Two childhood best friends reunite in L.A. the summer before senior year—but when one of them ends up starring on a teen reality dating show, their feelings for each other get complicated. Perfect for fans of friends-to-lovers rom-coms and The Bachelor!
Sloane McKinney feels like a background character in her own life. But this summer will be different, because she’s spending it with her childhood best friend, Liam Daniels, in her dream city, Los Angeles. Sure, she’s surprised to find that Liam just happens to have had a Hot Guy glow-up since she last saw him, but so what? A little attraction won’t ruin her plans for their fun—and completely platonic—reunion.
What might, however, is that Liam has been roped into working for his producer dad’s new teen reality dating show, Aspen Woods’s Future Leading Lady. It turns out the show is one contestant short . . . and Sloane is the perfect last-minute addition.
But it’s behind the scenes where the drama really picks up. Because wanting to kiss your best friend? That’s a plot twist neither Sloane nor Liam ever saw coming.

A cute swoon YA version of Bachelorette meets Cyrano De Bergerac romance with sweetest friends to lovers trope!
Sloane McKinney is so excited to land in LaLa Land to spend her summer with her best childhood friend Liam Daniels’ family mansion he lives with his TV producer father.
She already formed a list of places to explore with Liam, planning to binge watch her favorite series with him at night times and reconnecting after two years long FaceTiming long distance friendship!
She realizes her friend turned into a very hot man, still sharpening craftsmanship skills at the basement of his house that turned into a small atelier. But one thing she didn’t know Liam is already booked by his father as PA for his latest highly anticipated reality show : “Aspen Wood’s Future Leading Lady” which is popular TV series’ Cove’s spinoff. As you see its acronym AWFLL , it’s a little awful concept similar to the bachelorette ; Aspen Woods who is the leading actor of Cove series is gonna chose his future leading lady: 25 attendants will be compete at beachfront mansion. You may sense there will be cat fight, scandals, lots of dramas, betrayal, jealousy!
Poor Sloane finds herself as one of the 25 girls when the production company is short of one girl and Liam’s father has great negotiation skills, promising her he’ll use connections for Sloane to pursue her future screenwriter career in the industry!
But Liam is not happy with Sloane’s decision to be part of his father’s scheme because he might have unresolved feelings about her and now he finds himself Cyrano Bergerac-ing to Aspen who wants to win Sloane’s heart!
He has to come clean with his feelings before it’s too late and Sloane also feels like something is fishy about Aspen’s motives! She has to find a way to team up with the girls and let them know she has no interest in Aspen.
Overall: I love the fair and well done ending! Such a sweet-swoon YA romance read I highly enjoyed!

Kaitlyn Hill does it again in the most dramatic rom-com ever!!
Real talk, NHTSF is a super fun nod to any reality dating show full of laughs, twists, multiple ships, and emotional moments that leave your little heart smiling and warm, cuddling by the bright fire that is Kaitlyn Hill writing.
And what’s better? She captures all of the love, feels, sexual tension, and lust without the problematic gender roles, Christian-centric sentiments, etc. etc. typical to shows in the Bach Nation. How refreshing to read a book that promotes healthy and honest love, friendship, and self-fulfillment while being super fun, light, and joyful, and did I mention fun?! With majority of the book taking place on the set of a reality dating show, you’re immersed in a world of mansions, production assistants, cameras, and lights, and Hill does such a good job painting the full picture of what one of these sets would be like—even when you’re not reading, you’re left wondering, “what would I be like on a show like this?” I tried highlighting my favorite snippets / things that made me laugh to share here and quickly realized I was highlighting the whole book so you’ll just have to take my word and read it all.
Sloan is a super lovable and cool MC who feels like a friend from page one, our LIs are both hot AF and intriguing in their own rights, and the book is expertly crafted—Hill doesn’t miss a beat. I’ve come to expect flawless execution from the rom-com queen Kaitlyn Hill, and she delivers above and beyond.
If you’re looking for something that will bring you joy, smiles, and an abundance of the kind of love we all need a little but more of, look no further!! I’m a lifelong fan and grateful to find friends in all of Kaitlyn Hill’s books. More please!!!
