I’ve been following Maris’ work on instagram for ages and absolutely love her style. We have a lot of the same loves: rainbows, 60s-90s design and fashion, David Bowie, 70s & 80s fantasy. I have never had any issues with my aesthetic (I am an Aries and am very sure about what I like and what I do not and it is all very eclectic lol) but this is such a cool book about the art of creativity and how things can fit together visually to tell a story. Highly recommend for any artistic minded friends.
I feel like this book came at the right time for me. I loved Jones's tone - both nonchalant and fiercely sparkly - and her questions for you to help you figure out what you want to say or feel. I also appreciated the variety of genres and mediums she talked about, from fashion and film to visual design and writing. I'm sure I'm going to be revisiting this book to reread the questions and look at the many awesome pictures of Jones' projects so far. I think this book is great for creatives and anyone who just wants to feel a bit more like their genuine selves, especially if you might feel like a little permission is needed. I'm a recovering perfectionist, and this book has helped me take another step towards creating freely.
The first half of this book is amazing. It's what spoke to me a lot and really helped to unlock my own personal art "aesthetic."
I really enjoyed the exercises and found them super helpful.
By chapter six, it felt a bit repetitive, which isn't really a bad thing, but at that point, I understood the exercises to really make something my own.
I'm giving it 4 stars for the great first half of the book.
While this book is intended more for visual artists, I found several of the exercises and tips useful for prose writing. Would recommend this book to anyone interested in the technical aspects of art and using them as a tool to improve their creative practice. The photographs and visual elements are beautiful to look at, while also highlighting the various points and lessons Jones is expressing.
This book is super informative and I think I'm going to read it again; I want to be able to read it all the way through at one time, so I know what the hecc I'm doing with the steps that it talks about in the book. I read it before I did the activities that are listed that help you find your aesthetic information and create your own. This is a GREAT reference if you want to find what styles you vibe with or even if you want to just create like a set of your own for photography sessions, too.
