, we can finally continue Gunther's story. Betrayed by his brother and afraid for his friend Addie, he's still the gorgeous, fluffy, soft man we all came to love in the first book, in which he clearly was the actual main character. Together with his brother, an injured Neml, a prisoner and his brother, he sets out to right Xavier's wrongs...Okay, yeah. So, for reasons of "perceived accuracy" - which I am sure will one day be diagnosed by neuroscientists - all the deeply misguided folks out there who - for some unexplainable reason - think this series is not about my precious Gunther, would claim the one is not entirely correct. So let me write something more irrelevant accurate.
‘”You’d be a fun one to tame, wouldn’t you?” Addie laughed. “What, with your vast knowledge of the opposite sex? I’ll let you in on a little secret. Women prefer men, not little boys so scared they have to silence female voices to feel like men at all.”’

Queen Addie is back. Not even an abduction keeps her from putting on the heiress expression while simultaneously sassing her way out of every situation. A prisoner on board the General's/Master Yomi's ship, Addie has to face the unpleasant reality that she might not make it out of there unharmed. Between the traitor Xavier and a guard that gives off definite rape vibes, it's hard to stay positive, especially when the heavy swell brings meals back to the surface faster than she can actually swallow them.
Con:
trapped and no allies in sight
would switch this for company of cockiest man alive any time
only woman on a ship full of men
Pro:
allies not as far behind as she thinks
feminist pirate ship = incredible asset
Gunther.

This book... oof. It hurt. But if you know me at all, you know my favorite books are the kind where I can say, "This book destroyed my life. You should read it." And this one definitely fits. This world Robin has created just blows my mind. It's so original, and the story never dulls, always keeping my attention and making it hard to stop reading. I absolutely love Addie and Clark, as well as his brothers, Xav and Gunther. And once again, the writing is wonderful. It's so easy to read and get lost in this world!

This book pulls no punches! With none of the slow start of the first book, it continues on where that one left off. It is a beautiful and tragic rollercoaster of adventure and real emotions, with characters you come to care for immensely.

I desperately need book 3.

Note: there probably should be a trigger warning for assault here.

This novel was SO good! The author has a fantastic way of refreshing the reader what happened previously in book one, but still keeping all the action and angst going with the latest developments in book two.

Truly, if I could have, I would have gone ahead and read this book in one sitting because it was extremely engaging. (I also wish bedtime didn't have to be a thing. LOL!). I didn't find myself wanting to book down once because it was boring or slow. No, instead there were tough topics addressed (even though sometimes uncomfortable because of what happens), fights and drama that left you begging for more, and an overall sense of adventure.

Clark was probably one of my favorite characters in book one and goodness. I was thrilled by his growth in this one! (And Addie's too because I love her too.) He had me grinning so big as he realized things about himself and had compassion for others in certain situations. Not to say he didn't see "red" a time or two and need someone to help calm him down. He is after all, Clark.

When I finished this book, I am proud to say I'm a reader of this author’s stories (and now stalker of every new book release). She can write an incredible story that simply leaves me breathless with creativity and drama. The Tempest Sea only confirms that. (Clark and Addie could still work on those communication skills. Haha!)

If you're looking for a new edgy series that deals with tough situations, but celebrates the joys of (spoiler here), then I strongly recommend this series. It's very good and one I'm planning on rereading in the future. Plus, those covers are absolutely stunning!

*(Many thanks to the author for providing me an ARC. I was not required to write a review or positive one. All thoughts expressed are my own.)*

I don't know where to start other that to say: woah. Not quite perfect, but even so, amazing writing deserves celebrating even if I'm going to stick with 4.5 stars. This series is the complete opposite of all those unchallenging YA/NA reads that skim the surface of a world while characters get smoochy. It is deep. It is very, very twisty-turny-edge-of-the-seat sort of deep. Plots within plots, surprises you didn't see coming, some that maybe, if you're very observant, you did (don't you love when foreshadowing is so subtle it pays off?) and characters with so many dimensions I'm surprised they all fitted into one book.

Our heroes are all at sea in this book, both literally and figuratively as they navigate vast oceans and the complex feelings they have for each other. Yes, there is the development of Clark and Addie's do they/don't they romance (ClAddie? Adelark? How do we ship them?) which is pitch-perfect in examining two damaged, mistrustful characters while making good use of the tropes you know and love. But there's the dynamics of friendship, of brotherhood and family, of what makes people stick together even when it seems everything should fall apart. There's no teenage histrionics or arguments because "reasons". No one is the perfect paladin or the darkest villain, not even those you thought you knew.

