When Jen thought she has got her life under control, her small bookshop, Ravenous Readers is doing good, she has two books coming up in line and there are people to help her, good friends for company. But writing perfect murder mystery doesn't come easily to Jen, but she is determined to get it right this time. Just as she sits down to start writing her next novel, she stumbles across a chilling real life case, a man who claims he's been wrongly convicted of murder. Will Jen be able to resolve this cold case with her amateur sleuthing skills.

Set in the small town of Riddleton, "Sentenced To Murder" is a cozy murder mystery that will keep you hooked this monsoon. I've been searching for a good, cozy, small-town crime series to indulge in this monsoon, and I found the perfect one. The book starts with readers getting to know Jen and her surroundings, slowly progressing into a mystery. Even though I'm late into the series, having started with the fifth book, I did not find it difficult to grasp, it seems they can be read separately and as standalones. I really enjoyed the character sketches, there are so many unsuspecting characters with dynamic backgrounds. Even though the plot was pretty predictable, I enjoyed the cozy vibe of it.

Coming to the writing, the writing is simple and easy. The narrative is good both in terms of quality and quantity, ensuring that readers remain engaged without feeling overwhelmed. The author's style is straightforward yet evocative, effectively painting a vivid picture of the charming town of Riddleton and its intriguing inhabitants. Additionally, the pacing is well-balanced. I really enjoyed this book in today's gloomy weather. Recommended to cozy mystery lovers.

"Sentenced to Murder" is the fifth book in the Bookstore Mystery series by Sue Minix. It's a cosy read that is perfect to enjoy with a cup of coffee, and I love reading this subgenre of mystery for its slower, softer tone.

I like Jen, mainly because she's not your perfect amateur detective; she's flawed and human. However, sometimes, it was annoying that she couldn't see the clues that were right in front of her face. Her insights into her working relationship with her partner and the dynamics with her friends give the story a nice personal touch.

The writing style is smooth and easy to read and can be finished by a reader in a day like I did. While I enjoyed the story overall, I wish the ending was a bit more entertaining because it was quite easy to figure out 'whodunnit' a few pages in. I'm still looking forward to catching up on all the other books in the series.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!

I’ll start if by saying the usual cozy mystery ingredients can be found in this book; young, smart female sleuth. Policeman/detective boyfriend. Small town feels with a big city threat. Cute dog and interaction with the dog too. Eccentric cast of characters that everyone just accepts as normal, from a muumuu wearing psychic to a bookstore employee who enjoys dressing up as book/movie characters.

What didn’t work for me may have partly been because this is my first foray into this series and it’s number five. However, I’ve never had any problems falling into most cozies right away. The dead body had already been found, in a previous book.

There are references to things that also happened previously. I also felt like Jen simply does too much and is actually doing nothing at all. Why does she need to “run” a bookstore slash coffee shop? She has neither the time nor apparently the ability to sell her products. By her own admission she doesn’t make coffee and doesn’t expect to learn. Her 50/50 manager is actually doing 100% of the work while Jen usually just blows in to make some phone calls in the office. I felt like this was sloppy writing, like she’s been written into a corner. She’s writing a novel, breezing into the bookstore and investigating but her actual life seems to take a backseat to the investigation, when it should all be happening around that.

There was also the repetition of the diner and that she only eats the bacon cheeseburger. She seems to have one daily! It was always used as a plot device and after a while it grew stale.

All in all I wasn’t very impressed with the mystery elements either, as a whole the three murders referenced here just didn’t wholly make sense.

Now. I did enjoy reading this still, I just don’t feel like it stood up to some of my beloved cozies. I’m going to go back and read book one to see how this got so tangled. There is another book out in October and I’d be interested to see if the bookstore role gets downsized even more. Three stars.

Sentenced to Murder is an enjoyable addition to The Bookstore Mystery series, offering a cozy and charming setting that makes for a fun and easy read. The story follows the classic cozy mystery formula, with an amateur sleuth, a close-knit community, and a bookstore at the heart of it all. The pacing is well done, keeping the reader engaged as the mystery unfolds.

