Private Investigator Dev Haskell is summoned by local crime lord Tubby Gustafson to look into the inner workings of financier Casper Trickle. It seems Gustafson is looking to invest. Dev contacts former friend, with benefits, Heidi Bauer. He's just met Melissa Donnelly online and surprisingly she seems interested in him. There's just on problem, Melissa's ex-husband, Jeremy Lawrence, a stalker with a well-deserved restraining order. Dev has his hands full and crime lord Tubby Gustafson is about to add to the pressure. Fortunately, Dev's Golden Retriever, Morton, is on hand to keep things in line. You'd better check it out. Oh, and get comfortable, because you won't want to put Silencio! down. Enjoy the read!
I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, I still live there as well as in Dublin, Ireland. I've been a soldier, freelance journalist, tended bar, sold designer cakes, owned a painting and decorating company along with a number of other schemes and scams. If that doesn't offend you I also play bagpipes with the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band. All my books stand alone, read them in whatever order you wish. They are filled with the sort of oddballs we are all curious about, but wisely, prefer to keep at a distance. None of my characters will be saving the world from terrorism, international banking conspiracies or coups to take over the government. Rather, they inhabit a world just below the surface of polite society, characters with one foot on either side of the law. The circumstances they find themselves in are usually due to bad decisions, but bad decisions lead to interesting stories. They serve not so much as an example but as a warning to us all. Thanks for taking the time, happy reading.
Fans of this series will automatically know that SILENCIO! is a sure indication that we will be seeing a lot of Tubby Gustafson and Fat Freddy Zimmerman. You haven't been reading the series? Well, my advice to you is that you start way back at the first book in the series, RUSSIAN ROULETTE, and enjoy all the character development along with all the laughs and tears along the way.
Dev has met a woman online. She seems nice, and she seems to like him. But will it last? Always a question in Dev's dating life. Too many women have told him not to call again… EVER! After making my way through all the previous books in the series, I am convinced that Dev isn't unlucky in love, he's unlucky in choice. The new woman in his life has a problem. In this case, an ex-husband stalker
Meanwhile, crime boss Tubby Gustafson has once again roped Dev into his schemes with threats and demeaning harangues.
As usual, the double plot line turns into a single huge problem for Dev. He's always got more than one iron in the fire, and avid readers (like me) know that the irons will melt and gel as the story moves forward. Yet, Faricy manages to keep every book fresh with unexpected twists and turns.
Mike Faricy never disappoints. The fast read Dev Haskell series is a great way to spend a few hours not thinking about the state of the world, the state of the news, or what you need from the grocery store.
Silencio, by Mike Faricy, continues to add to the author's superior reputation as a skilled and entertaining mystery writer. Faricy's Dev Haskell series is always amusing and entertains like a well-constructed movie.
Dev Haskell, Faricy's recurring character, is surrounded by his lawyer /office mate Louie and Dev's reliable dog Morton. Unfortunately, Dev is also plagued by bad guys. Here, Dev is trying to take the high road by offering his services at no charge to a schoolteacher bothered by her ex-husband. Dev is also asked not so nicely by his long-time enemy Tubby Gustafson to investigate a seeming honest business person who may be concocting a crooked financial scheme.
Faricy continues to deliver the goods while cementing his name as one of the mystery genre's most talented and successful writers.
Dev Haskell character is a lay back kind of a guy. This storyline continues to drag and yet I as a reader find myself a follower. Dev character amuses me . Worthy read even after thirty novels.
PI Dev Haskell is summoned by his nemesis, local crime lord Tubby Gustafson, a Jabba the Hut kind of guy with no sense of humor. Gustafson wants dirt on financier Casper Trickle, in case Gustafson wants to invest with him. Haskell’s just met a new love interest, and in typical Haskell style, she comes with a psychotic stalker. Poor Haskell is getting it from all sides, but he’s got some good friends and Morton, his golden retriever, to keep him upright.
This was another fast, fun read from Mike Faricy. Witty dialogue, interesting plot, likeable characters. Haskell started out being this sort of hapless borderline buffoon, but I have enjoyed watching him progress over the years. There’s a nice subplot involving his new girlfriend’s son and Haskell helping him out with some life issues. It was done with a light hand and made me like Haskell even more.
This is book 30 in the series, but the books can be read as stand alones. Faricy does a great job of sprinkling past plot tidbits throughout, so you can keep up. It’s been some time since I’d read a Dev Haskell book and I didn’t feel lost at all.
The Haskell books are always a pleasure to read – they make the time on the treadmill or recumbent bike fly by, and hold my interest all the way through. I’m a little sad when they end because I’ve become attached to Haskell over the years. I will read more in this series. If you like traditional PI novels, or you’re a fan of Carl Hiaasen, Tim Dorsey, Elmore Leonard, or Janet Evanovich, you’re probably going to like Dev Haskell too.