While it took me a little while to get up to speed at the beginning, the plot only snowballs from there and by the end I was devouring the pages. The world beyond the Ever Falls is a dark mirror of the one left behind, both familiar and deadly and wonderfully realised. There are so many little intrigues, mythological, magical, mechanical... If you like to follow a good mystery of epic fantasy proportions, then this will be just your thing.

One thing about this series: You need to think, to remember, to put two-and-two together, and that's no bad thing. Between the plot set-pieces and the intimate character scenes, it's a rich and rewarding story. The ending is one that had me chewing my nails; I had come to care for the characters that much. No spoilers here, but those last chapters were quite an emotional ride.

This is pure mystery and magic wrapped up in a complex story that credits the reader with intelligence. I'm holding my breath (and keeping notes!) for the next book.

Wow! Where do I begin?

Have you ever read a book, enjoyed it and expected the same thing for the sequel but got so much more instead?

That happened to me with The Tempest Sea.

We go on a whirlwind adventure with our heroes again, but this time at sea. There is so much action and so many twists and turns and even, wait for it.. Pirates.
In this installment of The World Apart series, we get to see the other half of the world, beyond the EverFalls. And it doesn’t disappoint.

Everyone is after the necklace that Addie is stuck wearing and she’s starting to realize that there is more to this necklace and more to this plot than she realized. Clark goes after her but has his own demons to battle getting there.
It is all so well done and leaves us with yet another gut-wrenching cliffhanger.

Robin D. Mahle is a newer author, but you would never know that with these books. Especially this one.

I literally couldn’t put it down.
The reader truly feels the emotional roller coaster we go on with Addie in The Tempest Sea. The fear she has for her life is so real,
it says a lot about the author if they can make me feel what the protagonist is feeling.

The character development, with not only our two MC’s but also the side characters, was so well done. You see how both Addie and Clark grow because of their experiences and in spite of them.

I love how real all of these characters are. They make real mistakes and suffer real consequences for them. They are flawed but so lovable, each in their own way.

I was truly blown away by this book and am desperately trying not to give spoilers!

I received a copy of this book for the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book tore my heart out and stomped on it until there was nothing left. This book was impossible to put down and I couldn’t help being pulled into this magical world again.

Addie tackled some quite controversial topics, and we see a bit of a darker side to this story. I think it was executed brilliantly, and without being over the top, and overtaking the whole storyline.

I loved the development of the relationships, and seeing the different betrayals and heartbreaks, and how even through all of that, we are able to see a bit of a love story, and something to really warm your heart.

The ending absolutely broke my heart. While technically not a cliffhanger, it left me feeling empty, and needing the last book to stop the pain of the ending!

This would definitely be one of my favourite series I’ve read this year! Bring on book three!

I’m really enjoying this series! Clark is yummy... Actually all 3 brothers are. The character growth of Addie and Clark has been so fun to see. The relationships of these characters are the type where you feel like part of the crew- these are my people! I can’t wait to see what happens in book 3!

The story starts at a slow pace, but still keeps you captivated. The amount of action in this book is smaller than in the previous book, but this is compensated with a lot of emotional stuff that's going on, you learn a lot about the background of different characters. I was glad to see Nel getting a bigger role in this book, it's something I missed in the previous book. I also liked the protector and princess chapters, they give you valuable insights as well. Like in the previous book, Addie is again struggling with some stuff but being though and bad-ass as well. Her character is really great. It's nice to see how she starts to recover throughout the story as well.

Thank you Robin D. Mahle for the ARC in exchange for an honest review, I'm excited to read book number 3.

Part 2 was even more character development and history of the main characters. We learn who Nell really is, where Gunther came from and more about the boys mysterious father. Most of the story takes place on ships in the sea. I read thru this quickly because you want to know what happens next! The ending is definitely a whopper!

I so very nearly fell out with Robin D Mahle over this book... I still might... They're so close to breaking my heart!

The Tempest Sea is the incredible second novel in The World Apart series, whisking us away from Ceithren and across the Tempest Sea to the other side of the world.