╰┈➤ this book was pretty cute!! i read kaitlyn hill’s first book, love from scratch, a couple days ago and really wasn’t a fan of it. but not here to stay friends was MUCH better! this book had more of a plot than her other book and while it wasn’t the most interesting plot i’ve read, it kept me entertained enough. the romance between liam and sloane was pretty cute! it was sweet how much liam noticed the little things sloane did and how he could read her expressions so easily. it wasn’t a heart-shattering romance, but nothing really bad stuck out to me either! i also thought bree and alicia were really good side characters!! oh my god, aspen and ty though?? i can’t stand them. when they teamed up and did that thing to sloane, it genuinely made me want to punch them. ugh. anyways, this book was enjoyable, but something felt missing to me, idk…
”i’m her happiest memory. which i can appreciate, since she’s at the center of all mine.”
Oh my goodness, this book. It was absolutely ADORABLE and so funny! I found myself laughing out loud soooo many times.
Liam & Sloane's friendship is magic. The chemistry between the two of them had me smiling so much! The storyline is so, so good. Set around a reality television dating competition. One teen heartthrob and twenty five leading ladies. And yes, all the drama and fireworks we have come to expect from reality tv.
Friends to Lovers. One of the BEST tropes! Not Here To Stay Friends did not disappoint. If you love a feel good romcom, check this out.
My thanks to Penguin Random House Canada for this gifted review copy.
2.5 stars I wanted to like this book more than I did because I like books about reality TV shows.. but I couldn't root for anyone here So the story is about Sadie and Liam, they are childhood friends and never grew distant even though they haven't met in two years.. this summer Sadie is coming to California and she is ready to spend the summer with Liam, but with a twist of fate she ends up participating in a TV reality show where she can win the heart of the teen heartthrob Aspen, but as the show goes on, Sadie realizes that her feelings to Liam are more than friendship I like friends to lovers story, and this is a new realization to me, but what I don't like is friends who kiss and suddenly BAM they are in love .. it felt really sudden to me how one moment they were cool with each other and after they kiss they are in love ? it's a good enough book and I finished it in one sitting but I expected better
This was such a swoon worthy and sweet romance. I love a good friends to lovers story and I loved Liam and Sloane. They are so cute! If you love the Bachelor Franchise, you are going to love this one. I can’t wait to read more from this author. I enjoyed it a lot! The writing was also hilarious. Highly recommend.
Thank you NetGalley and Delacorte Press for this kind ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I think it would be SO awesome to actually have a reality show turn out like this one did! There were parts that seemed unrealistic but I liked how the romance progressed and, ultimately, the ending was pretty adorable.
🌀Synopsis Sloane and Liam have been best friends since they were little. Now that Liam lives in California they haven’t seen each other for awhile and it’s finally time for them to spend a whole summer together. Immediately upon seeing each other they both start to recognize there might be more than friendship there. When Sloane gets roped into a TV drama where the guests try to win over the host romantically, it puts their feelings to the test. Liam spills his heart but for Sloane the show must go on. When Sloane makes the top 4, the girls really get to talking and secrets are revealed. They plan a very special ending for their host, where no one is his prize. The best part? It allows Sloane to finally tell Liam how she feels.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!
5⭐️
i received this arc at the exact time when i was really craving a good friends to lovers ya romance and let me just tell you, this book !!delivered!!
not here to stay friends follows two childhood besties reuniting to spend the summer in L.A. after five years apart—but when they both get involved with a teen reality dating show, their lives take an unexpected turn for the unreal.
reading this book was a great experience. the plot was fun and exciting and the main characters were actually likeable and sooo cute together. i definitely recommend it to everyone.
AAAAAA ADORABLE OH MY GOD, once again, netgalley arc, been down so I'm catching up. And hear me out i hate friends to lovers i just physically cannot handle them but this? Is SO GOOD. like? Liam baby loml AAA daddy issues and like? He's perfect Loved poor baby slo too, who was basically in love with him from the get-go and AAAA they fueled my idiots to lovers meter. My heart is full. I love them. They deserve the entire world i don't really have any other comments except READ IT
So that was a nice example of why The Bachelor trope doesn't work with teenagers.