I like Dev. He is a genuinely nice person and gets treated badly by just about everyone except his mate Louie. He’s luckless in love and is constantly used by Heidi but keeps going back for more.
He is also a good PI but a terrible businessman as he never seems to earn any money and despite the local gangster Tubby Gustafson constantly demanding his service, for which he never pays and is always demeaning Dev and making derogatory comments but Dev just sucks it up.
Dev decides to do online dating and meets Melissa who ultimately treats Dev as badly as everyone else despite Dev going the extra mile for her when her ex husband stalks her and Dev takes her young son under his wing teaching him hockey and getting him into a hockey team at his own expense (not sure where the money is coming from). At the same time he’s researching someone for Heidi that also has connections to Tubby. All unpaid!
There are lots of passages in this series that are repeated (copy and paste almost) such as every time Dev wakes up, every time Louie arrives at the office and every time Tubby arrives at the office as well as many other instances but it doesn’t grate on me.
Come on Mike Faricy, let Dev have a bit of luck, kindness and decent earnings. I guess that shows I care about Dev even after reading 30 books in the series and I’ve got the rest of the series in my library.
Dev Haskell has another round of problems. A lovely lady has a vindictive ex-husband who is making her life miserable. His drive-byes are scaring her as he is a complete head case. Meanwhile, Haskell’s pro-bono work for Tubby is ramped up with the usual amount of threatening sarcasm.
Mike has developed a tried and true method of writing Dev Haskell, Private Investigator. The pretty ladies who are generally his clients seem to get an amazing amount of pro-bono work out of him. At times he dodges bullets or bad men but winds up successful in the end. I wonder how he can even walk after some of the beatings he takes in the novel.
Silencio is another of those fun, fast reads. Simply put, it will keep you awake and turning pages. Enjoy! 4.5 stars – CE Williams
We received a gifted copy of this book from the author that in no way influenced this review. These are his honest opinions.
Dev has a new case. Unfortunately it is for Tubby Gustafson, who you know by now, doesn't pay for Dev's services. The job is to find out all he can about investment broker Casper Trickle. Naturally there are shady dealings involved. Dev is also doing so online dating, where he meets Melissa and her 8 yr old son, Liam. Melissa is actually married to a psycho who doesn't know the meaning of a restraining order. More than enough going on to keep Dev busy.
Dev helps a woman stalked by her soon-to-be ex-husband - a man nuttier than a fruit cake. Their 8 year old son is terrified of him too. Will this be a happily-ever-after for Dev, a ready made family? And who is Casper Trickle? Morton is his glowing self. Louie, Tubby and Fatty always provide comic relief. And Dev never fails to delight. Where would we be without Mike Faricy to brighten our lives? Too horrible to contemplate. Very Highly Recommended.
I loved this book. I think Dev Haskell is probably my favourite PI. being Scottish I've never been to St Paul but am such a fan of these books I googled it to see where our hero lives. I always one click a Dev Haskell book and I always feel sorry that his love life never really gets anywhere. Please can we get Dev and Heidi back dating because it's so funny when he attempts to romance her! Loved this book till on book 31! Thank you
Reading this series in order and loving it. I love Dev and his adventures. In this one, Tubby Gustafson has asked Dev to look into someone and provide information on him. Dev also meets a new woman who has an elementary aged son who he teaches ice hockey to and enrolls in one of the local leagues. I do not know how the author keeps coming up with such great stories but am truly enjoying these books. This was another great addition to the series.
5 Stars is not enough!!! This book is fantastic. I did not want to put it down----If you are a reader of the Dev Haskell series, you are aware that NOTHING Dev does is correct in Tubby's mind, well, be ready for a little surprise with Tubby and Dev. Loved the story and the ending was nice, but Dev and what he did with the little boy was so good!!!! This book is worth whatever I paid for it 4 times over!!!! So very glad I got it and read it.....
What a great book. Mike did a great job with this one. Dev as always, tries to help someone out, and does, but in the end gets let down since Melissa decides to move away after she is finally free from her ex. He does make out in the end as Tubby leaves him a nice little gift for him which he could use since he didn't get paid for his services, as usual. Looking forward to the next one.
I found this book entertaining. I finished it in 1 day. Dev and Louie really make me laugh. I enjoy reading any of Mikes books. His mystery writing is not the serious kind. But the believable fun situations you can actually imagine as you read. Thanks Mike.
Tubby want Dev to get information on a person he is investing lots of money with. Dev has a new client, who is being harassed by her ex-husband and has a son that is growing on Dev. Fun reading as always.
You can always count on DevHaskell for a good read, your favorite characters as well as introduce you to some new ones! Plenty of twists, chuckles and a pleasing, often surprising, ending