The adventure is again told from Clark and Addie’s POV but this time we are also treated to snippets from Xavier and Nell's past.
These tidbits allow the side characters to tell their story right up to the present situation, (almost) dissolving their untrustworthy nature in the readers eyes but not ruining the tension within the plot line.
I also loved how the chapters were labelled rather than named (ie Xavier is The Protector) as this really reflected how these "off screen" moments have shaped the characters and made them grow into something much more than their assumed role.

As well as our favourite characters from The Fractured Empire *side eyes Gunther* we also get to spend a lot more time with Locke, Nell and we are finally properly introduced to the infamous general. Alongside a plethora of side characters ranging from a pirate ship full of badass women to a fair few men we love to hate, Robin D Mahle really spoils us.

This fast paced sequel is jam packed full of action, flying ships, pirates and danger: its a wonder there is any time for romance! Addie and Clark may have been through the ringer but the tension and their magnetism throughout this book will have you screaming at them to open their eyes and just accept the attraction. That would be way too easy though... You know they're just going to wind each other up and fall out a few more times 😊

With the foundations set in The Fractured Empire, Robin D Mahle could really have fun with The Tempest Sea and I think this shows. The action and suspense rolls off the page, dragging us along for the ride. There are some darker moments (big trigger warning for sexual abuse) but these serve to make the characters stronger. They'll certainly need it for the next stage of their journey!

I really Loved The Fractured Empire and scrambled to get my hands on the sequel as fast as possible.

Once again I really enjoyed the writing style and the characters, but this book seemed a bit rougher, and there were definitely a few things that didn't work for me. The pacing seemed inconsistent, and I found myself a bit frustrated with the progress of the plot and with Addie.

I still really like all of the characters, and I'll pick up Book Three to see where the story takes them, but I'm hoping Book Three will be able to capture more of the magic that was Book One.

Wow. This journey keeps getting better. There's not much I can say that won't give plot points away. That happens when I am emotionally invested in a story. I just want to gush about happenings and characters. I won't, though. I will say I look forward to bingeing the rest of the series.

“One monster is much like the others.”

Uh this sequel was soooo good! Normally sequels suffer from trying to fill in too many backstory details so they lag in character development or really moving things forward. Definitely not the case here. This book managed to simultaneously move all the narratives forward and keep the intrigue going while also adding more depth to the characters themselves.

Addie really went on such a journey this time around. My heart just broke for her with what she experienced after being taken by the Court of Yomi. That kind of trauma is so difficult to face and seeing her wrestle with those feelings of shame and questioning if she was a monster was hard to read and yet so necessary. It was encouraging watching her inner strength grow as she started to believe she could trust others again and most importantly herself. My only sadness with it all is how she continually shut Clark out. You can say he was being pushy, but he didn’t have all the facts and he only ever had concern for her and wanted her to fight back against her pain, not let it swallow her, which is a good thing. That’s the only part of her trauma story I would’ve liked to have seen was her really opening up to Clark instead of him finding out a roundabout way and them not having a moment to talk about it.

In a way that’s true to their relationship though. Those two define beating around the bush. Their feelings for each other are so painfully obvious to everyone but somehow they manage to keep skirting the issue. That’s why I just love the route the author took to finally get them together. It was so perfect for the two of them since they have such an inability to trust one another and lay their feelings on the table that it forced them to put it all out there and be a little more honest with themselves and each other. Clark’s tenderness towards Addie and the way he can bring out the vulnerability in her and her the softness in him is swoon-worthy, especially considering that these moments are so hard fought between them.
"Maybe I want it to be your business. Maybe I’ve wanted that since the moment I watched you pick your stubborn way across the shipyard, injured and barefoot."

It was nice that the story kept up with Clark & Addie’s POVs too but changed the in-between chapters to filling in the backstories of Nell and Xav this time. It gave a lot more context to why Xav’s behavior is the way it is at times and why he would’ve seemingly betrayed his brothers and Addie how he did. Same goes for Nell, getting to know how she grew up in Levelia and more of the secrets about her status there and her manipulations gave background to everything that unfolded with her and Addie’s friendship and the necklace that’s binding them all together. Gunther continued to be his adorable, utterly lovable self and his willingness to be the one who’s there for Addie was so sweet. His confrontation with his family was so intense but it only made me admire him more for his ability to hold himself together in the face of such indifference and mistreatment. If Clark & Addie weren’t such great characters Gunther would definitely be my favorite. That being said, I wanted to clap so hard when Clark stood up for him. It only shows the amount of love and care these boys have for each other despite all the secret keeping between them.