I'm between 2 and 3 stars for this. 2 because it was cheesy and flimsy with no real stakes, 3 because it at least held my attention and was a fast read. I do think the acronym was great (Aspen Woods Finds a Leading Lady = AWFLL), but I think that was really the only thing I found endearing.
So let's go into why this trope doesn't work for teenagers. Listen, I'm a Bachelor fanatic and I love YA so as soon as I saw this book, I had to read it. The thing is - The Bachelor is a guilty pleasure for a reason - we all want to see the main character fall in love with multiple people, have a hard time choosing, kiss (and sometimes sleep with) everyone, and end up with their true love. Does it work out? Most of the time, no. But still. We watch for the drama and the hope.
When you take that trope and insert teens, you're cutting out a chunk of the high stakes drama. No one actually wants to see a teenage bachelor sleep around with a bunch of girls so it's downgraded to kissing. No one expects a teenager to find their one true love so it's downgraded to a relationship and a role on a TV show. Because the stakes aren't there, the drama isn't there, and this set up just doesn't work.
I did like the idea of the friends to lovers romance, but it was all pretty instant from the moment Sloane stepped off the plane and saw Liam. Therefore, it again took out the possibility of drama because there was no chance she was even going to like Aspen, so I spent the whole book just waiting for all the fake dating to be over.
Wow this is a long review for a book I didn't like. As you can tell, I take my Bachelor trope seriously. I think I'm going with 2 stars instead of 3 since I'm leaning more on the dislike side, but it was fine for a one time reading.
This book was ADROABLE! It was jam packed with teen drama, on an actual teen reality dating show - and I couldn't get enough. It was such a fun read and the author did an amazing job at capturing all the angsts, complicated feelings towards your childhood best friend, and you felt you were along side all the characters. I was hooked from start to finish and I literally devoured it in one day, the writing was so well done and very enjoyable; had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion. Sloan and Liam had undeniable chemistry and they were just adorable. The fact that this was dual POV made it that much more perfect in my opinion because it gave the story a lot of depth and you were rooting for Sloan and Liam from the start.
Friends to lovers is probably one of my top favorite tropes and I never get over the slow realization when the characters start to see that their friendship is changing and the flirting with the idea of evolving into something more. This hit all the right spots with this trope BUT with an added flare of reality TV dating show. Without giving any spoilers the plot twist was EVERYTHING, and the way this ended in the last chapter was perfect.
This was my first book by this author but I already plan on reading her first book. Definitely recommend, it was fresh, unique and a ton of fun to read. The premise of the story will draw you in and before you know it you'll be reading the last line - because that what happened to me LOL.
Thank you to Random House Children's / Delacorte Press and NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
sometimes you just need a good palette cleanser YA romance😌 this was pretty juvenile, but i still had a great time. i was invested in the story, the main characters were lovable, and i love a good bachelor spin-off. i’m usually not a fan of friends to lovers because it literally never seems believable to me and i cannot relate to having a boy best friend like at all.. but this was done well and the tension between them was GREAT. the kiss on the hood of the car was simply iconic! read this is you’re looking for a cute, easy, fun (& a little youthful) book !! 🔥NO SPICE or innuendo🔥 🤐LANGUAGE🤐a few minor swear words throughout. two uses of the F word.
ummmmmm i really loved the concept behind this and thought it was cool asf but the execution was meh. i feel conflicted because i liked the beginning but the end was kinda underwhelming. the author built this revenge on aspen and then it was kinda…not much idk how to explain. still, i had a great time and i liked liam and sloane as a couple and liam as a character himself but sloane 50/50 because sometimes i was like go girl!!! and others i just wanted her to shut up with all her inner monologue and rambling. yeah this book made me realise that ya is not for me anymore, so the rating is also for its genre and the fact i can’t keep reading about teens even if i am one myself. apart from them the side characters were pretty cool too, especially kristi (i❤️kristi) and riley my gf, except obv ty and aspen. I HATED THAT ICK WAS USED WTF
This was a fun friends to lovers summer romance set around a reality dating competition where childhood best friends Sloane and Liam are reunited for the summer only to have Sloane coopted to participate in Liam's dad's new dating show. Sloane has to figure out her growing feelings for Liam while being wooed by the show lead, Aspen Woods - a famous television actor.
