Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.
Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.
Madness is the source of strength because it is the source of courage. Not bad actually. Atsushi seems to be driving at something along the lines of 'integrating your shadow'. The need not just to confront but actually integrate the darkness within. This is the kind of thing that art & storytelling is for.
This is really picking up, and things are getting wild! The characters are finally being pushed further and the plot is getting twisty. Much better than earlier installments.
And on today's episode of "Soul Eater's Secondary Characters are Criminally Underrated," we present Kirikou, Ox, and Harvar. And yes, I know all of these characters were formally introduced earlier, but I feel like this volume is where they all shone. First and foremost, Kirikou is my fave side character of the entire series. I love his design, his demeanor, and his fighting spirit. I also like how he interacts with his weapons, Fire Pot and Thunder Pot. Despite how young they look, he never talks down to them or treats them like children. Speaking of, Fire Pot and Thunder Pot are cute as fuck and I adore them as well.
Moving on to Ox and Harvar, I just love their dynamic and their friendship. One of the things I love the most about Soul Eater is its focus on relationships, mostly platonic and familial (in my opinion). After all, the relationship between a meister and a weapon is incredibly important and makes or breaks fights with enemies. What I like about Ox and Harvar's friendship is that its one based off of respect and admiration, but said respect and admiration is shown to not be cartoonishly over-the-top. Harvar clearly respects and admires Ox, but its subtle and despite this he isn't such a simp that he won't debate and/or question Ox's decisions. Its incredibly balanced and I love it, especially considering how characters like his tend to go overboard in showing their admiration. Now that I think about, despite how extreme some personalities are, this series is actually more subdued then other shounen action series. Weird.
On a different note, the art was so fucking good in this volume. There were so many scenes were I thought to myself, "yep, this is Atsushi Ohkubo is Atsushi Ohkubo and everyone else is everyone else". He's so good at creating eerily distorted images, manipulating shadows, and yet still creating hype, stylish fight scenes. Seriously, this art is S tier and you can fight me anytime.
I'm gonna stop here before I rant any longer, but suffice to say this volume was great.
I love Soul Eater. The manga is better than the anime and I love the anime. Maka and Soul are my all time favorite partners. I love that the relationship is platonic love and they would do anything for each other. The discussion of madness in this volume is probably my favorite. Genuinely so happy with where this is going and excited to start 8.
Yes dude this is what I’m talking about! The great momentum from the last book continues here with a pace that manages to keep you engaged and excited throughout, even when we’re not currently reading a battle scene. Soul and Maka’s dynamic here really shines! They’re so great together and I love seeing them interact! I’m also really interested in what they’re setting up with BlackStar and Tsubaki…I can’t wait to see how that goes! Anyways, this instalment may very well be my favourite one and the beat one yet! So excited to read part 8!!
Little bit of everything this vol. Team action, a internal investigation for the mole, and a sudden murder. Also, I wish I had the confidence of Black Star. Just boundless. Also Kid's axe kick? Perfect 👌🏻