Locke surprised me in this book too since we had gotten some glimpses of his father/daughter relationship with Addie in the previous book but this one just reveals how special their bond really is. How protective he is over her and how she relies on him when that doesn’t come easily to her shows what they mean to each other. For some reason I paricualry liked the inclusion of that because it’s rare in books nowadays to show good familial relationships and even though the family relationships of all these characters have been blown apart, to see Addie have a surrogate parent that loves her so much was heartwarming. Plus it very much offset the sadness of the boys relationship with their surrogate father.

I enjoyed that this book kept driving the plot forward while keeping the ultimate goals the same, figure out the meaning behind the necklace and what is the ultimate aim of these people who want it. Adding in new characters like Nell’s aunt SuEllen and her pirate crew of women from Levelia worked well to bring fresh elements to the stories and allow for added elements of surprise and depth to the characters. Getting more insight into the world of Levelia from their customs and background was a good addition. Plus, it added plenty of humor where the boys were concerned. That and Shensi, Addie’s cat, could always be counted on for humorous moment, especially around poor Clark.

Overall a marvelous follow up to the first book. It dealt with real trauma, sacrifice and facing your worst fears. The ending was a shock to me and left me absolutely reeling as to where it’s all going to go from here. I can’t wait to find out more about these characters and this world, it’s been great so far so I have high hopes that it’ll continue to be so going forward.

What the hell does Xavier think he's doing. That's what I asked myself when I realized that Xavier had knocked Addie out and took her to his father. She's thrown into the Brigg and kept there as they sail away. Clark and Gunther go after them stealing the Prince's boat. Nell has come along with Addie's cat and Locke her bodyguard.
We find out that Gunther knows about this land beyond the falls and he's really not to happy being there but it comes in handy when they finally caught up with their father.
This book was a page turner from beginning to end. I can't hardly wait for the next book.

I’ve never been much for pirate stories. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” was good, but that was where my interest ended.

If pirate stories were all like the Tempest Sea, I’d be 1000% on board.

I didn’t think it was possible, but the second installment in the Worlds Apart series by Robin D. Mahle is even better than the first. This is hands-down the best story I’ve read all year. Mahle somehow manages to avoid the second-book curse, where everything feels like a bridge. Instead, this story’s plot twists, turns and thrills as our characters take to the sea.

****** SPOILERS AHEAD *********

The story opens with a prologue from a new perspective: Gunther. This sweet little brother in our characters’ makeshift shows his colors right away with a moral dilemma: leave for dead the man who nearly killed his brother, or do what his soul feels is right and save him. Gunther shows the reader what we already suspected: he’s got a strong backbone and a soft heart, and he’s not someone who can leave a person for dead.

The story quickly progresses on to our main characters, Addie and Clark, who are imprisoned apart by different groups. We learn their world is not black and white — the people we met in The Fractured Empire are not simply good or bad, and there may be much more at stake here than they ever imagined.

Mahle also introduces two new perspectives throughout this story: First, memories from Xavier’s childhood, his adolescence and ultimately his interactions with the General that led him to kidnap Addie and turn her over to the Court of Yomi. We see his drive at all times is to protect his family, and how heavily he carries the impossible choice he had to make in keeping his brothers in the dark and kidnapping Addie.

Then, we get answers to who Nell is, that mysterious friend of Addie’s who keeps meddling and taking more license than is fair to alter Addie’s trajectory.

We witness two very different crews of sailors, the General and his Court of Yomi, and SuEllen and her Levelian pirates. The story is full of swashbuckling fun, and the stakes continue to rise as our makeshift family of characters learn they are in the middle of a fight that spans worlds.

And finally, I am so grateful for Mahle’s instinct to treat romance as though the story is still worth telling beyond the wedding. We see a marriage, the complicated feelings in the fallout, and we know that there’s at least one book already out there where we’ll get to explore what married life is like in a world that is falling apart.

And after a loss like that at the end? I’m not crying, you’re crying. I need the next book STAT.

10/10 would recommend. Read this series now! You won’t regret it.

Part of me died in this book. And if you read it, you know what I mean.

How does someone write a review when their heart is not whole? I shall try and persevere for the rest of you.

"But Emily, you're being so dramatic!"