While I enjoyed the plot and the investigative aspects, I have to admit that I figured out the culprit fairly early on, which took away some of the suspense. The twists and turns were still entertaining, but the predictability made the later parts of the book feel a bit slow. However, the cozy atmosphere and the well-developed setting helped make up for it.

One thing that didn’t work for me was the romance subplot. The relationships between the couples felt forced and unnecessary, and their presence didn’t add anything meaningful to the main story. I would have preferred if the book focused entirely on the mystery instead.

That said, I still found this to be a solid cozy mystery with plenty of charm. If you enjoy book-themed mysteries with an inviting setting and a lighthearted tone, Sentenced to Murder is definitely worth reading!

I've really grown to love this series by Sue Minx.
Jen is working on her next book, while learning how to adjust to having Lacey as a partner in the bookshop.
Jen is a great character, she has a fun personality, and freely admits to her faults, its refreshing to have a character that isn't always perfect.
Jen's habit of finding dead bodies has given her a reputation as an amateur sleuth and when she's asked to look into a possible wrongful conviction, things go bad at a rapid pace.

These books always keep me engaged and Sentenced to Murder did just that.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book.

Another enjoyable cozy crime/mystery novel in the Bookstore Mystery series. Mystery writer Jen Dawson finds herself in a dilemma, is she going to try to prove a man in prison is innocent and save his life? This wouldn’t be her first time she got an innocent man out of jail.. But is he really innocent, and will she risk her own safety for it? Along the way she stumbles on other personal problems and new cases to solve.

I really hope there will be a sixth book!

Sentenced to Murder by Sue Minix the 5th instalment in the "A Bookstore Mystery" series. I enjoyed this book and look forward to book 6!

She’s written murder mysteries before, but can she solve this real life cold case?

I really enjoyed visiting Riddleton again and Ravenous Reads Bookstore. The main cast of characters Charlie, Lacey, Eric, and I love Savannah the German shepherd and all her antics. Jen is trying to navigate having a partner in the bookstore and what that entails as well as, write 2 more books in a year along with proving Jaylon is not a killer!

It was entertaining, full of twists and turns and I did guess whodunnit but that did not distract from the story.

I recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends!

I requested and received an advanced readers copy from Harper Collins/Avon and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

An entertaining cozy mystery with fun characters, an unusual plot, and a story that kept the readers interested and invested.

The protagonist is gutsy in a realist way. She has great friends, a good sense of humor, and a knack for solving mysteries. The plot was interesting for a cozy mystery, as it wasn’t just finding a dead body. The author kept the story moving with good writing, humor, and a touch of romance.

My review is voluntary and all comments and opinions are my own.

Life in Riddleton has quietened down a little, and author, bookshop owner, and amateur detective, Jen Dawson, is trying to get to grips with her latest crime novel. It's not flowing as well as she'd hoped so when her friend, Marcus, asks if she can help a friend of his who's been wrongly imprisoned for murder she's eager to help!

The tale Jaylon Barnes relates about his conviction and the life-saving medical treatment he needs, which is unavailable while he’s incarcerated, leaves Jen feeling compelled to help. As she begins reinvestigating Jaylon’s case while trying to write a few more chapters of her book, another body is discovered, and the  danger begins to move ever closer.

Book five in this much loved series provides the reader with another visit to Jen's slightly chaotic life as she tries to solve a murder and write her next, hopefully, best-selling novel. There is always an original take on this popular genre in Sue Minix's books, and once again, she surprised me. There are unresolved storylines here, which I am looking forward to revisiting in book six.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Avon Books UK, but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a great series which comes highly recommended.

