Love these guide books. Not very practical from a "how to get around" standpoint, but there's always at least one monument or historical place I would have missed had I not seen a picture in the guidebook and exclaimed "I WANT TO SEE THAT!!!!". Sometimes, discriptions just don't do a place justice.
I actually read the 2016 version, not the 1995 version, but this was the only entry I could find here at Goodreads. I wish there was a more recent version, but with the tourism and museum situation ever changing in Egypt, pretty much anything will be out-of-date shortly.
As with all previous DK Eyewitness travel books, this is filled with gorgeous photos of all of the key sites. The text is minimal, but I really just wanted a general overview to Egypt, so this fit the bill.
I’m drooling over the pictures, so colourful! I often balk when travel books advise where to eat or stay, always feels so contrived and commercialized. I like the ‘did you know’ fun facts and local specialties that were featured. The suggested itineraries based on various areas of Egypt was useful.
One of the best travel books I’ve read! Whereas most guide books only give recommendations for where to stay and eat, this book was also packed to the brim with explanations about Egypt’s history, mythology, religions, and other tidbits to put everything into context. The hundreds of photos, illustrations, and maps were also super helpful in visualizing and understanding the areas.
Okay, honestly....a bit dull reading it if you're reading it straight through. BUT, that being said this isn't a "novel" it's a travel guide and it's filled with good tips! Gives a nice bit of Egyptian history which I enjoyed, along with the names, numbers, addresses of places to eat, stay, transportation, and entertainment. I learned some new things while reading this and added places I didn't know I wanted to visit to my MUST see list for when I return to Egypt. Really good travel guide and well organized 👍👍
Since I was already signed up for a tour and knew my destinations and amount of free time, I primarily used this book to locate cities and potential things to do if I had time, while also reading about what I might expect to see. It contains a lot of pictures, good suggestions, and a lot of historical information that supplemented the information I was provided with by the tour company. Very helpful.
Ideal if your travelling, not ideal if your wanting lots of information because you can't go. There is enough to whet your appetite though all the maps where good. A history book would have been better but this and the source of the nile was all they had in the library.
Travel back to ancient times and get acquainted with rich history and the time of now mixed together in a place as old as the Bible.
From beach side hotels to the Great Pyramid itself, Egypt has come a long way from the dull, desert of the day and became a tropical resort and tourist destination. It has hot weather all year round and boasts several film appearances, from Jumper to Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen.
The culture is rich and diverse, it can be easy to get swept up and lost, just like in the tunnels of the pyramids.
This just goes to show how big and complicated our planet really is. Egypt is a gem that still holds the gleam of everyone's eye as an ancient adventure in modern time.
Although this book is clearly not published for a budget traveler, the site-related information it contains is very useful. The country is divided up into sections and the highlights of each are covered in good detail, accompanied by plenty of colored pictures and maps.
The information is presented in an approachable, easy to read manner that makes it interesting to learn as you travel through the otherwise very similar ancient ruins.
Eyewitness won't be much help when trying to get from place to place but once you're there, it can really shed some light on the situation!
to somehow satiate my thirst for egypt, some friends of mine bought me this guide. i have to say it is the only non fiction book i have loved the whole way.! i still bring it out sometimes, as i chant the various gods of egypt, and try and learn some arabic from the language guide at the back, just incase someone decides to buy me ticket to my favorite country after my own. i especially loved the ancient egypt part of the book! facinating information!.
Tons of information...and tons of things that you wouldn't even think to think about regarding traveling. Learned tons about a foreign country. Beautiful pictures illustrate everything from food to hotels to the best trinkets to buy while visiting. Great tips on local ettiquette. Reason this is not a 5? The type is so small that my head hurts from squinting to read the text.
Pretty pictures, which is, in my opinion, the only thing really lacking in the Lonely Planet. So if you want pretty pictures and a great guide, you'll have to buy both.
Very helpful and colorful photos make places easier to identify. Wonderful trip from Alexandria upstream along the Nile to Abu Simbel. The sights are too numerous to count and all larger than life!