I DON'T CARE. I KNOW!

Robin D. Mahle threw in flashbacks from the POV of Xavier and Nell and it was a great addition to the book. I stated in my review for book 1 in the series that the motivations of every character are really muddy, and as that continues to be the case for General Noble and The Director, we are starting to understand the supporting characters more. The additional flashbacks give insight into their characters that I didn't notice I was lacking in the world building of book 1.

No spoilers I promise, but the ending of this book was something ELSE! I have no idea what is going to happen in book 3, but of course I am about to pick it up the second I click publish on this review since I can't get enough.

The plot thickens as Addie is kidnapped (again, this is becoming tiring) by General Noble. Clark, his brothers, and Locke have to go after her to rescue. Addie is still stuck with that terrible necklace around her neck. She finds herself unraveling with her trauma she experienced while captive, and I love that my man Gunther is there to help her.

I mean, Clark/the gang is too, but GUNTHER is there.

I'm not sure I am seeing the development in Addie that I hope to see in book 3. She still seems to not process her grief from her mother and sister's death...though is that something you ever can come to terms with? By the end of the book, she is luckily more willing to allow others in, but she feels really distant from me as a main character, and main POV. I hope we get to explore more of her growth.

Clark is still clueless when it comes to Addie. It feels like they're supposed to be together, but he can't figure out the how and in his defense, she doesn't make it easy on him. Book 3 will be her chance to be there for him, and I can't wait.

In book 3, I am looking for answers. The Director and General Noble, what is up with them? Also...Nell, what the heck is up with her? Who is she? Why does everyone lie to one another? And as always, I need more Gunther.

Lead Characters: 3.5/5
Supporting Characters: 5/5
Plot: 4/5

I am absolutely speechless, like really just dumbfounded. I’m writing this after I read the third book, because I literally couldn’t write anything except this, which I put in my notes, “Hell no, this got me messed up. I am going to cry.” So, I was obviously in no state of mind because of the strong emotions it was CLEARLY able to evoke. Trust me though, it was for good reasons. And if nothing I write makes sense, I blame my inability to stop thinking about the book, and actually focus on anything else.

I am on a roller coaster of emotions right now, and I couldn’t be happier for it. Although I am heartbroken and angry at the ending, I am so proud I was able to feel for the characters. In this rather short amount of time, I have witnessed these characters developing into the- not flawless- people they are. I am not disappointed, not one bit, with the plot or characters because they were absolutely fantastic.

The only ‘bad’ thing I have to say is that sometimes the flashbacks made me angry- like something important would be happening in the current, and then BOOM- teleported back for the history lesson. Don’t get me wrong, those history lessons were good, they helped to clarify so much, but I can’t pretend I didn’t read through them as fast as I could to get back to the present. Perhaps that’s because this book, this series rather, is really just so addicting. I am literally transported to another world, and I just want to fully indulge in it.

I have no criticism for the characters or the plot because I fell in love with them a long time ago. The world building is just the right amount so it’s not like shoving information don’t your throat. Reading this is just making me obsessive over this entertaining, and quite fascinating, series! So far, I have no doubt in my mind that this will become something I will reread continuously- perhaps because I lack self control- but mostly because it’s just so amazing that I don’t want to leave it in the dark.

Thank you to the author and publisher for providing me with an ebook advance reader copy for free- in exchange of me leaving a review both honestly and voluntarily.

Y'all there's this one scene that made me squeal so hard, I think I ruptured an organ and now I've got internal bleeding! I'm giving this book an extra sparkling 6th star for that scene. It made me so so happy when I figured out what was happening. If I ever get the chance to get *spoiler*ed again, I want it to happen like that! It's so romantic and adorable!

This book was like a voyage on a turbulent ocean during a terrible storm! First you're at the very top of the waves and then the boat gets slammed into the water and you're convinced you're going to drown!

Clark got serious brownie points for going to the ends of the earth to make sure he gets Addie to safety!

Addie has grown so much and she was forced out of her sheltered life. There was no one there to save her so she had to save herself. That's my favorite part of a female character - when she realizes she doesn't need a man to save her.

What I loved even more was that we got to learn a lot about Xav, Gunther and Nell as well. We got to see why they made some of the choices they did and how they handled the repercussions of those choices. Nell surprised me the most. Her story was one I never could have predicted.