This is a fun, entertaining read. Jen is an interesting, intriguing, complex, relatable, entertaining, fun characters. I loved the small-town vibes and quirky characters. The mystery was interesting and held me captive until the very end. All of the characters – including the animal ones – added to the fabric of the story and my enjoyment. I liked that the amateur sleuth worked with law enforcement to solve the crime and didn’t make them look like bumbling idiots.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

3 stars. Not the strongest book in the series, Jen's obnoxious know-it-all attitude is starting to grate on me. The author also feels the need to remind us constantly what happened in the previous books and how Jen was able to solve the murders. Which is honestly debatable at this point, the most she does is stick her head where it doesn't belong until it puts her in danger. Aside from that, the book was pretty fun, though I do wish the pacing was a little better. The other books had more tension, this one felt super low-stakes and is pretty much going in circles until the final 10% or so.

I strongly dislike Jen, even though her behavior in this one was slightly better. The story itself just wasn’t that great this time either. That ending was way too rushed for no reason at all and I would’ve liked it better if we saw more of Jaylon.

Book Review: Sentenced to Murder by Sue Minix

Rating: 4 Stars

I recently had the pleasure of reviewing Sentenced to Murder by Sue Minix, and it was quite the page-turner! This cozy mystery, the latest in the The Bookstore Mystery series, had me hooked from the very first chapter.

The story follows Jen, a writer who is just about to dive into her next murder mystery novel when she stumbles upon a real-life case that sends chills down her spine. A man named Jaylon is claiming he's been wrongfully convicted of murder, and as fate would have it, he’s running out of time. Jaylon needs a kidney transplant to survive, but being behind bars for a crime he insists he didn't commit complicates matters significantly. Jen’s curiosity kicks in, and she finds herself drawn into a race against time as she tries to untangle the truth behind Jaylon's conviction. The stakes couldn't be higher—can Jen use her amateur sleuthing skills to save Jaylon before his situation becomes a death sentence?

What I love about this book is how well it balances the elements of suspense and character development. The pacing is just right; it never felt rushed or dragged out. Minix has a knack for crafting a well-plotted mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. I found myself genuinely invested in the characters, most of whom are quite likable. Jen's determination and resourcefulness shine through as she navigates the complexities of the case, making it easy to root for her.

Overall, Sentenced to Murder is a delightful read that I would recommend to anyone looking for a perfect cozy mystery—especially on a rainy day when you just want to curl up with a good book. It's engaging, well-written, and leaves you wanting more from this series. If you enjoy a well-constructed plot with a touch of intrigue and relatable characters, this book might just be what you're looking for!

I’m giving it four stars out of five—definitely worth your time!

Culinary Cozy Mystery that features a mystery author and South Carolina bookstore owner who turns sleuth to clear a man who claims he’s been wrongly convicted for murder.

5/5 stars: Minix's a favorite author and this newest book doesn't disappoint. This is the fifth entry in Minix's Bookstore Mystery series, which is a Literary Cozy Mystery that takes place is South Carolina and features a mystery author and bookstore owner. With plenty of twists and turns, Minix has masterfully crafted a mystery that deftly balances the suspects, clues and red herrings and will leave you pondering the whodunit until the final reveal. Additionally, Minix's writing and character work is stellar; the characters are well-rounded and complex while remaining incredibly likable. It's a joy catching up with Jen, the staff of Ravenous Readers (especially Charlie, who's eccentric wardrobe is always a surprise) and the townsfolk of Riddleton. And it's great to see Jen's relationship with her detective boyfriend, Eric continue to grow. Oh, and one must never forget Savannah, Jen's adorable German Shepherd. Additionally, I appreciate seeing Jen's struggles with writer's block and her process in writing her mystery series... the Davenport Twins are the best. It's all so very meta and fun. While you could read this as a stand-alone, you'll gain so much more by reading the series from the beginning; so be sure to pick up book one, Murder at the Bookstore.

I received this eARC thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK, Avon in exchange for an honest review. Publishing dates are subject to change.