Full of heart and a lot of complicated feelings, I really enjoyed this YA romance. Great on audio too narrated by one of my favs, Brittney Pressley and new to me narrator Steven Molony. Many thanks to @prhaudio for a complimentary ALC and NetGalley for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review. Recommended for fans of Never ever getting back together by Sophie Gonzales.
This was just adorable! I couldn’t put the kindle down and even tho I usually don‘t enjoy YA that much anymore, I was sucked into it.
Sloane, is great! She‘s such a strong character with little flaws and insecurities but I love that. Her palm tree obsession is highly relatable (coming from someone who only sees them on vacation too). I thought she was funny and lovable and I couldn’t get enough of her.
Liam is the best. He‘s such an amazing friend and always trying to do the best he can. I loved watching them together! Every interaction was packed with emotions in every sort of way.
I feel like in this book every character is great in their own way and the whole setting of a teen dating show intertwined with a tv show was just brilliant. I‘m usually not a fan of dating shows but this one I would definitely watch!
Thanks to NetGalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review!
Sloane McKinney spends the entire summer with her childhood best friend, whom she hasn't seen in person in years. She and Liam Daniels will finally be able to complete the tasks on the list they made together. Unfortunately, Sloane is unaware that Liam will be working all summer long until Liam's father informs her of the fact before Liam can.
They both have a serious obsession with this television program called, The Cove. And they are making a reality television show for one of the main characters on that show. Aspen Wood's Future Leading Lady is eagerly awaited television they can't wait to watch. Since Mr. Daniels is a TV producer for the show, Sloane is still unaware that Liam's father secured him a position as a PA for the reality show.
When they obtain 24 of the 25 girls needed for the show, Sloane is drawn into the situation when Mr. Daniels offers her a deal that if she agrees to participate in the show, he will help her with her screenwriting. However, Liam is angry with his father for doing this, and he won't tell Sloane to back out of the show despite Liam being upset with him.
Over time, Sloane and Liam become aware of any feelings they might have for one another, but they are unsure how to proceed or approach the subject. She is uncertain of her sentiments, especially with Sloane on the show. So, what will happen?
This book is like Bachelor but for teenagers, and yes, it is cheesy. Overall it's a good book!
Don’t want to spoil anything but what he makes her in the ending 😭🫶🏻 what a fucking man bro

Sloane and Liam haven’t seen each other in person for a while, so Sloane is really looking forward to spending her entire summer with Liam, exploring LA. But when she arrives, she discovers that Liam will actually be working on a bacheloresque reality TV show with his dad for 17 year old Aspen Woods, star of The Cove. When one of the girls is a no show, Sloane ends up taking her place as the 25th girl, all while Sloane and Liam start to develop feelings for one another. Aspen has his sights set on Sloane though. Who will win her over?

This was such a cute read! I loved the reality TV aspect, especially since I didn’t know quite how much of it truly is scripted and fake. The romantic chemistry between Sloane and Liam was flying off the pages, and I really just wanted them to get together! The ending was probably my favorite, with Aspen and the final four girls. I found myself laughing out loud at so many of the comments and sarcastic replies from both Liam and Sloane. I can’t wait to read more from Kaitlyn in the future!
This was so entertaining & funny (Kaitlyn Hill’s voice!!) but my absolute favorite part was Liam & Sloane’s friendship-relationship—it was so supportive & genuine from the jump that I loved them from the first chapter. True friends-to-lovers YA perfection inside twisty turny reality dating show hijinks (where the female contestants bond more with each other than with the leading guy, as it should be).
I loved this book for what it is, a fun, light rom com for teens. It was laugh out loud funny and has some of my absolute favorite tropes, such as reality tv/dating setup and friends to lovers. AND it had dual POVs. I think that the friends to lovers was handled really well for the most part, although I did have some complaints every once in a while about the amount of time spent agonizing over everything, for the most part it was super easy to read.
I flew through this one in just a few hours once I had the time to devote to it. I think that my favorite thing about it is that it truly feels like it is written for teens. I would have loved to have this book to devour when I was in high school.
Overall, it was funny, I loved the characters, and I just had a great time. Highly recommend!