I've only known Robin for 2 books and when I got to the end, she broke my heart! I felt so betrayed but I knew she did what she did for a reason and when I read the Epilogue, my suspicions were correct. I don't understand why yet but I know she will explain in the next book.

The steampunk theme continued with flying ships and the most amazing outfits... knee high boots and corsets and lots of leather. Interesting story... I had to create a logo for a client and when I finished, I noticed I picked a steampunk theme without even realizing it! I'm completely lost in this series and I'm not planning on going back to reality any time soon.

I'm about to start with The Forgetten World, so don't try to bother me, I will sink your ship!

“One of the greatest failings of this part of the world is when women are forced to take blame for a man’s actions.”

Be still my heart! It won’t stop racing after that ending! I’m loving the way this story is going! It still has the same fast paced plot progression as book one and its glorious not to have to wait through unnecessary drama to get answers. The romance between Addie and Clark is absolutely delicious, but I’m anxious to see where it goes from the quick evolution that took place in their relationship. There were a few inconsistencies in the story, like Gunther turning because of the “rustling of leaves,” even though he’s deaf and would never respond to a noise. I enjoyed the “flashbacks” into the “protector” and the “princess,” but I also hated how they detracted from the flow of the overall plot. It’s good info to know, but I would’ve preferred to stay the course of the main plot than interrupt the flow, especially with the “princesses” flashbacks. I loved all the characters and the real life emotions they emitted throughout the story. I felt that there was some unnecessary plot, in that, what purpose did Clark and his brothers really have? After Addie was rescued they had no purpose. And they had no real purpose in even doing that except for Clark’s growing interest that he refused to acknowledge and the fact that they all had nowhere to really go. But it felt like a missing narrative more than just happenstance or whatever you want to call it. I didn’t hate it, because I’m loving them all together, but it felt adrift to not have a purpose for the majority of this story. Onward to book three!

Picking up where book 1 left off, Addie has been kidnapped (again) and is being held by a cult and Clark is behind bars thanks to Addy's father. Can Clark get to Addie and save her? Can Addie learn to save herself? Betrayed and broken can they reunite before worse befalls them and when danger is on them who will they be willing to sacrifice to save the kingdom?

⚡️ Steampunk X Magic

⚡️ Great world building

⚡️ Witty Banter

⚡️ Heart wrenching scenes

⚡️ Slow burn Enemies to lovers romance

Wow, I felt all the emotions reading this book: red hot anger, excitement, joy and heart wrenching devastation. It shows really great writing when you can connect to so many characters in such a deep way. As with book 1 I loved the characters, their backstories and how their personalities are evolving. There is so much banter between them and hijinx that there are some truely laugh out loud moments. I am totally gripped by the mysteries surrounding the cult and the mystical land.

I also loved the mini chapters of the protector and the princess, it added a lot of back story and extra insight into what was happening with Clark and Addie. It was so late at night (early in the morning lol) when i finished this book that it took every inch of my will power to not pick up the next book because I knew if I did I would not stop until the sun rose... that Epilogue... damn... why did it have to be so alluring?!?

I'm so excited to continue the series and find out more about all of them. And I am keeping all my fingers and toes crossed that the epilogue means what I think it means.

The Tempest Sea is the second installment in The World Apart series. It picks up immediately following the events of the prior book, The Fractured Empire. The author does provide a reasonable amount of backstory of the main events of the first book so readers won't be too lost if they start the series with this installment. However, I highly recommend readers do read The Fractured Empire because it's a good story with intriguing world building and it provides good insight into the characters. The intriguing world building from the first book continues in this one and takes us into the seafaring world outside of Central Island and pirates. Story is told in similar fashion to the first book where the chapters are told from alternating points of view between Addie and Clark. However, the bits of backstory provided before each chapter focus on other supporting characters than that first book. Nell's bits of backstory offered throughout this book leads me to think that she seriously deserves her own book. Addie goes through some good character development, which i felt was much needed after the first book. Readers should also be aware that there are aspects of abuse and attempted rape in this story. There is more action in this book than the first which I thought the author handled very well. Enjoyable pace and good storytelling. I would absolutely keep reading books in this series.

I received a copy of this book from the author.

Wow! This series just continues to amaze me!

This book takes us out to sea(which is my favorite setting in any book!), and we get to learn more about Nell, the boys, and Addie. I love seeing how everyone’s relationships are developing. Everyone has suffered some sort of tragedy in their past, which makes this found family so precious and endearing to me. They make each other stronger, not weaker since they understand each other better than others may.