Jen is trying to write the next book in her mystery series, always mindful of her deadline. At the same time, she has responsibilities as co-owner of a bookshop, to her dog, Savannah, and to her boyfriend, Eric, a member of the local police department. Then there is the obnoxious developer who is aggressively trying to buy up local businesses so he can turn the town into an extension of the resort he's building. The last thing Jen needs is another project, but when a friend asks her to help one of his friends who is in prison for murdering his brother but protests his innocence, how can she refuse? She takes on the cold case.

I really enjoyed this cozy mystery. The characters are well drawn with fun quirks and the small town setting is delightful. Savannah is wonderful. Although dealing with a serious topic at the heart of the mystery, the book is funny, too, and made me laugh out loud in places. Jen's insecurities and the ways in which she deals with them, as well as her growing self-awareness, add depth to her character and the story. The friendship between her and her best friend from childhood is heartwarming. The cold case at the heart of this book provides a unique cozy mystery plot which I quite liked. Although there was a bit of repetition with some things--Jen seemed to be constantly stirring cream and sugar into her coffee and giving Savannah chew sticks, for example--the story moved along at just the right pace and kept me eagerly turning the pages. I'm looking forward to seeing what Jen and the crew get up to in the next book. This is a very good read, so settle in with your beverage of choice and enjoy!

The setting and the FMC of this book is what I love to read about, a small town, a writer who loves coffee who owns a bookshop and tries to solve real life mysteries. Jen and her dog's routines provided me a sense of comfort which I always look for in cozy mysteries and also her lunches/dinners with Eric. He is such a sweetheart and I want to be like Eric.
Coming to the mystery, Jen is looking into a case where a guy is sentenced to lifetime in jail for killing his own brother and he is going to die soon if he doesn't get a kidney transplant. Jen thinks he didn't commit the crime and is trying to solve the mystery.
I think she is a good detective/sleuth, she gets a lot of help from her detective boyfriend and her employee Charlie, she does the major work though. But what didnt sit right with me was she could figure out many things that didn't make sense or far fetched because she says 'there's nothing as coincidence when it comes to murder' but couldn't see what was right in front of her, I know she is amateur but still you can see who's lying blatantly and not calling for help when its really needed seemed foolish to me since did I mention this? Her boyfriend is a detective??? she could just drop a message to him before entering a possible danger place where there would be no network. So these things didn't make any sense to me, but in general the mystery was good even though I figured out most of it before Jen.
I would still read the next books in the series because I loved the town and the people and to see if Jen learns from her experiences and does a better job next time.

Assalamu Alaikum 😊, “We reveal more of ourselves in the lies we tell than we do when we try to tell the truth.” - Dorothy Salisbury Davis

🔪 This is the 5th book of the Bookstore Mystery Series. Bookstore related mysteries have a seperate hype among the readers. Jen Dawson, is a murder mystery writer, who learns the case from her friend Marcus where Jaylon had been accused. She assumes it to be a falsely accused case. Being a novelist alone, will she able to solve a real case!?

🔪 The best part I admire about the book is how the author had framed Jen's character. Say if a common person or a next door girl tries to solve a murder mystery, she would surely miss crucial evidences, have wrong leads and trust unknown sources, all of these can be felt in the journey of Jen's investigation. The fact is that author tried to bring out that what we write and read is entirely different when we experiment it in real life. While her investigations begins there comes another death which I find quote common in mystery books.

🔪 This is the only book from the series I have read so far. It can be read stand alone but I personally feel I will be able to connect well and havemore clarity if I read the previous books as well. Slow to medium paced book with detailed descriptive plot. There were fun moments with Jen's asssistant and some dangers lurking around, thus developing enthusiasm to the readers. The ending is quite normal but the book created expectations more. Over all a good read.

I just finished "Sentenced to Murder," the latest book in Sue Minix's Bookstore Mystery series, and it was a pretty fun read. This is the fifth book about Jen Dawson, a bookshop owner who likes to play detective on the side.

