Prospect Cottage: Derek Jarman's House

Over a near-decade from 1986, the artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman and his partner Keith Collins created a home and sanctuary at Prospect Cottage. After Jarman’s death in 1994, Collins hung net curtains to shield the home they had shared from the eyes of visitors to Prospect’s world-famous garden.

In 2018, the photographer Gilbert McCarragher, a friend and neighbour in Dungeness, was asked to record the house, a vital artwork in its own right. It was the first time this private world had been so extensively chronicled. Unfolding room by room, McCarragher’s 160+ photographs are accompanied by reflective essays that take the reader inside Prospect Cottage, revealing something of its history and his experience of photographing there.

Tijdens onze vakantie in Kent en East-Sussex kon ik het niet laten om Derek Jarman's 'Prospect Cottage' in Dungeness te gaan opzoeken. We moesten het helaas houden bij een wandeling door de grindtuin, waar Jarman in zijn pakkende Modern Nature uitgebreid over schreef, want té last-minute om de beperkte en gegeerde tickets te reserveren om de binnenkant van het zwart geteerde vissershuisje met de gele raampjes te bezoeken. De locatie op zich was echter al de trip waard en ja, het deed me wat om te kunnen rondlopen op een plek waar ik dagenlang lezend verbleven had, het afgelopen voorjaar.

Bij 'Waterstones' in Lewes - onderweg tijdens een andere ontroerende literaire pelgrimstocht naar Virginia Woolfs 'Monk's House' - vond ik dit fotoboek, dat zich focust op de kamers van 'Prospect Cottage'. Fotograaf Gilbert McCarragher is zelf één van de uitverkoren bewoners van die onwezenlijke mooie omgeving aan het keienstrand van Dungeness met de kerncentrale als achtergronddecor. Bevriend geraakt met Keith, Jarmans levensgezel in zijn laatste jaren en door hem steevast H.B. genoemd, naar zijn troetelnaam Hinney Beast, krijgt hij de kans om elk hoekje van elke kamer te fotograferen.

Keith werd bij het begin van de fotosessies zélf opgenomen in het hospitaal en zou niet meer naar het huis terugkeren. Hij heeft het echter al die jaren, op het dwangneurotische af, onderhouden en intact gelaten, wat 'Prospect Cottage' tot een stofvrij en levend stukje erfgoed maakt. McCarragher schrijft heel persoonlijk over zijn band met Keith en de buren, over hoe hij tewerk is gegaan en hoe zijn over twee jaar uitgesponnen fotosessie evolueerde van gedetailleerd archiveringsplan tot een vrij, intiem en verwonderd in beeld brengen.

Elk voorwerp heeft zijn plek, zijn geschiedenis en zijn betekenis. De vijf kamers zijn met zorg en oog voor detail en compositie ingericht en achtergelaten. Zelfs de opslagplaats in de loft onder de nok van het dak krijgt dankzij de lens van McCarragher zijn eigen sfeer en functie toegewezen. Tenslotte gaat hij ook de tuin fotograferen. Daar vond ik vooral zijn nachtelijke foto's met gebruik van het licht dat vanuit de kamers door de ramen naar buiten valt het mooist. Het hele boek nodigt uit om 'Prospect Cottage' nu écht binnenskamers met eigen ogen te gaan bekijken. En intussen wacht hier nog Derek Jarman's Garden op de boekenplank om verder na te genieten.

My exposure to Jarman’s work is incredibly narrow and limited to a few promo videos he did for the likes of The Smiths, and the delightful, “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out”. These images reveal some interesting characteristics, curious touches and playful quirks which all add up to a fairly memorable house, but to me it would be a house I would like to visit rather than reside in. There are some nice shots, but overall I think they portray a grim, chilly and barren outpost which would send serotonin levels plummeting, but then maybe that’s the point for those of a certain persuasion?...