This book did take a bit of a darker turn, especially in Addie’s case. I want to talk about Addie for the moment. This girl is amazing. She has gone through so much her entire life, and yet she still carries on. She suffered from depression from an early age, and was able to fight it off and continue with her life. Now she suffers even more, and yes, she does push people away, she thinks she can handle it on her own, but she does eventually open up and continues with her life. The way she handles her grief or depression may be different from how someone else may handle it. Everyone is different. I just admire how she still carries on and instead of giving up, fights her depression and decides to get stronger for herself. She also seems to be finally opening up and is accepting the family she has found, even if they are not family by blood.

I once again just loved this book, and I’ve already started the next one. I can hardly wait to see what happens, especially since I need my theory confirmed after the ending of the second book 😏

So good!!!! The world that Mahle is creating for us is so complex at this stage. The magic gives me all the Atlantis vibes. With the blue lights and higher tech, the lost/forgotten city. Then we have a vague understanding of what is actually happening all around. Who's the bad guy? Who is really after our crew of misfits? Will Addie ever open up and let her mask fall for a last time? What kind of power do these stones from Levalia actually hold?

While I thought I would hate this it's nice to not read another predictable book. We did have our typical love story that makes me want to scream at times, "One of you just say how you actually feel!?" But it was still good. I loved that Addie didn't just give her trust away and that she understands the importance of love over anger. Once we have the whole backstory to why these parents keep making crappy decisions, everything should make so much more sense.

I really enjoyed the small chapters of the "Protector" and the "Princess". It adds more depth to the storyline and plot. By writing these chapters as more of glimpses into the past and what leads to the present, it was just perfection.

⭐⭐ Good pace for a second book, and the twists and turns the story took makes this an entertaining read.

⭐⭐⭐ I can not get enough of these characters and this world!

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Anyone who likes the Atlantis story lines and a strong personality in a female lead character (everyone) should read this!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Looking forward to a reread.

I ATE this book up, the action, the romance, the stakes, everything was perfect. I made the comparison in my first review, but after this one it's so true, Addie is just like Kestrel from the winners trilogy ( and I loved Kestrel so naturally I love Addie) both of daughters of the most powerful man of their home who have lost their remaining family. They are both "heiresses" who wear pretty dresses and have to done masks so that others can't see their true selves, both are engaged to princes for some time, and now, The first half of this book had me feeling so sorry for Addie and even after it was over I still wanted to just give her a hug. I loved getting to know Xavier and Nel's backstory too. I'm not going to lie, I usually only like 1-2 povs per book but their pov were both short enough that I didn't mind it and intriguing as it talked about both their backstories and beginning, to events that happened in the previous book, to the present. Addie and Clark just make me so giddy and kicking my feet and I love them.

THE ENDING!!! My heart hurts but I'm ready for the next book.

For every question answered, The Tempest Sea brought a stack of new questions along with it, pulling me in once again to Adelaide and Clark's intertwined stories. This book, along with the already established POVs of Clark and Addie, brought in more details about PeNelope and Xavier, bringing understanding, questions, emotions, and more.

The Tempest Sea provided more time with the three brothers (Gunther, Xavier, and Clark), diving into their specific pasts and how The General found them and raised them all. It also increased the tension between Clark and Addie tenfold, in all of the right ways. Most important, for me, was the introduction of the Levelian people, with their preferences towards women over men as the superior gender. It brought such a strength to the women heroines, while providing a look into the land Nell originated from.

Once again, it leaves you with a cliffhanger like no other (and yes, there were tears!), but I cannot wait to see how the story continues.

I’m going to be honest. I don’t completely remember where this book began and the first ended. I went straight from the first into this one.

Addie and Clark’s relationship continues to grow and have its issues. This time there are brief snippets from Nell, starting with her childhood and progressing to present day.

Will Addie ever trust Clark, Xavier, or Nell again? She’s has to deal with so many lies from everyone, and with her imprisonment, the lies seem to be affecting her even more than before.

Levelia is a real place. Will anyone make it there? What will it be like if they do? What happened in Levelia to make it so there is a band of pirates who can’t get back?

As for the necklace Addie is stuck with… what can it do? Why does everyone want it so badly when no one seems to know how the power of the crystal works?