In this one, Jen gets mixed up in a real murder case when her friend Marcus introduces her to Jaylon Barnes. Jaylon says he's in prison for a crime he didn't do, and Jen decides to help him out. There's a bit of a ticking clock because Jaylon needs a kidney transplant, so Jen's racing against time to prove he's innocent.

I like how Minix writes Jen. She's not some super-sleuth who gets everything right. She messes up sometimes and misses obvious clues, which made her feel more real to me. There were parts that made me laugh, and other times I was on the edge of my seat. I especially enjoyed the scenes with Jen and her bookshop assistant - they have a fun dynamic.

The story moves along at a good clip, though I'll admit I kind of saw where it was going pretty early on. But that's okay - these kinds of cozy mysteries are more about the journey than the destination, right? It's the kind of book you curl up with when you want something light and enjoyable.

I've read the other books in the series, so I knew all the characters already. If you're new to the series, you might want to start from the beginning, but you could probably jump in here if you wanted to.

All in all, if you're into gentle mysteries with a dash of personal drama, you'll probably enjoy "Sentenced to Murder." It's not going to change your life, but it's a nice way to spend a few hours.

Sentenced To Murder by Sue Minix is just what you need to get out of a slump!

Read on to know why!

Part of the Bookstore Mystery series. This time around Jen Dawson is on a mission to get the falsely convicted Jaylon Barnes out of jail. Convicted for killing his brother purely on circumstantial evidence and not thorough investigation. Now, Jaylon is sick and needs an immediate kidney transplant and the only donor on the list wouldn't co-operate if he is a convicted murderer.

The clock is ticking and Jen needs to be quick to find the real killer and get the innocent out of jail. Set in a cozy small town, this murder mystery is slow and comforting, occasionally hilarious but not haunting and seriously suspenseful. Jen, Eric and a couple of others work to solve the case but not without a series of obstacles that don't seem to end. What I loved the most about the plot is the sense of community and friendship that's part of a small town setting.

The story moves at a slow pace and one needs to become patient to get to the truth. I loved the detailed narrative but occasionally felt the story lagged a little.

In totality, I had a good time and would certainly recommend the book! Can't wait to read the other books from this series!!

Jen is an author, bookstore co-owner, dog mamma, girlfriend to Eric, and amateur detective. In book five of the Bookstore Mystery series, Jen is very much feeling the pressure of being pulled in multiple directions, often racing against the clock. As an author she has a deadline looming that she isn’t sure she can meet. As an amateur detective, she has set out to prove the innocence of an incarcerated man who desperately needs his conviction overturned to receive a kidney transplant to save his life.

Will she solve the case in time? Will local law enforcement take her seriously? Will she be able to manage the bookstore cordially and effectively with her new partner? Will she manage to meet her deadlines to save her writing career? Yes, she will, with grit and a bit of adventure along the way.

I recommend this book to cozy mystery fans who enjoy realistic characters who struggle like many of us do from time to time to balance a chaotic life. The pacing of the book is spot on. The story is well plotted, and the characters are well-developed. It has equal parts cozy elements and mystery.

Princess Fuzzypants here: While Jen is still trying to finish her next novel and is battling writers block, this is a series that continues to grow on me. In the first outing, Jen was cruising close to the Darwin line but as the character has developed she seems much less flighty and more cognizant of the dangers she encourages. She still can get into some hair-raising situations but she does not court them openly as she did.

This time she has been enticed to look into the conviction of a young man who will be denied a life saving kidney transplant if she cannot prove he did not murder his brother. The police do not thwart her efforts since it is a closed case. In fact, wherever possible, they offer assistance. Even the cop whose case it was is persuaded that all may not have been as it seemed. When the truth emerges, the facts are even more tragic than initially thought. Jen uncovers connections to other crimes including one that is almost incomprehensible. Even though I had suspicions early on about the real villain, I don’t want to give too much away.

Four purrs and two paws up.
