ഉമ്മൻചാണ്ടിക്ക് ആരെങ്കിലും ഡോക്ടറേറ്റ് നൽകിയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ അത് മനുഷ്യസ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ പേരിൽ ആയിരിക്കും എന്നുപറഞ്ഞാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. പുസ്തകത്തിന് ആമുഖം എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നത് മമ്മൂട്ടിയാണ്. വ്യക്തി ജീവിതത്തിനേക്കാൾ കൂടുതൽ രാഷ്ട്രീയമാണ് ഇതിൽ കാണാൻ കഴിയുക. ആ രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിൽ കേരളത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. സോളാറും മറ്റ് രാഷ്ട്രീയ പ്രതിസന്ധികളും വളരെ വിശദമായി അല്ലെങ്കിലും പറഞ്ഞുപോകുന്നിവിടെ

കാലം സാക്ഷി - ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടി


രണ്ടു തവണ കേരള മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ആയിരുന്ന ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടി തന്റെ പൊതു ജീവിതത്തെ വിചാരിക്കുന്ന പുസ്തകം. കെ എസ് യു കാലത്തെ പ്രവർത്തനം മുതൽ അവസാനം ആന്ധ്ര പ്രദേശിന്റെ ചുമതലയുള്ള എ ഐ സി സി അംഗമായതുവരെയുള്ള കാര്യങ്ങൾ ഇതിൽ വിവരിക്കുന്നു.


പല ആത്മകഥകളിലും ഉള്ളതുപോലുള്ള എക്സ്ക്ലൂസീവ് തുറന്നെഴുത്തുകൾ ഇല്ല. കൂടുതലും പൊതുസമക്ഷം അറിവുള്ള വസ്തുതകളുടെ , കണക്കുകളുടെ സമാഹരണമാണ്. എന്നാൽ തനിക്ക് നേരെ വന്ന ചില ആരോപണങ്ങളുടെ ശരിയായ വശം പറയുന്നതിൽ മടിയും കാണിക്കുന്നില്ല. അവസാന ഭാഗത്ത് കുടുംബവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് എഴുതിയ ചില കാര്യങ്ങൾ ഹൃദയസ്പർശിയായി തോന്നി. വ്യക്തിപരമായ പ്രശംസ, അത് അർഹിക്കുന്ന ഇടങ്ങളിൽ പോലും തീരെ ഇല്ല.


കേരളത്തിലെ കോൺഗ്രസിന്റെ ചരിത്രമായും ഇത് വായിക്കാം. എന്നാൽ പൊതു രാഷ്ട്രീയ സാഹചര്യത്തേയും കോൺഗ്രസ്സ് ഗ്രൂപ്പ് പ്രവർത്തനത്തെയും കുറിച്ചുള്ള അടിസ്ഥാന ധാരണ വായനക്കാർക്ക് ആവശ്യമാണ്. ആദ്യകാലത്ത് ആശയപരമായ ചർച്ചകളും, സംഘടനാപരമായ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളും മികച്ച രീതിയിൽ നടന്ന ഒരു പ്രസ്ഥാനം, പിന്നീട് കടുത്ത ഗ്രൂപ്പ് കളിയും അധികാര മോഹവും കാരണം ശിഥിലമായത് എങ്ങനെ എന്നത് ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിലൂടെ മനസ്സിലാക്കാം.


കോണ്ഗ്രസ് ഏറ്റെടുത്ത് നടത്തിയ വിമോചന സമരത്തെ കുറിച്ച് യാതൊരു പരാമർശവും ഇല്ല. അതുപോലെ പത്ര സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണം ഒഴിച്ച് അടിയന്തരാവസ്ഥയിൽ നടന്ന ഒന്നിനെയും ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടി വിമർശിക്കുന്നില്ല. ഭരണ കാലഘട്ടത്തെ പരാമർശിക്കുന്ന പലയിടത്തും ഒരു തനതു വിവരണം നൽകുന്നതിനു പകരം സ്ഥിതി വിവരക്കണക്കുകൾ കൊടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നത് അലോസരപ്പെടുത്തി. എന്നാൽ തന്നെയും ഒരു കാലഘട്ടത്തെ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന പുസ്തകം എന്ന നിലയ്ക്ക് വായിക്കേണ്ടത് തന്നെയാണ്.

Oommen Chandy's autobiography കാലം സാക്ഷി written by Sunnykutty Abraham based on his conversations with OC, is good at the sametime it's a bit disappointing. Good on the part, OC is explaining his political life in detail mentioning most of the key incidents of Kerala and little of Indian politics. But many chapters end up like OC's opinion about each of the government in Kerala. He tries his best not to say anything that might hurtful to others and goes even to the extend of not disclosing the full truth. Other than this the other disappointing part is, we don't get to know the inside of the person OC. I believe that part should have covered more rather than giving statistical details of many governments or incidents.

Even with all this drawbacks it's a must read for anyone interested in OC and his time in Kerala politics.

This is the autobiography of Oommen Chandy, twice Chief Minister and political stalwart of Kerala, focusing on the political side of his life beginning 1970 till 2023 during which period he represented Puthupally constituency uninterrupted, which is a record.He was a popular leader of the State. He loved to be in the middle of a crowd, always accessible to the general public while he was in office or out of it. Ever willing to help others, Compassion was in his blood. In the political battlefield he was sometimes vilified by his adversaries but he does not use harsh words towards them. The book is also a sort of political history of the State for half a century narrated from his point of view.

He could have been more forthright, but His personality didn't suit Him to be more critical of people around him. But knowing Him is a pleasure and loved reading it.
